Development and Initial Performance of an Upgraded NaI(Tl) Crystal Encapsulation for COSINE-100U

The COSINE-100 experiment was designed to test the DAMA/LIBRA annual-modulation claim using low-background NaI(Tl) detectors. For the COSINE-100U upgrade, we developed a new crystal-encapsulation system to increase light-collection efficiency while preserving long-term detector stability, thereby improving sensitivity to low-mass dark matter. The upgraded design eliminates the quartz optical windows used in COSINE-100 and directly couples the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to the crystal end faces through 2-mm-thick silicone optical pads, thereby reducing the number of optical interfaces. For the larger crystals, the crystal edges were beveled to guide scintillation light more efficiently onto 3-inch high-quantum-efficiency PMTs. The performance study uses 2462~h (102.6~days) of room-temperature COSINE-100U data and, for direct background comparisons, reference COSINE-100 data acquired near the end of operation. 698~h (29.1~days) of COSINE-100 data acquired near the end of operation in March 2023. All eight crystals showed higher light yields than in COSINE-100, with values ranging from 15.8 to 27.7~p.e./keV; six crystals exceeded 20~p.e./keV. The measured bulk-$α$ rates were lower than the COSINE-100 values and consistent with the expected time evolution of internal $^{210}$Pb, while the 1--2-MeV surface-$α$ rates were substantially reduced. The upgrade also restored two crystals that had previously been excluded from the COSINE-100 physics analysis because of poor optical performance. Independent validation tests demonstrated that the encapsulation remains mechanically robust and optically stable during long-term immersion in liquid scintillator at low temperature. This paper presents the encapsulation design, the room-temperature detector performance, and the reduction in surface-related backgrounds achieved at the Yemilab facility.

New Physics Opportunities at Neutrino Facilities: BSM Physics at Accelerator, Atmospheric, and Reactor Neutrino Experiments

Since the discovery of the Higgs boson, the long-standing task at hand in particle physics is the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model, which accounts for only about 5\% of the Universe. In light of this situation, the neutrino sector has drawn significant attention due to neutrino oscillations, which require physics beyond the Standard Model and have prompted a wide array of active and planned experimental programs. Notably, neutrino facilities offer substantial potential to search for new physics beyond neutrino oscillations, owing to their precision measurement capabilities, diverse experimental configurations, and various neutrino sources. This white paper summarizes the landscape of new physics that can be probed at current and future neutrino experiments, categorized into laboratory-produced and cosmogenic signals. We discuss recent experimental results interpreted through the lens of new physics, as well as detailed plans and projected sensitivities of next-generation facilities. This summary is based on presentations from the 4th Workshop on New Physics Opportunities in Neutrino Facilities (NPN 2024), held at IBS in Daejeon, Korea, on June 3-5, 2024. Particular emphasis is placed on accelerator-based neutrino experiments and a range of neutrino programs in East Asia. We also outline key tasks necessary to realize the promising new physics opportunities ahead.

Validation of the COSINE-100U NaI(Tl) Encapsulation for Low-Temperature Operation in Liquid Scintillator

The COSINE-100U (upgrade) will enhance the sensitivity of the COSINE-100 dark matter search by operating the detector array immersed in liquid scintillator (LS) at $-30^oC$. To validate the detector design for these conditions, we constructed a module using the COSINE-100U encapsulation and performed a dedicated long-term stability study. The module was first monitored at room temperature for ~110 days in air, followed by a one-week immersion in LAB-based LS to verify initial compatibility. Upon confirming stable optical performance, the temperature was lowered to $-33^oC$. During approximately 150 days of continuous operation at low temperature, we observed no degradation in performance. These results demonstrate the chemical and mechanical robustness of the encapsulation, confirming its suitability for the COSINE-100U physics run.

New Constraints on Axion-Like Particles with the NEON Detector at a Nuclear Reactor

We report new constraints on axion-like particles (ALPs) using data from the NEON experiment, which features a 16.7 kg of NaI(Tl) target located 23.7 meters from a 2.8 GW thermal power nuclear reactor. Analyzing a total exposure of 3063 kg$\cdot$days, with 1596 kg$\cdot$days during reactor-on and 1467 kg$\cdot$days during reactor-off periods, we compared energy spectra to search for ALP-induced signals. No significant signal was observed, enabling us to set exclusion limits at the 95\% confidence level. These limits probe previously unexplored regions of the ALP parameter space, particularly for axion mass ($m_a$) near $1$ MeV/c$^2$. For ALP-photon coupling (${g_{aγ}}$), limits reach as low as 6.24$\times$ 10$^{-6}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at $m_a$ = 3.0 MeV/c$^2$, while for ALP-electron coupling (${g_{ae}}$), limits reach 4.95$\times$ 10$^{-8}$ at $m_a$ = 1.02 MeV/c$^2$. This work demonstrates the potential for future reactor experiments to probe unexplored ALP parameter space.

Sensitivities for coherent elastic scattering of solar and supernova neutrinos with future NaI(Tl) dark matter search detectors of COSINE-200/1T

We investigate the prospects for measuring the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering of solar and supernova neutrinos in future NaI(Tl) dark matter detection experiments. Considering the reduced background and improved light yield of the recently developed NaI(Tl) crystals, more than 3$σ$ observation sensitivities of the supernova neutrino within the Milky Way are demonstrated. In the case of the solar neutrino, approximately 3 observations are marginal with a 1 ton NaI(Tl) experiment assuming an order of magnitude reduced background, five photoelectron thresholds, and 5-year data exposure.

Performance of an ultra-pure NaI(Tl) detector produced by an indigenously-developed purification method and crystal growth for the COSINE-200 experiment

The COSINE-100 experiment has been operating with 106 kg of low-background NaI(Tl) detectors to test the results from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, which claims to have observed dark matter. However, since the background of the NaI(Tl) crystals used in the COSINE-100 experiment is 2-3 times higher than that in the DAMA detectors, no conclusion regarding the claimed observation from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment could be reached. Therefore, we plan to upgrade the current COSINE-100 experiment to the next phase, COSINE-200, by using ultra-low background NaI(Tl) detectors. The basic principle was already proved with the commercially available Astro-grade NaI powder from Sigma-Aldrich company. However, we have developed a mass production process of ultra-pure NaI powder at the Center for Underground Physics (CUP) of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Korea, using the direct purification of the raw NaI powder. We plan to produce more than 1,000 kg of ultra-pure powder for the COSINE200 experiment. With our crystal grower installed at CUP, we have successfully grown a low-background crystal using our purification technique for the NaI powder. We have assembled a low-background NaI(Tl) detector. In this article, we report the performance of this ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystal detector produced at IBS, Korea.

NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator encapsulated in two organic-scintillator layers with pulse shape data analysis

Thallium-doped sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) crystals are widely used in radiation detection applications, from gamma-ray spectroscopy to particle dark matter searches. However, if the crystal is exposed to relative humidity of even a few percent, its light emission degrades, making the crystal impractical as a detector. Surrounding the crystal with organic scintillators not only protects the surface of the crystal from humid air but also offers a new capability to tag backgrounds such as external gamma rays and surface contaminations. We developed a detector that is constructed by fully encasing a NaI(Tl) crystal in a plastic scintillator and then immersing the plastic-crystal assembly in liquid scintillator. Using data collected from this triple phoswich detector, a pulse shape analysis is able to identify the various radiation signals from the three scintillators. Additionally, we find that the crystal's emission quality is maintained for a month.

A facility for mass production of ultra-pure NaI powder for the COSINE-200 experiment

COSINE-200 is the next phase of the ongoing COSINE-100 experiment. The main purpose of the experiment is the performance of an unambiguous verification of the annual modulation signals observed by the DAMA experiment. The success of the experiment critically depends on the production of a 200 kg array of ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystal detectors that have lower backgrounds than the DAMA crystals. The purification of raw powder is the initial but important step toward the production of ultra-pure NaI(Tl) detectors. We have already demonstrated that fractional recrystallization from water solutions is an effective method for the removal of the problematic K and Pb elements. For the mass production of purified powder, a clean facility for the fractional recrystallization had been constructed at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Korea. Here, we report the design of the purification process, material recovery, and performance of the NaI powder purification facility.

An experiment to search for dark matter interactions using sodium iodide detectors

Observations of galaxies and primordial radiation suggest that the Universe is made mostly of non-luminous dark matter. Several types of new fundamental particles have been proposed as candidates for dark matter such as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) but no definitive signal has been seen despite concerted efforts by many collaborations. One exception is the much-debated claim by the DAMA collaboration of a statistically significant annual modulation in the event rate of their experiment with a period and phase consistent with that expected from WIMP dark matter. Several groups have been working to develop experiments with the aim of reproducing DAMA's results using the same target medium. Here we report results from the initial operation of the COSINE-100 experiment. COSINE-100 uses sodium iodide as the target medium-the same medium as DAMA-and is designed to carry out a model-independent test of DAMA's claim. Initial data based on the first 59.5 days indicate that there is no excess of events over the expected background, confirming that DAMA's annual modulation signal is in severe tension with results from other experiments under the assumption of dark matter having spin independent interactions and the Standard Halo Model. COSINE-100 is now taking data to study the presence of dark matter-induced annual modulation in the event rate of the sodium iodide detectors.

Improving Combinatorial Ambiguities of ttbar Events Using Neural Networks

We present a method for resolving the combinatorial issues in the \ttbar lepton+jets events occurring at the Tevatron collider. By incorporating multiple information into an artificial neural network, we introduce a novel event reconstruction method for such events. We find that this method significantly reduces the number of combinatorial ambiguities. Compared to the classical reconstruction method, our method provides significantly higher purity with same efficiency. We illustrate the reconstructed observables for the realistic top-quark mass and the forward-backward asymmetry measurements. A Monte Carlo study shows that our method provides meaningful improvements in the top-quark measurements using same amount of data as other methods.

Azimuthal decorrelation in $t\bar{t}$ production at hadron colliders

We present a new observable, $Δϕ$, an azimuthal angle difference between $t$ and $\bar{t}$ quarks in $t\bar{t}$ pair production, at hadron colliders as an interesting probe of the radiative quantum chromodynamics process as well as a high-order correction in the high-mass regime. This variable also enables good discrimination on some new physics models that may explain the forward-backward charge asymmetry of $t\bar{t}$ production measured at the Tevatron. With a reliable estimation of the dataset obtained up to 2011 at the Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider, we present an opportunity for testing the standard model as well as searching new physics models with the $Δϕ$ observable.

Top-Quark Mass Measurement in the Dilepton Channel Using {\it in situ} Jet Energy Scale Calibration

We employ a top-quark mass measurement technique in the dilepton channel with {\it in situ} jet energy scale calibration. Three variables having different jet energy scale dependences are used simultaneously to extract not only the top-quark mass but also the energy scale of the jet from a single likelihood fit. Monte Carlo studies with events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb$^{-1}$ proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV are performed. Our analysis suggests that the overall jet energy scale uncertainty can be significantly reduced and the top-quark mass can be determined with a precision of less than 1 GeV/c$^2$, including jet energy scale uncertainty, at the Large Hadron Collider.

Top quark mass and property measurements at Tevatron

The top quark, discovered in 1995 at the Fermilab Tevatron collider from CDF and D0 experiments, remains by far the most interesting particle to test standard model because of its large mass and unique properties. Having data collected about 10 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity of $p\bar{p}$ collision, both experiments have been studied the top quark in all the possible directions. In this article, we present the recent measurements of the top quark properties from Tevatron including the mass, width, spin correlation, and $W$ boson helicity using $t\bar{t}$ signature.
