A polyhedral characterization of quasi-ordinary singularities

Given an irreducible hypersurface singularity of dimension $d$ (defined by a polynomial $f\in K[[ {\bf x} ]][z]$) and the projection to the affine space defined by $K[[ {\bf x} ]]$, we construct an invariant which detects whether the singularity is quasi-ordinary with respect to the projection. The construction uses a weighted version of Hironaka's characteristic polyhedron and successive embeddings of the singularity in affine spaces of higher dimensions. When $ f $ is quasi-ordinary, our invariant determines the semigroup of the singularity and hence it encodes the embedded topology of the singularity $ \{ f = 0 \} $ in a neighbourhood of the origin when $ K = \mathbb{C};$ moreover, the construction yields the approximate roots, giving a new point of view on this subject.

Defect and Local Uniformization

We give a simple algorithm showing that the reduction of the multiplicity of a characteristic p>0 hypersurface singularity along a valuation is possible if there is a finite linear projection which is defectless. The method begins with the algorithm of Zariski to reduce multiplicity of hypersuface singularities in characteristic 0 along a valuation. This gives a simple demonstration that the only obstruction to local uniformization in positive characteristic is from defect arising in finite projections of singularities.

Jet schemes and minimal toric embedded resolutions of rational double point singularities

Using the structure of the jet schemes of rational double point singularities, we construct "minimal embedded toric resolutions" of these singularities. We also establish, for these singularities, a correspondence between a natural class of irreducible components of the jet schemes centered at the singular locus and the set of divisors which appear on every "minimal embedded toric resolution". We prove that this correspondence is bijective except for the $E_8$ singulartiy. This can be thought as an embedded Nash correspondence for rational double point singularities.

Jet schemes of quasi-ordinary surface singularities

In this paper we give a complete description of the irreducible components of the jet schemes (with origin in the singular locus) of a two-dimensional quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularity. We associate with these components and with their codimensions and embedding dimensions, a weighted graph. We prove that the data of this weighted graph is equivalent to the data of the topological type of the singularity. We also determine a component of the jet schemes (or equivalently, a divisor on $\mathbb{A}^3$), that computes the log canonical threshold of the singularity embedded in $\mathbb{A}^3$. This provides us with pairs $X\subset\mathbb{A}^3$ whose log canonical thresholds are not contributed by monomial divisorial valuations. Note that for a pair $C\subset\mathbb{A}^2$, where $C$ is a plane curve, the log canonical threshold is always contributed by a monomial divisorial valuation (in suitable coordinates of $\mathbb{A}^2$).

Jet schemes and generating sequences of divisorial valuations in dimension two

Using the theory of jet schemes, we give a new approach to the description of a minimal generating sequence of a divisorial valuations on $\textbf{A}^2.$ For this purpose, we show how one can recover the approximate roots of an analytically irreducible plane curve from the equations of its jet schemes. As an application, for a given divisorial valuation $v$ centered at the origin of $\textbf{A}^2,$ we construct an algebraic embedding $\textbf{A}^2\hookrightarrow \textbf{A}^N,N\geq 2$ such that $v$ is the trace of a monomial valuation on $\textbf{A}^N.$ We explain how results in this direction give a constructive approach to a conjecture of Teissier on resolution of singularities by one toric morphism.

Jet schemes of toric surfaces

For $m\in \mathbb{N}, m\geq 1,$ we determine the irreducible components of the $m-th$ jet scheme of a normal toric surface $S.$ We give formulas for the number of these components and their dimensions. When $m$ varies, these components give rise to projective systems, to which we associate a weighted graph. We prove that the data of this graph is equivalent to the data of the analytical type of $S.$ Besides, we classify these irreducible components by an integer invariant that we call index of speciality. We prove that for $m$ large enough, the set of components with index of speciality $1,$ is in 1-1 correspondance with the set of exceptional divisors that appear on the minimal resolution of $S.$

Arc Spaces and Rogers-Ramanujan Identities

Arc spaces have been introduced in algebraic geometry as a tool to study singularities but they show strong connections with combinatorics as well. Exploiting these relations we obtain a new approach to the classical Rogers-Ramanujan Identities. The linking object is the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the arc space over a point of the base variety. In the case of the double point this is precisely the generating series for the integer partitions without equal or consecutive parts.

Jet schemes of toric surfaces (a short version)

For $m\in \IN, m\geq 1,$ we determine the irreducible components of the $m-th$ jet scheme of a toric surface $S.$ For $m$ big enough, we connect the number of a class of these irreducible components to the number of exceptional divisors on the minimal resolution of $S.$

Jet schemes of complex plane branches and equisingularity

For $m \in \mathbb{N}$, we determine the irreducible components of the $m$-th Jet Scheme of a complex branch $C$ and give formulas for their number $N(m)$ and for their codimensions, in terms of $m$ and the generators of the semigroup of $C$. This structure of the Jet Schemes determines and is determined by the topological type of $C$.
