Strong pairing and symmetric pseudogap metal in double Kondo lattice model: from nickelate superconductor to tetralayer optical lattice

In this work, we propose and study a double Kondo lattice model which hosts robust superconductivity. The system consists of two identical Kondo lattice model, each with Kondo coupling $J_K$ within each layer, while the localized spin moments are coupled together via an inter-layer on-site antiferromagnetic spin coupling $J_\perp$. We consider the strong $J_\perp$ limit, wherein the local moments tend to form rung singlets and are thus gapped. However, the Kondo coupling $J_K$ transmits the inter-layer entanglement between the local moments to the itinerant electrons. Consequently, the itinerant electrons experience a strong inter-layer antiferromangetic spin coupling and form strong inter-layer pairing, which is confirmed through numerical simulation in one dimensional system. Experimentally, the $J_K \rightarrow -\infty$ limits of the model describes the recently found bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, while the $J_K>0$ side can be realized in tetralayer optical lattice of cold atoms. Two extreme limits, $J_K \rightarrow -\infty$ and $J_K \rightarrow +\infty$ limit are shown to be simplified to a bilayer type II t-J model and a bilayer one-orbital t-J model, respectively. Thus, our double Kondo lattice model offers a unified framework for nickelate superconductor and tetralayer optical lattice quantum simulator upon changing the sign of $J_K$. We highlight both the qualitative similarity and the quantitative difference in the two sides of $J_K$. Finally, we discuss the possibility of a symmetric Kondo breakdown transition in the model with a symmetric pseudogap metal corresponding to the usual heavy Fermi liquid.

Thermodynamic topology of Kerr-Sen black holes via Rényi statistics

In the present study, we investigate the topological properties of black holes in terms of Rényi statistics as an extension of the Gibbs-Boltzmann (GB) statistics, aiming to characterize the non-Boltzmannian thermodynamic topology of Kerr-Sen and dyonic Kerr-Sen black holes. Through this research, we discover that the topological number derived via Rényi statistics differs from that obtained through GB statistics. Interestingly, although the non-extended parameter $λ$ changes the topological number, the topological classification of the Kerr-Sen and dyonic Kerr-Sen black holes remains consistent under both GB and Rényi statistics. In addition, the topological numbers associated with these two types of black holes without cosmological constant using Rényi entropy processes are the same as the AdS cases of them by considering the GB entropy, as further evidenced by such a study found here. This indicates the cosmological constant has some potential connections the with the nonextensive Rényi parameter from the perspective of thermodynamic topology.

Alleviating Over-Smoothing via Aggregation over Compact Manifolds

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved significant success in various applications. Most GNNs learn the node features with information aggregation of its neighbors and feature transformation in each layer. However, the node features become indistinguishable after many layers, leading to performance deterioration: a significant limitation known as over-smoothing. Past work adopted various techniques for addressing this issue, such as normalization and skip-connection of layer-wise output. After the study, we found that the information aggregations in existing work are all contracted aggregations, with the intrinsic property that features will inevitably converge to the same single point after many layers. To this end, we propose the aggregation over compacted manifolds method (ACM) that replaces the existing information aggregation with aggregation over compact manifolds, a special type of manifold, which avoids contracted aggregations. In this work, we theoretically analyze contracted aggregation and its properties. We also provide an extensive empirical evaluation that shows ACM can effectively alleviate over-smoothing and outperforms the state-of-the-art. The code can be found in https://github.com/DongzhuoranZhou/ACM.git.

Deconfined Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid transition and superconducting instability

Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCP) have attracted lots of attentions in the past decades, but were mainly restricted to incompressible phases. On the other hand, various experimental puzzles call for new theory of unconventional quantum criticality between metals at a generic density. Here we explore the possibility of a deconfined transition between two symmetric Fermi liquids in a bilayer model tuned by inter-layer antiferromagnetic spin-spin coupling $J_\perp$. Across the transition the Fermi surface volume per flavor jumps by $1/2$ of the Brillouin zone (BZ), similar to the small to large Fermi surface transitions in heavy Fermion systems and maybe also in the high Tc cuprates. But in the bilayer case the small Fermi surface phase (dubbed as sFL) has neither symmetry breaking nor fractionalization, akin to the symmetric mass generation (SMG) discussed in high energy physics. We formulate a deconfined critical theory where the two Fermi liquids correspond to higgs and/or confined phases of a $U(1)\times U(1)$ gauge theory. We show that this deconfined FL to FL transition (DFFT) fixed point is unstable to pairing and thus a superconductor dome is expected at low temperature. At finite temperature above the pairing scale, microscopic electron is a three particle bound state of the deconfined fractional fermions in the critical theory. We also introduce another parameter which can suppress the pairing instability, leading to a deconfined tri-critical point stable to zero temperature. We also provide numerical results of the bilayer model in one dimension, with a Luther-Emery liquid between two different Luttinger liquids, similar to the phase diagram from the field theory in two dimension. Our work opens a new direction to exploring deconfined metallic criticality and new pairing mechanism from critical gauge field.

Chandra X-ray Observations of PSR J1849-0001, its Pulsar Wind Nebula, and the TeV Source HESS J1849-000

We obtained a 108 ks Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) observation of PSR J1849-0001 and its pulsar wind nebula (PWN), coincident with the TeV source HESS J1849-000. By analyzing the new and archival CXO data, we resolved the pulsar from the PWN, explored the PWN morphology on arcsecond and arcminute scales, and measured the spectra of different regions of the PWN. Both the pulsar and the compact inner PWN spectra are hard with power-law photon indices of $1.20 \pm 0.07$ and $1.49 \pm 0.20$, respectively. The jet-dominiated PWN has a relatively low luminosity, lack of gamma-ray pulsations, relatively hard and nonthermal spectrum of the pulsar, and sine-like pulse profile, which indicates a relatively small angle between the pulsar's spin and magnetic dipole axis. In this respect, it shares similar properties with a few other so-called MeV pulsars. Although the joint X-ray and TeV spectral energy distribution can be roughly described by a single-zone model, the obtained magnetic field value is unrealistically low. A more realistic scenario is the presence of a relic PWN, no longer emitting synchrotron X-rays but still radiating in TeV via inverse-Compton upscattering. We calso serendipitously detected surprisingly bright X-ray emission from a very wide binary whose components should not be interacting.

Multiplier Submodule Sheaves and a problem of Lempert

In this article, we establish an $L^2$ extension theorem for Nakano semi-positive singular Hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles, and the strong openness and stability properties of the multiplier submodule sheaves associated to Nakano semi-positive singular Hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles. We solve affirmatively a question of Lempert on the preservation of Nakano semi-positivity under limit of an increasing metrics based on Deng-Ning-Wang-Zhou's characterization of Nakano positivity.

A Le Potier-type isomorphism twisted with multiplier submodule sheaves

In this paper, we obtain a Le Potier-type isomorphism theorem twisted with multiplier submodule sheaves, which relates a holomorphic vector bundle endowed with a strongly Nakano semipositive singular Hermitian metric to the tautological line bundle with the induced metric. As applications, we obtain a Kollár-type injectivity theorem, a Nadel-type vanishing theorem, and a singular holomorphic Morse inequality for holomorphic vector bundles and so on.

Systematic study of capture thresholds with time dependent Hartree-Fock theory

With the time dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory, capture thresholds $E_{\rm cap}$ for 144 fusion systems with nearly spherical nuclei are systematically studied for the first time. We find that for the reactions between doubly-magic nuclei, the calculated $E_{\rm cap}$ are very close to the extracted barrier heights from measured fusion excitation functions. For the fusion reactions with nearly spherical nuclei, an excitation energy of about 1 MeV at the capture position need to be considered to better reproduce the data due to the lower excitation threshold. The rms deviation with respect to the barrier heights is only 1.43 MeV from the TDHF calcualtions, which is smaller than the results from three empirical nuclear potentials. Together with Siwek-Wilczyński formula in which the three parameters are determined by the TDHF calculations, the measured fusion cross sections at energies around the barriers can be well reproduced for seven fusion reactions $^{40}$Ca+$^{48}$Ca, $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb, $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr, $^{28}$Si+$^{96}$Zr and $^{132}$Sn+$^{40,48}$Ca.

Fabrication of Al/AlOx/Al junctions with high uniformity and stability on sapphire substrates

Tantalum and aluminum on sapphire are widely used platforms for qubits of long coherent time. As quantum chips scale up, the number of Josephson junctions on Sapphire increases. Thus, both the uniformity and stability of the junctions are crucial to quantum devices, such as scalable superconducting quantum computer circuit, and quantum-limited amplifiers. By optimizing the fabrication process, especially, the conductive layer during the electron beam lithography process, Al/AlOx/Al junctions of sizes ranging from 0.0169 to 0.04 μm2 on sapphire substrates were prepared. The relative standard deviation of room temperature resistances (RN) of these junctions is better than 1.7% on 15 mmx15 mm chips, and better than 2.66% on 2 inch wafers, which is the highest uniformity on sapphire substrates has been reported. The junctions are robust and stable in resistances as temperature changes. The resistances increase by the ratio of 9.73% relative to RN as the temperature ramp down to 4K, and restore their initial values in the reverse process as the temperature ramps back to RT. After being stored in a nitrogen cabinet for 100 days, the resistance of the junctions changed by1.16% in average. The demonstration of uniform and stable Josephson junctions in large area paves the way for the fabrication of superconducting chip of hundreds of qubits on sapphire substrates.

Critical behavior and Joule-Thomson expansion of charged AdS black holes surrounded by exotic fluid with modified Chaplygin equation of state

By considering the concept of a unified single fluid model, referred to as the modified Chaplygin gas (MCG), which amalgamates dark energy and dark matter. In this study, we explore the thermodynamic characteristics of charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes existing in an unconventional fluid accompanied by MCG. To accomplish this objective, we derive the equations of state by regarding the charge $Q^{2}$ as a thermodynamic variable. The impact of MCG parameters on the critical thermodynamic quantities ($ψ_{c}$, $T_{c}$, $Q_{c}^{2}$) are examined, followed by a detailed analysis of the $Q^{2}-ψ$ diagram. To provide a clearer explanation of the phase transition, we present an analysis of the Gibbs free energy. It is important to note that if the Hawking temperature exceeds the critical temperature, there is a distinct pattern observed known as swallowtail behavior. This indicates that the system undergoes a first-order phase transition from a smaller black hole to a larger one. The critical exponent of the system is found to be in complete agreement with that of the van der Waals fluid system. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of MCG parameters and black hole charge on the Joule-Thomson (J-T) expansion in the extended phase space. The J-T coefficient is examined to pinpoint the exact region experiencing cooling or heating, the observation reveals that the presence of negative heat capacity results in the occurrence of a cooling process. In addition, it is worth noting that the certain parameters exert a significant influence on the ratio $\frac{T_{min}}{T_{c}}$. The parameters $γ$ and $β$ have a non-negligible effect on the isenthalpy curve.

Liouville-type theorems, radial symmetry and integral representation of solutions to Hardy-Hénon equations involving higher order fractional Laplacians

We study nonnegative solutions to the following Hardy-Hénon type equations involving higher order fractional Laplacians $$ (-Δ)^σu = |x|^{-α}u^{p} ~~~~~~ \mbox{in} ~ \mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\} $$ with a possible singularity at the origin, where $σ$ is a real number satisfying $0 < σ< n/2$, $-\infty < α< 2σ$ and $p>1$. By a more direct approach without using the super poly-harmonic properties, we establish an integral representation for nonnegative solutions to the above higher order fractional equations whether the singularity $\{0\}$ is removable or not. As the first application, we prove an optimal Liouville-type theorem for the above equations with removable singularity for all $σ\in (0, n/2)$ when $$ 1 < p < p_{σ,α}^*:=\frac{n+2σ-2α}{n-2σ} ~~~ \mbox{and} ~~~ -\infty < α< 2σ. $$ This, in particular, covers a gap occurring for non-integral $σ\in (1, n/2)$ and $α\in (0, 2σ)$ in the current literature. As the second application, we show the radial symmetry of solutions in the critical case or in the case when the origin is a non-removable singularity. Such radial symmetry would be useful in studying the singular Yamabe-type problems.

Asymptotic expansions for conformal scalar curvature equations near isolated singularities

In this paper, we study asymptotic expansions of positive solutions of the conformal scalar curvature equation $$ - Δu = K(x) u^\frac{n + 2}{n - 2} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ B_1 \setminus \{ 0 \} $$ with an isolated singularity at the origin. Under certain flatness conditions on $K$, we establish a higher-order expansion of solutions near the origin. In particular, we give the refined second-order asymptotic expansion of solutions when $n \geq 6$. Moreover, we also obtain an arbitrary-order expansion of singular positive solutions of the anisotropic elliptic equation $$ - \,{\rm div} (|x|^{- 2 a} \nabla u) = |x|^{- b p} u^{p - 1} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ B_1 \setminus \{ 0 \}, $$ where $0 \leq a < \frac{n - 2}{2}$, $a \leq b < a + 1$ and $p = \frac{2 n}{n - 2 + 2 (b - a)}$. This equation is arising from the celebrated Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality.

Strong pairing from small Fermi surface beyond weak coupling: Application to La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

The studies of high-temperature superconductors raise a fundamental question: Can a small Fermi surface phase, which violates the Luttinger theorem, exist and give rise to superconductivity? Our work provides a positive answer through a controlled theory based on a bilayer model with strong inter-layer spin-spin coupling ($J_\perp$) but no inter-layer hopping ($t_\perp$). Then small hole doping of the rung-singlet insulator with two electrons per rung naturally leads to small hole pockets with Fermi surface volume per flavor smaller than the free fermion result by $1/2$ of the Brillouin zone(BZ). We construct a new t-J model on a bilayer square lattice, so called ESD t-J model and employ a generalized slave boson theory, which captures this small Fermi surface phase at small hole doping $x$. This metallic state is an intrinsically strongly correlated Fermi liquid beyond weak coupling theory, violating the perturbative Luttinger theorem but consistent with the Oshikawa's non-perturbative proof. We further show that it transitions into an inter-layer paired $s'$-wave superconductor at lower temperature through Feshbach resonance with a virtual Cooper pair, with a surprising doping-induced crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at higher hole doping levels. This leads to a superconducting dome centered around $x=0.5$, with the normal state changing from the conventional Fermi liquid in the $x>0.5$ to the unusual small Fermi surface state in the $x<0.5$ side. Our theoretical findings including phase diagrams are also confirmed by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation in quasi one dimension. Applying our theoretical framework, we provide a plausible scenario for the recently found nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ materials.

On-chip light-scattering enhancement enables high performance single-particle tracking under conventional bright-field microscope

Scattering-based single-particle tracking (S-SPT) has opened new avenues for highly sensitive label-free detection and characterization of nanoscopic objects, making it particularly attractive for various analytical applications. However, a long-standing issue hindering its widespread applicability is its high technical demands on optical systems. The most promising solution entails implementing on-chip light-scattering enhancement, but the existing field-enhancement technology fails as their highly localized field is insufficient to cover the three-dimensional trajectory of particles within the interrogation time. Here, we present a straightforward and robust on-chip microlens-based strategy for light-scattering enhancement, providing an enhancement range ten times greater than that of near-field optical techniques. These properties are attributed to the increased long-range optical fields and complex composite interactions between two closely spaced structures. Thanks to this strategy, we demonstrate that high-performance S-SPT can be achieved, for the first time, under a conventional bright-field microscope with illumination powers over 1,000 times lower than typically required. This significantly reduces the technical demands of S-SPT, representing a significant step forward in facilitating its practical application in biophotonics, biosensors, diagnostics, and other fields.

MetaF2N: Blind Image Super-Resolution by Learning Efficient Model Adaptation from Faces

Due to their highly structured characteristics, faces are easier to recover than natural scenes for blind image super-resolution. Therefore, we can extract the degradation representation of an image from the low-quality and recovered face pairs. Using the degradation representation, realistic low-quality images can then be synthesized to fine-tune the super-resolution model for the real-world low-quality image. However, such a procedure is time-consuming and laborious, and the gaps between recovered faces and the ground-truths further increase the optimization uncertainty. To facilitate efficient model adaptation towards image-specific degradations, we propose a method dubbed MetaF2N, which leverages the contained Faces to fine-tune model parameters for adapting to the whole Natural image in a Meta-learning framework. The degradation extraction and low-quality image synthesis steps are thus circumvented in our MetaF2N, and it requires only one fine-tuning step to get decent performance. Considering the gaps between the recovered faces and ground-truths, we further deploy a MaskNet for adaptively predicting loss weights at different positions to reduce the impact of low-confidence areas. To evaluate our proposed MetaF2N, we have collected a real-world low-quality dataset with one or multiple faces in each image, and our MetaF2N achieves superior performance on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Source code, pre-trained models, and collected datasets are available at https://github.com/yinzhicun/MetaF2N.

Topology of nonlinearly charged black hole chemistry via massive gravity

The classification of critical points of charged topological black holes (TBHs) in anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS) under the Power Maxwell Invariant (PMI)-massive gravity is accomplished within the framework of black hole chemistry (BHC). Considering the grand canonical ensemble (GCE), we show that $d=4$ black hole have only one topological class, whereas $d\ge 5$ black holes belong to two different topology classes. Furthermore, the conventional critical point characterized by negative topological charge coincides with the maximum extreme point of temperature; and the novel critical point featuring opposite topological charge corresponds to the minimum extreme point of temperature. With increasing pressure, new phases emerge at the novel critical point while disappear from the conventional one. Moreover, a atypical van der Waals (vdW) behavior is found in $d\ge 6$ dimensions, and the anomaly disappears at the traditional critical point. In the limit of nonlinearity parameter $s\to1$, different topology classes are only obtained in the GCE and they may not exist within the canonical ensemble. With the absence of electric potential $Φ$, the neutral TBHs share the same topological classification results as the charged TBHs in the GCE of Maxwell-massive gravity.
