Correlation-induced resonances and population switching in a quantum dot coulomb valley

Strong correlation effects on electron transport through a spinless quantum dot are considered. When two single-particle levels in the quantum dot are degenerate, a conserved pseudospin degree of freedom appears for general tunneling matrix elements between the quantum dot and leads. Local fluctuations of the pseudospin in the quantum dot give rise to a pair of asymmetric conductance peaks near the center of a Coulomb valley. An exact relation to the population switching is provided.

Current-Induced Magnetic Domain-Wall Motion by Spin Transfer Torque: Collective Coordinate Approach with Domain-Wall Width Variation

The spin transfer torque generated by a spin-polarized current can induce the shift of the magnetic domain-wall position. In this work, we study theoretically the current-induced domain-wall motion by using the collective coordinate approach [Gen Tatara and Hiroshi Kohno, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 86601 (2004)]. The approach is extended to include not only the domain-wall position and the polarization angle changes but also the domain-wall width variation. It is demonstrated that the width variation affects the critical current.

Superconducting critical temperature and singlet and triplet pair functions of superconductor/normal-metal/ferromagnet trilayers

We calculate the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$, the singlet pair function $Ψ^+(x)$, and triplet pair function $Ψ^-(x)$ of superconductor/normal metal/ferromagnet (S/N/F) trilayers using the linearized Usadel equation near $T_c$. The Green's function method developed by Fominov $et al.$ for the S/F bilayers is extended to the S/N/F trilayer systems. The S of the trilayers is taken to be an s-wave singlet pairing superconductor, and the S/N and N/F interfaces are modeled in terms of the interface resistances parameterized, respectively, by $γ_b^{SN}$ and $γ_b^{NF}$. We present the $T_c$, $Ψ^+(x)$, and $Ψ^-(x)$ for typical $γ_b^{SN}$, $γ_b^{NF}$, and the exchange energy $ E_{ex}$: (a) For a small (large) $γ_b^{NF}$, $T_c$ of S/N/F trilayers, as $d_N$ is increased, increases (decreases) on the length scale of N coherence length $ξ_N$ with a discontinuity at $d_N=0$ due to a boundary condition mismatch. (b) $T_c(d_F)$ shows a non-monotonic behavior like S/F bilayers with a weakened shallow dip. (c) The odd frequency triplet component $Ψ^-(x)$, induced by $E_{ex}$ and proximity effects, has a maximum near the N/F interface and decreases on the length scale $ξ_{ex}$ in F. It also penetrates into N and S regions on the length scale $ξ_N$ and $ξ_S$, respectively. Based on these results we make comments on the experimental observation of the odd triplet components and the recent $T_c$ measurements in Nb/Au/CoFe trilayer systems.

Transmission zero in a quantum dot with strong electron-electron interaction: Perturbative conductance calculations

A pioneering experiment [E. Schuster, E. Buks, M. Heiblum, D. Mahalu, V. Umansky, and Hadas Shtrikman, Nature 385, 417 (1997)] reported the measurement of the transmission phase of an electron traversing a quantum dot and found the intriguing feature of a sudden phase drop in the conductance valleys. Based on the Friedel sum rule for a spinless effective one-dimensional system, it has been previously argued [H.-W. Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2358 (1999)] that the sudden phase drop should be accompanied by the vanishing of the transmission amplitude, or transmission zero. Here we address roles of strong electron-electron interactions on the electron transport through a two-level quantum dot where one level couples with the leads much more strongly than the other level does [P. G. Silvestrov and Y. Imry, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2565 (2000)]. We perform a perturbative conductance calculation with an explicit account of large charging energy and verify that the resulting conductance exhibits transmission zero, in agreement with the analysis based on the Friedel sum rule.

Spin-current-induced charge current

We show that the injection of a pure spin current (not accompanied by charge current) into a ring can induce a circulating charge current in the ring, provided that transport coefficients of the ring are spin-dependent and inhomogeneous. As an example, we consider a hybrid ferromagnet(F)-normal metal(N) ring system and calculate the magnitude of the charge current induced by the pure spin current injection. This phenomenon may have relevance for spintronic applications.

Spin relaxation in mesoscopic superconducting Al wires

We studied the diffusion and the relaxation of the polarized quasiparticle spins in superconductors. To that end, quasiparticles of polarized spins were injected through an interface of a mesoscopic superconducting Al wire in proximity contact with an overlaid ferromagnetic Co wire in the single-domain state. The superconductivity was observed to be suppressed near the spin-injecting interface, as evidenced by the occurrence of a finite voltage for a bias current below the onset of the superconducting transition. The spin diffusion length, estimated from finite voltages over a certain length of Al wire near the interface, was almost temperature independent in the temperature range sufficiently below the superconducting transition but grew as the transition temperature was approached. This temperature dependence suggests that the relaxation of the spin polarization in the superconducting state is governed by the condensation of quasiparticles to the paired state. The spin relaxation in the superconducting state turned out to be more effective than in the normal state.
