Elaborating Higgs to dimuon decay from gluon fusion by decorrelation and jet substructure

Discovery of the Higgs boson decay to dimuon is anticipated soon based on the current evidence. Precise categorization of the events without affecting the invariant mass shape is crucial in the analysis. Decorrelation of the invariant mass and the output of discriminators (the score of discriminators) is essential for consistent and precise analysis. In this paper we use distance correlation as the additional loss function to achieve the decorrelation for discriminators and examine various analysis methods. The analyses with and without jet substructure variables are presented. Adding jet substructure variables considerably improves the significance of the Higgs to dimuon signal from gluon fusion.

Exploring the Universe with Dark Light Scalars

We study the cosmology of the dark sector consisting of (ultra) light scalars. Since the scalar mass is radiatively unstable, a special explanation is required to make the mass much smaller than the UV scale. There are two well-known mechanisms for the origin of scalar mass. The scalar can be identified as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, whose shift symmetry is explicitly broken by non-perturbative corrections, like the axion. Alternatively, it can be identified as a composite particle like the glueball, whose mass is limited by the confinement scale of the theory. In both cases, the scalar can be naturally light, but interaction behavior is quite different. The lighter the axion (glueball), the weaker (stronger) it interacts. We consider the dark axion whose shift symmetry is anomalously broken by the hidden non-abelian gauge symmetry. After the confinement of the gauge group, the dark axion and the dark glueball get masses and both form multicomponent dark matter. We carefully consider the effects of energy flow from the dark gluons to the dark axions and derive the full equations of motion for the background and the perturbed variables. The effect of the dark axion-dark gluon coupling on the evolution of the entropy and the isocurvature perturbations is also clarified. Finally, we discuss the gravo-thermal collapse of the glueball subcomponent dark matter after the halos form, in order to explore the potential to contribute to the formation of seeds for the supermassive black holes observed at high redshifts. With the simplified assumptions, the glueball subcomponent dark matter with the mass of $0.01-0.1 {\rm MeV}$, and the axion main dark matter component with the decay constant $f_a={\cal O}(10^{15}-10^{16}){\rm GeV}$, the mass of ${\cal O}(10^{-14}-10^{-18})\,{\rm eV}$, can provide the hint on the origin of the supermassive black holes at high redshifts.

The Weak Scale as a Trigger

Does the value of the Higgs mass parameter affect the expectation value of local operators in the Standard Model? For essentially all local operators the answer to this question is "no", and this is one of the avatars of the hierarchy problem: nothing is "triggered" when the Higgs mass parameter crosses zero. In this letter, we explore settings in which Higgs mass parameters $can$ act as a "trigger" for some local operators ${\cal O}_T$. In the Standard Model, this happens for ${\cal O}_T = {\rm Tr} (G \tilde G)$. We also introduce a "type-0" two Higgs doublet model, with a $Z_4$ symmetry, for which ${\cal O}_T = H_1 H_2$ is triggered by the Higgs masses, demanding the existence of new Higgs states necessarily comparable to or lighter than the weak scale, with no wiggle room to decouple them whatsoever. Surprisingly, this model is not yet entirely excluded by collider searches, and will be incisively probed by the high-luminosity run of the LHC, as well as future Higgs factories. We also discuss a possibility for using this trigger to explain the origin of the weak scale, invoking a landscape of extremely light, weakly interacting scalars $ϕ_i$, with a coupling to ${\cal O}_T$ needed to make it possible to find vacua with small enough cosmological constant. The weak scale trigger links the tuning of the Higgs mass to that of the cosmological constant, while coherent oscillations of the $ϕ_i$ can constitute dark matter.

Boosting Invisible Higgs Searches by Tagging a Gluon Jet for Gluon Fusion Process

We propose a novel method in that quark-gluon tagging of the jets emitted as initial state radiation (ISR) can boost searches of invisible Higgs from gluon fusion processes against irreducible electroweak vector boson productions. While quark ISR typically takes up a dominant portion than gluon in the background processes mainly by frequent quark-gluon initiated hard scatterings at the LHC, gluon ISR portion in the gluon fusion can be significantly larger in the central region of detector. Focusing on invisible Higgs searches using jet substructure variables capturing the new features, we demonstrate that Higgs from gluon fusion constrains invisible Higgs decays the most, over vector boson fusion traditionally known as the most constraining, and the limit on the branching ratio is significantly improved. We summarize with emphasizing that our method has wider implications in search for new resonances from gluon fusion processes.

Nnaturalness

We present a new solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem. We introduce $N$ copies of the Standard Model with varying values of the Higgs mass parameter. This generically yields a sector whose weak scale is parametrically removed from the cutoff by a factor of $1/\sqrt{N}$. Ensuring that reheating deposits a majority of the total energy density into this lightest sector requires a modification of the standard cosmological history, providing a powerful probe of the mechanism. Current and near-future experiments will explore much of the natural parameter space. Furthermore, supersymmetric completions which preserve grand unification predict superpartners with mass below $m_W \times M_{\text{pl}} / M_{\text{GUT}} \sim 10$ TeV.

Model Independent Constraints on Charges of New Particles

Any particle that is charged under $SU(3)_C$ and $U(1)_{EM}$ can mediate the $gg \rightarrow γγ$ process through loops. Near the threshold for the new particle pair production, gauge boson exchanges necessitate the resummation of ladder diagrams. We discuss the leading log order matching of the one-loop result with non-relativistic effective theory resummed result. We show how the diphoton invariant mass spectrum varies depending on decay width, color representation and electric charge of the new particle. The exclusion limits on the product of $SU(3)_C$ and $U(1)_{EM}$ charges of the new scalar or fermion particle are obtained from current LHC data.

Glue to light signal of a new particle

Any new particle charged under $SU(3)_C$ and carrying electric charge will leave an imprint in the di-photon invariant mass spectrum as it can mediate $gg \to γγ$ process through loops. The combination of properties of loop functions, threshold resummation and gluon pdfs can result in a peak-like feature in the di-photon invariant mass around twice the mass of a given particle even if the particle is short-lived and thus it doesn't form a narrow bound state. Using recent ATLAS analysis, we set upper limits on the combined $SU(3)_C$ and electric charge of new particles and indicate future prospects. We also discuss the possibility that the excess of events in the di-photon invariant mass spectrum around 750 GeV originates from loops of a particle with mass around 375 GeV.

Unstable Particles near Threshold

We explore physics of unstable particles when mother particle mass is around the sum of its daughter particle masses. In this case, the conventional wave function renormalization factor is ill-defined. We propose a simple resolution of the threshold singularity problem which still allows the use of narrow width approximation by defining branching ratio in terms of spectral density. The resonance peak and shape is different for different decay channels and no single decay width can be assigned to the unstable particles. Non-exponential decay happens in all time scales.

Coleman-Weinberg Higgs

We discuss an extension of the standard model by fields not charged under standard model gauge symmetry in which the electroweak symmetry breaking is driven by the Higgs quartic coupling itself without the need for a negative mass term in the potential. This is achieved by a scalar field S with a large coupling to the Higgs field at the electroweak scale which is driven to very small values at high energies by the gauge coupling of a hidden symmetry under which S is charged. This model can remain perturbative all the way to the Planck scale. The Higgs boson is fully SM-like in its couplings to fermions and gauge bosons. However, the effective cubic and quartic self-couplings of the Higgs boson are significantly enhanced.

D0 dimuon charge asymmetry from B_s system with Z' couplings and the recent LHCb result

The D0 collaboration has announced the observation of the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry since 2010, which has more than 3σdeviation from the Standard Model prediction. One of the promising explanation is considering the existence of flavor changing Z' couplings to the b and s quarks which can contribute to the off-diagonal decay width in the B_s - \bar{B}_s mixing. Model construction is highly constrained by the recent LHCb data of 1fb^{-1} integrated luminosity . In this paper, we analyze the experimental constraints in constructing new physics models to explain the dimuon charge asymmetry from the CP violation of the B_s system. We present limits on Z' couplings and show that it is impossible to obtain the 1σrange of the dimuon charge asymmetry without the new contribution in the B_d system. Even with arbitrary contribution in the B_d system, the new couplings must be in the fine tuned region.

New SUSY Thought

New SUSY thought is presented. Maximal stop mixing needed for 125 GeV Higgs is linked to the tachyonic stop at the UV boundary. Large $μ$ does not mean the severe fine tuning if Higgs comes out as a pseudo-Goldstone boson. The small mass of the pseudo-Goldstone Higgs is overcome with extra vector-like fermions needed to explain the Higgs to di-photon rates.

Neutrino Assisted Gauge Mediation

Recent observation shows that the Higgs mass is at around 125 GeV while the prediction of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is below 120 GeV for stop mass lighter than 2 TeV unless the top squark has a maximal mixing. We consider the right-handed neutrino supermultiplets as messengers in addition to the usual gauge mediation to obtain sizeable tri-linear soft parameters $A_t$ needed for the maximal stop mixing. Neutrino messengers can explain the observed Higgs mass for stop mass around 1 TeV. Neutrino assistance can also generate charged lepton flavor violation including $μ\to e γ$ as a possible signature of the neutrino messengers. We consider $S_4$ discrete flavor model and show the relation of the charged lepton flavor violation, $θ_{13}$ of neutrino oscillation and muon $g-2$.

125 GeV Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson in supersymmetry with vector-like matters

We propose a possibility of the 125 GeV Higgs being a pseudo-Goldstone boson in supersymmetry with extra vector-like fermions. Higgs mass is obtained from loops of top quark and vector-like fermions from the global symmetry breaking scale f at around TeV. The mu, Bmu/mu \sim f are generated from the dynamics of global symmetry breaking and the Higgs quartic coupling vanishes at f as tan beta \simeq 1. The relation of msoft \sim $4πM_Z$ with f \sim mu \sim m_soft \sim TeV is obtained and large mu does not cause a fine tuning for the electroweak symmetry breaking. The Higgs to di-photon rate can be enhanced from the loop of uncolored vector-like matters. The stability problem of Higgs potential with vector-like fermions can be nicely cured by the UV completion with the Goldstone picture.

The mu-problem and axion in gauge mediation

We revisit the idea of generating the Higgs mu parameter through a spontaneously broken Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario. For the messenger scale of gauge mediation higher than the PQ scale, the setup naturally generates mu ~ m_soft and the Higgs soft parameter B \leq O(m_soft) with the CP phase of B aligned to the phase of gaugino masses, while giving the PQ scale v_PQ ~ \surd (m_soft Λ), where m_soft denote the gauge-mediated gaugino or sfermion masses and Λ is the cutoff scale which can be identified as the Planck scale or the GUT scale. The PQ sector of the model results in distinctive cosmology including a late thermal inflation. We discuss the issue of dark matter and baryogenesis in the resulting thermal inflation scenario, and find that a right amount of gravitino dark matter can be produced together with a successful Affleck-Dine leptogenesis, when the gravitino mass m_{3/2} = O(100) keV.

Light neutralino dark matter with a very light Higgs for CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA data

Recently, the CoGeNT collaboration reported the WIMP candidate signal events exceeding the known backgrounds where the light WIMP with large cross section is supported. Motivated by this issue, we analyze a light neutralino dark matter scenario with a very light CP-even Higgs mediation in the elastic scattering process, which provides the mass and direct detection cross section to explain the CoGeNT result. To be compatible with the result of LEP experiments, the light CP-even Higgs is favored to be in 9 to 10 GeV. Such a scenario can be realized in the "Beyond the MSSM" context. The relic abundance consistent with the WMAP result can be obtained when twice of neutralino mass is close to the light Higgs mass via the resonance enhancement of the annihilation cross section. As a result, the neutralino mass is predicted to be at around 5 to 6 GeV.

Natural Supersymmetry at the LHC

If the minimal supersymmetric standard model is the solution to the hierarchy problem, the scalar top quark (stop) and the Higgsino should weigh around the electroweak scale such as 200 GeV. A low messenger scale, which results in a light gravitino, is also suggested to suppress the quantum corrections to the Higgs mass parameters. Therefore the minimal model for natural supersymmetry is a system with stop/Higgsino/gravitino whereas other superparticles are heavy. We study the LHC signatures of the minimal system and discuss the discovery potential and methods for the mass measurements.

Dark Matter that can form Dark Stars

The first stars to form in the Universe may be powered by the annihilation of weakly interacting dark matter particles. These so-called dark stars, if observed, may give us a clue about the nature of dark matter. Here we examine which models for particle dark matter satisfy the conditions for the formation of dark stars. We find that in general models with thermal dark matter lead to the formation of dark stars, with few notable exceptions: heavy neutralinos in the presence of coannihilations, annihilations that are resonant at dark matter freeze-out but not in dark stars, some models of neutrinophilic dark matter annihilating into neutrinos only and lighter than about 50 GeV. In particular, we find that a thermal DM candidate in standard Cosmology always forms a dark star as long as its mass is heavier than about 50 GeV and the thermal average of its annihilation cross section is the same at the decoupling temperature and during the dark star formation, as for instance in the case of an annihilation cross section with a non-vanishing s-wave contribution.
