Joint Multi-Period Fermi-LAT and LHAASO Constraints on Axion-Like Particles from Mrk 421 Using Profile Likelihood with Gaussian Copula Correlation

We propose a joint multi-epoch profile-likelihood analysis of axion-like particles (ALPs) using five sets of simultaneous Fermi-LAT and LHAASO observations of the TeV blazar Mrk 421. Photon-ALP oscillations are calculated self-consistently together with EBL absorption for two representative jet emission models: a two-zone hybrid model and a single-zone hadronic model. To account for weak correlations among different observational epochs, we introduce a Gaussian copula with a conservative correlation coefficient $\rho = 0.03$ and perform a global optimization of nuisance parameters under the no-ALP hypothesis before profiling the ALP parameters. In the low-mass regime relevant to CAST ($m_a \lesssim 1$ neV), we obtain a 95\% CL upper limit of $g_{a\gamma} = 7.46 \times 10^{-13}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$. Over the full mass range $0.1$--$500$ neV, the most conservative 95\% CL upper limits are $g_{a\gamma} < 6.50 \times 10^{-12}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ (two-zone) and $g_{a\gamma} < 7.34 \times 10^{-12}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ (single-zone). These constraints benefit from the broadband VHE coverage and long-term monitoring provided by LHAASO. The analysis framework developed here offers a statistically consistent approach for future ALP searches with multi-messenger gamma-ray data.

Variation of Tensor Force due to Nuclear Medium Effect

The enhancement of $J^π(T)$=3$^{+}$(0) state with isospin $T=0$ excited by the tensor force in the free $^{6}$Li nucleus has been observed, for the first time, relative to a shrinkable excitation in the $^{6}$Li cluster component inside its host nucleus. Comparatively, the excitation of $J^π(T)$=0$^{+}$(1) state with isospin $T=1$ for these two $^{6}$Li formations take on an approximately equal excitation strength. The mechanism of such tensor force effect was proposed due to the intensive nuclear medium role on isospin $T$=0 state.

Aspect of Clusters Correlation at Light Nuclei Excited State

The correlation of $αα$ was probed via measuring the transverse momentum $p_{T}$ and width $δp_{T}$ of one $α$, for the first time, which represents the spatial and dynamical essentialities of the initial coupling state in $^{8}$Be nucleus. The weighted interaction vertex of 3$α$ reflected by the magnitudes of their relative momentums and relative emission angles proves the isosceles triangle configuration for 3$α$ at the high excited energy analogous Hoyle states.

Multi-alpha Boson Gas state in Fusion Evaporation Reaction and Three-body Force

The experimental evidence for the $α$ Boson gas state in the $^{11}$C+$^{12}$C$\rightarrow$$^{23}$Mg$^{\ast}$ fusion evaporation reaction is presented. By measuring the $α$ emission spectrum with multiplicity 2 and 3, we provide insight into the existence of a three-body force among $α$ particles. The observed spectrum exhibited distinct tails corresponding to $α$ particles emitted in pairs and triplets consistent well with the model-calculations of AV18-UX and chiral effective field theory of NV2-3-la*, indicating the formation of $α$ clusters with three-body force in the Boson gas state.

Measurement of $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne reaction suggests CNO break-out in first stars

The origin of calcium production in the first stars (Pop III stars), which formed out of the primordial matter of the Big Bang, and their fates, remain most fascinating mysteries in astrophysics. Advanced nuclear burning and supernovae were thought to be the dominant source of the Ca production seen in all stars. Here we report on a qualitatively different path to Ca production through break-out from the "warm" carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle. We extend direct measurement of the $^{19}$F($p$, $γ$)$^{20}$Ne break-out reaction down to an unprecedentedly low energy point of 186 keV and discover a key resonance at 225 keV. In the domain of astrophysical interest, at around 0.1 giga kelvin, this thermonuclear $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne rate is up to a factor of 7.4 larger than the previous recommended rate. Our stellar models show a stronger break-out during stellar hydrogen burning than thought before, and may reveal the nature of Ca production in Pop III stars imprinted on the oldest known ultra-iron poor star, SMSS0313-6708. This result from the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the deepest laboratory in the world, offering an environment with extremely low cosmic-ray induced background, has far-reaching implications on our understanding of how the first stars evolve and die. Our rate showcases the impact that faint Pop III star supernovae can have on the nucleosynthesis observed in the oldest known stars and first galaxies, key mission targets of the James Webb Space Telescope.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Fabrication and cold test of prototype of spatially periodic radio frequency quadrupole focusing linac

A 325 MHz aluminum prototype of a spatially periodic rf quadrupole focusing linac was developed at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a promising candidate for the front end of a high-current linac. It consists of an alternating series of crossbar H-type drift tubes and rf quadrupole sections. Owing to its special geometry, cavity fabrication is a major hurdle for its engineering development and application. In this paper, we report the detailed mechanical design of this structure and describe its fabrication process, including machining, assembly, and inspection. The field distribution was measured by the bead-pull technique. The results show that the field errors of both the accelerating and focusing fields are within an acceptable range. A tuning scheme for this new structure is proposed and verified. The cold test process and results are presented in detail. The development of this prototype provides valuable guidance for the application of the spatially periodic rf quadrupole structure.

Cluster Dynamics Modeling of Niobium and Titanium Carbide Precipitates

Kinetics of niobium and titanium carbide precipitates in iron has been simulated with cluster dynamics. The simulations, carried out in austenite and ferrite for niobium carbides, respectively in austenite for titanium carbide, were analyzed for dependency on temperature, solute concentration, and initial cluster distribution. The results are presented for different temperatures and solute concentrations and compared to available experimental data. They show little impact of initial cluster distribution beyond a certain relaxation time and that highly dilute alloys with only monomers present a significantly different behavior than less dilute alloys or alloys with different initial cluster distribution.

Monitoring method for neutron flux for a spallation target in an accelerator driven sub-critical system

In this paper, we study a monitoring method for neutron flux for the spallation target used in an accelerator driven sub-critical (ADS) system, where a spallation target located vertically at the centre of a sub-critical core is bombarded vertically by high-energy protons from an accelerator. First, by considering the characteristics in the spatial variation of neutron flux from the spallation target, we propose a multi-point measurement technique, i.e. the spallation neutron flux should be measured at multiple vertical locations. To explain why the flux should be measured at multiple locations, we have studied neutron production from a tungsten target bombarded by a 250 MeV-proton beam with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results indicate that the neutron flux at the central location is up to three orders of magnitude higher than the flux at lower locations. Secondly, we have developed an effective technique in order to measure the spallation neutron flux with a fission chamber (FC), by establishing the relation between the fission rate measured by FC and the spallation neutron flux. Since this relation is linear for a FC, a constant calibration factor is used to derive the neutron flux from the measured fission rate. This calibration factor can be extracted from the energy spectra of spallation neutrons. Finally, we have evaluated the proposed calibration method for a FC in the environment of an ADS system. The results indicate that the proposed method functions very well.

Particle transfer and fusion cross-section for Super-heavy nuclei in dinuclear system

Within the dinuclear system (DNS) conception, instead of solving Fokker-Planck Equation (FPE) analytically, the Master equation is solved numerically to calculate the fusion probability of super-heavy nuclei, so that the harmonic oscillator approximation to the potential energy of the DNS is avoided. The relative motion concerning the energy, the angular momentum, and the fragment deformation relaxations is explicitly treated to couple with the diffusion process, so that the nucleon transition probabilities, which are derived microscopically, are time-dependent. Comparing with the analytical solution of FPE, our results preserve more dynamical effects. The calculated evaporation residue cross sections for one-neutron emission channel of Pb-based reactions are basically in agreement with the known experimental data within one order of magnitude.
