Shadow images of compact objects in beyond Horndeski theory

A beyond Horndeski theory is considered that admits wormholes, black holes and naked singularities. In this theory the shadow images of the black holes and the exotic compact objects (ECOs), illuminated by an optically and geometrically thin disk, are investigated. The results show that the three kinds of objects cast unlike shadow images, in particular, because the different objects possess a different number of light rings. The different boundaries of the accretion disk also affect the images. This may provide further insight into the nature of the shadow images of massive compact objects.

Higher-order correction to weak-field lensing of an Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole

The gravitational lensing effect at higher order under weak-field approximation is believed to be important to distinguish black holes and other compact objects such as wormholes. The deflection angle of a generic wormhole is difficult to solve analytically; thus approximation methods are implemented. In this paper, we investigate the weak-field deflection angle of a specific wormhole, the Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole, up to the 1/b^4 order. We use different approximation formalisms, study their precision at 1/b^4 order by a comparison to a purely numerical result, and finally rank these formalisms by their accuracy. Moreover, we find that certain formalisms are sensitive to the choice of coordinate system; thus it is important to choose the coordinate system appropriately for the evaluating of lensing physics.

Light Ring behind Wormhole Throat: Geodesics, Images and Shadows

The geodesics of the Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole with two parameters are studied. The asymmetric wormhole has only one light ring and one innermost stable circular orbit located on one side of the wormhole throat. Consequently, certain light rays can be reflected back by the wormhole. Additionally, the same wormhole can have different appearances on both sides of the throat. We present novel images of the wormhole with a light ring behind the throat in a scenario with an accretion disk as the light source and in a backlit wormhole scenario, which are distinct from the images of other compact objects and have the potential to be observed.

Einstein-scalar field solutions in AdS spacetime: clouds, boundary conditions, and scalar multipoles

We consider an Einstein-scalar field model which is a consistent truncation of ${\cal N}=8$ $D=4$ gauged supergravity, the scalar field possessing a potential which is unbounded from below and a tachyonic mass above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We investigate the spherically symmetric asymptotically anti-de Sitter soliton and black hole solutions, with the aim of clarifying the asymptotics and the possible boundary conditions at infinity. The emerging picture is contrasted with that found for an Einstein-scalar field model with the same scalar mass and a quartic self-interaction term. We also provide arguments for the existence of solitonic solutions which can be viewed as non-linear continuation of the (probe) scalar multipolar clouds, with emphasis on the dipole case. Apart from numerical results, exact solutions are found for solitons with a monopole and dipole scalar field, as perturbations around the AdS background.

Echoes from Classical Black Holes

We study echoes of free massless scalar from dyonic black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity extended with the quasi-topological electromagnetic term. These asymptotically-flat black holes all satisfy the dominant energy condition. We find that for suitable parameters, the effective potential can have double peaks and consequently echoes of quasinormal modes arise. In general the echo frequency associated with the initial wave packet released inside the two peaks is about twice the frequency of the one released outside.

Echoes from Asymmetric Wormholes and Black Bounce

The time evolution of the field perturbations in the wormhole and black bounce backgrounds are investigated. We find that the asymmetry of spacetime results in the asymmetry of the effective potential of the perturbed equation. The quasinormal modes are strongly dependent on the shapes of the effective potentials. Specifically, the signals of echoes arise in some wormhole cases and reflect the asymmetric properties of wormholes. We examine the features of echoes within different circumstances. Besides, the negative values of effective potentials usually imply the instability of the system. By analyzing some specific metrics, we find that the negative regions of effective potentials are enclosed by the black hole horizons in these cases. But this statement could be broken in asymmetric cases.

Trapping Horizons of the Evolving Charged Wormhole and Black Bounce

We obtain one family of dynamic solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar(EMS) theory. Our solutions could describe the evolving charged black(white) hole or wormhole and its transition, including the case of black bounce/wormhole transition. We compare different wormhole throat definitions and suggest that the usage of trapping horizons is the most suitable choice for tracking the evolution of the dynamic black(white) hole and wormhole, and their conversion in a unified framework. Then we research several evolving processes in the appropriate parameters region, including the charge, the initial condition for the scalar hair, and parameters in our EMS Lagrangian. The results show that the appearance of a degenerate marginal trapped surface is the crucial event for the conversion or transition, particularly in these cases: i) when the evolving wormhole converts to a black hole, the surface emerges and splits into two trapping horizons; ii) if the metric would become a black hole but finally fails, two trapping horizons combine as the surface and then vanish; iii) if the black bounce/wormhole transition happens, one single trapping horizon changes its type.

Cosmological Time Crystals From Einstein-Cubic Gravities

By including appropriate Riemman cubic invariants, we find that the dynamics of classical time crystals can be straightforwardly realized in Einstein gravity on the FLRW metric. The time reflection symmetry is spontaneously broken in the two vacua with the same scale factor $a$, but opposite $\dot a$. The tunneling from one vacuum to the other provides a robust mechanism for bounce universes; it always occurs for systems with positive energy density. For suitable matter energy-momentum tensor we also construct cyclic universes. Cosmological solutions that resemble the classical time crystals can be constructed in massive gravity.

Baryogenesis through Asymmetric Hawking Radiation from Primordial Black Holes as Dark Matter

We examine the extent to which primordial black holes (PBHs) can constitute the observed dark matter while also giving rise to the measured matter-antimatter asymmetry and account for the observed baryon abundance through asymmetric Hawking radiation generated by a derivative coupling of curvature to the baryon-lepton current. We consider both broad and monochromatic mass spectra for this purpose. For the monochromatic spectrum we find that the correct dark matter and baryon energy densities are recovered for peak masses of the spectrum of $M_{\rm pk} \geq 10^{12}$ kg whereas for the broad case the observed energy densities can be reproduced regardless of peak mass. Adopting some simplifications for the early-time expansion history as a first approximation, we also find that the measured baryon asymmetry can be recovered within an order of magnitude. We argue furthermore that the correct value of the baryon-lepton yield can in principle be retrieved for scenarios where a significant amount of the radiation is produced by PBH decay during or after reheating, as is expected when the decaying PBHs also cause reheating, or when an early matter-dominated phase is considered. We conclude from this first analysis that the model merits further investigation.

Bronnikov-like Wormholes in Einstein-Scalar Gravity

In this paper, we analyse the global structure of the Bronnikov wormhole, which is the most general spherically-symmetric and static solution in Einstein gravity coupled to a free massless phantom scalar. We then introduce a scalar potential and construct a large class of exact solutions that can be viewed as generalizations of the Bronnikov wormhole. We study the global structure and classify the parameters of these new wormholes. For suitable parameters, some are regular black holes with a bouncing de Sitter spacetime inside the event horizon.

Charged Ellis Wormhole and Black Bounce

By replacing the scalar $ϕ$ with $iϕ$ in the solution constructed in Ref\cite{Huang:2019lsl}, we obtain electrically-charged wormhole and black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory, in which the scalar is a phantom field coupled to the Maxwell field non-minimally. Our solutions are simpler than the previously-known charged wormholes in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in that both the scalar and the radius of the foliating sphere of our solutions are independent of electric charge. The wormhole solution has two asymptotically flat regions and reduces to Ellis wormhole when the charge is zero. We draw the embedding diagrams for the wormholes and demonstrate that the two sides are asymmetric. As the charge increases, horizons will appear, and the wormhole becomes a black hole, with no curvature singularity but a wormhole throat or a bounce. We analyze black hole thermodynamics and the causal structure. We also determine the photon spheres of both the wormhole and the black hole and discuss their observable characteristics.

Static and Dynamic Charged Black Holes

We consider a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories in general dimensions and construct both static and dynamic charged black holes. We adopt the reverse engineering procedure and make a specific ansatz for the scalar field and then derive the necessary scalar potential and the non-minimal coupling function between the scalar and the Maxwell field. The resulting static black holes contain mass and electric charge as integration constants. We find that some of the static solutions can be promoted to become dynamical ones in the Eddington-Finkelstein-like coordinates. The collapse solutions describe the evolution from a smaller charged black hole to a larger black hole state, driven by the scalar field.

Bounce Universe and Black Holes from Critical Einsteinian Cubic Gravity

We show that there exists a critical point for the coupling constants in Einsteinian cubic gravity where the linearized equations on the maximally-symmetric vacuum vanish identically. We construct an exact isotropic bounce universe in the critical theory in four dimensions. The comoving time runs from minus infinity to plus infinity, yielding a smooth universe bouncing between two de Sitter vacua. In five dimensions we adopt numerical approach to construct a bounce solution, where a singularity occurred before the bounce takes place. We then construct exact anisotropic bounces that connect two isotropic de Sitter spacetimes with flat spatial sections. We further construct exact AdS black holes in the critical theory in four and five dimensions and obtain an exact AdS wormbrane in four dimensions.

Holographic Complexity and Two Identities of Action Growth

The recently proposed complexity-action conjecture allows one to calculate how fast one can produce a quantum state from a reference state in terms of the on-shell action of the dual AdS black hole at the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. We show that the action growth rate is given by the difference of the generalized enthalpy between the two corresponding horizons. The proof relies on the second identity that the surface-term contribution on a horizon is given by the product of the associated temperature and entropy.
