Existence of weak solutions for fast diffusion equation with a divergence type of drift term

We construct non-negative weak solutions of fast diffusion equations with a divergence type of drift term satisfying the $L^q$-energy inequality and speed estimate in Wasserstein spaces under some integrability conditions on the drift term. Furthermore, in the case that the drift term has a divergence-free structure, it turns out that its integrability conditions can be relaxed, which is also applicable to porous medium equations, thereby improving previous results. As an application, the existence of weak solutions is also discussed for a viscous Boussinesq system of the fast diffusion type.

Bounded weak solutions for Keller-Segel equations with generalized diffusion and logistic source via an unbalanced Optimal Transport splitting scheme

We consider a parabolic-elliptic type of Keller-Segel equations with generalized diffusion and logistic source under homogeneous Neumann-Neumann boundary conditions. We construct bounded weak solutions globally in time in an unbalanced optimal transport framework, provided that the magnitude of the chemotactic sensitivity can be restricted depending on parameters. In the case of subquadratic degradation of the logistic source, we quantify the chemotactic sensitivity, in particular, in terms of the power of degradation and the pointwise bound of the initial density.

Existence of weak solutions for nonlinear drift-diffusion equations with measure data

We consider nonlinear drift-diffusion equations (both porous medium equations and fast diffusion equations) with measure data. We establish the existence of nonnegative weak solutions satisfying gradient estimates, provided that the drift term belongs to a sub-scaling class relevant to the $L^1$ space. When the drift is divergence-free, this requirement can be relaxed: the drift may belong to a class that is supercritical with respect to $L^1$-scaling class, and the admissible range of the diffusion exponent $m$ is enlarged as well. By handling both the measure data and the drift, we obtain a new type of energy estimate. We also discuss sharpness by constructing counterexamples showing that the general-drift range cannot be improved under the corresponding integrability scale without the divergence-free cancellation. As an application, we construct weak solutions for a specific type of nonlinear diffusion equation with measure data coupled to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.

Existence of weak solutions for Porous medium equation with a divergence type of drift term in a bounded domain

We study porous medium equations with a divergence form of drift terms in a bounded domain with no-flux lateral boundary conditions. We establish $L^q$-weak solutions for $ 1\leq q < \infty$ in Wasserstein space under appropriate conditions on the drift, which is an extension of authors' previous works done in the whole space into the case of bounded domains. Applying existence results to a certain Keller-Segel equation of consumption type, construction of $L^q$-weak solutions is also made, in case that the equation of a biological organism is of porous medium type.

Temporal decays and asymptotic behaviors for a Vlasov equation with a flocking term coupled to incompressible fluid flow

We are concerned with large-time behaviors of solutions for Vlasov--Navier--Stokes equations in two dimensions and Vlasov-Stokes system in three dimensions including the effect of velocity alignment/misalignment. We first revisit the large-time behavior estimate for our main system and refine assumptions on the dimensions and a communication weight function. In particular, this allows us to take into account the effect of the misalignment interactions between particles. We then use a sharp heat kernel estimate to obtain the exponential time decay of fluid velocity to its average in $L^\infty$-norm. For the kinetic part, by employing a certain type of Sobolev norm weighted by modulations of averaged particle velocity, we prove the exponential time decay of the particle distribution, provided that local particle distribution function is uniformly bounded. Moreover, we show that the support of particle distribution function in velocity shrinks to a point, which is the mean of averaged initial particle and fluid velocities, exponentially fast as time goes to infinity. This also provides that for any $p \in [1,\infty]$, the $p$-Wasserstein distance between the particle distribution function and the tensor product of the local particle distributions and Dirac measure at that point in velocity converges exponentially fast to zero as time goes to infinity.

Uniqueness and characterization of local minimizers for the interaction energy with mildly repulsive potentials

In this paper, we are concerned with local minimizers of an interaction energy governed by repulsive-attractive potentials of power-law type in one dimension. We prove that sum of two Dirac masses is the unique local minimizer under the $λ-$Wasserstein metric topology with $1\le λ<\infty$, provided masses and distance of Dirac deltas are equally half and one, respectively. In addition, in case of $\infty$-Wasserstein metric, we characterize stability of steady-state solutions depending on powers of interaction potentials.

Existence of regular solutions for a certain type of non-Newtonian Navier-Stokes equations

We are concerned with existence of regular solutions for non-Newtonian fluids in dimension three. For a certain type of non-Newtonian fluids we prove local existence of unique regular solutions, provided that the initial data are sufficiently smooth. Moreover, if the $H^3$-norm of initial data is sufficiently small, then the regular solution exists globally in time.

Value functions in the Wasserstein spaces: finite time horizons

We study analogs of value functions arising in classical mechanics in the space of probability measures endowed with the Wasserstein metric $W_p$, for $1<p<\infty$. Our main result is that each of these generalized value functions is a type of viscosity solution of an appropriate Hamilton-Jacobi equation, completing a program initiated by Gangbo, Tudorascu, and Nguyen. Of particular interest is a formula we derive for a generalized value function when the associated potential energy is of the form ${\cal V}(μ)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}V(x)dμ(x)$. This formula allows us to make rigorous a well known heuristic connection between Euler-Poisson equations and classical Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Further results are presented which suggest there is a rich theory to be developed of deterministic control in the Wasserstein spaces.

Infinite horizon value functions in the Wasserstein spaces

We perform a systematic study of optimization problems in the Wasserstein spaces that are analogs of infinite horizon, deterministic control problems. We derive necessary conditions on action minimizing paths and present a sufficient condition for their existence. We also verify that the corresponding generalized value functions are a type of viscosity solution of a time independent, Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the space of probability measures. Finally, we prove a special case of a conjecture involving the subdifferential of generalized value functions and their relation to action minimizing paths.

Moreau-Yosida approximation and convergence of Hamiltonian systems on Wasserstein space

In this paper, we study the stability property of Hamiltonian systems on the Wasserstein space. Let $H$ be a given Hamiltonian satisfying certain properties. We regularize $H$ using the Moreau-Yosida approximation and denote it by $H_τ.$ We show that solutions of the Hamiltonian system for $H_τ$ converge to a solution of the Hamiltonian system for $H$ as $τ$ converges to zero. We provide sufficient conditions on $H$ to carry out this process.

Generating and Adding Flows on Locally Complete Metric Spaces

As a generalization of a vector field on a manifold, the notion of an arc field on a locally complete metric space was introduced in \cite{BC}. In that paper, the authors proved an analogue of the Cauchy-Lipschitz Theorem i.e they showed the existence and uniqueness of solution curves for a time independent arc field. In this paper, we extend the result to the time dependent case, namely we show the existence and uniqueness of solution curves for a time dependent arc field. We also introduce the notion of the sum of two time dependent arc fields and show existence and uniqueness of solution curves for this sum.

Optimal transportation, topology and uniqueness

The Monge-Kantorovich transportation problem involves optimizing with respect to a given a cost function. Uniqueness is a fundamental open question about which little is known when the cost function is smooth and the landscapes containing the goods to be transported possess (non-trivial) topology. This question turns out to be closely linked to a delicate problem (# 111) of Birkhoff [14]: give a necessary and sufficient condition on the support of a joint probability to guarantee extremality among all measures which share its marginals. Fifty years of progress on Birkhoff's question culminate in Hestir and Williams' necessary condition which is nearly sufficient for extremality; we relax their subtle measurability hypotheses separating necessity from sufficiency slightly, yet demonstrate by example that to be sufficient certainly requires some measurability. Their condition amounts to the vanishing of the measure γoutside a countable alternating sequence of graphs and antigraphs in which no two graphs (or two antigraphs) have domains that overlap, and where the domain of each graph / antigraph in the sequence contains the range of the succeeding antigraph (respectively, graph). Such sequences are called numbered limb systems. We then explain how this characterization can be used to resolve the uniqueness of Kantorovich solutions for optimal transportation on a manifold with the topology of the sphere.

Extremal doubly stochastic measures and optimal transportation

This article connects the theory of extremal doubly stochastic measures to the geometry and topology of optimal transportation. We begin by reviewing an old question (# 111) of Birkhoff in probability and statistics [4], which is to give a necessary and sufficient condition on the support of a joint probability to guarantee extremality among all measures which share its marginals. Following work of Douglas, Lindenstrauss, and Beneš and Štěpán, Hestir and Williams [15] found a necessary condition which is nearly sufficient; we relax their subtle measurability hypotheses separating necessity from sufficiency slightly, yet demonstrate by example that to be sufficient certainly requires some measurability. Their condition amounts to the vanishing of γ outside a countable alternating sequence of graphs and antigraphs in which no two graphs (or two antigraphs) have domains that overlap, and where the domain of each graph / antigraph in the sequence contains the range of the succeeding antigraph (respectively, graph). Such sequences are called numbered limb systems. Surprisingly, this characterization can be used to resolve the uniqueness question for optimal transportation on manifolds with the topology of the sphere.

Differential forms on Wasserstein space and infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems

Let M denote the space of probability measures on R^D endowed with the Wasserstein metric. A differential calculus for a certain class of absolutely continuous curves in M was introduced by Ambrosio, Gigli and Savare'. In this paper we develop a calculus for the corresponding class of differential forms on M. In particular we prove an analogue of Green's theorem for 1-forms and show that the corresponding first cohomology group, in the sense of de Rham, vanishes. For D=2d we then define a symplectic distribution on M in terms of this calculus, thus obtaining a rigorous framework for the notion of Hamiltonian systems as introduced by Ambrosio and Gangbo. Throughout the paper we emphasize the geometric viewpoint and the role played by certain diffeomorphism groups of R^D.
