Quantum Intelligence Meets BD-RIS-Enabled AmBC: Challenges, Opportunities, and Practical Insights

A beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) is an innovative type of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that has recently been proposed and is considered a revolutionary advancement in wave manipulation. Unlike the mutually disconnected arrangement of elements in traditional RISs, BD-RIS creates cost-effective and simple inter-element connections, allowing for greater freedom in configuring the amplitude and phase of impinging waves. However, there are numerous underlying challenges in realizing the advantages associated with BD-RIS, prompting the research community to actively investigate cutting-edge schemes and algorithms in this direction. Particularly, the passive beamforming design for BD-RIS under specific environmental conditions has become a major focus in this research area. In this article, we provide a systematic introduction to BD-RIS, elaborating on its functional principles concerning architectural design, promising advantages, and classification. Subsequently, we present recent advances and identify a series of challenges and opportunities. Additionally, we consider a specific case study where beamforming is designed using four different algorithms, and we analyze their performance with respect to sum rate and computation cost. To augment the beamforming capabilities in 6G BD-RIS with quantum enhancement, we analyze various hybrid quantum-classical machine learning (ML) models to improve beam prediction performance, employing real-world communication Scenario 8 from the DeepSense 6G dataset. Consequently, we derive useful insights about the practical implications of BD-RIS.

Anti-Malicious ISAC: How to Jointly Monitor and Disrupt Your Foes?

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems are key enablers of future networks but raise significant security concerns. In this realm, the emergence of malicious ISAC systems has amplified the need for authorized parties to legitimately monitor suspicious communication links and protect legitimate targets from potential detection or exploitation by malicious foes. In this paper, we propose a new wireless proactive monitoring paradigm, where a legitimate monitor intercepts a suspicious communication link while performing cognitive jamming to enhance the monitoring success probability (MSP) and simultaneously safeguard the target. To this end, we derive closed-form expressions of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) at the user (UE), sensing access points (S-APs), and an approximating expression of the SINR at the proactive monitor. Moreover, we propose an optimization technique under which the legitimate monitor minimizes the success detection probability (SDP) of the legitimate target, by optimizing the jamming power allocation over both communication and sensing channels subject to total power constraints and monitoring performance requirement. To enhance the monitor's longevity and reduce the risk of detection by malicious ISAC systems, we further propose an adaptive power allocation scheme aimed at minimizing the total transmit power at the monitor while meeting a pre-selected sensing SINR threshold and ensuring successful monitoring. Our numerical results show that the proposed algorithm significantly compromises the sensing and communication performance of malicious ISAC.

Fundamental Limits of Localization with Fluid Antenna Systems: A Fisher Information Analysis

In this letter, we investigate the fundamental limits of localization in fluid antenna systems (FAS) utilizing a Fisher-information-theoretic framework. We develop a unified model to quantify the localization information extractable from time-of-arrival (ToA) and angle-of-arrival (AoA) measurements, explicitly capturing the synthetic aperture effects induced by FAS. Closed-form expressions are derived for the equivalent Fisher information matrix (EFIM) and the corresponding positioning error bound (PEB) in both user-side and base-station (BS)-side FAS configurations. Also, we propose optimal port-selection strategies based on greedy algorithms and convex relaxation to maximize the information gain under a constrained number of activated ports. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed port-selection schemes can substantially tighten the PEB compared with random activation, thereby confirming the strong potential of FAS to enable high-precision localization. These results offer analytical insights and practical design guidelines for FAS-aided positioning in future-generation wireless networks

Multi-Port Selection for FAMA: Massive Connectivity with Fewer RF Chains than Users

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) is an emerging technology in massive access designed to meet the demands of future wireless communication networks by naturally mitigating multiuser interference through the utilization of the fluid antenna system (FAS) at RF-chain-limited mobile device. The transition from single-active-port to multi-active-port on a shared RF chain for slow FAMA can greatly enhance its multiplexing capability but is not well understood. Motivated by this, this paper proposes and studies three port selection methods: the optimal exhaustive-search port selection (EPS) as a performance upper bound, and two suboptimal, low-complexity algorithms, namely incremental port selection (IPS) and decremental port selection (DPS). Then the performance of multi-active-port slow FAMA is analyzed, and the complexity of the proposed methods is compared. Simulation results indicate that the proposed methods outperform current state-of-the-art multi-port FAMA techniques. In particular, IPS achieves near-optimal performance while maintaining manageable computational complexity. This research provides a more general framework for port selection in FAMA systems.

Fluid Antenna System-Enabled UAV-to-Ground Communications

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) have emerged as a revolutionary technology offering enhanced spatial diversity within a compact form factor. Concurrently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are integral to future networks, necessitating channel models that capture both multipath fading and shadowing. This letter presents a novel performance analysis of a UAV-to-ground link, where the receiver is equipped with an $N$-port FAS operating over the challenging double-shadowing fading channel. By adapting a tractable eigenvalue-based approximation for the correlated FAS ports, we derive new analytical expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio statistics, namely the cumulative distribution function and the probability density function. Based on these statistics, we present exact integral expressions for the outage probability, average bit error rate, and average channel capacity. We further derive new, tractable closed-form solutions for the average bit error rate and capacity for the practical dual-rank, independent but non-identically distributed case. Finally, a key asymptotic analysis reveals that the system achieves a multiplicative diversity order of $G_d = M \times d$, which is precisely the product of the FAS spatial rank $M$ and the intrinsic channel diversity order $d$. Simulation results are provided to validate the high accuracy of our entire theoretical framework.

Tri-Hybrid Beamforming Design for Fully-Connected Pinching Antenna Systems

A novel fully-connected (FC) tri-hybrid beamforming (THB) architecture is proposed for pinching antenna systems (PASS). In contrast to conventional sub-connected (SC) PASS, the proposed FC architecture employs a tunable phase-shifter network to interconnect all radio frequency (RF) chains with all waveguides. This facilitates a THB framework that integrates conventional hybrid analog-digital beamforming with pinching beamforming. A weighted sum-rate (WSR) optimization problem is then formulated to jointly optimize the transmit beamformers and pinching antenna (PA) positions. Two algorithms are developed to address this challenging non-convex problem. 1) Fractional programming (FP)-based algorithm: This algorithm directly maximizes the WSR using an FP-based alternating optimization framework. Particularly, a success-history based adaptive differential evolution (SHADE) method is proposed to optimize PA positions, effectively addressing the intractable multimodal objective function. 2) Zero-forcing (ZF)-based algorithm: To reduce design complexity, zero-forcing is employed for transmit beamforming. The PA positions are subsequently optimized to maximize the WSR via a modified SHADE method. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, revealing that the FC-THB PASS achieves WSR comparable to the SC architecture while delivering superior energy efficiency with fewer RF chains.

Towards Quantum Enhanced Adversarial Robustness with Rydberg Reservoir Learning

Quantum reservoir computing (QRC) leverages the high-dimensional, nonlinear dynamics inherent in quantum many-body systems for extracting spatiotemporal patterns in sequential and time-series data with minimal training overhead. Although QRC inherits the expressive capabilities associated with quantum encodings, recent studies indicate that quantum classifiers based on variational circuits remain susceptible to adversarial perturbations. In this perspective, we investigate the first systematic evaluation of adversarial robustness in a QRC based learning model. Our reservoir comprises an array of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms governed by a fixed Hamiltonian, which naturally evolves under complex quantum dynamics, producing high-dimensional embeddings. A lightweight multilayer perceptron serves as the trainable readout layer. We utilize the balanced datasets, namely MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, and Kuzushiji-MNIST, as a benchmark for rigorously evaluating the impact of augmenting the quantum reservoir with a Multilayer perceptron (MLP) in white-box adversarial attacks to assess its robustness. We demonstrate that this approach yields significantly higher accuracy than purely classical models across all perturbation strengths tested. This hybrid approach reveals a new source of quantum advantage and provides practical guidance for the secure deployment of machine learning models on quantum-centric supercomputing with near-term hardware.

Cluster-wise processing in fronthaul-aware cell-free massive MIMO systems

We exploit a general cluster-based network architecture for a fronthaul-limited user-centric cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) system under different degrees of cooperation among the access points (APs) to achieve scalable implementation. In particular, we consider a CF-mMIMO system wherein the available APs are grouped into multiple processing clusters (PCs) to share channel state information (CSI), ensuring that they have knowledge of the CSI for all users assigned to the given cluster for the purposes of designing resource allocation and precoding. We utilize the sum pseudo-SE metric, which accounts for intra-cluster interference and intercluster-leakage, providing a close approximation to the true sum achievable SE. For a given PC, we formulate two optimization problems to maximize the cluster-wise weighted sum pseudo-SE under fronthaul constraints, relying solely on local CSI. These optimization problems are associated with different computational complexity requirements. The first optimization problem jointly designs precoding, user association, and power allocation, and is performed at the small-scale fading time scale. The second optimization problem optimizes user association and power allocation at the large-scale fading time scale. Accordingly, we develop a novel application of modified weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE)-based approach to solve the challenging formulated non-convex mixed-integer problems.

Efficient LLM Inference over Heterogeneous Edge Networks with Speculative Decoding

Large language model (LLM) inference at the network edge is a promising serving paradigm that leverages distributed edge resources to run inference near users and enhance privacy. Existing edge-based LLM inference systems typically adopt autoregressive decoding (AD), which only generates one token per forward pass. This iterative process, compounded by the limited computational resources of edge nodes, results in high serving latency and constrains the system's ability to support multiple users under growing demands. To address these challenges, we propose a speculative decoding (SD)-based LLM serving framework that deploys small and large models across heterogeneous edge nodes to collaboratively deliver inference services. Specifically, the small model rapidly generates draft tokens that the large model verifies in parallel, enabling multi-token generation per forward pass and thus reducing serving latency. To improve resource utilization of edge nodes, we incorporate pipeline parallelism to overlap drafting and verification across multiple inference tasks. Based on this framework, we analyze and derive a comprehensive latency model incorporating both communication and inference latency. Then, we formulate a joint optimization problem for speculation length, task batching, and wireless communication resource allocation to minimize total serving latency. To address this problem, we derive the closed-form solutions for wireless communication resource allocation, and develop a dynamic programming algorithm for joint batching and speculation control strategies. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves lower serving latency compared to AD-based serving systems. In addition, the proposed joint optimization method delivers up to 44.9% latency reduction compared to benchmark schemes.

Large Language Model-Empowered Channel Prediction and Predictive Beamforming for LEO Satellite Communications

Accurate channel prediction and effective beamforming are essential for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications to enhance system capacity and enable high-speed connectivity. Most existing channel prediction and predictive beamforming methods are limited by model generalization capabilities and struggle to adapt to time-varying wireless propagation environments. Inspired by the remarkable generalization and reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs), this work proposes an LLM-based channel prediction framework, namely CPLLM, to forecast future channel state information (CSI) for LEO satellites based on historical CSI data. In the proposed CPLLM, a dedicated CSI encoder is designed to map raw CSI data into the textual embedding space, effectively bridging the modality gap and enabling the LLM to perform reliable reasoning over CSI data. Additionally, a CSI decoder is introduced to simultaneously predict CSI for multiple future time slots, substantially reducing the computational burden and inference latency associated with the inherent autoregressive decoding process of LLMs. Then, instead of training the LLM from scratch, we adopt a parameter-efficient fine-tuning strategy, i.e., LoRA, for CPLLM, where the pretrained LLM remains frozen and trainable low-rank matrices are injected into each Transformer decoder layer to enable effective fine-tuning. Furthermore, we extend CPLLM to directly generate beamforming strategies for future time slots based on historical CSI data, namely BFLLM. This extended framework retains the same architecture as CPLLM, while introducing a dedicated beamforming decoder to output beamforming strategies. Finally, extensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches in channel prediction and predictive beamforming for LEO satellite communications.

RIS-Assisted XL-MIMO for Near-Field and Far-Field Communications

We consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) downlink system, where an XL-MIMO array serves two groups of single-antennas users, namely near-field users (NFUEs) and far-field users (FFUEs). FFUEs are subject to blockage, and their communication is facilitated through the RIS. We consider three precoding schemes at the XL-MIMO array, namely central zero-forcing (CZF), local zero-forcing (LZF) and maximum ratio transmission (MRT). Closed-form expressions for the spectral efficiency (SE) of all users are derived for MRT precoding, while statistical-form expressions are obtained for CZF and LZF processing. A heuristic visibility region (VR) selection algorithm is also introduced to help reduce the computational complexity of the precoding scheme. Furthermore, we devise a two-stage phase shifts design and power control algorithm to maximize the sum of weighted minimum SE of two groups of users with CZF, LZF and MRT precoding schemes. The simulation results indicate that, when equal priority is given to NFUEs and FFUEs, the proposed design improves the sum of the weighted minimum SE by 31.9\%, 37.8\%, and 119.2\% with CZF, LZF, and MRT, respectively, compared to the case with equal power allocation and random phase shifts design. CZF achieves the best performance, while LZF offers comparable results with lower complexity. When prioritizing NFUEs or FFUEs, LZF achieves strong performance for the prioritized group, whereas CZF ensures balanced performance between NFUEs and FFUEs.

Geometric Port Selection in CUMA Systems

Compact ultra-massive antenna-array (CUMA) is a novel multiple access technology built on the fluid antenna system (FAS) concept, offering an improved scheme over fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) that can support massive connectivity on the same physical channel without the need of precoding and interference cancellation. By employing a simple port-selection mechanism that leverages random channel superposition, CUMA can suppress inter-user interference while keeping hardware costs low. Nevertheless, its ad-hoc port-selection strategy leaves considerable room for optimization. In this work, we revisit CUMA and propose two adaptive single-RF port-selection schemes that retain its simplicity while significantly enhancing performance. The first one, referred to as exact optimal half-space (EOHS), dynamically selects the projection direction that maximizes the instantaneous signal build-up across active ports. To reduce complexity while preserving most of the gains, we furthermore introduce a principal component analysis (PCA)-based scheme, which aligns port partitioning with the dominant statistical direction of per-port channel vectors. This method yields a closed-form low-complexity solution, complemented by a tractable analytical framework that provides a closed-form expression for the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) probability density function (PDF). Simulation results corroborate the analysis, demonstrating that both EOHS and PCA consistently outperform conventional CUMA across diverse user densities, port counts, and FAS aperture sizes. Notably, PCA achieves performance close to EOHS at a fraction of the computational cost. The proposed schemes scale effectively to large-user regimes, offering a compelling complexity-performance trade-off for next-generation multiple access systems.

Large Language Model-Empowered Decision Transformer for UAV-Enabled Data Collection

The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reliable and energy-efficient data collection from spatially distributed devices holds great promise in supporting diverse Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Nevertheless, the limited endurance and communication range of UAVs necessitate intelligent trajectory planning. While reinforcement learning (RL) has been extensively explored for UAV trajectory optimization, its interactive nature entails high costs and risks in real-world environments. Offline RL mitigates these issues but remains susceptible to unstable training and heavily rely on expert-quality datasets. To address these challenges, we formulate a joint UAV trajectory planning and resource allocation problem to maximize energy efficiency of data collection. The resource allocation subproblem is first transformed into an equivalent linear programming formulation and solved optimally with polynomial-time complexity. Then, we propose a large language model (LLM)-empowered critic-regularized decision transformer (DT) framework, termed LLM-CRDT, to learn effective UAV control policies. In LLM-CRDT, we incorporate critic networks to regularize the DT model training, thereby integrating the sequence modeling capabilities of DT with critic-based value guidance to enable learning effective policies from suboptimal datasets. Furthermore, to mitigate the data-hungry nature of transformer models, we employ a pre-trained LLM as the transformer backbone of the DT model and adopt a parameter-efficient fine-tuning strategy, i.e., LoRA, enabling rapid adaptation to UAV control tasks with small-scale dataset and low computational overhead. Extensive simulations demonstrate that LLM-CRDT outperforms benchmark online and offline RL methods, achieving up to 36.7\% higher energy efficiency than the current state-of-the-art DT approaches.

Fluid Antenna Systems: A Geometric Approach to Error Probability and Fundamental Limits

The fluid antenna system (FAS) concept is an emerging paradigm that promotes the utilization of the feature of shape and position reconfigurability in antennas to broaden the design of wireless communication systems. This also means that spatial diversity can be exploited in an unconventional way. However, a rigorous framework for error probability analysis of FAS under realistic spatially correlated channels has been lacking. In this paper, we fill this gap by deriving a tight, closed-form asymptotic expression for the symbol error rate (SER) that establishes the fundamental scaling law linking the system's SER to the channel's spatial correlation structure. A key insight of our analysis is that the achievable diversity gain is governed not by the number of antenna ports, but by the channel's effective rank. To find this critical parameter, we propose a novel dual-pronged approach. First of all, we develop a geometry-based algorithm that extracts distinct performance thresholds from the channel's eigenvalue spectrum. Second, we theoretically prove that the effective rank converges to a fundamental limit dictated solely by the antenna's normalized aperture width. We further establish the equivalence between the threshold identified by the geometric algorithm and the derived theoretical limit, providing rigorous validation for the proposed method. Our effective rank model achieves higher accuracy than existing approaches in the literature. Building on this framework, we offer a complete characterization of diversity and coding gains. The analysis leads to a definitive design insight: FAS performance improvements are fundamentally driven by enlarging the antenna's explorable aperture, which increases the effective channel rank, whereas increasing port density within a fixed aperture yields diminishing returns.

Joint AP Selection and Power Allocation for Unicast-Multicast Cell-Free Massive MIMO

Joint unicast and multicast transmissions are becoming increasingly important in practical wireless systems, such as Internet of Things networks. This paper investigates a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output system that simultaneously supports both transmission types, with multicast serving multiple groups. Exact closed-form expressions for the achievable downlink spectral efficiency (SE) of both unicast and multicast users are derived for zero-forcing and maximum ratio precoding designs. Accordingly, a weighted sum SE (SSE) maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the access point (AP) selection and power allocation. The optimization framework accounts for practical constraints, including the maximum transmit power per AP, fronthaul capacity limitations between APs and the central processing unit, and quality-of-service requirements for all users. The resulting non-convex optimization problem is reformulated into a tractable structure, and an accelerated projected gradient (APG)-based algorithm is developed to efficiently obtain near-optimal solutions. As a performance benchmark, a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm is also implemented. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint optimization approach significantly enhances the SSE across various system setups and precoding strategies. In particular, the APG-based algorithm achieves substantial complexity reduction while maintaining competitive performance, making it well-suited for large-scale practical deployments.

How to Proactively Monitor Untrusted Communications with Cell-Free Massive MIMO?

This paper studies a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) proactive monitoring system in which multiple multi-antenna monitoring nodes (MNs) are assigned to either observe the transmissions from an untrusted transmitter (UT) or to jam the reception at the untrusted receiver (UR). We propose an effective channel state information (CSI) acquisition scheme for the monitoring system. In our approach, the MNs leverage the pilot signals transmitted during the uplink and downlink phases of the untrusted link and estimate the effective channels corresponding to the UT and UR via a minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) estimation scheme. We derive new spectral efficiency (SE) expressions for the untrusted link and the monitoring system. For the latter, the SE is derived for two CSI availability cases at the central processing unit (CPU); namely case-1: imperfect CSI knowledge at both MNs and CPU, case-2: imperfect CSI knowledge at the MNs and no CSI knowledge at the CPU. To improve the monitoring performance, we propose a novel joint mode assignment and jamming power control optimization method to maximize the monitoring success probability (MSP) based on the Bayesian optimization framework. Numerical results show that (a) our CF-mMIMO proactive monitoring system relying on the proposed CSI acquisition and optimization approach significantly outperforms the considered benchmarks; (b) the MSP performance of our CF-mMIMO proactive monitoring system is greater than 0.8, regardless of the number of antennas at the untrusted nodes or the precoding scheme for the untrusted transmission link.

Downlink and Uplink ISAC in Continuous-Aperture Array (CAPA) Systems

A continuous-aperture array (CAPA)-based integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework is proposed for both downlink and uplink scenarios. Within this framework, continuous operator-based signal models are employed to describe the sensing and communication processes. The performance of communication and sensing is analyzed using two information-theoretic metrics: the communication rate (CR) and the sensing rate (SR). 1) For downlink ISAC, three continuous beamforming designs are proposed: i) the communications-centric (C-C) design that maximizes the CR, ii) the sensing-centric (S-C) design that maximizes the SR, and iii) the Pareto-optimal design that characterizes the Pareto boundary of the CR-SR region. A low-complexity signal subspace-based approach is proposed to derive the closed-form optimal beamformers for the considered designs. On this basis, closed-form expressions are derived for the achievable CRs and SRs, and the downlink rate region achieved by CAPAs is characterized. 2) For uplink ISAC, the C-C and S-C successive interference cancellation-based methods are proposed to manage inter-functionality interference. Using the subspace approach closed-form expressions for the optimal detectors as well as the achievable CRs and SRs are derived. The uplink SR-CR region is characterized based on the time-sharing technique. Numerical results demonstrate that, for both downlink and uplink, CAPA-based ISAC achieves higher CRs and SRs as well as larger CR-SR regions compared to conventional spatially discrete array-based ISAC.
