Global existence and scattering of small data smooth solutions to quasilinear wave systems on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$, II

In our previous paper [Fei Hou, Fei Tao, Huicheng Yin, Global existence and scattering of small data smooth solutions to a class of quasilinear wave systems on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$, Preprint (2024), arXiv:2405.03242], for the $Q_0$-type quadratic nonlinearities, we have shown the global well-posedness and scattering properties of small data smooth solutions to the quasilinear wave systems on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$. In this paper, we start to solve the global existence problem for the remaining $Q_{αβ}$-type nonlinearities. By combining these results, we have established the global well-posedness of small solutions on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$ for the general 3-D quadratically quasilinear wave systems when the related 2-D null conditions are fulfilled.

Global smooth solutions of 2D quasilinear wave equations with higher order null conditions and short pulse initial data

For the short pulse initial data with a first order outgoing constraint condition and optimal orders of smallness, we establish the global existence of smooth solutions to 2D quasilinear wave equations with higher order null conditions. Such kinds of wave equations include 2D relativistic membrane equations, 2D membrane equations, and some 2D quasilinear equations which come from the nonlinear Maxwell equations in electromagnetic theory or from the corresponding Lagrangian functionals as perturbations of the Lagrangian densities of linear wave operators. The main ingredients of the analysis here include looking for a new good unknown, finding some key identities based on the higher order null conditions and the resulting null frames, as well as overcoming the difficulties due to the slow decay of solutions to the 2-D wave equation, so that the solutions can be estimated precisely.

Global existence and scattering of small data smooth solutions to a class of quasilinear wave systems on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$

In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and scattering of small data smooth solutions to a class of quasilinear wave systems on the product space $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$. These quasilinear wave systems include 3D irrotational potential flow equation of Chaplygin gases, 3D relativistic membrane equation, some 3D quasilinear wave equations which come from the corresponding Lagrangian functionals as perturbations of the Lagrangian densities of linear waves, and nonlinear wave maps system. Through looking for some suitable transformations of unknown functions, the nonlinear wave system can be reduced into a more tractable form. Subsequently, by applying the vector-field method together with the ghost weight technique as well as deriving some kinds of weighted $L^\infty-L^\infty$ and $L^\infty-L^2$ estimates of solution $w$ to the 2D linear wave equation $\Box w=f(t,x)$, the global existence and scattering of small data solutions are established.

On global smooth solutions to the 2D isentropic and irrotational Chaplygin gases with short pulse data

This paper establishes the global existence of smooth solutions to the 2D isentropic and irrotational Euler equations for Chaplygin gases with a general class of short pulse initial data, which, in particular, resolves in this special case, the Majda's conjecture on the non-formation of shock waves of solutions from smooth initial data for multi-dimensional nonlinear symmetric systems which are totally linearly degenerate. Comparing to the 4D case, the major difficulties in this paper are caused by the slower time decay and the largeness of the solutions to the 2D quasilinear wave equation, some new auxiliary energies and multipliers are introduced to overcome these difficulties.

Almost global solutions of 1D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with small weakly decaying initial data

It has been known that if the initial data decay sufficiently fast at space infinity, then 1D Klein-Gordon equations with quadratic nonlinearity admit classical solutions up to time $e^{C/ε^2}$ while $e^{C/ε^2}$ is also the upper bound of the lifespan, where $C>0$ is some suitable constant and $ε>0$ is the size of the initial data. In this paper, we will focus on the 1D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with weakly decaying initial data. It is shown that if the $H^s$-Sobolev norm with $(1+|x|)^{1/2+}$ weight of the initial data is small, then the almost global solutions exist; if the initial $H^s$-Sobolev norm with $(1+|x|)^{1/2}$ weight is small, then for any $M>0$, the solutions exist on $[0,ε^{-M}]$. Our proof is based on the dispersive estimate with a suitable $Z$-norm and a delicate analysis on the phase function.

The partial null conditions and global smooth solutions of the nonlinear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{T}$ with $d=2,3$

In this paper, we investigate the fully nonlinear wave equations on the product space $\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{T}$ with quadratic nonlinearities and on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$ with cubic nonlinearities, respectively. It is shown that for the small initial data satisfying some space-decay rates at infinity, these nonlinear equations admit global smooth solutions when the corresponding partial null conditions hold and while have almost global smooth solutions when the partial null conditions are violated. Our proof relies on the Fourier mode decomposition of the solutions with respect to the periodic direction, the efficient combinations of time-decay estimates for the solutions to the linear wave equations and the linear Klein-Gordon equations, and the global weighted energy estimates. In addition, an interesting auxiliary energy is introduced. As a byproduct, our results can be applied to the 4D irrotational compressible Euler equations of polytropic gases or Chaplygin gases on $\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{T}$, the 3D relativistic membrane equation and the 3D nonlinear membrane equation on $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{T}$.

Long time solutions of quasilinear Klein-Gordon equations with small weakly decaying initial data

It is well known that for the quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation with quadratic nonlinearity and sufficiently decaying small initial data, there exists a global smooth solution if the space dimensions $d\geq2$. When the initial data are of size $\varepsilon>0$ in the Sobolev space, for the semilinear Klein-Gordon equation satisfying the null condition, the authors in the article (J.-M. Delort, Daoyuan Fang, Almost global existence for solutions of semilinear Klein-Gordon equations with small weakly decaying Cauchy data, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 25 (2000), no. 11-12, 2119--2169) prove that the solution exists in time $[0,T_\varepsilon)$ with $T_\varepsilon\ge Ce^{C\varepsilon^{-μ}}$ ($μ=1$ if $d\ge3$, $μ=2/3$ if $d=2$). In the present paper, we will focus on the general quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation without the null condition and further show that the existence time of the solution can be improved to $T_\varepsilon=+\infty$ if $d\geq3$ and $T_\varepsilon\ge e^{C\varepsilon^{-2}}$ if $d=2$. In addition, for $d=2$ and any fixed number $α>0$, if the weighted $L^2$ norm of the initial data with the weight $(1+|x|)^α$ is small, then the solution exists globally and scatters to a free solution. The arguments are based on the introduction of a good unknown, the Strichartz estimate, the weighted $L^2$-norm estimate and the resonance analysis.

On the critical exponent $p_c$ of the 3D quasilinear wave equation $-\big(1+(\partial_tϕ)^p\big)\partial_t^2ϕ+Δϕ=0$ with short pulse initial data. II, shock formation

In the previous paper [Ding Bingbing, Lu Yu, Yin Huicheng, On the critical exponent $p_c$ of the 3D quasilinear wave equation $-\big(1+(\partial_tϕ)^p\big)\partial_t^2ϕ+Δϕ=0$ with short pulse initial data. I, global existence, Preprint, 2022], for the 3D quasilinear wave equation $-\big(1+(\partial_tϕ)^p\big)\partial_t^2ϕ+Δϕ=0$ with short pulse initial data $(ϕ,\partial_tϕ)(1,x)=\big(δ^{2-\varepsilon_0}ϕ_0(\frac{r-1}δ,ω),δ^{1-\varepsilon_0}ϕ_1(\frac{r-1}δ,ω)\big)$, where $p\in\mathbb{N}$, $0<\varepsilon_0<1$, under the outgoing constraint condition $(\partial_t+\partial_r)^kϕ(1,x)=O(δ^{2-\varepsilon_0-k\max\{0,1-(1-\varepsilon_0)p\}})$ for $k=1,2$, the authors establish the global existence of smooth large solution $ϕ$ when $p>p_c$ with $p_c=\frac{1}{1-\varepsilon_0}$. In the present paper, under the same outgoing constraint condition, when $1\leq p\leq p_c$, we will show that the smooth solution $ϕ$ blows up and further the outgoing shock is formed in finite time.

On the critical exponent $p_c$ of the 3D quasilinear wave equation $-\big(1+(\partial_tϕ)^p\big)\partial_t^2ϕ+Δϕ=0$ with short pulse initial data. I, global existence

For the 3D quasilinear wave equation $-\big(1+(\partial_tϕ)^p\big)\partial_t^2ϕ+Δϕ=0$ with the short pulse initial data $(ϕ,\partial_tϕ)(1,x)=\big(δ^{2-\varepsilon_0}ϕ_0(\frac{r-1}δ,ω), δ^{1-\varepsilon_0}ϕ_1(\frac{r-1}δ,ω)\big)$, where $p\in\mathbb N$, $p\geq 2$, $0<\varepsilon_0<1$, $r=|x|$, $ω= \frac{x}{r}\in\mathbb S^2$, and $δ>0$ is sufficiently small, under the outgoing constraint condition $(\partial_t+\partial_r)^kϕ(1,x)=O(δ^{2-\varepsilon_0})$ for $k=1,2$, we will establish the global existence of smooth large data solution $ϕ$ when $p>p_c$ with $p_c=\frac{1}{1-\varepsilon_0}$ being the critical exponent. In the forthcoming paper, when $1\leq p\leq p_c$, we show the formation of the outgoing shock before the time $t=2$ under the suitable assumptions of $(ϕ_0,ϕ_1)$.

Almost global smooth solutions of the 3D quasilinear Klein-Gordon equations on the product space $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times \mathbb{T}$

In the paper, for the 3D quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation with the small initial data posed on the product space $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times \mathbb{T}$, we focus on the lower bound of the lifespan of the smooth solution. When the size of initial data is bounded by $\varepsilon_0>0$, by the space-time resonance method, it is shown that smooth solution exists up to the time $e^{c_{0}/\varepsilon_{0}^2}$ with $\varepsilon_0$ being sufficiently small and $c_0>0$ being some suitable constant.

On the blowup mechanism of smooth solutions to 1D quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems with large initial data

For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the blowup mechanism can be well understood (i.e., only the blowup of $\partial_{t,x}u$ happens). In the present paper, for the $n\times n$ ($n\geq 3$) strictly hyperbolic system with a class of large initial data, we are concerned with the blowup mechanism of smooth solution $u$ on the finite blowup time and the detailed singularity behaviours of $\partial_{t,x}u$ near the blowup point. Our results are based on the efficient decomposition of $u$ along the different characteristic directions, the suitable introduction of the modulated coordinates and the global weighted energy estimates.

Delayed singularity formation for the three dimensional compressible Euler equations with non-zero vorticity

For the 3D compressible isentropic Euler equations with an initial perturbation of size $\ve$ of a rest state, if the initial vorticity is of size $\dl$ with $0<\dl\le \ve$ and $\ve$ is small, we establish that the lifespan of the smooth solutions is $T_{\dl}=O(\min\{e^\frac{1}{\ve},\frac{1}δ\})$ for the polytropic gases, and $T_{\dl}=O(\frac{1}δ)$ for the Chaplygin gases. For example, when $\dl=e^{-\f{1}{\ve^2}}$ is chosen, then $T_{\dl}=O(e^{\f{1}{\ve}})$ for the polytropic gases and $T_{\dl}=O(e^{\f{1}{\ve^2}})$ for the Chaplygin gases although the perturbations of the initial density and the divergence of the initial velocity are only of order $O(\ve)$. Our result illustrates that the time of existence of smooth solutions depends crucially on the size of the vorticity of the initial data, as long as the initial data is sufficiently close to a constant. The main ingredients in the paper are: introducing some suitably weighted energies, deriving the pointwise space-time decay estimates of solutions, looking for the good unknown instead of the velocity, and establishing the required weighted estimates on the vorticty.

Long time existence of smooth solutions to 2D compressible Euler equations of Chaplygin gases with non-zero vorticity

For the 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of polytropic gases with an initial perturbation of size $\ve$ of a rest state, it has been known that if the initial data are rotationnally invariant or irrotational, then the lifespan $T_{\ve}$ of the classical solutions is of order $O(\f{1}{\ve^2})$; if the initial vorticity is of size $\ve^{1+\al}$ ($0\le\al\le 1$), then $T_{\ve}$ is of $O(\f{1}{\ve^{1+\al}})$. In the present paper, for the 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of Chaplygin gases, if the initial data are a perturbation of size $\ve$, and the initial vorticity is of any size $\dl$ with $0<\dl\le \ve$, we will establish the lifespan $T_{\dl}=O(\f{1}{\dl})$. For examples, if $\dl=e^{-\f{1}{\ve^2}}$ or $\dl=e^{-e^{\f{1}{\ve^2}}}$ are chosen, then $T_{\dl}=O(e^{\f{1}{\ve^2}})$ or $T_{\dl}=O(e^{e^{\f{1}{\ve^2}}})$ although the perturbations of the initial density and the divergence of the initial velocity are only of order $O(\ve)$. Our main ingredients are: finding the null condition structures in 2D compressible Euler equations of Chaplygin gases and looking for the good unknown; establishing a new class of weighted space-time $L^\infty$-$L^\infty$ estimates for the solution itself and its gradients of 2D linear wave equations; introducing some suitably weighted energies and taking the $L^p$ $(1<p<\infty)$ estimates on the vorticity.

On semilinear Tricomi equations in one space dimension

For 1-D semilinear Tricomi equation $\partial_t^2 u-t\partial_x^2u=|u|^p$ with initial data $(u(0,x), \partial_t u(0,x))$ $=(u_0(x), u_1(x))$, where $t\ge 0$, $x\in\mathbb{R}$, $p>1$, and $u_i\in C_0^\infty(\mathbb{R})$ ($i=0,1$), we shall prove that there exists a critical exponent $p_{\rm crit}=5$ such that the small data weak solution $u$ exists globally when $p>p_{\rm crit}$; on the other hand, the weak solution $u$, in general, blows up in finite time when $1 1$. By this paper and \cite{HWYin1}-\cite{HWYin3}, we have given a systematic study on the blowup or global existence of small data solution $u$ to the equation $\partial_t^2 u-tΔu=|u|^p$ for all space dimensions. One of the main ingredients in the paper is to establish a crucial weighted Strichartz-type inequality for 1-D linear degenerate equation $\partial_t^2 w-t\partial_x^2 w=F(t,x)$ with $(w(0,x), \partial_t w(0,x))=(0,0)$, i.e., an inequality with the weight $(\frac{4}{9}t^3-|x|^2)^α$ between the solution $w$ and the function $F$ is derived for some real numbers $α$.

Global smooth axisymmetric solutions to 2D compressible Euler equations of Chaplygin gases with non-zero vorticity

For 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of polytropic gases, when the rotationally invariant data are a perturbation of size $\ve>0$ of a rest state, S.~Alinhac in \cite{Alinhac92} and \cite{Alinhac93} establishes that the smooth solution blows up in finite time and the lifespan $T_{\ve}$ satisfies $\ds\lim_{\ve\to 0}\ve^2 T_{\ve}=τ_{0}^2>0$. In the present paper, for 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of Chaplygin gases, we shall show that the small perturbed smooth solution exists globally when the rotationally invariant data are a perturbation of size $\ve>0$ of a rest state. Near the light cone, 2D Euler equations of Chaplygin gases can be transformed into a second order quasilinear wave equation of potential, which satisfies both the first and the second null conditions. This will lead to that the corresponding second order quasilinear wave equation admits a global smooth solution near the light cone (see \cite{Alinhac01}). However, away from the light cone, the hydrodynamical waves of 2D Chaplygin gases have no decay in time and strongly affect the related acoustical waves. Thanks to introducing a nonlinear ODE and taking some delicate observations, we can distinguish the fast decay part and non-decay part explicitly so that the global energy estimates with different weights can be derived by involved analysis.

The global existence and large time behavior of smooth compressible fluid in an infinitely expanding ball, III: the 3-D Boltzmann equation

This paper is a continuation of the works in \cite{Euler} and \cite{NS}, where the authors have established the global existence of smooth compressible flows in infinitely expanding balls for inviscid gases and viscid gases, respectively. In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and large time behavior of compressible Boltzmann gases in an infinitely expanding ball. Such a problem is one of the interesting models in studying the theory of global smooth solutions to multidimensional compressible gases with time dependent boundaries and vacuum states at infinite time. Due to the conservation of mass, the fluid in the expanding ball becomes rarefied and eventually tends to a vacuum state meanwhile there are no appearances of vacuum domains in any part of the expansive ball, which is easily observed in finite time. In the present paper, we will confirm this physical phenomenon for the Boltzmann equation by obtaining the exact lower and upper bound on the macroscopic density function.

On the global existence and stability of 3-D viscous cylindrical circulatory flows

In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and stability of a 3-D perturbed viscous circulatory flow around an infinite long cylinder. This flow is described by 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations. By introducing some suitably weighted energy spaces and establishing a priori estimates, we show that the 3-D cylindrical symmetric circulatory flow is globally stable in time when the corresponding initial states are perturbed suitably small.

The global existence and large time behavior of smooth compressible fluid in an infinitely expanding ball, I: 3D Euler equations

We concern with the global existence and large time behavior of compressible fluids (including the inviscid gases, viscid gases, and Boltzmann gases) in an infinitely expanding ball. In this paper, as the first part of our three papers, we will confirm this physical phenomenon for the compressible inviscid fluids by obtaining the exact lower and upper bound on the density function.
