Conductivity in nodal line semimetals with short-ranged impurity potentials

We study the transport properties in nodal line semimetals with short-ranged impurity potentials at zero temperature. By computing the Drude conductivity and the corrections from the interference of particle and hole trajectories, we find that the electrons are localized in directions both parallel and perpendicular to the plane of nodal ring. We further calculate the conductivity in a weak magnetic field, and find that the perpendicular magnetic field totally destroys the weak localization gives a positive quantum interference correction, which is similar to the result in Weyl semimetals. But for a parallel magnetic field, because of the $π$ Berry phase of the electron orbit around the nodal line, the magnetoconductivity is negatively proportional to $B$. The difference between the perpendicular and the parallel magnetic field may be verified by experiments. Nodal line semimetals which break inversion and time-reversal symmetry and have spin-orbit coupling are also considered and produce qualitatively the same results.

Effect of Rotational Speed on the Stability of Two Rotating Side-by-side Circular Cylinders at Low Reynolds Number

Flow around two rotating side-by-side circular cylinders of equal diameter D is numerically studied at the Reynolds number Re=40-200 and various rotation rate theta_i. The incoming flow is assumed to be two-dimensional laminar flow. The governing equations are the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and solved by the finite volume method (FVM). The ratio of the center-to-center spacing to the cylinder diameter is T/D=2. The objective of the present work is to investigate the effect of rotational speed and Reynolds number on the stability of the flow. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data and a good agreement is achieved. The stability of the flow is analyzed by using the energy gradient theory, which produces the energy gradient function K to identify the region where the flow is the most prone to be destabilized and the degree of the destabilization. Numerical results reveal that K is the most significant at the separated shear layers of the cylinder pair. With Re increases, the length of the wake is shorter and the vortex shedding generally exhibits a symmetrical distribution for theta_i <theta_crit. It is also shown that the unsteady vortex shedding can be suppressed by rotating the cylinders in the counter-rotating mode.

Superconductivity in an organometallic compound

Organometallic compounds constitute a very large group of substances that contain at least one metal-to-carbon bond in which the carbon is part of an organic group. They have played a major role in the development of the science of chemistry. These compounds are used to a large extent as catalysts (substances that increase the rate of reactions without themselves being consumed) and as intermediates in the laboratory and in industry. Recently, novel quantum phenormena such as topological insulators and superconductors were also suggested in these materials. However, there has been no report on the experimental exploration for the topological state. Evidence for superconductivity from the zero-resistivity state in any organometallic compound has not been achieved yet, though much efforts have been devoted. Here we report the experimental realization of superconductivity with the critical temperature of 3.6 K in a potassium-doped organometallic compound, $ i.e.$ tri-$o$-tolylbismuthine with the evidence of both the Meissner effect and the zero-resistivity state through the $dc$ and $ac$ magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements. The obtained superconducting parameters classify this compound as a type-II superconductor. The benzene ring is identified to be the essential superconducting unit in such a phenyl organometallic compound. The superconducting phase and its composition are determined by the combined studies of the X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations as well as the Raman spectroscopy measurements. These findings enrich the applications of organometallic compounds in superconductivity and add a new electron-acceptor family for organic superconductors. This work also points to a large pool for finding superconductors from organometallic compounds.

Qualitative analysis for an elliptic system in the punctured space

In this paper, we investigate the qualitative properties of positive solutions for the following two-coupled elliptic system in the punctured space: $$ \begin{cases} -Δu =μ_1 u^{2q+1} + βu^q v^{q+1} \\ -Δv =μ_2 v^{2q+1} + βv^q u^{q+1} \end{cases} \textmd{in} ~\mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\}, $$ where $μ_1, μ_2$ and $β$ are all positive constants, $n\geq 3$. We establish a monotonicity formula that completely characterizes the singularity of positive solutions. We prove a sharp global estimate for both components of positive solutions. We also prove the nonexistence of positive semi-singular solutions, which means that one component is bounded near the singularity and the other component is unbounded near the singularity.

Three-Leaf Dart-Shaped Single-Crystal BN Formation Promoted by Surface Oxygen

Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) single crystals with various shapes have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition over the past several years. Here we report the formation of three-leaf dart (3LD)-shaped single crystals of h-BN on Cu foil by atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The leaves of the 3LD-shaped h-BN are as long as 18 μm and their edges are smooth armchair on one side and stepped armchair on the other. Careful analysis revealed that surface oxygen plays an important role in the formation of the 3LD shape. Oxygen suppressed h-BN nucleation by passivating Cu surface active sites and lowered the edge attachment energy, which caused the growth kinetics to change to a diffusion-controlled mode.

A question of Norton-Sullivan in the analytic case

In 1996, A. Norton and D. Sullivan asked the following question: If $f:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2$ is a diffeomorphism, $h:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2$ is a continuous map homotopic to the identity, and $h f=T_ρ h$ where $ρ\in\mathbb{R}^2$ is a totally irrational vector and $T_ρ:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2,\, z\mapsto z+ρ$ is a translation, are there natural geometric conditions (e.g. smoothness) on $f$ that force $h$ to be a homeomorphism? In [ J. Wang and Z. Zhang, GAFA 2018 ], the first author and Z. Zhang gave a negative answer to the above question in the $C^{\infty}$ category: In general, not even the infinite smoothness condition can force $h$ to be a homeomorphism. In this article, we give a negative answer in the $C^ω$ category: We construct a real-analytic conservative and minimal totally irrational pseudo-rotation of $\mathbb{T}^2$ that is semi-conjugate to a translation but not conjugate to a translation, which simultaneously answers a question raised in [ J. Wang and Z. Zhang, GAFA 2018 ].

On the multiwavelength properties of several γ-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies

The γ-ray detection from several radio-loud (RL) narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies has enabled us to study powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with smaller black hole masses and higher accretion rates than classical blazars. However, the sample of those γ-ray detected NLS1s available is still not large enough for a comprehensive and statistical study. We provide a summary of our detections and follow-up studies of three γ-ray-emitting NLS1s: SDSS J211852.96-073227.5 with flaring γ-ray radiation (Yang et al. 2018, Paliya et al. 2018) and SDSS J122222.55+041315.7 with the highest redshift by far (z~1) (Yao et al. 2015a), along with the prototype 1H 0323+342 (Zhou et al. 2007, Yao et al. 2015b). And we will discuss their multiwavelength properties and variability properties, including implications from high-energy observations in γ-rays and X-rays, infrared and radio properties, and correlated variability between several wavebands.

Traceable instruments for encircled angular flux measurements

We report on the development of an instrument for the measurement of the Encircled Angular Flux (EAF) and on establishing its metrological traceability at the required level of uncertainty. We designed and built for that purpose two independent EAF measuring instruments, both based on the analysis of the two-dimensional far field intensity profile observed at the output of an optical fibre, using either CMOS or CCD cameras. An in depth evaluation of the factors influencing the accuracy of the measurements was performed and allowed determining an uncertainty budget for EAF measurements, which was validated by a first series of inter-comparisons. Theses comparisons were performed between the two independent EAF measuring systems, using a 850 nm LED coupled into a gradient index fibre as a test object. We demonstrated a very good equivalence between the two systems, well within the absolute measurement uncertainties that were estimated at the 10-3 level. Further inter-comparisons using light sources coupled to step-index, large core and small core multimode fibres are still ongoing, with the aim to confirm the performances of the instrument under various illuminating conditions.

SDSS J211852.96-073227.5: a new γ-ray flaring narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy

We report on the identification of a new γ-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy, SDSS J211852.96-073227.5 (hereinafter J2118-0732). The galaxy, at a redshift of 0.26, is associated with a radio source of flat/inverted spectrum at high radio frequencies. The analysis of its optical spectrum obtained in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) revealed a small linewidth of the broad component of the Hβ line (full width at half-maximum = 1585 km s^{-1}), making it a radio-loud NLS1 galaxy -- an intriguing class of active galactic nuclei with exceptional multiwavelength properties. A new γ-ray source centred at J2118-0732 was sporadically detected during 2009--2013 in form of flares by the Fermi-LAT. Our XMM-Newton observations revealed a flat X-ray spectrum described by a simple power law, and a flux variation by a factor of ~2.5 in five months. The source also shows intraday variability in the infrared band. Its broad-band spectral energy distribution can be modelled by emission from a simple one-zone leptonic jet model, and the flux drop from infrared to X-rays in five months can be explained by changes of the jet parameters, though the exact values may be subject to relatively large uncertainties. With the NLS1-blazar composite nucleus, the clear detection of the host galaxy, and the synchronous variations in the multiwavelength fluxes, J2118-0732 provides a new perspective on the formation and evolution of relativistic jets under the regime of relatively small black hole masses and high accretion rates.

On Isolated Singularities of Fractional Semi-Linear Elliptic Equations

In this paper, we study the local behavior of nonnegative solutions of fractional semi-linear equations $(-Δ)^σu = u^p$ with an isolated singularity, where $\sg \in (0, 1)$ and $\frac{n}{n-2\sg} < p < \frac{n+2\sg}{n-2\sg}$. We first use blow up method and a Liouville type theorem to derive an upper bound. Then we establish a monotonicity formula and a sufficient condition for removable singularity to give a classification of the isolated singularities. When $\sg=1$, this classification result has been proved by Gidas and Spruck (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 34: 525-598, 1981).

Determination of the 4-genus of a complete graph (with an appendix)

In this paper, the quadrangular genus (4-genus) of the complete graph $K_p$ is shown to be $γ_4 (K_p) = \lceil {p(p-5)}/{8} \rceil +1$ for orientable surfaces. This means that $K_p$ is minimally embeddable in the closed orientable surface of genus $γ_4 (K_p)$ under the constraint that each face has length at least 4. In the most general setting, the genus of the complete graph was established by Ringel and Youngs and was mainly concerned with triangulations of surfaces. Nonetheless, since then a great deal of interest has also been generated in quadrangulations of surfaces. Hartsfield and Ringel were the first who considered minimal quadrangulations of surfaces. Sections 1--4 of this paper are essentially a reproduction of the original 1998 version as follows: Chen B., Lawrencenko S., Yang H. Determination of the 4-genus of a complete graph, submitted to Discrete Mathematics and withdrawn by S. Lawrencenko, June 1998, URL: https://t.co/cUg6R9Jwyw . More discussion on this 1998 version is held and some copyright issues around the quadrangular genus of complete graphs are clarified in the Appendix to the current version of the paper; the Appendix was written in 2017.

Highly reproducible superconductivity in potassium-doped triphenylbismuth

Using a new two-step synthesis method - ultrasound treatment and low temperature annealing, we explore superconductivity in potassium-doped triphenylbismuth, which is composed of one bismuth atom and three phenyl rings. The combination of dc and ac magnetic measurements reveals that one hundred percent of synthesized samples exhibit superconductivity at 3.5 K and/or 7.2 K at ambient pressure. The magnetization hysteresis loops provide a strong evidence of type-II superconductor, with the upper critical magnetic field up to 1.0 Tesla. Both calculated electronic structure and measured Raman spectra indicate that superconductivity is realized by transferring electron from potassium to carbon atom. Our study opens an encouraging window for the search of organic superconductors in organometallic molecules.

Quantum Oscillations in Nodal Line Systems

We study signatures of magnetic quantum oscillations in three-dimensional nodal line semimetals at zero temperature. The extended nature of the degenerate bands can result in a Fermi surface geometry with topological genus one, as well as a Fermi surface of electron and hole pockets encapsulating the nodal line. Moreover, the underlying two-band model to describe a nodal line is not unique, in that there are two classes of Hamiltonian with distinct band topology giving rise to the same Fermi surface geometry. After identifying the extremal cyclotron orbits in various magnetic field directions, we study their concomitant Landau levels and resulting quantum oscillation signatures. By Landau-fan-diagram analyses we extract the non-trivial $π$ Berry phase signature for extremal orbits linking the nodal line.

Image Dehazing using Bilinear Composition Loss Function

In this paper, we introduce a bilinear composition loss function to address the problem of image dehazing. Previous methods in image dehazing use a two-stage approach which first estimate the transmission map followed by clear image estimation. The drawback of a two-stage method is that it tends to boost local image artifacts such as noise, aliasing and blocking. This is especially the case for heavy haze images captured with a low quality device. Our method is based on convolutional neural networks. Unique in our method is the bilinear composition loss function which directly model the correlations between transmission map, clear image, and atmospheric light. This allows errors to be back-propagated to each sub-network concurrently, while maintaining the composition constraint to avoid overfitting of each sub-network. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method using both synthetic and real world examples. Extensive experiments show that our method outperfoms state-of-the-art methods especially for haze images with severe noise level and compressions.

Vortex states and spin textures of rotating spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap

We consider the ground-state properties of Rashba spin-orbit-coupled pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a rotating two-dimensional (2D) toroidal trap. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the increasing rotation frequency enhances the creation of giant vortices for the initially miscible BECs, while it can lead to the formation of semiring density patterns with irregular hidden vortex structures for the initially immiscible BECs. Without rotation, strong 2D isotropic SOC yields a heliciform-stripe phase for the initially immiscible BECs. Combined effects of rotation, SOC, and interatomic interactions on the vortex structures and typical spin textures of the ground state of the system are discussed systematically. In particular, for fixed rotation frequency above the critical value, the increasing isotropic SOC favors a visible vortex ring in each component which is accompanied by a hidden giant vortex plus a (several) hidden vortex ring(s) in the central region. In the case of 1D anisotropic SOC, large SOC strength results in the generation of hidden linear vortex string and the transition from initial phase separation (phase mixing) to phase mixing (phase separation). Furthermore, the peculiar spin textures including skyrmion lattice, skyrmion pair and skyrmion string are revealed in this system.

Network Inoculation: Heteroclinics and phase transitions in an epidemic model

In epidemiological modelling, dynamics on networks, and in particular adaptive and heterogeneous networks have recently received much interest. Here we present a detailed analysis of a previously proposed model that combines heterogeneity in the individuals with adaptive rewiring of the network structure in response to a disease. We show that in this model qualitative changes in the dynamics occur in two phase transitions. In a macroscopic description one of these corresponds to a local bifurcation whereas the other one corresponds to a non-local heteroclinic bifurcation. This model thus provides a rare example of a system where a phase transition is caused by a non-local bifurcation, while both micro- and macro-level dynamics are accessible to mathematical analysis. The bifurcation points mark the onset of a behaviour that we call network inoculation. In the respective parameter region exposure of the system to a pathogen will lead to an outbreak that collapses, but leaves the network in a configuration where the disease cannot reinvade, despite every agent returning to the susceptible class. We argue that this behaviour and the associated phase transitions can be expected to occur in a wide class of models of sufficient complexity.

A Term-Based Methodology for Query Reformulation Understanding

Key to any research involving session search is the understanding of how a user's queries evolve throughout the session. When a user creates a query reformulation, he or she is consciously retaining terms from their original query, removing others and adding new terms. By measuring the similarity between queries we can make inferences on the user's information need and how successful their new query is likely to be. By identifying the origins of added terms we can infer the user's motivations and gain an understanding of their interactions. In this paper we present a novel term-based methodology for understanding and interpreting query reformulation actions. We use TREC Session Track data to demonstrate how our technique is able to learn from query logs and we make use of click data to test user interaction behavior when reformulating queries. We identify and evaluate a range of term-based query reformulation strategies and show that our methods provide valuable insight into understanding query reformulation in session search.
