$p$-Fourier algebras on compact groups

Let $G$ be a compact group. For $1\leq p\leq\infty$ we introduce a class of Banach function algebras $\mathrm{A}^p(G)$ on $G$ which are the Fourier algebras in the case $p=1$, and for $p=2$ are certain algebras discovered in \cite{forrestss1}. In the case $p\not=2$ we find that $\mathrm{A}^p(G)\cong \mathrm{A}^p(H)$ if and only if $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic compact groups. These algebras admit natural operator space structures, and also weighted versions, which we call $p$-Beurling-Fourier algebras. We study various amenability and operator amenability properties, Arens regularity and representability as operator algebras. For a connected Lie $G$ and $p>1$, our techniques of estimation of when certain $p$-Beurling-Fourier algebras are operator algebras rely more on the fine structure of $G$, than in the case $p=1$. We also study restrictions to subgroups. In the case that $G=SU(2)$, restrict to a torus and obtain some exotic algebras of Laurent series. We study amenability properties of these new algebras, as well.

Some Beurling-Fourier algebras on compact groups are operator algebras

Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. The question of when a weighted Fourier algebra on $G$ is completely isomorphic to an operator algebra will be investigated in this paper. We will demonstrate that the dimension of the group plays an important role in the question. More precisely, we will get a positive answer to the question when we consider a polynomial type weight coming from a length function on $G$ with the order of growth strictly bigger than the half of the dimension of the group. The case of SU(n) will be examined, focusing more on the details including negative results. The proof for the positive directions depends on a non-commutative version of Littlewood multiplier theory, which we will develop in this paper, and the negative directions will be taken care of by restricting to a maximal torus.

Operator biflatness of the $L^1$-algebras of compact quantum groups

We prove that the $L^1$-algebra of any non-Kac type compact quantum group does not satisfy operator biflatness. Since operator amenability implies operator biflatness, this result shows that any co-amenable, non-Kac type compact quantum group gives a counter example to the conjecture that $L^1(\Gb)$ is operator amenable if and only if $\Gb$ is amenable and co-amenable for any locally compact quantum group $\Gb$. The result also implies that the $L^1$-algebra of a locally compact quantum group is operator biprojective if and only if $\Gb$ is compact and of Kac type.

Asymptotic Spectral Distributions of Distance $k$-Graphs of Cartesian Product Graphs

Let $G$ be a finite connected graph on two or more vertices and $G^{[N,k]}$ the distance $k$-graph of the $N$-fold Cartesian power of $G$. For a fixed $k\ge1$, we obtain explicitly the large $N$ limit of the spectral distribution (the eigenvalue distribution of the adjacency matrix) of $G^{[N,k]}$. The limit distribution is described in terms of the Hermite polynomials. The proof is based on asymptotic combinatorics along with quantum probability theory.

Some weighted group algebras are operator algebras

Let $G$ be a finitely generated group with polynomial growth, and let $\om$ be a weight, i.e. a sub-multiplicative function on $G$ with positive values. We study when the weighted group algebra $\ell^1(G,\om)$ is isomorphic to an operator algebra. We show that $\ell^1(G,\om)$ is isomorphic to an operator algebra if $\om$ is a polynomial weight with large enough degree or an exponential weight of order $0<α<1$. We will demonstrate the order of growth of $G$ plays an important role in this question. Moreover, the algebraic centre of $\ell^1(G,\om)$ is isomorphic to a $Q$-algebra and hence satisfies a multi-variable von Neumann inequality. We also present a more detailed study of our results when $G$ is the $d$-dimensional integers $\Z^d$ and 3-dimensional discrete Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_3(\Z)$. The case of the free group with two generators will be considered as a counter example of groups with exponential growth.

Dimensions of components of tensor products of the linear groups representations with applications to Beurling-Fourier algebras

We give universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of isotypic components of a tensor product of the linear group GL(n) representations and universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of irreducible components of a tensor product of the special linear group SL(n) representations. This problem is motivated by harmonic analysis problems, and we give some applications of this result in the theory of Beurling-Fourier algebras.

Finite dimensional subspaces of noncommutative $L_p$ spaces

We prove the following noncommutative version of Lewis's classical result. Every n-dimensional subspace E of Lp(M) (1 Lp(M)$ onto E with $\norm{P}_{cb} \leq c_p n^{\abs{1/2-1/p}}.$ We follow the classical change of density argument with appropriate noncommutative variations in addition to the opposite trick.

Projectivity of modules over Fourier algebras

In this paper we will study the homological properties of various natural modules associated to the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. In particular, we will focus on the question of identifying when such modules will be projective in the category of operator spaces. We will show that projectivity often implies that the underlying group is discrete and give evidence to show that amenability also plays an important role.

Beurling-Fourier algebras, operator amenability and Arens regularity

We introduce the class of Beurling-Fourier algebras on locally compact groups and show that they are non-commutative analogs of classical Beurling algebras. We obtain various results with regard to the operator amenability, operator weak amenability and Arens regularity of Beurling-Fourier algebras on compact groups and show that they behave very similarly to the classical Beurling algebras of discrete groups. We then apply our results to study explicitly the Beurling-Fourier algebras on SU(2), the 2 $\times$ 2 unitary group. We demonstrate that how Beurling-Fourier algebras are closely connected to the amenability of the Fourier algebra of SU(2). Another major consequence of our results is that our investigation allows us to construct families of unital infinite-dimensional closed Arens regular subalgebras of the Fourier algebra of certain products of SU(2).

Hypercontractivity on the $q$-Araki-Woods algebras

Extending a work of Carlen and Lieb, Biane has obtained the optimal hypercontractivity of the $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on the $q$-deformation of the free group algebra. In this note, we look for an extension of this result to the type III situation, that is for the $q$-Araki-Woods algebras. We show that hypercontractivity from $L^p$ to $L^2$ can occur if and only if the generator of the deformation is bounded.

Projectivity of modules over Segal algebras

In this paper we will study the projetivity of various natural modules associated to operator Segal algebras of the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. In particular, we will focus on the question of identifying when such modules will be projective in the category of operator spaces. Projectivity often implies that the underlying group is discrete or even finite. We will also look at the projectivity for modules of $A_{cb}(G)$, the closure of $A(G)$ in the space of its completely bounded mutipliers. Here we give an evidence to show that weak amenability of $G$ plays an important role.

$q$-Chaos

We consider the $L_p$ norm estimates for homogeneous polynomials of $q$-gaussian variables ($-1\leq q\leq 1$). When $-1<q<1$ the $L_p$ estimates for $1\leq p \leq 2$ are essentially the same as the free case ($q=0$), whilst the $L_p$ estimates for $2\leq p \leq \infty$ show a strong $q$-dependence. Moreover, the extremal cases $q = \pm 1$ produce decisively different formulae.

A Maurey type result for operator spaces

The little Grothendieck theorem for Banach spaces says that every bounded linear operator between $C(K)$ and $\ell_2$ is 2-summing. However, it is shown in \cite{J05} that the operator space analogue fails. Not every cb-map $v : \K \to OH$ is completely 2-summing. In this paper, we show an operator space analogue of Maurey's theorem : Every cb-map $v : \K \to OH$ is $(q,cb)$-summing for any $q>2$ and hence admits a factorization $\|v(x)\| \leq c(q) \|v\|_{cb} \|axb\|_q$ with $a,b$ in the unit ball of the Schatten class $S_{2q}$.

Tsirelson like operator spaces

We construct nontrivial examples of weak-$C_p$ ($1\leq p \leq \infty$) operator spaces with the local operator space structure very close to $C_p = [R, C]_{\frac{1}{p}}$. These examples are non-homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces, and their constructions are similar to that of 2-convexified Tsirelson's space by W. B. Johnson.

Weak type $(2,H)$ and weak cotype $(2,H)$ of operator spaces

Recently an operator space version of type and cotype, namely type $(p,H)$ and cotype $(q,H)$ of operator spaces for $1\leq p \leq 2\leq q \leq \infty$ and a subquadratic and homogeneous Hilbetian operator space $H$ were introduced and investigated by the author. In this paper we define weak type $(2,H)$ (resp. weak cotype $(2,H)$) of operator spaces, which lies strictly between type $(2,H)$ (resp. cotype $(2,H)$) and type $(p,H)$ for all $1\leq p <2$ (resp. cotype $(q,H)$ for all $2<q \leq \infty$). This is an analogue of weak type 2 and weak cotype 2 in the Banach space case, so we develop analogous equivalent formulations. We also consider weak-$H$ space, spaces with weak type $(2,H)$ and weak cotype $(2,H^*)$ simultaneously and establish corresponding equivalent formulations.

Type and cotype of operator spaces

We consider two operator space versions of type and cotype, namely $S_p$-type, $S_q$-cotype and type $(p,H)$, cotype $(q,H)$ for a homogeneous Hilbertian operator space $H$ and $1\leq p \leq 2 \leq q\leq \infty$, generalizing "$OH$-cotype 2" of G. Pisier. We compute type and cotype of some Hilbertian operator spaces and $L_p$ spaces, and we investigate the relationship between a homogeneous Hilbertian space $H$ and operator spaces with cotype $(2,H)$. As applications we consider operator space versions of generalized little Grothendieck's theorem and Maurey's extension theorem in terms of these new notions.

Unconditionality with respect to orthonormal systems in noncommutative $L_2$ spaces

Orthonormal systems in commutative $L_2$ spaces can be used to classify Banach spaces. When the system is complete and satisfies certain norm condition the unconditionality with respect to the system characterizes Hilbert spaces. As a noncommutative analogue we introduce the notion of unconditionality of operator spaces with respect to orthonormal systems in noncommutative $L_2$ spaces and show that the unconditionality characterizes operator Hilbert spaces when the system is complete and satisfy certain norm condition. The proof of the main result heavily depends on free probabilistic tools such as contraction principle for $*$-free Haar unitaries, comparision of averages with respect to $*$-free Haar unitaries and $*$-free circular elements and $K$-covexity, type 2 and cotype 2 with respect to $*$-free circular elements.
