Inertial Bregman Proximal Gradient Algorithm For Nonconvex Problem with Smooth Adaptable Property

In this paper we study the problems of minimizing the sum of two nonconvex functions: one is differentiable and satisfies smooth adaptable property. The smooth adaptable property, also named relatively smooth condition, is weaker than the globally gradient Lipschitz continuity. We analyze an inertial version of the Bregman Proximal Gradient (BPG) algorithm and prove its stationary convergence. Besides, we prove a sublinear convergence of the inertial algorithm. Moreover, if the objective function satisfies Kurdyka--Łojasiewicz (KL) property, its global convergence to a critical point of the objective function can be also guaranteed.

Pulsar Candidate Selection Using Ensemble Networks for FAST Drift-Scan Survey

The Commensal Radio Astronomy Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) Survey (CRAFTS) utilizes the novel drift-scan commensal survey mode of FAST and can generate billions of pulsar candidate signals. The human experts are not likely to thoroughly examine these signals, and various machine sorting methods are used to aid the classification of the FAST candidates. In this study, we propose a new ensemble classification system for pulsar candidates. This system denotes the further development of the pulsar image-based classification system (PICS), which was used in the Arecibo Telescope pulsar survey, and has been retrained and customized for the FAST drift-scan survey. In this study, we designed a residual network model comprising 15 layers to replace the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in PICS. The results of this study demonstrate that the new model can sort >96% of real pulsars to belong the top 1% of all candidates and classify >1.6 million candidates per day using a dual--GPU and 24--core computer. This increased speed and efficiency can help to facilitate real-time or quasi-real-time processing of the pulsar-search data stream obtained from CRAFTS. In addition, we have published the labeled FAST data used in this study online, which can aid in the development of new deep learning techniques for performing pulsar searches.

A New Exact Worst-Case Linear Convergence Rate of the Proximal Gradient Method

In this note, we establish a new exact worst-case linear convergence rate of the proximal gradient method in terms of the proximal gradient norm, which complements the recent results in [1] and implies a refined descent lemma.descent lemma. Based on the new lemma, we improve the linear convergence rate of the objective function accuracy under the Polyak-Lojasiewicz inequality.

Training GANs with Centripetal Acceleration

Training generative adversarial networks (GANs) often suffers from cyclic behaviors of iterates. Based on a simple intuition that the direction of centripetal acceleration of an object moving in uniform circular motion is toward the center of the circle, we present the Simultaneous Centripetal Acceleration (SCA) method and the Alternating Centripetal Acceleration (ACA) method to alleviate the cyclic behaviors. Under suitable conditions, gradient descent methods with either SCA or ACA are shown to be linearly convergent for bilinear games. Numerical experiments are conducted by applying ACA to existing gradient-based algorithms in a GAN setup scenario, which demonstrate the superiority of ACA.

Grassmannian Codes with New Distance Measures for Network Coding

Grassmannian codes are known to be useful in error-correction for random network coding. Recently, they were used to prove that vector network codes outperform scalar linear network codes, on multicast networks, with respect to the alphabet size. The multicast networks which were used for this purpose are generalized combination networks. In both the scalar and the vector network coding solutions, the subspace distance is used as the distance measure for the codes which solve the network coding problem in the generalized combination networks. In this work we show that the subspace distance can be replaced with two other possible distance measures which generalize the subspace distance. These two distance measures are shown to be equivalent under an orthogonal transformation. It is proved that the Grassmannian codes with the new distance measures generalize the Grassmannian codes with the subspace distance and the subspace designs with the strength of the design. Furthermore, optimal Grassmannian codes with the new distance measureshave minimal requirements for network coding solutions of some generalized combination networks. The coding problems related to these two distance measures, especially with respect to network coding, are discussed. Finally, by using these new concepts it is proved that codes in the Hamming scheme form a subfamily of the Grassmannian codes.

Exoplanets in the Antarctic sky. II. 116 Transiting Exoplanet Candidates Found by AST3-II (CHESPA) within the Southern CVZ of TESS

We report first results from the CHinese Exoplanet Searching Program from Antarctica (CHESPA)---a wide-field high-resolution photometric survey for transiting exoplanets carried out using telescopes of the AST3 (Antarctic Survey Telescopes times 3) project. There are now three telescopes (AST3-I, AST3-II, and CSTAR-II) operating at Dome A---the highest point on the Antarctic Plateau---in a fully automatic and remote mode to exploit the superb observing conditions of the site, and its long and uninterrupted polar nights. The search for transiting exoplanets is one of the key projects for AST3. During the Austral winters of 2016 and 2017 we used the AST3-II telescope to survey a set of target fields near the southern ecliptic pole, falling within the continuous viewing zone of the TESS mission \citep{Ricker10}. The first data release of the 2016 data, including images, catalogs and lightcurves of 26578 bright stars ($7.5\le i \le15$) was presented in \citet{Zhang18}. The best precision, as measured by the RMS of the lightcurves at the optimum magnitude of the survey ($i=10$), is around 2\,mmag. We detect 222 objects with plausible transit signals from these data, 116 of which are plausible transiting exoplanet candidates according to their stellar properties as given by the TESS Input Catalog \citep{Stassun17}, Gaia DR2 \citep{Gaia18} and TESS-HERMES spectroscopy \citep{Sharma18}. With the first data release from TESS expected in late 2018, this candidate list will be a timely for improving the rejection of potential false positives.

Exoplanets in the Antarctic Sky. I. The First Data Release of AST3-II (CHESPA) and New Found Variables within the Southern CVZ of TESS

Located at Dome A, the highest point of the Antarctic plateau, the Chinese Kunlun station is considered to be one of the best ground-based photometric sites because of its extremely cold, dry, and stable atmosphere(Saunders et al. 2009). A target can be monitored from there for over 40 days without diurnal interruption during a polar winter. This makes Kunlun station a perfect site to search for short-period transiting exoplanets. Since 2008, an observatory has been built at Kunlun station and three telescopes are working there. Using these telescopes, the AST3 project has been carried out over the last six years with a search for transiting exoplanets as one of its key programs (CHESPA). In the austral winters of 2016 and 2017, a set of target fields in the Southern CVZ of TESS (Ricker et al. 2009) were monitored by the AST3-II telescope. In this paper, we introduce the CHESPA and present the first data release containing photometry of 26,578 bright stars (m_i < 15). The best photometric precision at the optimum magnitude for the survey is around 2 mmag. To demonstrate the data quality, we also present a catalog of 221 variables with a brightness variation greater than 5 mmag from the 2016 data. Among these variables, 179 are newly identified periodic variables not listed in the AAVSO databasea), and 67 are listed in the Candidate Target List(Stassun et al. 2017). These variables will require careful attention to avoid false-positive signals when searching for transiting exoplanets. Dozens of new transiting exoplanet candidates will be also released in a subsequent paper(Zhang et al. 2018b).

Estimation of Inter-Sentiment Correlations Employing Deep Neural Network Models

This paper focuses on sentiment mining and sentiment correlation analysis of web events. Although neural network models have contributed a lot to mining text information, little attention is paid to analysis of the inter-sentiment correlations. This paper fills the gap between sentiment calculation and inter-sentiment correlations. In this paper, the social emotion is divided into six categories: love, joy, anger, sadness, fear, and surprise. Two deep neural network models are presented for sentiment calculation. Three datasets - the titles, the bodies, the comments of news articles - are collected, covering both objective and subjective texts in varying lengths (long and short). From each dataset, three kinds of features are extracted: explicit expression, implicit expression, and alphabet characters. The performance of the two models are analyzed, with respect to each of the three kinds of the features. There is controversial phenomenon on the interpretation of anger (fn) and love (gd). In subjective text, other emotions are easily to be considered as anger. By contrast, in objective news bodies and titles, it is easy to regard text as caused love (gd). It means, journalist may want to arouse emotion love by writing news, but cause anger after the news is published. This result reflects the sentiment complexity and unpredictability.

A power law decay evolution scenario for polluted single white dwarfs

Planetary systems can survive the stellar evolution, as evidenced by the atmospheric metal pollution and dusty disks of single white dwarfs. Recent observations show that 1 to 4 percent of single white dwarfs are accompanied by dusty disks, while the occurrence rate of metal pollution is about 25 to 50 percent . The dusty disks and metal pollution have been associated with accretion of remnant planetary systems around white dwarfs, yet the relation between these two phenomena is still unclear. Here we suggest an evolutionary scenario to link the two observational phenomena. By analyzing a sample of metal polluted white dwarfs, we find that the mass accretion rate onto the white dwarf generally follows a broken power law decay, which matches well with the theoretical prediction, if assuming dust accretion is primarily driven by Poynting-Robertson drag and the dust source is primarily delivered via dynamically falling asteroids perturbed by a Jovian planet. The presence of disks is mainly at the early stage (about 0.1 to 0.7 billion years) of the whole process of metal pollution, which is detectable until about 8 billion years, naturally explaining the fraction (about 2-16 percent) of metal-polluted white dwarfs having dusty disks. The success of this scenario also implies that the configuration of an asteroid belt with an outer gas giant might be common around stars of several solar masses.

Designing ABO3 crystal structure with Lennard-Jones interatomic potentials

In this paper, our goal is to design ABO3 crystal structure with simple interatomic Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials and without setting any initial Bravais lattice and it is carried out by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In the simulation, the equilibrium distances between atoms are determined by LJ potentials. For the identification of the microstructure of simulated system, we have calculated the distribution functions of both the angles between one atom and its nearest neighbors and the distances between atoms and compared the results with those of ideal lattices. The results have clearly shown that we have successfully produced ABO3 crystal structure by MD simulation.

Single Crystalline Silver Films for Plasmonics: From Monolayer to Optically Thick Film

Epitaxial growth of single crystalline noble metals on dielectric substrates has received tremendous attention recently due to their technological potentials as low loss plasmonic materials. Currently there are two different growth approaches, each with its strengths and weaknesses. One adopts a sophisticated molecular beam epitaxial procedure to grow atomically smooth epitaxial Ag films. However, the procedure is rather slow and becomes impractical to grow films with thickness > 50 nm. Another approach adopts a growth process using rapid e-beam deposition which is capable of growing single crystalline Ag films in the thick regime (> 300 nm). However, the rapid growth procedure makes it difficult to control film thickness precisely, i.e., the method is not applicable to growing thin epitaxial films. Here we report a universal approach to grow atomically smooth epitaxial Ag films with precise thickness control from a few monolayers to the optically thick regime, overcoming the limitations of the two aforementioned methods. In addition, we develop an in-situ growth of aluminum oxide as the capping layer which exhibits excellent properties protecting the epitaxial Ag films. The performance of the epitaxial Ag films as a function of the film thickness is investigated by directly measuring the propagation length of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) as well as their device performance to support a waveguide plasmonic nanolaser in infrared incorporating an InGaAsP quantum well as the gain media.

Photo-evaporation of proto-planetary gas discs due to flybys of external single stars in different orbits

During the evolution of proto-planetary disc, photo-evaporations of both central and external stars play important roles. Considering the complicated radiation surroundings in the clusters, where the star formed, the proto-planetary discs survive in different lifetimes due to flyby events. In this paper, we mainly focus on the disc around a T Tauri star, which encounters with another main-sequence star with different temperatures in hyperbolic orbits with different peri-center distances, eccentricities and inclinations. We find the criterion for gap-opening due to photo-evaporation of central star after the flyby event. A gap is opened in the late stage of gas disc, and induce that the gap only influence the planet formation and migration limitedly. If the flyby orbit has a moderate value of peri-center distance, which weakly depends on the eccentricity and inclination, the external photo-evaporation lead to a maximum mass loss during the flyby event. Flyby stars in orbits with smaller eccentricities or larger inclinations induce larger mass loss. Adopting a simple multiple flyby models, we conclude that in open clusters, gas discs usually survive in typical lifetimes between 1 and 10 Myr, except there are many massive stars in dense open clusters. In globular clusters, discs disperse very quickly and hardly produce the gas giant planets. The fast-depleted discs are probably responsible for the null detection of giant planets in globular clusters.

Global Complexity Analysis of Inexact Successive Quadratic Approximation methods for Regularized Optimization under Mild Assumptions

Successive quadratic approximations (SQA) are numerically efficient for minimizing the sum of a smooth function and a convex function. The iteration complexity of inexact SQA methods has been analyzed recently. In this paper, we present an algorithmic framework of inexact SQA methods with four types of line searches, and analyze its global complexity under milder assumptions. First, we show its well-definedness and some decreasing properties. Second, under the quadratic growth condition and a uniform positive lower bound condition on stepsizes, we show that the function value sequence and the iterate sequence are linearly convergent. Moreover, we obtain a o(1/k) complexity without the quadratic growth condition, improving existing O(1/k) complexity results. At last, we show that a local gradient-Lipschitz-continuity condition could guarantee a uniform positive lower bound for the stepsizes.

Transiting Exoplanet Monitoring Project (TEMP). I. Refined System Parameters and Transit Timing Variations of HAT-P-29b

We report the photometry of six transits of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-29b obtained from 2013 October to 2015 January. We analyze the new light curves, in combination with the published photometric, and Doppler velocimetric, and spectroscopic measurements, finding an updated orbital ephemeris for the HAT-P-29 system, $T_{\rm C}[0]= 2456170.5494(15)\,[\rm{BJD_{TDB}}]$ and $P=5.723390(13) \,{\rm days}$. It is $17.63\,{\rm s}$ ($4.0\,σ$) longer than the previously published value, amounting to errors exceeding $2.5\,\rm{hrs}$ at the time of writing (on UTC 2018 June 1). The measured transit mid-times for HAT-P-29b show no compelling evidence of timing anomalies from a linear model, which rules out the presence of a perturbers with masses greater than $0.6$, $0.7$, $0.5$, and $0.4\,{\rm M_\oplus}$ near the $1:2$, $2:3$, $3:2$, and $2:1$ resonances with HAT-P-29b, respectively.

Chiral Magnetic Effect in Isobaric Collisions from Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD)

The isobaric collision experiment at RHIC provides the unique opportunity to detect the possible signal of Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions. The idea is to contrast the correlation observables of the two colliding systems that supposedly have identical flow-driven background contributions while quite different CME signal contributions due to the 10% variation in their nuclear charge and thus magnetic field strength. With the recently developed quantitative simulation tool for computing CME signal, the Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD), we demonstrate that a joint (multiplicity + elliptic-flow) event selection is crucial for this purpose. We further propose to use the absolute difference between RuRu and ZrZr events (after using identical event selection) for detecting CME signal and make predictions for the correlation observables.

Lennard-Jones interatomic potentials for the allotropes of carbon

Finding appropriate interatomic potentials which can accurately describe the crystal structure of material is one of important topics in material science. In this paper, several interatomic potentials which comprise of Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials have been proposed for describing both the crystal structures and the evolution of microstructure of the allotropes of carbon such as diamond and graphite. The validity of these LJ potentials can be checked by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. For the lattice identification of simulated systems, we have calculated the distribution functions of the angles between one atom and its nearest neighbors and the distances between atoms and checked the atomic arrangements. Our simulated results have clearly demonstrated that we have successfully produced diamond and graphite structures by MD simulations and with the above LJ potentials.

A generative model of realistic brain cells with application to numerical simulation of diffusion-weighted MR signal

In this work, we introduce a novel computational framework that we developed to use numerical simulations to investigate the complexity of brain tissue at a microscopic level with a detail never realised before. Directly inspired by the advances in computational neuroscience for modelling brain cells, we propose a generative model that enables us to simulate molecular diffusion within realistic digitalised brain cells, such as neurons and glia, in a completely controlled and flexible fashion. We validate our new approach by showing an excellent match between the morphology and simulated DW-MR signal of the generated digital model of brain cells and those of digital reconstruction of real brain cells from available open-access databases. We demonstrate the versatility and potentiality of the framework by showing a select set of examples of relevance for the DW-MR community. Further development is ongoing, which will support even more realistic conditions like dense packing of numerous 3D complex cell structures and varying cell surface permeability.

Crystallization and non-crystallization of Lennard-Jones particles studied by molecular dynamics simulation

What lattice Lennard-Jones (LJ) solid favors, the lattice identification of simulated system and the microstructures of liquid and non-crystalline solid are three important questions in condensed physics and material science and are addressed in this paper. Both the crystallization and non-crystallization of LJ particles have been investigated by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation without setting any initial Bravais lattice. To identify the Bravais lattice of simulated system, two distribution functions of both the angles between one particle and its nearest neighbors and the distances between particles have been proposed. The final identification can be made by comparing these two calculated distribution functions with those of ideal Bravais lattices and checking the particle arrangement of simulated system. Our results have shown that simulated systems show either the face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice or the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) lattice. The microstructure of non-crystalline system is similar to that of LJ liquid at a temperature near the crystallization temperature, and shows no order of the second nearest neighbors in comparison with that of crystalline system. This paper has proposed a new way of investigating the microstructure of material and its evolution, and paved the way for MD simulation of large scale particle system consisting of more than one million particles.
