Spin excitation anisotropy in optimal-isovalent-doped superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2

We use neutron polarization analysis to study spin excitation anisotropy in the optimal-isovalent-doped superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 (Tc = 30 K). Different from optimally hole and electron-doped BaFe2As2, where there is a clear spin excitation anisotropy in the paramagnetic tetragonal state well above Tc, we find no spin excitation anisotropy for energies above 2 meV in the normal state of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2. Upon entering the superconducting state, significant spin excitation anisotropy develops at the antiferromagnetic (AF) zone center QAF = (1, 0, L = odd), while magnetic spectrum is isotropy at the zone boundary Q = (1, 0, L = even). By comparing temperature, wave vector, and polarization dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 and hole-doped Ba0.67K0.33Fe2As2 (Tc = 38 K), we conclude that such anisotropy arises from spin-orbit coupling and is associated with the nearby AF order and superconductivity.

Unified phase diagram for iron-based superconductors

High-temperature superconductivity is closely adjacent to a long-range antiferromagnet, which is called a parent compound. In cuprates, all parent compounds are alike and carrier doping leads to superconductivity, so a unified phase diagram can be drawn. However, the properties of parent compounds for iron-based superconductors show significant diversity and both carrier and isovalent dopings can cause superconductivity, which casts doubt on the idea that there exists a unified phase diagram for them. Here we show that the ordered moments in a variety of iron pnictides are inversely proportional to the effective Curie constants of their nematic susceptibility. This unexpected scaling behavior suggests that the magnetic ground states of iron pnictides can be achieved by tuning the strength of nematic fluctuations. Therefore, a unified phase diagram can be established where superconductivity emerges from a hypothetical parent compound with a large ordered moment but weak nematic fluctuations, which suggests that iron-based superconductors are strongly correlated electron systems.

Nature of the Antiferromagnetic and Nematic Transitions in Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Fe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$

We have systematically studied the antiferromagnetic and nematic transitions in Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Fe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$ by magnetic susceptibility and uniaxial-pressure resistivity measurements, respectively. The derivatives of the temperature dependence of both magnetic and nematic susceptibilities show clearly sharp peak when the transitions are first-order. Accordingly, we show that while both of the magnetic and nematic transitions change from first-order to second-order with increasing Barium doping level, there is a narrow doping range where the former becomes second-order but the latter remains first-order, which has never been realized before in other systems. Moreover, the antiferromagnetic and nematic transition temperatures become different and the jump of nematic susceptibility becomes small in this intermediate doping range. Our results provide key information on the interplay between magnetic and nematic transitions. Concerning the current debate on the microscopic models for nematicity in iron-based superconductors, these observations agree with the magnetic scenario for an itinerant fermionic model in excellent details.

Two-dimensional Massless Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic AFe2As2 (A = Ba, Sr)

We report infrared studies of AFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (A = Ba, Sr), two representative parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, at magnetic fields (B) up to 17.5 T. Optical transitions between Landau levels (LLs) were observed in the antiferromagnetic states of these two parent compounds. Our observation of a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence of the LL transition energies, the zero-energy intercepts at B = 0 T under the linear extrapolations of the transition energies and the energy ratio ($\sim$ 2.4) between the observed LL transitions, combined with the linear band dispersions in two-dimensional (2D) momentum space obtained by theoretical calculations, demonstrates the existence of massless Dirac fermions in antiferromagnetic BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. More importantly, the observed dominance of the zeroth-LL-related absorption features and the calculated bands with extremely weak dispersions along the momentum direction $k_{z}$ indicate that massless Dirac fermions in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ are 2D. Furthermore, we find that the total substitution of the barium atoms in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ by strontium atoms not only maintains 2D massless Dirac fermions in this system, but also enhances their Fermi velocity, which supports that the Dirac points in iron-arsenide parent compounds are topologically protected.

Quasi-2D behavior of 112-type iron-based superconductors

Fluctuation magnetoconductivity and magnetization above the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) are measured on the recently discovered 112 family of iron-based superconductors (IBS), Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_{1-y}$Ni$_y$As$_2$, which presents an extra As-As chain spacer-layer. The analysis in terms of a generalization of the Lawrence-Doniach (LD) approach to finite applied magnetic fields indicates that these compounds are among the most anisotropic IBS ($γ$ up to ~30), and provides a compelling evidence of a quasi-two-dimensional behavior for doping levels near the optimal one.

Multigap superconductivity in ThAsFeN investigated using muSR measurements

We have investigated the superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor ThFeAsN with a tetragonal layered crystal structure using resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Our resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal an onset of bulk superconductivity with $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 30 K. The heat capacity results show a very small anomaly, $Δ$C$_{ele}$$\sim$0.214 (J/mol-K) at $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 30 K and exhibits exponential behavior below $T_{\bf c}$, which fits better to two superconducting gaps rather than a single gap. Further a nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$(H) has been found in the low temperature limit, which indicates that the smaller energy gap is nodal. Our analysis of the TF-$μ$SR results shows that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is better described by a two-gap model either isotropic $s$+$s$-wave or $s$+$d$-wave than a single gap isotropic $s$-wave model for the superconducting gap, consistent with other Fe-based superconductors. The combine $γ$(H) and TF-$μ$SR results confirm $s$+$d$-wave model for the gap structure of ThFeAsN. The observation of two gaps in ThFeAsN suggests multiband nature of the superconductivity possibly arising from the d-bands of Fe ions. Furthermore, from our TF-$μ$SR study we have estimated the magnetic penetration depth, in the polycrystalline sample, of $λ_{\mathrm{L}}$$(0)$ = 375 nm, superconducting carrier density $n_s = 4.6 \times 10^{27}~ $m$^{-3}$, and carrier's effective-mass $m^*$ = 2.205\textit{m}$_{e}$. We will compare the results of our present study with those reported for the Fe-pnictide family of superconductors.

Crystal growth and phase diagram of 112-type iron pnictide superconductor Ca1-yLayFe1-xNixAs2

We report a systematic crystal growth and characterization of Ca$_{1-y}$La$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$, the newly discovered 112-type iron-based superconductor. After substituting Fe by a small amount of Ni, bulk superconductivity is successfully obtained in high quality single crystals sized up to 6 mm. Resistivity measurements indicate common features for transport properties in this 112-type iron pnictide, suggest strong scattering from chemical dopants. Together with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, and the Neel temperature $T_N$ determined by the elastic neutron scattering, we sketch a three-dimensional phase diagram in the combination of both Ni and La dopings.

Neutron powder diffraction study on the iron-based nitride superconductor ThFeAsN

We report neutron diffraction and transport results on the newly discovered superconducting nitride ThFeAsN with $T_c=$ 30 K. No magnetic transition, but a weak structural distortion around 160 K, is observed cooling from 300 K to 6 K. Analysis on the resistivity, Hall transport and crystal structure suggests this material behaves as an electron optimally doped pnictide superconductors due to extra electrons from nitrogen deficiency or oxygen occupancy at the nitrogen site, which together with the low arsenic height may enhance the electron itinerancy and reduce the electron correlations, thus suppress the static magnetic order.

Nematic Quantum Critical Fluctuations in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$

We have systematically studied the nematic fluctuations in the electron-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ by measuring the in-plane resistance change under uniaxial pressure. While the nematic quantum critical point can be identified through the measurements along the (110) direction as studied previously, quantum and thermal critical fluctuations cannot be distinguished due to similar Curie-Weiss-like behaviors. Here we find that a sizable pressure-dependent resistivity along the (100) direction is present in all doping levels, which is against the simple picture of an Ising-type nematic model. The signal along the (100) direction becomes maximum at optimal doping, suggesting that it is associated with nematic quantum critical fluctuations. Our results indicate that thermal fluctuations from striped antiferromagnetic order dominate the underdoped regime along the (110) direction. We argue that either there is a strong coupling between the quantum critical fluctuations and the fermions, or more exotically, a higher symmetry may be present around optimal doping.

Spin excitations in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2superconductor

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study temperature and energy dependence of spin excitations in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 superconductor (Tc = 30 K) throughout the Brillouin zone. In the undoped state, spin waves and paramagnetic spin excitations of BaFe2As2 stem from antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector QAF= (1/-1,0) and peaks near zone boundary at (1/-1,1/-1) around 180 meV. Replacing 30% As by smaller P to induce superconductivity, low-energy spin excitations of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2form a resonance in the superconducting state and high-energy spin excitations now peaks around 220 meV near (1/-1,1/-1). These results are consistent with calculations from a combined density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, and suggest that the decreased average pnictogen height in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 reduces the strength of electron correlations and increases the effective bandwidth of magnetic excitations.

Effect of nematic order on the low-energy spin fluctuations in detwinned BaFe$_{1.935}$Ni$_{0.065}$As$_2$

The origin of nematic order remains one of the major debates in iron-based superconductors. In theories based on spin nematicity, one major prediction is that the spin-spin correlation length at (0,$π$) should decrease with decreasing temperature below the structural transition temperature $T_s$. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering studies on the low-energy spin fluctuations in BaFe$_{1.935}$Ni$_{0.065}$As$_2$ under uniaxial pressure. Both intensity and spin-spin correlation start to show anisotropic behavior at high temperature, while the reduction of the spin-spin correlation length at (0,$π$) happens just below $T_s$, suggesting strong effect of nematic order on low-energy spin fluctuations. Our results favor the idea that treats the spin degree of freedom as the driving force of the electronic nematic order.

Spin waves and magnetic exchange interactions in the spin ladder compound RbFe$_2$Se$_3$

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin ladder compound RbFe$_2$Se$_3$. The results reveal that the products, $SJ$'s, of the spin $S$ and the magnetic exchange interactions $J$'s along the antiferromagnetic (leg) direction and the ferromagnetic (rung) direction are comparable with those for the stripe ordered phase of the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors. The universality of the $SJ$'s implies nearly universal spin wave dynamics and the irrelevance of the fermiology for the existence of the stripe antiferromagnetic order among various Fe-based materials.

Electronic specific heat in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$

We have systematically studied the low-temperature specific heat of the BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ single crystals covering the whole superconducting dome. Using the nonsuperconducting heavily overdoped x = 0.3 sample as a reference for the phonon contribution to the specific heat, we find that the normal-state electronic specific heats in the superconducting samples may have a nonlinear temperature dependence, which challenges previous results in the electron-doped Ba-122 iron-based superconductors. A model based on the presence of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations may explain the data between x = 0.1 and x = 0.15, suggesting the important role of Fermi-surface topology in understanding the normal-state electronic states.

Impact of Uniaxial Pressure on Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in Electron-Doped Iron Pnictides

We use neutron resonance spin echo and Larmor diffraction to study the effect of uniaxial pressure on the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural ($T_s$) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions in iron pnictides BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0,0.03,0.12$), SrFe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$, and BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$. In antiferromagnetically ordered BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ and SrFe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$ with $T_N$ and $T_s$ ($T_N\leq T_s$), a uniaxial pressure necessary to detwin the sample also increases $T_N$, smears out the structural transition, and induces an orthorhombic lattice distortion at all temperatures. By comparing temperature and doping dependence of the pressure induced lattice parameter changes with the elastoresistance and nematic susceptibility obtained from transport and ultrasonic measurements, we conclude that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy found in the paramagnetic state of electron underdoped iron pnictides depends sensitively on the nature of the magnetic phase transition and a strong coupling between the uniaxial pressure induced lattice distortion and electronic nematic susceptibility.

Energy dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in uniaxial-strained BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature and energy dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in uniaxial-strained electron-doped iron pnictide BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ near optimal superconductivity ($T_c=20$ K). Our work has been motivated by the observation of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase of electron-underdoped iron pnictides under uniaxial pressure, which has been attributed to a spin-driven Ising-nematic state or orbital ordering. Here we show that the spin excitation anisotropy, a signature of the spin-driven Ising-nematic phase, exists for energies below $\sim$60 meV in uniaxial-strained BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$. Since this energy scale is considerably larger than the energy splitting of the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ bands of uniaxial-strained Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ near optimal superconductivity, spin Ising-nematic correlations is likely the driving force for the resistivity anisotropy and associated electronic nematic correlations.

Electron-doping dependence of the anisotropic superconductivity in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_2$

The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) in superconducting BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_2$ single crystals has been determined by magnetotransport measurements down to 0.6 K over the whole superconducting dome with $0.065 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.22$, both for the inter-plane ($H \parallel c$, $H_{c2}^{c}$) and in-plane ($H \parallel ab$, $H_{c2}^{ab}$) field directions in static magnetic fields up to 16 T and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}^{ab}$ follows the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) model incorporating orbital and spin paramagnetic effects, while $H_{c2}^{c}(T)$ can only be described by the effective two-band model with unbalanced diffusivity. The anisotropy of the upper critical fields, $γ(T)=H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c}$ monotonically increases with increasing temperature for all dopings, and its zero-temperature limit, $γ(0)$, has an asymmetric doping dependence with a significant enhancement in the overdoped regime, where the optimally doped compound has the most isotropic superconductivity. Our results suggest that the anisotropy in the superconductivity of iron pnictides is determined by the topology of the Fermi surfaces together with the doping-induced impurity scattering.

Nematic magnetoelastic effect contrasted between Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ and FeSe

To elucidate the origin of nematic order in Fe-based superconductors, we report a Raman scattering study of lattice dynamics, which quantify the extent of $C_4$-symmetry breaking, in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and FeSe. FeSe possesses a nematic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{s}$ and orbital-related band-energy split below $T_\mathrm{s}$ that are similar to those in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, but unlike BaFe$_2$As$_2$ it has no long-range magnetic order. We find that the $E_g$ phonon-energy split in FeSe sets in only well below $T_\mathrm{s}$, and its saturated value is substantially smaller than that in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Together with reported results for the Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ family, the data suggest that magnetism exerts a major influence on the lattice.

Superconducting fluctuations in isovalently-substituted BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$: Possible observation of multiband effects

The nature of superconducting fluctuation effects in the isovalently-substituted iron pnictide BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ (x=0.35) is probed through measurements of the magnetization and magnetoconductivity around the superconducting transition. The results, obtained with magnetic fields up to 9 T applied in the two main crystal directions, are consistent with anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approaches for finite applied magnetic fields. The analysis allowed to determine with accuracy the out-of-plane, $ξ_c(0)$, and in-plane, $ξ_{ab}(0)$, GL coherence lengths. Significant differences are found between the $ξ_c(0)$ values resulting from electrical transport and magnetization data. According to recent theoretical approaches, these differences could be interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of this material. The analysis of data in the low field region around the transition temperature also suggests that phase fluctuations, although possibly relevant in other Fe-based superconductors, may play a negligible role in this compound.
