Developing a Learner-Centered Teaching Routine

This paper shares a classroom story from Fall 2022 to Spring 2025 about a learner centered routine in undergraduate mathematics. I use four steps: an opening question, a short mini lecture about meaning, structured small group work, and a short end of class exit check, sometimes with quick visuals. I used this mainly in elementary statistics, with some use in calculus and linear algebra. The evidence is local and practical: my notes, one minute exit checks, informal student comments and surveys, and conference feedback. Across courses, I saw less passive lecturing, more visible participation, and students explaining their reasoning during the closing time. Limits are clear: one instructor and no controlled comparisons. Next I plan to improve the prompts for different student groups and to simplify the visuals. I offer a simple routine and timing that other instructors can adapt to their own classes.

Directional Expansiveness for Rd-Actions and for Penrose Tilings

We define and study two kinds of directional expansiveness, weak and strong, for an action T of \mathbb{R}^d on a compact metric space X. We show that for \mathbb{R}^2 finite local complexity (FLC) tiling dynamical systems, weak and strong expansiveness are the same, and are both equivalent to a simple coding property. Then we show for the Penrose tiling dynamical system, which is FLC, there are exactly five non expansive directions, the directions perpendicular to the 5th roots of unity. We also study Raphael Robinson's set of 24 Penrose Wang tiles and show the corresponding Penrose Wang tile dynamical system is strictly ergodic. Finally, we study two deformations of the Penrose Wang tile system, one where the square Wang tiles are all deformed into a 2\pi/5 rhombus, and another where they are deformed into a set of eleven tetragon tiles. We show both of these are topologically conjugate to the Penrose tiling dynamical system.

A Two-Step Approach for Data-Efficient French Pronunciation Learning

Recent studies have addressed intricate phonological phenomena in French, relying on either extensive linguistic knowledge or a significant amount of sentence-level pronunciation data. However, creating such resources is expensive and non-trivial. To this end, we propose a novel two-step approach that encompasses two pronunciation tasks: grapheme-to-phoneme and post-lexical processing. We then investigate the efficacy of the proposed approach with a notably limited amount of sentence-level pronunciation data. Our findings demonstrate that the proposed two-step approach effectively mitigates the lack of extensive labeled data, and serves as a feasible solution for addressing French phonological phenomena even under resource-constrained environments.
