High-Dimensional Evolutionary Algorithm Based Design of Semi-Adder

Facing the physical limitations and energy consumption bottlenecks of traditional electronic devices, we propose an innovative design framework integrating evolutionary algorithms and metasurface technology, aiming to achieve intelligent inverse design of photonic devices. Based on a constructed high-dimensional evolutionary algorithm framework, a four-layer metasurface cascade regulation system was developed to realize the full optical physical expression of half-adder logic functions. This algorithm enables global optimization of 10000 unit parameters and can be extended to the design of more complex functional devices, thereby promoting goal-oriented and functional customization development

Toward a consistent performance evaluation for defect prediction models

In defect prediction community, many defect prediction models have been proposed and indeed more new models are continuously being developed. However, there is no consensus on how to evaluate the performance of a newly proposed model. In this paper, we aim to propose MATTER, a fraMework towArd a consisTenT pErformance compaRison, which makes model performance directly comparable across different studies. We take three actions to build a consistent evaluation framework for defect prediction models. First, we propose a simple and easy-to-use unsupervised baseline model ONE (glObal baseliNe modEl) to provide "a single point of comparison". Second, we propose using the SQA-effort-aligned threshold setting to make a fair comparison. Third, we suggest reporting the evaluation results in a unified way and provide a set of core performance indicators for this purpose, thus enabling an across-study comparison to attain real progress. The experimental results show that MATTER can serve as an effective framework to support a consistent performance evaluation for defect prediction models and hence can help determine whether a newly proposed defect prediction model is practically useful for practitioners and inform the real progress in the road of defect prediction. Furthermore, when applying MATTER to evaluate the representative defect prediction models proposed in recent years, we find that most of them (if not all) are not superior to the simple baseline model ONE in terms of the SQA-effort awareness prediction performance. This reveals that the real progress in defect prediction has been overestimated. We hence recommend that, in future studies, when any new defect prediction model is proposed, MATTER should be used to evaluate its actual usefulness (on the same benchmark test data sets) to advance scientific progress in defect prediction.

Overcoming Catastrophic Forgetting in Graph Neural Networks

Catastrophic forgetting refers to the tendency that a neural network "forgets" the previous learned knowledge upon learning new tasks. Prior methods have been focused on overcoming this problem on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), where the input samples like images lie in a grid domain, but have largely overlooked graph neural networks (GNNs) that handle non-grid data. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme dedicated to overcoming catastrophic forgetting problem and hence strengthen continual learning in GNNs. At the heart of our approach is a generic module, termed as topology-aware weight preserving~(TWP), applicable to arbitrary form of GNNs in a plug-and-play fashion. Unlike the main stream of CNN-based continual learning methods that rely on solely slowing down the updates of parameters important to the downstream task, TWP explicitly explores the local structures of the input graph, and attempts to stabilize the parameters playing pivotal roles in the topological aggregation. We evaluate TWP on different GNN backbones over several datasets, and demonstrate that it yields performances superior to the state of the art. Code is publicly available at \url{https://github.com/hhliu79/TWP}.

Photoacoustic Imaging of Lithium Metal Batteries

We demonstrate that photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) can be a potential novel imaging tool to investigate the Li metal dendrite growth, a critical issue leading to short circuit and even explosion of Li metal batteries. Our results suggest several advantages of PAM imaging of Li metal batteries: high resolution (micrometers), 3D imaging capability, deep penetration in a separator, and high contrast from bulk Li metal. Further, PAM has potential for in situ real-time imaging of Li metal batteries.

Atomistic manipulation of reversible oxidation and reduction in Ag by electron beam

Employing electrons for direct control of nanoscale reaction is highly desirable since it provides fabrication of nanostructures with different properties at atomic resolution and with flexibility of dimension and location. Here, applying in situ transmission electron microscopy, we show the reversible oxidation and reduction kinetics in Ag, well controlled by changing the dose rate of electron beam. Aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observation reveals that O atoms are preferably inserted and extracted along the {111} close-packed planes of Ag, leading to the nucleation and decomposition of nanoscale Ag2O islands on the Ag substrate. By controlling electron beam size and dose rate, we demonstrated fabrication of an array of 3 nm Ag2O nanodots in an Ag matrix. Our results open up a new pathway to manipulate atomistic reaction with electron beam towards the precise fabrication of nanostructures for device applications.
