Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of Lennard-Jones liquids

The homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of a Lennard-Jones liquid is investigated using the umbrella sampling method. The free energy cost of forming a nucleating droplet is determined as a function of the quench depth, and the saddle point nature of the droplets is verified using an intervention technique. The structure and symmetry of the nucleating droplets is found for a range of temperatures. We find that for deep quenches the nucleating droplets become more anisotropic and diffuse with no well defined core or surface. The environment of the nucleating droplets form randomly stacked hexagonal planes. This behavior is consistent with a spinodal nucleation interpretation. We also find that the free energy barrier for heterogeneous nucleation is a minimum when the lattice spacing of the impurity equals the lattice spacing of the equilibrium crystalline phase. If the lattice spacing of the impurity is different, the crystal grows into the bulk instead of wetting the impurity.

On the convergence from discrete to continuous time in an optimal stopping problem

We consider the problem of optimal stopping for a one-dimensional diffusion process. Two classes of admissible stopping times are considered. The first class consists of all nonanticipating stopping times that take values in [0,\infty], while the second class further restricts the set of allowed values to the discrete grid {nh:n=0,1,2,...,\infty} for some parameter h>0. The value functions for the two problems are denoted by V(x) and V^h(x), respectively. We identify the rate of convergence of V^h(x) to V(x) and the rate of convergence of the stopping regions, and provide simple formulas for the rate coefficients.

Dynamic importance sampling for uniformly recurrent markov chains

Importance sampling is a variance reduction technique for efficient estimation of rare-event probabilities by Monte Carlo. In standard importance sampling schemes, the system is simulated using an a priori fixed change of measure suggested by a large deviation lower bound analysis. Recent work, however, has suggested that such schemes do not work well in many situations. In this paper we consider dynamic importance sampling in the setting of uniformly recurrent Markov chains. By ``dynamic'' we mean that in the course of a single simulation, the change of measure can depend on the outcome of the simulation up till that time. Based on a control-theoretic approach to large deviations, the existence of asymptotically optimal dynamic schemes is demonstrated in great generality. The implementation of the dynamic schemes is carried out with the help of a limiting Bellman equation. Numerical examples are presented to contrast the dynamic and standard schemes.

NMR implementation of a quantum scheduling algorithm

The improved quantum scheduling algorithm proposed by Grover has been generalized using the generalized quantum search algorithm, in which a unitary operator replaces the Walsh-Hadamard transform, and $π/2$ phase rotations replace the selective inversions, in order to make the quantum scheduling algorithm suitable for more cases. Our scheme is realized on a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer. Experimental results show a good agreement between theory and experiment.

Effects of Parton Intrinsic Transverse Momentum on Photon Production in Hard-Scattering Processes

We calculate the photon production cross section arising from the hard scattering of partons in nucleon-nucleon collisions by taking into account the intrinsic parton transverse momentum distribution and the next-to-leading-order contributions. As first pointed out by Owens, the inclusion of the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of partons leads to an enhancement of photon production cross section in the region of photon transverse momenta of a few GeV/c for nucleon-nucleon collisions at a center-of-mass energy of a few tens of GeV. The enhancement increases as $\sqrt{s}$ decreases. Such an enhancement is an important consideration in the region of photon momenta under investigation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.
