Observational constraints on a unified dark matter and dark energy model based on generalized Chaplygin gas

We study a generalized version of Chaplygin gas as unified model of dark matter and dark energy. Using realistic theoretical models and the currently available observational data from the age of the universe, the expansion history based on the type Ia supernovae, the matter power spectrum, the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropy power spectra, and the perturbation growth factor we put the unified model under observational test. As the model has only two free parameters in the flat Friedmann background [$Λ$CDM (cold dark matter) model has only one free parameter] we show that the model is already tightly constrained by currently available observations. The only parameter space extremely close to the $Λ$CDM model is allowed in this unified model.

Roles of dark energy perturbations in the dynamical dark energy models: Can we ignore them?

We show the importance of properly including the perturbations of the dark energy component in the dynamical dark energy models based on a scalar field and modified gravity theories in order to meet with present and future observational precisions. Based on a simple scaling scalar field dark energy model, we show that observationally distinguishable substantial differences appear by ignoring the dark energy perturbation. By ignoring it the perturbed system of equations becomes inconsistent and deviations in (gauge-invariant) power spectra depend on the gauge choice.

Does Unruh radiation accelerate the universe? A novel approach to the cosmic acceleration

We present a novel mechanism for the present acceleration of the universe. We find that the temperature of the Unruh radiation perceived by the brane is not equal to the inherent temperature (Hawking temperature at the apparent horizon) of the brane universe in the frame of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model. The Unruh radiation perceived by a dust dominated brane is always warmer than the brane measured by the geometric temperature, which naturally induces an energy flow between bulk and brane based on the most sound thermodynamics principles. Through a thorough investigation to the microscopic mechanism of interaction between bulk Unruh radiation and brane matter, we put forward that an energy influx from bulk Unruh radiation to the dust matter on the brane accelerates the universe.

Some properties of a new class of plane symmetric solution

A new class of static plane symmetric solution of Einstein field equation, which is judged as the source of Taub solution, was presented in our previous work. In this letter the properties of geodesics of this solution are explored. It is found that this solution can be an appropriate simulation to the field of a uniformly accelerated observer in Newton mechanics. The essence of the source is investigated. A phantom with dust and photon is suggested as the substance of the source matter.

N-dimensional plane symmetric solution with perfect fluid source

A new class of plane symmetric solution sourced by a perfect fluid is found in our recent work. An n-dimensional ($n\geq 4$) global plane symmetric solution of Einstein field equation generated by a perfect fluid source is investigated, which is the direct generalization of our previous 4-dimensional solution. One time-like Killing vector and $(n-2)(n-1)/2$ space-like Killing vectors, which span a Euclidean group $G_{(n-2)(n-1)/2}$, are permitted in this solution. The regions of the parameters constrained by weak, strong and dominant energy conditions for the source are studied. The boundary condition to match to n-dimensional Taub metric and Minkowski metric are analyzed respectively.

Braneworld cosmology in the sourced-Taub background

A new braneworld in the sourced-Taub background is proposed. The gravity field equations in the internal source region and external vacuum region are investigated, respectively. We find that the equation of state for the effective dark energy of a dust brane in the source region can cross the phantom divide $w=-1$. Furthermore, there is a drop on $H(z)$ diagram, which presents a possible mechanism for the recent direct data of $H(z)$.

Infrared divergence of pure Einstein gravity contributions to cosmological density power spectrum

We probe the pure Einstein's gravity contributions to the second-order density power spectrum. In the small-scale, we discover that the Einstein's gravity contribution is negligibly small. This guarantees that Newton's gravity is sufficient to handle the baryon acoustic oscillation scale. In the large scale, however, we discover that the Einstein's gravity contribution to the second-order power spectrum dominates the linear-order power spectrum. Thus, pure Einstein gravity contribution appearing in the third-order perturbation leads to an infrared divergence in the power spectrum.

A new class of plane symmetric solution

A new class of static plane symmetric solution of Einstein field equation generated by a perfect fluid source is put forward. A special family of this new solution is investigated in detail. The constraints on the parameters by different energy conditions are studied. The classical stability of this solution is discussed. The junction conditions matching to Minkowski metric and Taub metric are analyzed respectively.

Axion as a Cold Dark Matter candidate

Here we generally prove that the axion as a coherently oscillating scalar field acts as a cold dark matter in nearly all cosmologically relevant scales. The proof is made in the linear perturbation order. Compared with our previous proof based on solutions, here we compare the equations in the axion with the ones in the cold dark matter, thus expanding the valid range of the proof. Deviation from purely pressureless medium appears in very small scale where axion reveals a peculiar equation of state. Our analysis is made in the presence of the cosmological constant, and our conclusions are valid in the presence of other fluid and field components.

Probing the nature of cosmic acceleration

The cosmic acceleration is one of the most significant cosmological discoveries over the last century. The two categories of explanation are exotic component (dark energy) and modified gravity. We constrain the two types of model by a joint analysis with perturbation growth and direct $H(z)$ data. Though the minimal $χ^2$ of the $Λ$CDM is almost the same as that of DGP, in the sense of consistency we find that the dark energy ($Λ$CDM) model is more favored through a detailed comparison with the corresponding parameters fitted by expansion data.

Nonlinear cosmological power spectra in Einstein's gravity

Is Newton's gravity sufficient to handle the weakly nonlinear evolution stages of the cosmic large-scale structures? Here we resolve the issue by analytically deriving the density and velocity power spectra to the second order in the context of Einstein's gravity. The recently found pure general relativistic corrections appearing in the third-order perturbation contribute to power spectra to the second order. In this work the complete density and velocity power spectra to the second order are derived. The power transfers among different scales in the density power spectrum are estimated in the context of Einstein's gravity. The relativistic corrections in the density power spectrum are estimated to be smaller than the Newtonian one to the second order, but these could be larger than higher-order nonlinear Newtonian terms.

Newtonian versus relativistic nonlinear cosmology

Both for the background world model and its linear perturbations Newtonian cosmology coincides with the zero-pressure limits of relativistic cosmology. However, such successes in Newtonian cosmology are not purely based on Newton's gravity, but are rather guided ones by previously known results in Einstein's theory. The action-at-a-distance nature of Newton's gravity requires further verification from Einstein's theory for its use in the large-scale nonlinear regimes. We study the domain of validity of the Newtonian cosmology by investigating weakly nonlinear regimes in relativistic cosmology assuming a zero-pressure and irrotational fluid. We show that, first, if we ignore the coupling with gravitational waves the Newtonian cosmology is exactly valid even to the second order in perturbation. Second, the pure relativistic correction terms start appearing from the third order. Third, the correction terms are independent of the horizon scale and are quite small in the large-scale near the horizon. These conclusions are based on our special (and proper) choice of variables and gauge conditions. In a complementary situation where the system is weakly relativistic but fully nonlinear (thus, far inside the horizon) we can employ the post-Newtonian approximation. We also show that in the large-scale structures the post-Newtonian effects are quite small. As a consequence, now we can rely on the Newtonian gravity in analyzing the evolution of nonlinear large-scale structures even near the horizon volume.

Cosmological nonlinear hydrodynamics with post-Newtonian corrections

The post-Newtonian (PN) approximation, based on the assumptions of weak gravitational fields and slow motions, provides a way to estimate general relativistic effects in the fully nonlinear evolution stage of the large-scale cosmic structures. We extend Chandrasekhar's first order PN (1PN) hydrodynamics based on the Minkowski background to the Robertson-Walker background. We assume the presence of Friedmann's cosmological spacetime as a background. In the background we include the three-space curvature, the cosmological constant and general pressure. In the Newtonian order and 1PN order we include general pressure, stress, and flux. The Newtonian hydrodynamic equations appear naturally in the 0PN order. The spatial gauge degree of freedom is fixed in a unique manner and the basic equations are arranged without taking the temporal gauge condition. In this way we can conveniently try alternative temporal gauge conditions. We investigate a number of temporal gauge conditions under which all the remaining variables are equivalently gauge-invariant. Our aim is to present the fully nonlinear 1PN equations in a form suitable for implementation in conventional Newtonian hydrodynamic simulations with minimal extensions. The 1PN terms can be considered as relativistic corrections added to the well known Newtonian equations. The proper arrangement of the variables and equations in combination with suitable gauge conditions would allow the possible future 1PN cosmological simulations to become more tractable. Our equations and gauges are arranged for that purpose. We suggest ways of controlling the numerical accuracy. The typical 1PN order terms are about $10^{-6} \sim 10^{-4}$ times smaller than the Newtonian terms.

CMBR constraints on $R^2$ gravity

Considering the inflation model based on a $f(R)$ gravity theory, we obtain several important constraints from the large angular scale CMBR observations. First, the ordinary slow-roll assumption during the inflation together with Harrison-Zel'dovich spectral conditions chooses $R^2$ gravity as a unique candidate. Second, the $R^2$ gravity leads to specific near scale-invariant Harrison-Zel'dovich spectra both for the scalar and the tensor perturbations. Third, using the COBE-DMR data we derive the strong constraints on the coupling constant and the energy scale during the inflation. Also, our result shows the gravitational wave contribution to the CMBR anisotropy is negligible. So, the future observation can provide the strong constraints on the inflation model based on $R^2$ gravity. This is a summary of a talk presented in COSMO-01, and the more completed published version can be found in astro-ph/0102423.
