Late-Time Cosmic Acceleration from QCD Confinement Dynamics

We explore a phenomenological extension of the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model by introducing a curvature-sensitive effective contribution to the Polyakov loop potential, motivated by the hypothesis that the non-perturbative QCD vacuum in the confined phase may retain a residual sensitivity to cosmic expansion. In a spatially flat FLRW background, this modification reduces to a term proportional to $α(H/H_0)^d f(Φ, Φ^*)$, which naturally vanishes in the deconfined regime and behaves as an effective dynamical vacuum component at late times, without invoking a fundamental cosmological constant. The construction provides an effective thermodynamic description of the QCD sector within an adiabatic framework and introduces a minimal phenomenological extension characterized by the exponent $d$ and the amplitude parameter $α$. We analyze the cosmological implications at the background level and confront the model with low-redshift observations, including cosmic chronometers, Type Ia supernovae, HII galaxies, and quasars. Using Bayesian Monte Carlo techniques, we constrain the model parameters and compare its performance with $Λ$CDM. Our results indicate that the modified PNJL cosmology provides a statistically competitive fit to current data while allowing small departures from $Λ$CDM within observational uncertainties. We also investigate the impact of the coupling on the QCD phase diagram and the critical end point. The framework offers a tractable effective approach to connect confinement physics with late-time cosmology and suggests directions for further theoretical development in QCD under curved backgrounds.

Advancing the Landscape of Multimessenger Science in the Next Decade

The last decade has brought about a profound transformation in multimessenger science. Ten years ago, facilities had been built or were under construction that would eventually discover the nature of objects in our universe could be detected through multiple messengers. Nonetheless, multimessenger science was hardly more than a dream. The rewards for our foresight were finally realized through IceCube's discovery of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux, the first observation of gravitational waves by LIGO, and the first joint detections in gravitational waves and photons and in neutrinos and photons. Today we live in the dawn of the multimessenger era. The successes of the multimessenger campaigns of the last decade have pushed multimessenger science to the forefront of priority science areas in both the particle physics and the astrophysics communities. Multimessenger science provides new methods of testing fundamental theories about the nature of matter and energy, particularly in conditions that are not reproducible on Earth. This white paper will present the science and facilities that will provide opportunities for the particle physics community renew its commitment and maintain its leadership in multimessenger science.

Improved limits on Lorentz invariance violation from astrophysical gamma-ray sources

Lorentz invariance (LI) has a central role in science and its violation (LIV) at some high-energy scale has been related to possible solutions for several of the most intriguing puzzles in nature such as dark matter, dark energy, cosmic rays generation in extreme astrophysical objects and quantum gravity. We report on a search for LIV signal based on the propagation of gamma rays from astrophysical sources to Earth. An innovative data analysis is presented which allowed us to extract unprecedented information from the most updated data set composed of 111 energy spectra of 38 different sources measured by current gamma-ray observatories. No LIV signal was found, and we show that the data are best described by LI assumption. We derived limits for the LIV energy scale at least 3 times better than the ones currently available in the literature for subluminal signatures of LIV in high-energy gamma rays.

The optical depth including Lorentz invariance violation energy threshold shifts

Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) introduced as a generic modification to particle dispersion relations can change the photon energy threshold of pair-production, which modifies the expected gamma-ray flux from astrophysical sources. In this work, we review this phenomenon and explore its consequences through the derived effects in the optical depth. Then, by looking for subluminal LIV signatures in TeV gamma-ray spectra, we present stringent limits to the LIV energy scale at leading order n=1 and 2. And finally, we present the predicted flux of GZK-photons including LIV, in the astrophysical scenario which best describes UHECR data.

Limits on the Lorentz Invariance Violation from UHECR astrophysics

In this paper, Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) is introduced in the calculations of photon propagation in the Universe. LIV is considered in the photon sector and the mean free path of the $γγ\rightarrow e^{+} e^{-}$ interaction is calculated. The corresponding photon horizon including LIV effects is used to predict major changes in the propagation of photons with energy above $10^{18}$ eV. The flux of GZK photons on Earth considering LIV is calculated for several source models of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR). The predicted flux of GZK gamma-rays is compared to the new upper limits on the photon flux obtained by the Pierre Auger Observatory in order to impose upper limits on the LIV coefficients of order $n =$ 0, 1 and 2. The limits on the LIV coefficients derived here are more realistic than previous works and in some cases more restrictive. The analysis resulted in LIV upper limits in the photon sector of $δ_{γ,0}^{limit} \sim -10^{-20}$, $δ_{γ,1}^{limit} \sim -10^{-38} \; \mathrm{eV^{-1}}$ and $δ_{γ,2}^{limit} \sim -10^{-56} \; \mathrm{eV^{-2}}$ in the astrophysical scenario which best describes UHECR data.
