Orders of commutators and Products of conjugacy classes in finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group, let $x \in G$, and let $p$ be a prime. We prove that the commutator $[x,g]$ is a $p$-element for every $g \in G$ if and only if $x$ is central modulo $\mathbf{O}_p(G)$, where $\mathbf{O}_p(G)$ denotes the largest normal $p$-subgroup of $G$. This result provides a common generalization of certain variants of both the Baer--Suzuki theorem and Glauberman's $\mathbf{Z}_p^*$-theorem. As an application, we show that if $K$ is a conjugacy class of $G$ such that $K^{-1}K = 1 \cup D \cup D^{-1}$ for some conjugacy class $D$ of $G$, then the subgroup generated by $K$ is solvable.

On the invariants of finite groups arising in a topological quantum field theory

In this paper, we investigate structural properties of finite groups that are detected by certain group invariants arising from Dijkgraaf--Witten theory, a topological quantum field theory, in one space and one time dimension. In this setting, each finite group $G$ determines a family of numerical invariants associated with closed orientable surfaces, expressed in terms of the degrees of the complex irreducible characters of $G$. These invariants can be viewed as natural extensions of the commuting probability $d(G)$, which measures the probability that two randomly chosen elements of $G$ commute and has been extensively studied in the literature. By analyzing these higher-genus analogues, we establish new quantitative criteria relating the values of these invariants to key structural features of finite groups, such as commutativity, nilpotency, supersolvability and solvability. Our results generalize several classical theorems concerning the commuting probability, thereby linking ideas from finite group theory and topological quantum field theory.

Groups with a conjugacy class that is the difference of two normal subgroups

We consider finite groups having a conjugacy class that is the difference of two normal subgroups. That is, suppose $G$ is a group and $M$ and $N$ are normal subgroups so that $N < M$, and suppose that there is an element $g \in G$ so that the conjugacy class of $g$ is $M \setminus N$. We find a character-theoretic characterization of this condition, and we determine some structural properties of groups with such a conjugacy class. If we add the condition that $M/N$ is the unique minimal normal subgroup of $G/N$, then we obtain a generalization of a result by S.M. Gagola.

Some generalizations of Camina pairs and orders of elements in cosets

In this paper, we investigate certain generalizations of Camina pairs. Let $H$ be a nontrivial proper subgroup of a finite group $G$. We first show that every nontrivial irreducible complex character of $H$ induces homogeneously to $G$ if and only if for every $x\in G\setminus H$, the element $x$ is conjugate to $xh$ for all $h\in H$. Furthermore we prove that if $xh$ is conjugate to either $x$ or $x^{-1}$ for all $h\in H$ and all $x\in G\setminus H$, then the normal closure $N$ of $H$ in $G$ also satisfies the same condition, and $N$ is nilpotent. Finally, we determine the structure of $H$ under the assumption that for every element $x\in G\setminus H$ of odd order, the coset $xH$ consists entirely of elements of odd order.

Sylow subgroups and the number of irreducible characters of degrees divisible by a prime $p$

Let $G$ be a finite group and $p$ a prime. We establish an upper bound for the derived length of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ in terms of the number of irreducible characters of $G$ whose degrees are divisible by $p$. We also prove that if $B$ is a $p$-block of a finite $p$-solvable group $G$ with defect group $D$, then the derived length of $D$ is at most one more than the number of ordinary irreducible characters of positive height in $B$.

Finite groups whose maximal subgroups have almost odd index

A recurring theme in finite group theory is understanding how the structure of a finite group is determined by the arithmetic properties of group invariants. There are results in the literature determining the structure of finite groups whose irreducible character degrees, conjugacy class sizes or indices of maximal subgroups are odd. These results have been extended to include those finite groups whose character degrees or conjugacy class sizes are not divisible by $4$. In this paper, we determine the structure of finite groups whose maximal subgroups have index not divisible by $4$. As a consequence, we obtain some new $2$-nilpotency criteria.

A characterization of some finite simple groups by their character codegrees

For a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $χ$ of $G$, the codegree of $χ$ is defined by $\textrm{cod}(χ)=|G:\textrm{ker}(χ)|/χ(1)$, where $\textrm{ker}(χ)$ is the kernel of $χ$. In this paper, we show that if $H$ is a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type or a projective special linear group and $G$ is any finite group such that the character codegree sets of $G$ and $H$ coincide, then $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic.

Huppert's Conjecture for finite simple exceptional groups of Lie type

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\textrm{cd}(G)$ be the set of all complex irreducible character degrees of $G.$ In this paper, we show that if $\textrm{cd}(G)=\textrm{cd}(H),$ where $H$ is a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type, then $G\cong H\times A,$ where $A$ is an abelian group. This completes the verification of Huppert's Conjecture for all finite simple exceptional groups of Lie type.

On common zeros of characters of finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\text{Irr}(G)$ denote the set of the irreducible complex characters of $G$. An element $g\in G$ is called a vanishing element of $G$ if there exists $χ\in\text{Irr}(G)$ such that $χ(g)=0$ (i.e., $g$ is a zero of $χ$) and, in this case, the conjugacy class $g^G$ of $g$ in $G$ is called a vanishing conjugacy class. In this paper we consider several problems concerning vanishing elements and vanishing conjugacy classes; in particular, we consider the problem of determining the least number of conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that every non-linear $χ\in\text{Irr}(G)$ vanishes on one of them. We also consider the related problem of determining the minimum number of non-linear irreducible characters of a group such that two of them have a common zero.

Extremely closed subgroups and a variant on Glauberman's $Z^*$-theorem

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. We say that $H$ is extremely closed in $G$ if $\langle H,H^g\rangle\cap N_G(H)=H$ for all $g\in G.$ In this paper, we determine the structure of finite groups with an extremely closed abelian $p$-subgroup for some prime $p$. In particular, we show that if $G$ contains such a subgroup $H$, then $G=N_G(H)O_{p'}(G).$ This is a variant on the celebrated Glauberman's $Z^*$-Theorem.

On the maximal overgroups of Sylow subgroups of finite groups

In this paper, we determine the finite groups with a Sylow $r$-subgroup contained in a unique maximal subgroup. The proof involves a reduction to almost simple groups, and our main theorem extends earlier work of Aschbacher in the special case $r=2$. Several applications are presented. This includes some new results on weakly subnormal subgroups of finite groups, which can be used to study variations of the Baer-Suzuki theorem.

Variations on the Thompson theorem

Thompson's theorem stated that a finite group $G$ is solvable if and only if every $2$-generated subgroup of $G$ is solvable. In this paper, we prove some new criteria for both solvability and nilpotency of a finite group using certain condition on $2$-generated subgroups. We show that a finite group $G$ is solvable if and only if for every pair of two elements $x$ and $y$ in $G$ of coprime prime power order, if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is solvable, then $\langle x,y^g\rangle$ is solvable for all $g\in G$. Similarly, a finite group $G$ is nilpotent if and only if for every pair of elements $x$ and $y$ in $G$ of coprime prime power order, if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is solvable, then $x$ and $y^g$ commute for some $g\in G.$ Some applications to graphs defined on groups are given.

Weakly subnormal subgroups and variations of the Baer-Suzuki theorem

A subgroup $R$ of a finite group $G$ is weakly subnormal in $G$ if $R$ is not subnormal in $G$ but it is subnormal in every proper overgroup of $R$ in $G$. In this paper, we first classify all finite groups $G$ which contains a weakly subnormal $p$-subgroup for some prime $p$. We then determine all finite groups containing a cyclic weakly subnormal $p$-subgroup. As applications, we prove a number of variations of the Baer-Suzuki theorem using the orders of certain group elements.

Proportions of vanishing elements in finite groups

In this paper, we study the proportion of vanishing elements of finite groups. We show that the proportion of vanishing elements of every finite non-abelian group is bounded below by $1/2$ and classify all finite groups whose proportions of vanishing elements attain this bound. For symmetric groups of degree at least $5$, we show that this bound is at least $2327/2520$ which is best possible.

Conjugacy classes of $p$-elements and normal $p$-complements

In this paper, we study the structure of finite groups with a large number of conjugacy classes of $p$-elements for some prime $p$. As consequences, we obtain some new criteria for the existence of normal $p$-complements in finite groups.

On the number of irreducible real-valued characters of a finite group

We prove that there exists an integer-valued function f on positive integers such that if a finite group G has at most k real-valued irreducible characters, then |G/Sol(G)| is at most f(k), where Sol(G) denotes the largest solvable normal subgroup of G. In the case k = 5, we further classify G/Sol(G). This partly answers a question of Iwasaki [15] on the relationship between the structure of a finite group and its number of real-valued irreducible characters.

2-Parts of real class sizes

We investigate the structure of finite groups whose non-central real class sizes have the same $2$-part. In particular, we prove that such groups are solvable and have $2$-length one. As a consequence, we show that a finite group is solvable if it has two real class sizes. This confirms a conjecture due to G. Navarro, L. Sanus and P. Tiep.
