General linear and Steinberg groups over the Leavitt algebra $L_{\mathbb F_2}(1,2)$

Let $R=L_{\F_2}(1,2)$. We prove that $\GL_r(R)$ is integrally acyclic for every $r\geq1$ and that the canonical map $\St_r(R)\to\GL_r(R)$ is an isomorphism for every $r\geq3$. The unit group $R^\times$ is finitely presented, and we describe an explicit finite presentation. The homology calculation uses leaf coordinates, simultaneous extensions of ordered frames, and finite-field actions on stabilizers. The Steinberg argument lifts relations from a simply connected frame complex and refines coordinates. We also state separate criteria for the two arguments over rings of characteristic two.

The group $\mathrm{TK}_1$ of graded and valued division algebras

For a division algebra $D$, let $K_1(D) = D^*/[D^*, D^*]$ and let $\operatorname{TK}_1(D)$ be the torsion subgroup of the abelian group $K_1(D)$. We study this torsion group for graded and valued division algebras, in parallel with the known theory of $\operatorname{SK}_1$. For a graded division algebra $E$ finite-dimensional over its center, we give exact sequences describing $\operatorname{TK}_1(E)$ in terms of $E_0$, the grade group~$Γ_E$, and the conjugation action of $E^*$ on $E_0$. These yield explicit formulas for $\operatorname{TK}_1(E)$ in the unramified, totally ramified, and semiramified cases. For a tame valued division algebra $D$ over its Henselian-valued center $K$, we identify the obstruction group $\mathbf H$ to a congruence theorem for $\TK(D)$. We show that if the residue field~$\overline K$ of the valuation on $K$ has characteristic $p > 0$, then $\mathbf H \congμ_K[p]$, the $p$-primary component of the group $μ_K$ of roots of unity in $K$; but if $\operatorname{char}(\overline K)=0$, then $\mathbf H=1$. We further prove a short exact sequence $$ 1\,\longrightarrow \,\mathbf H\, \longrightarrow \,\operatorname{TK}_1(D)\, \longrightarrow\, \operatorname{TK}_1(\gr(D))\, \longrightarrow \,1, $$ where $\gr(D)$ is the associated graded division algebra determined by the valuation on $D$ obtained from the valuation on $K$. We also prove a stability theorem for a graded division algebra $E$ with quotient division ring~$q(E)$, i.e., $$ \operatorname{TK}_1(E)\,\cong \,\operatorname{TK}_1(q(E)), $$ together with a new proof of the corresponding stability theorem for $\operatorname{SK}_1$. As applications, we obtain graded analogues of Motiee's primary decomposition and scalar-extension results for torsion Whitehead groups.

Torsion subgroups of Whitehead groups of graded division algebras

In this paper, we study the torsion subgroup, which is denoted by ${\rm TK}_1(E)$, of the Whitehead group $E^*/[E^*,E^*]$ of a graded division algebra $E$ which is finite dimensional over its center. In particular, we provide formulas for ${\rm TK}_1(E)$ in some special cases such as when $E$ is unramified, totally ramified or semiramified. Using the formulas, we are able to compute the group ${\rm TK}_1(D)$ of a valued division ring $D$, which is finite dimensional over a henselian center.

Matrix generators for the unit groups of $L_K(1,d)$

Let $K$ be a field and put $L_d=L_K(R_d)\cong L_K(1,d)$. Ordered leaf sets in the rooted $d$-ary tree determine copies of general linear groups over $K$ inside $L_d^\times$. We prove that these copies generate $L_d^\times$ for every $d\geq2$. In the binary case, $L_2^\times=\langle 1+eaf^*,1+fbe^*:a,b\in L_2\rangle$. We characterize finite generation of $L_d^\times$, determine the subgroup represented by monomial matrices, and embed $\GL_\infty(K)$ in $L_2^\times$. Over a finite field, finite presentability of $L_d^\times$ is equivalent to finite generation of the unstable $K_2$-group $K_2(n,L_d)$ for every $n=1+r(d-1)\geq5$, where $r\geq0$; we also compute $K_2(L_d)$.

Free subgroups in weighted Leavitt Path Algebras

We study unit groups of weighted Leavitt path algebras. Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $0$ and let $(E,ω)$ be a finite connected weighted graph. We prove that $L_K(E,ω)^\times$ is abelian if and only if $L_K(E,ω)$ is a domain. Equivalently, $L_K(E,ω)^\times$ contains no non-cyclic free subgroup if and only if $L_K(E,ω)$ is a domain.

Abelian maximal subgroups of valued division algebras

Let $D$ be a division ring. We study when the multiplicative group $D^*$ can contain an abelian maximal subgroup. We prove that this cannot occur for any noncommutative tame finite-dimensional central division algebra over a Henselian valued field with nontrivial valuation. We also apply the same idea to standard valued division rings, including twisted Laurent series, iterated Laurent series, and Mal'cev--Neumann series. Finally, we introduce a complementary malnormality obstruction and use it to rule out abelian maximal subgroups in quaternion division algebras over real-closed fields.

A note on Lie and Jordan structures of Leavitt path algebras

Let $L_K(E)$ be the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph $E$ over a field $K$. In this paper, we determine $E$ and $K$ for the Lie algebra $\mathbf{K}_{L_K(E)}$ and the Jordan algebra $\mathbf{S}_{L_K(E)}$ arising from $L_K(E)$ with respect to the standard involution to be solvable.

On Congruence Theorem for valued division algebras

Let $K$ be a field equipped with a Henselian valuation, and let $D$ be a tame central division algebra over the field $K$. Denote by $\mathrm{TK}_1(D)$ the torsion subgroup of the Whitehead group ${\rm K}_1(D) = D^*/D'$, where $D^*$ is the multiplicative group of $D$ and $D'$ is its derived subgroup. Let ${\bf G}$ be the subgroup of $D^*$ such that $\mathrm{TK}_1(D) = {\bf G}/D'$. In this note, we prove that either $(1 + M_D) \cap {\bf G} \subseteq D'$, or the residue field $\overline{K}$ has characteristic $p > 0$ and the group ${\bf H} := ((1 + M_D) \cap {\bf G})D'/D'$ is a $p$-group. Additionally, we provide examples of valued division algebras with non-trivial ${\bf H}$. This illustrates that, in contrast to the reduced Whitehead group \({\rm SK}_1(D)\), a complete analogue of the Congruence Theorem does not hold for \({\rm TK}_1(D)\).

Lie Algebras of Skew-Symmetric Elements in Simple Leavitt path algebras

Let $K$ be a field and $E$ be a graph. Let $L_K(E)$ be the Leavitt path algebra of $E$ over $K$ with the standard involution $^\star$. We investigate the set of skew-symmetric elements, $\mathbf{K}_{L_K(E)}=\{x\in L_K(E) : x^{\star}=-x\}$, and show that for any simple $L_K(E)$ containing a cycle, $[\mathbf{K}_{L_K(E)}, \mathbf{K}_{L_K(E)}]\ne\mathbf{K}_{L_K(E)}$. This provides a negative answer to a question posed by Herstein raised in 1961.

On free subgroups in Leavitt path algebras

Let $E$ be a graph and $K$ a field. In this paper we prove that the multiplicative group of a unital noncommutative Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ contains non-cyclic free subgroups provided $K$ is of characteristic $0$. Further, we provide a description of the generators of such free subgroups in term of the graph $E$.

Subnormal subgroups of almost locally simple artinian algebras with involutions

In this paper, we investigate subnormal subgroups of the multiplicative group of an almost locally simple artinian algebra with involution. In particular, we show that if either the set of traces or the set of norms of such a subgroup with respect to this involution is central, then the algebra must be either a quaternion division algebra or the matrix ring of degree $2$ over a field.

Multiplicative groups of Leavitt path algebras

In this paper, we prove that the multiplicative group of a unital non-commutative Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ and Cohn path algebra $C_K(E)$ contain a non-cyclic free subgroup, provided $K$ is a non-absolute field. We also provide a description of the generators of free subgroups in term of the graph $E$. Finally, we determine multiplicative groups of Leavitt path algebras of some special types.

Locally solvable maximal subgroups in division rings

Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$, and $G$ an almost subnormal subgroup of $D^*$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ contains a non-abelian locally solvable maximal subgroup, then $D$ must be a cyclic algebra of prime degree over $F$. Moreover, it is proved that every locally nilpotent maximal subgroup of $G$ is abelian.

Multiplicative Subgroups in weakly locally finite division rings

The description of the subgroup structure of a non-commutative division ring is the subject of the intensive study in the theory of division rings in particular, and of the theory of skew linear groups in general. This study is still so far to be complete. In this paper, we study this problem for weakly locally finite division rings. Such division rings constitute a large class which strictly contains the class of locally finite division rings.

Locally solvable and solvable-by-finite maximal subgroups of $GL_n(D)$

This paper aims at studying solvable-by-finite and locally solvable maximal subgroups of an almost subnormal subgroup of the general skew linear group $\GL_n(D)$ over a division ring $D$. It turns out that in the case where $D$ is non-commutative, if such maximal subgroups exist, then either it is abelian or $[D:F]<\infty$. Also, if $F$ is an infinite field and $n\geq 5$, then every locally solvable maximal subgroup of a normal subgroup of $\GL_n(F)$ is abelian.

On locally solvable subgroups in division rings

Let $D$ be a division ring with center $F$, and $G$ a subnormal subgroup of $D^*$. We show that if $G$ is a locally solvable group such that $G^{(i)}$ is algebraic over $F$, then $G$ must be central. Also, if $M$ is non-abelian locally solvable maximal subgroup of $G$ with $M^{(i)}$ algebraic over $F$, then $D$ is a cyclic algebra of prime degree over $F$.
