Anomalous Charge Density Wave State Evolution and Dome-like Superconductivity in CuIr2Te4-xSex Chalcogenides

We report the anomalous charge density wave (CDW) state evolution and dome-like superconductivity (SC) in CuIr2Te4-xSex series. Room temperature powder X ray-diffraction (PXRD) results indicate that CuIr2Te4-xSex compounds retain the same structure as the host CuIr2Te4 and the unit cell constants a and c manifest a linear decline with increasing Se content. Magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity results suggest that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exhibits a weak dome-like variation as substituting Te by Se with the maximum Tc = 2.83 K for x = 0.1 followed by suppression in Tc and simultaneous decrease of the superconducting volume fraction. Unexpectedly, the CDW-like transition (TCDW) is suppressed with lower Se doping but re-emerges at higher doping. Meanwhile, the temperature-dependent XRD measurements show that the trigonal structure is stable at 20 K, 100 K and 300 K for the host sample and the doping composition with x = 0.5, thus we propose that the behaviour CDW-like transition arises from the disorder effect created by chemical doping and is not related to structural transition. The lower and the upper critical fields of these compounds are also addressed.

Observation of orbital order in the Van der Waals material 1T-TiSe2

Besides magnetic and charge order, regular arrangements of orbital occupation constitute a fundamental order parameter of condensed matter physics. Even though orbital order is difficult to identify directly in experiments, its presence was firmly established in a number of strongly correlated, three-dimensional Mott insulators. Here, reporting resonant X-ray scattering experiments on the layered Van der Waals compound $1T$-TiSe$_2$, we establish the emergence of orbital order in a weakly correlated, quasi-two-dimensional material. Our experimental scattering results are consistent with first-principles calculations that bring to the fore a generic mechanism of close interplay between charge redistribution, lattice displacements, and orbital order. It demonstrates the essential role that orbital degrees of freedom play in TiSe$_2$, and their importance throughout the family of correlated Van der Waals materials.

Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave of CuIr2Te4 by Iodine Doping

Here we report a systematic investigation on the evolution of the structural and physical properties, including the charge density wave and superconductivity of the polycrystalline CuIr2Te4-xIx. X-ray diffraction results indicate that both of a and c lattice parameters increase linearly. The resistivity measurements indicate that the charge density wave is destabilized with slight x but reappears when x is large than 0.9. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature enhances as x raises and reaches a maximum value of around 2.95 K for the optimal composition CuIr2Te3.9I0.1 followed by a slight decrease with higher iodine doping content. The specific heat jump for the optimal composition CuIr2Te3.9I0.1 is approximately 1.46, which is close to the Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer value which is 1.43, indicating it is a bulk superconductor. The results of thermodynamic heat capacity measurements under different magnetic fields, magnetization and magneto-transport measurements further suggest that CuIr2Te4-xIx bulks are type II superconductors. Finally, an electronic phase diagram for this CuIr2Te4-xIx system has been constructed. The present study provides a suitable material platform for further investigation of the interplay of the CDW and superconductivity.

Influence of Ln elements (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) on the structure and oxygen permeability of Ca-containing dual-phase membranes

Developing good performance and low-cost oxygen permeable membranes for CO2 capture based on the oxy-fuel concept is greatly desirable but challenging. Despite tremendous efforts in exploring new CO2-stable dual-phase membranes, its presence is however still far from meeting the industrial requirements. Here we report a series of new Ca-containing CO2-resistant oxygen transporting membranes with composition 60wt.%Ce0.9Ln0.1O2-40wt.%Ln0.6Ca0.4FeO3(CLnO-LnCFO; Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) synthesized via a Pechini one-pot method. Our results indicate all investigated compounds are composed of perovskite and fluorite phases, while the perovskite phases in the CNO-NCFO and CSO-SCFO membranes after sintering generates Ca-rich and Ca-less two kinds of grains with different morphologies, where the Ca-less small perovskite grains block the transport of oxygen ions and eventually result in poor oxygen permeability. Among our investigated CLnO-LnCFO membranes, CPO-PCFO exhibits the highest oxygen permeability and excellent CO2 stability, which were mainly associated with the improvement in crystal symmetry, non-negligible electronic conductivity of fluorite phase and the enhancement in electronic conductivity of perovskite. Our results establish Ca-containing oxides as candidate material platforms for membrane engineering devices that combine CO2 capture and oxygen separation.

Charge density wave and superconductivity in the family of telluride chalcogenides Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4

The interplay between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW)/metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) has long been interested and studied in condensed matter physics. Here we study systematically the charge density wave and superconductivity properties in the solid solutions Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements indicate that the CDW state was suppressed immediately while the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) differs from each system. In the Al- and Ti-substitution cases, Tc increase as y increases and reaches a maximum around 2.75 K and 2.84 K respectively at y = 0.075, followed by a decrease of Tc before the chemical phase boundary is reached at y = 0.2. Nevertheless, Tc decreases monotonously with Rh-doping content y increases and disappears above 0.3 with measuring temperature down to 2 K. Surprisingly, in the Zn1-xCuxIr2Te4 solid solution, Tc enhances as x increases and reaches a maximum value of 2.82 K for x = 0.5 but subsequently survives over the whole doping range of 0.00 - 0.9 despite Tc changes slightly with higher doping content, which differs from the observation of zinc doping suppressing the superconductivity quickly in the high Tc cuprate superconductors. The specific heat anomaly at the superconducting transitions for the representative optimal doping samples are all slightly higher than the BCS value of 1.43 and indicate bulk superconductivity in these compounds. Finally, the CDW transition temperature (TCDW) and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) vs. x/y content phase diagrams of Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4 have been established and compared, which offers good opportunity to study the competition between CDW and superconductivity in the telluride chalcogenides.

Concurrent probing of electron-lattice dephasing induced by photoexcitation in 1T-TaSeTe using ultrafast electron diffraction

It has been technically challenging to concurrently probe the electrons and the lattices in materials during non-equilibrium processes, allowing their correlations to be determined. Here, in a single set of ultrafast electron diffraction patterns taken on the charge-density-wave (CDW) material 1T-TaSeTe, we discover a temporal shift in the diffraction intensity measurements as a function of scattering angle. With the help of dynamic models and theoretical calculations, we show that the ultrafast electrons probe both the valence-electron and lattice dynamic processes, resulting in the temporal shift measurements. Our results demonstrate unambiguously that the CDW is not merely a result of the periodic lattice deformation ever-present in 1T-TaSeTe but has significant electronic origin. This method demonstrates a novel approach for studying many quantum effects that arise from electron-lattice dephasing in molecules and crystals for next-generation devices.

Superconductivity in the Ru-Doped CuIr2Te4 Telluride Chalcogenide

Here we report the effect of structural and superconductivity properties on Ru doped CuIr2Te4 telluride chalcogenide. XRD results suggest that the CuIr2-xRuxTe4 maintain the disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164) for x less than 0.3. The lattice constants, a and c, both decrease with increasing Ru content. Temperature-dependent resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements are performed to characterize the superconducting properties systematically. Our results suggest that the optimal doping level for superconductivity in CuIr2-xRuxTe4 is x = 0.05, where Tc is 2.79 K with the Sommerfeld constant gamma of 11.52 mJ mol-1 K-2 and the specific-heat anomaly at the superconducting transition, is approximately 1.51, which is higher than the BCS value of 1.43, indicating CuIr1.95Ru0.05Te4 is a strongly electron-phonon coupled superconductor. The values of lower critical filed and upper critical field calculated from isothermal magnetization and magneto-transport measurements are 0.98 KOe and 2.47 KOe respectively, signifying that the compound is clearly a type-II superconductor. Finally, a dome-like shape superconducting Tcs vs. x content phase diagram is established, where the charge density wave disappears at x = 0.03 while superconducting transition temperature (Tc) rises until it reaches its peak at x = 0.05, then, with decreasing when x reaches 0.3. This feature of the competition between CDW and the superconductivity could be caused by tuning the Fermi surface and density of states with Ru chemical doping.

CuIr2Te4: A Quasi-Two-Dimensional Ternary Telluride Chalcogenide Superconductor

Here we report the first observation of superconductivity in the AB2X4-type ternary telluride CuIr2Te4, which is synthesized by a solid-state method in an evacuated quartz jacket. It adopts a disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164), which embodies a two-dimensional IrTe2 layers and intercalated by Cu between the layers. We use a combination of experimental and first principles calculation analysis to look insight into the structural and physical properties. CuIr2Te4 consistently exhibited a bulk superconductivity transition at 2.5 K in electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Resistivity and magnetization measurements suggest a charge density wave transition (TCDW = 250 K) coexists in CuIr2Te4, which further signify the coexistence of superconductivity and CDW in the ternary telluride chalcogenide CuIr2Te4. Our discovery of the new CDW-bearing superconductor CuIr2Te4 opens a door for experimental and theoretical studies of the interplay between CDW and superconductivity quantum state in the condensed matter field.

High CO2-tolerance oxygen permeation dual-phase membranes Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Al0.2O3-δ

High stability and oxygen permeability are two prominent requirements for the oxygen transport membrane candidates used as industrialization. Herein, we report several composite membranes based on xwt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2(CPO)-(100-x)wt.%Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Al0.2O3(PSFAO) (x = 50, 60 and 75) prepared via a modified Pechini method. Oxygen permeability test reveals that the 60CPO-40PSFAO composition exhibits the highest oxygen permeability. The oxygen permeation flux through the optimal uncoated 0.33 mm-thickness 60CPO-40PSFAO composite can reach 1.03 mL cm-2 min-1 (over the general requirement value of 1 mL cm-2 min-1) in air/He atmosphere at 1000 °C. In situ XRD performance confirms the optimal 60CPO-40PSFAO sample shows excellent stability in CO2-containing atmospheres. The 60CPO-40PSFAO membrane still exhibits simultaneously excellent oxygen permeability and phase stability after operating for over 100 h at air/CO2 condition at 1000 °C, which further indicates that the 60CPO-40PSFAO composite is likely to be used for oxygen supply in CO2 capture

NbSeTe -A New Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Superconductor

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) usually exhibit layered polytypic structures due to the weak interlayer coupling. 2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely studied in the pristine TMDC family due to its high superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 7.3K) and the occurrence of a charge-density wave (CDW) order below 33 K. The coexistence of CDW with superconductivity poses an intriguing open question about the relationship between Fermi surface nesting and Cooper pairing. Past studies of this issue have mostly been focused on doping 2H-NbSe2 by 3d transition metals without significantly changing its crystal structure. Here we replaced the Se by Te in 2H-NbSe2 in order to design a new 1T polytype layered TMDC NbSeTe, which adopts a trigonal structure with space group P-3m1. We successfully grew large size and high-quality single crystals of 1T-NbSeTe via the vapor transport method using I2 as the transport agent. Temperature-dependent resistivity and specific heat data revealed a bulk Tc at 1.3 K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in pure 1T-NbSeTe phase. This compound enlarged the family of superconducting TMDCs and provides an opportunity to study the interplay between CDW and superconductivity in the trigonal structure.

High-flux dual-phase percolation membrane for oxygen separation

A series of composites based on (100-x)wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-xwt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ (x = 25, 40 and 50) doped with the cheap and abundant alkaline earth metal Ca2+ at the A-site has been successfully designed and fabricated. The crystal structure, oxygen permeability, phase and CO2 stability were evaluated. The composition of 60wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ(60CPO-40PCFO) possesses the highest oxygen permeability among three studied composites. At 1000 oC, the oxygen permeation fluxes through the 0.3 mm-thickness 60CPO-40PCFO membranes after porous La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ each to 1.00 mL cm-2 min-1 and 0.62 mL cm-2 min-1 under air/He and air/CO2 gradients, respectively. In situ XRD results demonstrated that the 60CPO-40PCFO sample displayed a perfect structural stability in air as well as CO2-containing atmosphere. Thus, low-cost, Co-free and Sr-free 60CPO-40PCFO has high CO2 stability and is economical and environmental friendly since the expensive and volatile element Co was replaced by Fe and Sr was waived since it easily forms carbonates.

Effects of Al content on the oxygen permeability through dual-phase membrane 60Ce$_{0.9}$Pr$_{0.1}$O$_{2-δ}$-40Pr$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$Fe$_{1-x}$Al$_x$O$_{3-δ}$

Ceramic dual-phase oxygen transport membranes with the composition of 60wt.% Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe1-xAlxO3-δ (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) (60CPO-40PSF1-xAxO) based on 60Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ doped Al was successfully synthesized through a modified Pechini method. Crystal structure, surface microtopography and oxygen permeability are investigated systematically. The cell parameters of perovskite phase first increased and then decreased with the increase of Al content, which is related to the radius of the Al3+ and the formation of impurity phase. As x ranges from 0.1 to 0.8, the oxygen permeability of the materials first increases and then decreases, and the maximum value of oxygen permeation rate for 60CPO-40PSF1-xAxO membranes with 0.4mm thickness at 1000 °C is 1.12 mL min-1 cm-2 when x = 0.4. XRD measurements revealed high temperature stability and CO2-tolerant property of the dual-phase composites. The partial replacement of Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{4+}$ by Al$^{3+}$ causes the material not only to exhibit good stability, but also to increase the oxygen permeability of the membranes.

The Unusual Suppression of Superconducting Transition Temperature in Double-Doping 2H-NbSe$_2$

2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely researched transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors, which undergoes charge-density wave (CDW) transition at TCDW about 33 K and superconducting transition at Tc of 7.3 K. To explore the relation between its superconductivity and Fermi surface nesting, we combined S substitution with Cu intercalation in 2H-NbSe2 to make CuxNbSe2-ySy. Upon systematic substitution of S and intercalation of Cu ions into 2H-NbSe2, we found that when the Cu and S contents increases, the Tc decreases in CuxNbSe2-ySy. While at higher x and y values, Tc keeps a constant value near 2 K, which is not commonly observed for a layered TMD. For comparison, we found the simultaneous substitution of Nb by Cu and Se by S in CuxNb1-xSe2-ySy lowered the Tc substantially faster. We construct a superconducting phase diagrams for our double-doping compounds in contrast with the related single-ions doping systems.

Ultrafast decoupling of atomic sublattices in a charge-density-wave material

Atomic rearrangements within crystals lie at the foundation of electron-phonon-coupled phenomena such as metal-insulator transition and superconductivity. Advanced laser-pump-probe studies have recently focused on various charge-density-wave (CDW) materials to sharpen our understanding of the charge-lattice entanglement, where non-thermal melting of the CDW state is evident from the enhanced Bragg diffraction peak intensities - attributed to the dominance of the metal-atom dynamics over the nonmetal-anion one. Here using ultrafast MeV electron diffraction on the prototypical CDW material 1T-TaSeTe, we observe an unusual coexistence of systematically enhanced and suppressed Bragg peak intensities upon the CDW suppression, indicating a dominance of nonmetal-anion dynamics during photoexcitation. By tracking these atomic trajectories quantitatively through the ultrafast process, we identify a transient state that manifests itself as an unexpected decoupling of the Ta and Se/Te sublattices. These findings unambiguously unveil a new kind of laser manipulations of lattice order parameters, which has potentials in creating new quantum states and discerning hidden phases such as intra-unit-cell orders.

S-shaped suppression of the superconducting transition temperature in Cu-intercalated NbSe2

2H-NbSe2 is the prototype and most frequently studied of the well-known transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) superconductors. Widely acknowledged to be a conventional superconductor, its transition temperature to the superconducting state (Tc) is 7.3 K - a Tc that is substantially higher than those seen for the majority of TMDCs, where Tcs between 2 and 4 K are the norm. Here we report the intercalation of Cu into 2H-NbSe2 to make CuxNbSe2. As is typically found when chemically altering an optimal superconductor, Tc decreases with increasing x, but the way that Tc is suppressed in this case is unusual - an S-shaped character is observed, with an inflection point near x = 0.03 and, at higher x, a leveling off of the Tc near 3 K - down to the usual value for a layered TMDC. Electronic characterization reveals corresponding S-like behavior for many of the materials parameters that influence Tc. To illustrate its character, the superconducting phase diagram for CuxNbSe2 is contrasted to those of FexNbSe2 and NbSe2-xSx.

Differences in chemical doping matter - Superconductivity in Ti1-xTaxSe2 but not in Ti1-xNbxSe2

We report that 1T-TiSe2, an archetypical layered transition metal dichalcogenide, becomes superconducting when Ta is substituted for Ti but not when Nb is substituted for Ti. This is unexpected because Nb and Ta should be chemically equivalent electron donors. Superconductivity emerges near x = 0.02 for Ti1-xTaxSe2, while for Ti1-xNbxSe2, no superconducting transitions are observed above 0.4 K. The equivalent chemical nature of the dopants is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. ARPES and Raman scattering studies show similarities and differences between the two systems, but the fundamental reasons why the Nb and Ta dopants yield such different behavior are unknown. We present a comparison of the electronic phase diagrams of many electron-doped 1T-TiSe2 systems, showing that they behave quite differently, which may have broad implications in the search for new superconductors. We propose that superconducting Ti0.8Ta0.2Se2 will be suitable for devices and other studies based on exfoliated crystal flakes.

Superconductivity in a misfit phase combining a topological crystalline insulator and a layered transition metal dichalcogenide

We report the characterization of the misfit compound (Pb1-xSnxSe2)1.16(TiSe2)2, in which a [100] rocksalt bilayer of Pb1-xSnxSe, which is a topological crystalline insulator in bulk form, alternates with a double layer of the normally non-superconducting layered transition metal dichalcogenide TiSe2. The x dependence of Tc displays a weak dome-like shape with a maximum Tc of 4.5 K at x = 0.2; there is only a subtle change in Tc corresponding to the expected trivial to topological transition in the Pb1-xSnxSe bi-layer. We present a more detailed characterization of the superconductor at x = 0.4, for which the bulk Pb1-xSnxSe phase is in the topological crystalline insulator regime. For this material, the Sommerfeld parameter gamma =11.06 mJ mol-1 K-2, the Debye temperature delta D = 161 K, the normalized specific heat jump value delta C/ gamma Tc = 1.38 and the electron-phonon constant value lambda ep = 0.72, suggesting that (Pb0.6Sn0.4Se)1.16(TiSe2)2 is a BCS-type weak coupling superconductor. This material is of interest for probing the interaction of superconductivity with the surface states of a topological crystalline insulator.

Superconductivity in Hf$_5$Sb$_3$$_-$$_x$Ru$_x$: Are Ru and Sb a critical charge-transfer pair for superconductivity?

We address the hypothesis that in intermetallic compounds, contrary to a long-standing view that considers electron count and crystal structure type as the only significant chemical criteria for the occurrence of superconductivity, consideration of the actual elements present is a third equally important factor. The importance of chemical identity may seem obvious, especially to chemists, but it has not previously been explicitly tested for intermetallic superconductors. Here we test the hypothesis by searching for and finding a new superconductor in the tetragonal symmetry Hf5Sb3-xMx solid solution. This phase is ideal for this study, because M can be many 3d, 4d and 5d transition metals in an M-Sb chain and is a minor elemental constituent. We find superconductivity for M = Ru only. This is the case even when the electron count can be adjusted to the same value with a different transition element within the same structure type. This leads us to propose that, like Cu-O (cuprate superconductors) and Fe-As (iron-pnictide superconductors) in different classes of compounds, Ru and Sb may be a critical element pair for superconductivity in intermetallic phases.
