Robust analysis $\ell_1$-recovery from Gaussian measurements and total variation minimization

Analysis $\ell_1$-recovery refers to a technique of recovering a signal that is sparse in some transform domain from incomplete corrupted measurements. This includes total variation minimization as an important special case when the transform domain is generated by a difference operator. In the present paper we provide a bound on the number of Gaussian measurements required for successful recovery for total variation and for the case that the analysis operator is a frame. The bounds are particularly suitable when the sparsity of the analysis representation of the signal is not very small.

Eclipsing Binaries From the CSTAR Project at Dome A, Antarctica

The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) has observed an area around the Celestial South Pole at Dome A since 2008. About $20,000$ light curves in the i band were obtained lasting from March to July, 2008. The photometric precision achieves about 4 mmag at i = 7.5 and 20 mmag at i = 12 within a 30 s exposure time. These light curves are analyzed using Lomb--Scargle, Phase Dispersion Minimization, and Box Least Squares methods to search for periodic signals. False positives may appear as a variable signature caused by contaminating stars and the observation mode of CSTAR. Therefore the period and position of each variable candidate are checked to eliminate false positives. Eclipsing binaries are removed by visual inspection, frequency spectrum analysis and locally linear embedding technique. We identify 53 eclipsing binaries in the field of view of CSTAR, containing 24 detached binaries, 8 semi-detached binaries, 18 contact binaries, and 3 ellipsoidal variables. To derive the parameters of these binaries, we use the Eclipsing Binaries via Artificial Intelligence (EBAI) method. The primary and the secondary eclipse timing variations (ETVs) for semi-detached and contact systems are analyzed. Correlated primary and secondary ETVs confirmed by false alarm tests may indicate an unseen perturbing companion. Through ETV analysis, we identify two triple systems (CSTAR J084612.64-883342.9 and CSTAR J220502.55-895206.7). The orbital parameters of the third body in CSTAR J220502.55-895206.7 are derived using a simple dynamical model.

The baryon mass calculation in the chiral soliton model at finite temperature and density

In the mean-field approximation, we have studied the soliton which is embedded in a thermal medium within the chiral soliton model. The energy of the soliton or the baryon mass in the thermal medium has been carefully evaluated, in which we emphasize that the thermal effective potential in the soliton energy should be properly treated in order to derive a finite and well-defined baryon mass out of the thermal background. The result of the baryon mass at finite temperatures and densities in chiral soliton model are clearly presented.

A remark on weaken restricted isometry property in compressed sensing

The restricted isometry property (RIP) has become well-known in the compressed sensing community. Recently, a weaken version of RIP was proposed for exact sparse recovery under weak moment assumptions. In this note, we prove that the weaken RIP is also sufficient for \textsl{stable and robust} sparse recovery by linking it with a recently introduced robust width property in compressed sensing. Moreover, we show that it can be widely apply to other compressed sensing instances as well.

Topic Level Disambiguation for Weak Queries

Despite limited success, information retrieval (IR) systems today are not intelligent or reliable. IR systems return poor search results when users formulate their information needs into incomplete or ambiguous queries (i.e., weak queries). Therefore, one of the main challenges in modern IR research is to provide consistent results across all queries by improving the performance on weak queries. However, existing IR approaches such as query expansion are not overly effective because they make little effort to analyze and exploit the meanings of the queries. Furthermore, word sense disambiguation approaches, which rely on textual context, are ineffective against weak queries that are typically short. Motivated by the demand for a robust IR system that can consistently provide highly accurate results, the proposed study implemented a novel topic detection that leveraged both the language model and structural knowledge of Wikipedia and systematically evaluated the effect of query disambiguation and topic-based retrieval approaches on TREC collections. The results not only confirm the effectiveness of the proposed topic detection and topic-based retrieval approaches but also demonstrate that query disambiguation does not improve IR as expected.

Early Phase Detection and Coverage of Extragalactic and Galactic Black Hole X-ray Transients with the SKA

SKA's large field of view and high sensitivity at low frequencies will provide almost a complete coverage of the very early rising phase of extragalactic and Galactic transients which undergo a flare or outburst due to an abrupt accretion onto either supermassive (such as tidal disruption events, TDEs) or stellar mass black hole transients (such as black hole LMXB) , when their broadband emission is supposed to be jet-dominated at low luminosities, allowing SKA to be the first facility to make source discoveries and to send out alerts for follow-up ground or space observations as compared with the sensitivity of future X-ray wide-field-view monitoring. On the other hand, due to extremely large rate-of-change in the mass accretion rate during the rising phase of TDE flares or transient outbursts, SKA will be able to cover an extremely large range of the mass accretion rate as well as its rate-of-change not accessible with observations in persistent black hole systems, which will shape our understanding of disk-jet coupling in accreting black holes in the non-stationary accretion regimes.

Variants of alternating minimization method with sublinear rates of convergence for convex optimization

The alternating minimization (AM) method is a fundamental method for minimizing convex functions whose variable consists of two blocks. How to efficiently solve each subproblems when applying the AM method is the most concerned task. In this paper, we investigate this task and design two new variants of the AM method by borrowing proximal linearized techniques. The first variant is very suitable for the case where half of the subproblems are hard to be solved and the other half can be directly computed. The second variant is designed for parallel computation. Both of them are featured by simplicity at each iteration step. Theoretically, with the help of the proximal operator we first write the new as well as the existing AM variants into uniform expressions, and then prove that they enjoy sublinear rates of convergence under very minimal assumptions.

Eight Planets in Four Multi-planet Systems via Transit Timing Variations in 1350 Days

Analysis of the transit timing variations (TTVs) of candidate pairs near mean-motion resonances (MMRs) is an effective method to confirm planets. Hitherto, 68 planets in 34 multi-planet systems have been confirmed via TTVs. We analyze the TTVs of all candidates from the most recent Kepler data with a time span as long as about 1350 days (Q0-Q15). The anti-correlations of TTV signals and the mass upper limits of candidate pairs in the same system are calculated, using an improved method suitable for long-period TTVs. If the false alarm probability (FAP) of a candidate pair is less than 10^{-3} and the mass upper limit for each candidate is less than 13 M_J, we confirm them as planets in the same system. Finally, 8 planets in 4 multi-planet systems are confirmed via analysis of their TTVs. All of the 4 planet pairs are near first-order MMRs, including KOI-2672 near 2:1 MMR, KOI-1236, KOI-1563 and KOI-2038 near 3:2 MMR. Four planets have relatively long orbital periods (> 35 day). KOI-2672.01 has a period of 88.51658 days and a fit mass of 17 M_\oplus. It is the longest-period planet confirmed, to date, near first-order MMR via TTVs.

Synthesis, Structural, and Transport Properties of Cr-doped BaTi_2As_2O

The interplay between unconventional superconductivity and the ordering of charge/spin density wave is one of the most vital issues in both condensed matter physics and material science. The Ti-based compound BaTi_2As_2O, which can be seen as the parent phase of superconducting BaTi_2Sb_2O, has a layered structure with a space group P4/mmm, similar to that of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. This material exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) ordering transition revealed by an anomaly at around 200 K in transport measurements. Here, we report the synthesis and systematical study of the physical properties in Cr-doped BaTi_{2-x}Cr_xAs_2O (x = 0 - 0.154), and demonstrate that the transition temperature of the CDW ordering is suppressed gradually by the doped Cr element. The magnetization measurements confirm the evolution of the CDW ordering transition. These observed behaviors are similar to that observed in iron-based superconductors, but no superconductivity emerges down to 2 K. In addition, the first-principles calculations are also carried out for well-understanding the nature of experimental observations.

Constructions of Optimal and Near-Optimal Multiply Constant-Weight Codes

Multiply constant-weight codes (MCWCs) have been recently studied to improve the reliability of certain physically unclonable function response. In this paper, we give combinatorial constructions for MCWCs which yield several new infinite families of optimal MCWCs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Johnson type upper bounds of MCWCs are asymptotically tight for fixed weights and distances. Finally, we provide bounds and constructions of two dimensional MCWCs.

One condition for solution uniqueness and robustness of both l1-synthesis and l1-analysis minimizations

The $\ell_1$-synthesis model and the $\ell_1$-analysis model recover structured signals from their undersampled measurements. The solution of former is a sparse sum of dictionary atoms, and that of the latter makes sparse correlations with dictionary atoms. This paper addresses the question: when can we trust these models to recover specific signals? We answer the question with a condition that is both necessary and sufficient to guarantee the recovery to be unique and exact and, in presence of measurement noise, to be robust. The condition is one--for--all in the sense that it applies to both of the $\ell_1$-synthesis and $\ell_1$-analysis models, to both of their constrained and unconstrained formulations, and to both the exact recovery and robust recovery cases. Furthermore, a convex infinity--norm program is introduced for numerically verifying the condition. A comprehensive comparison with related existing conditions are included.

Developing an aqueous approach for synthesizing Au and M@Au (M = Pd, CuPt) hybrid nanostars with plasmonic properties

Anisotropic Au nanoparticles show unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, which make it attractive in optical, sensing, and biomedical applications. In this contribution, we report a general and facile strategy towards aqueous synthesis of Au and M@Au (M = Pd, CuPt) hybrid nanostars by reducing HAuCl4 with ethanolamine in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). According to electron microscopic observation and spectral monitoring, we found that the layered epitaxial growth mode (i.e., Frank-van der Merwe mechanism) contributes to the enlargement of the core, while, the random attachment of Au nanoclusters onto the cores accounts for the formation of the branches. Both of them are indispensable for the formation of the nanostars. The LSPR properties of the Au nanoparticles have been well investigated with morphology control via precursor amount and growth temperature. The Au nanostars showed improved surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance for rhodamine 6G due to their sharp edges and tips, which were therefore confirmed as good SERS substrate to detect trace amount of molecules.

Probing the Topological Phase Transition via Density Oscillations in Silicene and Germanene

We theoretically investigated two kinds of density oscillations: the Friedel oscillation and collective excitation in the silicene and germanene within random phase approximation, and found that the tunable spin-valley coupled band structure could lead to some exotic properties in such two phenomena. Based on the exact analytical and numerical analysis, we demonstrated that the beating of screened potential as well as the undamped plasmon mode can be taken as fingerprints of topological phase transition in doped silicene and doped germanene. Thus our proposal here establishes the connection between the topological phase transition and the density oscillations that can be accessed by a variety of experimental techniques.

Projected shrinkage algorithm for box-constrained L1-minimization

Box-constrained L1-minimization can perform remarkably better than classical L1-minimization when correction box constraints are available. And also many practical L1-minimization models indeed involve box constraints because they take certain values from some interval. In this paper, we propose an efficient iteration scheme, namely projected shrinkage (ProShrink) algorithm, to solve a class of box-constrained L1-minimization problems. A key contribution in our technique is that a complicated proximal point operator appeared in the deduction can be equivalently simplified into a projected shrinkage operator. Theoretically, we prove that ProShrink enjoys a convergence of both the primal and dual point sequences. On the numerical level, we demonstrate the benefit of adding box constraints via sparse recovery experiments.

Transits of Planets with Small Intervals in Circumbinary Systems

Transit times around single stars can be described well by a linear ephemeris. However, transit times in circumbinary systems are influenced both by the gravitational perturbations and the orbital phase variations of the central binary star. Adopting a coplanar analog of Kepler-16 as an example, we find that circumbinary planets can transit the same star more than once during a single planetary orbit, a phenomenon we call "tight transits". In certain geometric, the projected orbital velocity of the planet and the secondary star can approach zero and change sign, resulting in very long transits and/or 2-3 transits during a single binary orbit. Whether tight transits are possible for a particular system depends primarily on the binary mass ratio and the orbital architecture of both the binary and the planet. We derive a time-dependent criterion to judge when tight transits are possible for any circumbinary system. These results are verified with full dynamical integrations that also reveal other tight transit characteristics, i.e., the transit durations and the intervals between tight transits. For the seven currently known circumbinary systems, we estimate these critical parameters both analytically and numerically. Due to the mutual inclination between the planet and the binary, tight transits can only occur across the less massive star B in Kepler-16, -34, -35, and -47 (for both planets). The long-term average frequency of tight transits (compared to typical transits) for Kepler-16, -34, and -35 are estimated to be several percent. Using full numerical integrations, the next tight transit for each system is predicted and the soonest example appears to be Kepler-47b and -47c, which are likely to have tight transits before 2025. These unique and valuable events often deserve special observational scrutiny.

Plasmonic Metastructures and Nanocomposites with a Narrow Transparency Window in a Broad Extinction Spectrum

We propose and describe plasmonic nanomaterials with unique optical properties. These nanostructured materials strongly attenuate light in a broad wavelength interval ranged from 400 nm to 5 um but exhibit a narrow transparency window centered at a given wavelength. The main elements are nanorods and nano-crosses of variable sizes. The nanomaterial can be designed as a solution, nanocomposite film, metastructure or aerosol. The principle of the formation of the transparency window in the abroad extinction spectrum is based on the narrow lines of longitudinal plasmons of single nanorods and nanorod complexes. To realize the spectrum with a transmission window, we design a nanocomposite material as a mixture of nanorods of different sizes. Simultaneously, we exclude nanorods of certain length from the nanorod ensemble. The width of the plasmonic transparency window is determined by the intrinsic and radiative broadenings of the nanocrystal plasmons. We also describe the effect of narrowing of the transparency window with increasing the concentration of nanocrystals. Two well-established technologies can be used to fabricate such nano- and metamaterials, the colloidal synthesis and lithography. Nanocomposites proposed here can be used as optical materials and coatings for shielding of electromagnetic radiation in a wide spectral interval with a simultaneous possibility of communication using a narrow transparency window.

Proximal linearized iteratively reweighted least squares for a class of nonconvex and nonsmooth problems

For solving a wide class of nonconvex and nonsmooth problems, we propose a proximal linearized iteratively reweighted least squares (PL-IRLS) algorithm. We first approximate the original problem by smoothing methods, and second write the approximated problem into an auxiliary problem by introducing new variables. PL-IRLS is then built on solving the auxiliary problem by utilizing the proximal linearization technique and the iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) method, and has remarkable computation advantages. We show that PL-IRLS can be extended to solve more general nonconvex and nonsmooth problems via adjusting generalized parameters, and also to solve nonconvex and nonsmooth problems with two or more blocks of variables. Theoretically, with the help of the Kurdyka- Lojasiewicz property, we prove that each bounded sequence generated by PL-IRLS globally converges to a critical point of the approximated problem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first global convergence result of applying IRLS idea to solve nonconvex and nonsmooth problems. At last, we apply PL-IRLS to solve three representative nonconvex and nonsmooth problems in sparse signal recovery and low-rank matrix recovery and obtain new globally convergent algorithms.

Planetary Transit Candidates in the CSTAR Field: Analysis of the 2008 Data

The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) is a group of four identical, fully automated, static 14.5 cm telescopes. CSTAR is located at Dome A, Antarctica and covers 20 square degree of sky around the South Celestial Pole. The installation is designed to provide high-cadence photometry for the purpose of monitoring the quality of the astronomical observing conditions at Dome A and detecting transiting exoplanets. CSTAR has been operational since 2008, and has taken a rich and high-precision photometric data set of 10,690 stars. In the first observing season, we obtained 291,911 qualified science frames with 20-second integrations in the i-band. Photometric precision reaches about 4 mmag at 20-second cadence at i=7.5, and is about 20 mmag at i=12. Using robust detection methods, ten promising exoplanet candidates were found. Four of these were found to be giants using spectroscopic follow-up. All of these transit candidates are presented here along with the discussion of their detailed properties as well as the follow-up observations.
