Anisotropic paramagnetism of monoclinic Nd2Ti2O7 single crystals

The anisotropic paramagnetism and specific heat in Nd2Ti2O7 single crystals are investigated. Angular dependence of the magnetization and Weiss temperatures show the dominant role of the crystal field effect in the magnetization. By incorporating the results from the diluted samples, contributions to Weiss temperature from exchange interactions and crystal field interactions are isolated. The exchange interactions are found to be ferromagnetic, while the crystal field contributes a large negative part to the Weiss temperature, along all three crystallographic directions. The specific heat under magnetic field reveals a two-level Schottky ground state scheme, due to the Zeeman splitting of the ground state doublet, and the g-factors are thus determined. These observations provide solid foundations for further investigations of Nd2Ti2O7.

Giant Positive Magnetoresistance in Co@CoO Nanoparticle Arrays

We report the magnetotransport properties of self-assembled Co@CoO nanoparticle arrays at temperatures below 100 K. Resistance shows thermally activated behavior that can be fitted by the general expression of R exp{(T/T0)^v}. Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping (v=1/2) and simple activation (hard gap, v=1) dominate the high and low temperature region, respectively, with a strongly temperature-dependent transition regime in between. A giant positive magnetoresistance of >1,400% is observed at 10K, which decreases with increasing temperature. The positive MR and most of its features can be explained by the Zeeman splitting of the localized states that suppresses the spin dependent hopping paths in the presence of on-site Coulomb repulsion.

Emergent order in the spin-frustrated system DyxTb2-xTi2O7 studied by ac susceptibility measurements

We report the a.c. susceptibility study of Dy_xTb_{2-x}Ti_2O_7 with x in [0, 2]. In addition to the single-ion effect at Ts (single-ion effect peak temperature) corresponding to the Dy3+ spins as that in spin ice Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and a possible spin freezing peak at Tf (Tf < 3 K), a new peak associated with Tb^{3+} is observed in $χ_{ac}(T)$ at nonzero magnetic field with a characteristic temperature T^* (Tf < T^* < Ts). T^* increases linearly with x in a wide composition range (0 < x < 1.5 at 5 kOe). Both application of a magnetic field and increasing doping with Dy3+ enhance T^*. The T^* peak is found to be thermally driven with an unusually large energy barrier as indicated from its frequency dependence. These effects are closely related to the crystal field levels, and the underlying mechanism remains to be understood.

Superconductivity and local-moment magnetism in Eu(Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report the measurements of resistivity and magnetization under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the basal plane, respectively, on a cobalt-doped Eu(Fe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal. We observed a resistivity drop at $T_c\sim$ 21 K, which shifts toward lower temperatures under external fields, suggesting a superconducting transition. The upper critical fields near $T_c$ show large anisotropy, in contrast with those of other '122' FeAs-based superconductors. Low-field magnetic susceptibility data also show evidence of superconductivity below 21 K. Instead of expected zero-resistance below $T_c$, however, a resistivity reentrance appears at 17 K under zero field, coincident with the magnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments. Based on the temperature and field dependences of anisotropic magnetization, a helical magnetic structure for the Eu$^{2+}$ spins is proposed. External magnetic fields easily changes the helimagnetism into a ferromagnetism with fully polarized Eu$^{2+}$ spins, accompanying by disappearance of the resistivity reentrance. Therefore, superconductivity coexists with ferromagnetic state of Eu$^{2+}$ spins under relatively low magnetic field. The magnetic and superconducting phase diagrams are finally summarized for both $H\parallel ab$ and $H\parallel c$.

Superconductivity up to 30 K in the vicinity of quantum critical point in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

We report bulk superconductivity induced by an isovalent doping of phosphorus in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. The P-for-As substitution results in shrinkage of lattice, especially for the FeAs block layers. The resistivity anomaly associated with the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the undoped compound is gradually suppressed by the P doping. Superconductivity with the maximum $T_c$ of 30 K emerges at $x$=0.32, coinciding with a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) which is evidenced by the disappearance of SDW order and the linear temperature-dependent resistivity in the normal state. The $T_c$ values were found to decrease with further P doping, and no superconductivity was observed down to 2 K for $x\geq$ 0.77. The appearance of superconductivity in the vicinity of QCP hints to the superconductivity mechanism in iron-based arsenides.
