Gated Convolutional Networks with Hybrid Connectivity for Image Classification

We propose a simple yet effective method to reduce the redundancy of DenseNet by substantially decreasing the number of stacked modules by replacing the original bottleneck by our SMG module, which is augmented by local residual. Furthermore, SMG module is equipped with an efficient two-stage pipeline, which aims to DenseNet-like architectures that need to integrate all previous outputs, i.e., squeezing the incoming informative but redundant features gradually by hierarchical convolutions as a hourglass shape and then exciting it by multi-kernel depthwise convolutions, the output of which would be compact and hold more informative multi-scale features. We further develop a forget and an update gate by introducing the popular attention modules to implement the effective fusion instead of a simple addition between reused and new features. Due to the Hybrid Connectivity (nested combination of global dense and local residual) and Gated mechanisms, we called our network as the HCGNet. Experimental results on CIFAR and ImageNet datasets show that HCGNet is more prominently efficient than DenseNet, and can also significantly outperform state-of-the-art networks with less complexity. Moreover, HCGNet also shows the remarkable interpretability and robustness by network dissection and adversarial defense, respectively. On MS-COCO, HCGNet can consistently learn better features than popular backbones.

Rethinking the Number of Channels for the Convolutional Neural Network

Latest algorithms for automatic neural architecture search perform remarkable but few of them can effectively design the number of channels for convolutional neural networks and consume less computational efforts. In this paper, we propose a method for efficient automatic architecture search which is special to the widths of networks instead of the connections of neural architecture. Our method, functionally incremental search based on function-preserving, will explore the number of channels rapidly while controlling the number of parameters of the target network. On CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 classification, our method using minimal computational resources (0.4~1.3 GPU-days) can discover more efficient rules of the widths of networks to improve the accuracy by about 0.5% on CIFAR-10 and a~2.33% on CIFAR-100 with fewer number of parameters. In particular, our method is suitable for exploring the number of channels of almost any convolutional neural network rapidly.

EENA: Efficient Evolution of Neural Architecture

Latest algorithms for automatic neural architecture search perform remarkable but are basically directionless in search space and computational expensive in training of every intermediate architecture. In this paper, we propose a method for efficient architecture search called EENA (Efficient Evolution of Neural Architecture). Due to the elaborately designed mutation and crossover operations, the evolution process can be guided by the information have already been learned. Therefore, less computational effort will be required while the searching and training time can be reduced significantly. On CIFAR-10 classification, EENA using minimal computational resources (0.65 GPU-days) can design highly effective neural architecture which achieves 2.56% test error with 8.47M parameters. Furthermore, the best architecture discovered is also transferable for CIFAR-100.

The Distance Measurements of Supernova Remnants in The Fourth Galactic Quadrant

We take advantage of the red clump stars to build the relation of the optical extinction (AV) and distance in each direction of supernova remnants (SNRs) with known extinction in the fourth Galactic quadrant. The distances of 9 SNRs are well determined by this method. Their uncertainties range from 10% to 30%, which is significantly improved for 8 SNRs, G279.0+1.1, G284.3-1.8, G296.1-0.5, G299.2-2.9, G308.4-1.4, G309.2-0.6, G309.8- 2.6, G332.4-0.4. In addition, SNR G284.3-1.8 with the new distance of 5.5 kpc is not likely associated with the PSR J1016-5857 at 3 kpc.

Stabilization of Damped Waves on Spheres and Zoll Surfaces of Revolution

We study the strong stabilization of wave equations on some sphere-like manifolds, with rough damping terms which do not satisfy the geometric control condition posed by Rauch-Taylor and Bardos-Lebeau-Rauch. We begin with an unpublished result of G. Lebeau, which states that on S^d , the indicator function of the upper hemisphere strongly stabilizes the damped wave equation, even though the equators, which are geodesics contained in the boundary of the upper hemisphere, do not enter the damping region. Then we extend this result on dimension 2, to Zoll surfaces of revolution, whose geometry is similar to that of S^2 . In particular, geometric objects such as the equator, and the hemi-surfaces are well defined. Our result states that the indicator function of the upper hemi-surface strongly stabilizes the damped wave equation, even though the equator, as a geodesic, does not enter the upper hemi-surface either.

The gas-to-extinction ratio and the gas distribution in the Galaxy

We investigate the relation between the optical extinction ($A_V$) and the hydrogen column density ($N_H$) determined from X-ray observations of a large sample of Galactic sightlines toward 35 supernova remnants, 6 planetary nebulae, and 70 X-ray binaries for which $N_H$ was determined in the literature with solar abundances. We derive an average ratio of ${N_H}/{A_V}=(2.08\pm0.02)\times10^{21}{\rm H\, cm^{-2}\, mag^{-1}}$ for the whole Galaxy. We find no correlation between ${N_H}/{A_V}$ and the number density of hydrogen, the distance away from the Galactic centre, and the distance above or below the Galactic plane. The ${N_H}/{A_V}$ ratio is generally invariant across the Galaxy, with ${N_H}/{A_V}=(2.04\pm0.05)\times10^{21}{\rm H\, cm^{-2}\, mag^{-1}}$ for the 1st and 4th Galactic quadrants and ${N_H}/{A_V}=(2.09\pm0.03)\times10^{21}{\rm H\, cm^{-2}\, mag^{-1}}$ for the 2nd and 3rd Galactic quadrants. We also explore the distribution of hydrogen in the Galaxy by enlarging our sample with additional 74 supernova remnants for which both $N_H$ and distances are known. We find that, between the Galactic radius of 2 kpc to 10 kpc, the vertical distribution of hydrogen can be roughly described by a Gaussian function with a scale height of $h=75.5\pm12.4\,{\rm pc}$ and a mid-plane density of $n_{H}(0)=1.11\pm0.15\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$, corresponding to a total gas surface density of ${\sum}_{gas}{\sim}7.0\,{M_{\bigodot}}\,{\rm pc^{-2}}$. We also compile $N_H$ from 19 supernova remnants and 29 X-ray binaries for which $N_H$ was determined with subsolar abundances. We obtain ${N_H}/{A_V}=(2.47\pm0.04)\times10^{21}{\rm H\, cm^{-2}\, mag^{-1}}$ which exceeds that derived with solar abundances by $\sim$20%. We suggest that in future studies one may simply scale $N_H$ derived from subsolar abundances by a factor of $\sim$1.2 when converting to $N_H$ of solar abundances.

Investigating the Impacts of Recommendation Agents on Impulsive Purchase Behaviour

The usage of recommendation agents (RAs) in the online marketplace can help consumers to locate their desired products. RAs can help consumers effectively obtain comprehensive product information and compare their candidate target products. As a result, RAs have affected consumers shopping behaviour. In this study, we investigate the usage and the influence of RAs in the online marketplace. Based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model, we propose that the stimulus of using RAs (informativeness, product search effectiveness and the lack of sociality stress) can affect consumers attitude (perceived control and satisfaction), which further affects their behavioural outcomes like impulsive purchase. We validate this research model with survey data from 157 users of RAs. The data largely support the proposed model and indicate that the RAs can significantly contribute to impulsive purchase behaviour in online marketplaces. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed.

Atomically Thin Resonant Tunnel Diodes built from Synthetic van der Waals Heterostructures

Vertical integration of two-dimensional van der Waals materials is predicted to lead to novel electronic and optical properties not found in the constituent layers. Here, we present the direct synthesis of two unique, atomically thin, multi-junction heterostructures by combining graphene with the monolayer transition-metal dichalocogenides: MoS2, MoSe2, and WSe2.The realization of MoS2-WSe2-Graphene and WSe2-MoSe2-Graphene heterostructures leads toresonant tunneling in an atomically thin stack with spectrally narrow room temperature negative differential resistance characteristics.

Investigations of supernovae and supernova remnants in the era of SKA

Two main physical mechanisms are used to explain supernova explosions: thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf(Type Ia) and core collapse of a massive star (Type II and Type Ib/Ic). Type Ia supernovae serve as distance indicators that led to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe. The exact nature of their progenitor systems however remain unclear. Radio emission from the interaction between the explosion shock front and its surrounding CSM or ISM provides an important probe into the progenitor star's last evolutionary stage. No radio emission has yet been detected from Type Ia supernovae by current telescopes. The SKA will hopefully detect radio emission from Type Ia supernovae due to its much better sensitivity and resolution. There is a 'supernovae rate problem' for the core collapse supernovae because the optically dim ones are missed due to being intrinsically faint and/or due to dust obscuration. A number of dust-enshrouded optically hidden supernovae should be discovered via SKA1-MID/survey, especially for those located in the innermost regions of their host galaxies. Meanwhile, the detection of intrinsically dim SNe will also benefit from SKA1. The detection rate will provide unique information about the current star formation rate and the initial mass function. A supernova explosion triggers a shock wave which expels and heats the surrounding CSM and ISM, and forms a supernova remnant (SNR). It is expected that more SNRs will be discovered by the SKA. This may decrease the discrepancy between the expected and observed numbers of SNRs. Several SNRs have been confirmed to accelerate protons, the main component of cosmic rays, to very high energy by their shocks. This brings us hope of solving the Galactic cosmic ray origin's puzzle by combining the low frequency (SKA) and very high frequency (Cherenkov Telescope Array: CTA) bands' observations of SNRs.

78 Pairs of Possible PSR-SNR Associations

We discuss the criteria to associate PSRs with SNRs, and summary 78 pairs of possible PSR-SNR associations which is the most complete sample so far. We refine them into three categories according to degree of reliability. Statistic study on PSR-SNR associations helps us understand massive star evolution and constrain pulsar's theory models.

Group structures of elementary supersingular abelian varieties over finite fields

Let A be a supersingular abelian variety over a finite field k. We give an approximate description of the structure of the group A(k) of rational points of A over k in terms of the characteristic polynomial f of the Frobenius endomorphism of A relative to k. If f=g^e for a monic irreducible polynomial g and a positive integer e, we show that there is a group homomorphism A(k) --> (Z/g(1)Z)^e whose kernel and cokernel are elementary abelian 2-groups. In particular, this map is an isomorphism if the characteristic of k is 2 or A is simple of dimension greater than 2; in the last case one has e=1 or 2, and A(k) is isomorphic to (Z/g(1)Z)^e.
