Relaxation of non-order parameter field in directed Ising systems

We investigate the effect of initial conditions on the dynamic exponents of the interacting monomer-monomer model with infinitely many absorbing states in one dimension. This model exhibits a directed Ising (DI) type transition from an active phase into an absorbing phase. In case of the directed percolation universality class, it has been reported that the non-order parameter as well as the order parameter exhibits critical fluctuations, relaxing algebraically to its natural value with the same scaling exponents. We numerically confirm that this is also valid for the DI universality class. We also observe continuously varying dynamic exponents with a linear dependence on the non-order parameter initial density.

Anomalous Roughness in Dimer-Type Surface Growth

We point out how geometric features affect the scaling properties of non-equilibrium dynamic processes, by a model for surface growth where particles can deposit and evaporate only in dimer form, but dissociate on the surface. Pinning valleys (hill tops) develop spontaneously and the surface facets for all growth (evaporation) biases. More intriguingly, the scaling properties of the rough one dimensional equilibrium surface are anomalous. Its width, $W\sim L^α$, diverges with system size $L$, as $α={1/3}$ instead of the conventional universal value $α={1/2}$. This originates from a topological non-local evenness constraint on the surface configurations.

Does hardcore interaction change absorbing type critical phenomena?

It has been generally believed that hardcore interaction is irrelevant to absorbing type critical phenomena because the particle density is so low near an absorbing phase transition. We study the effect of hardcore interaction on the N species branching annihilating random walks with two offspring and report that hardcore interaction drastically changes the absorbing type critical phenomena in a nontrivial way. Through Langevin equation type approach, we predict analytically the values of the scaling exponents, $ν_{\perp} = 2, z = 2, α= 1/2, β= 2$ in one dimension for all N > 1. Direct numerical simulations confirm our prediction. When the diffusion coefficients for different species are not identical, $ν_{\perp}$ and $β$ vary continuously with the ratios between the coefficients.

Particle Dynamics in a Mass-Conserving Coalescence Process

We consider a fully asymmetric one-dimensional model with mass-conserving coalescence. Particles of unit mass enter at one edge of the chain and coalescence while performing a biased random walk towards the other edge where they exit. The conserved particle mass acts as a passive scalar in the reaction process $A+A\to A$, and allows an exact mapping to a restricted ballistic surface deposition model for which exact results exist. In particular, the mass- mass correlation function is exactly known. These results complement earlier exact results for the $A+A\to A$ process without mass. We introduce a comprehensive scaling theory for this process. The exact anaytical and numerical results confirm its validity.

Active Width at a Slanted Active Boundary in Directed Percolation

The width W of the active region around an active moving wall in a directed percolation process diverges at the percolation threshold p_c as W \simeq A ε^{-ν_\parallel} \ln(ε_0/ε), with ε=p_c-p, ε_0 a constant, and ν_\parallel=1.734 the critical exponent of the characteristic time needed to reach the stationary state ξ_\parallel \sim ε^{-ν_\parallel}. The logarithmic factor arises from screening of statistically independent needle shaped sub clusters in the active region. Numerical data confirm this scaling behaviour.

Dynamic behavior of driven interfaces in models with two absorbing states

We study the dynamics of an interface (active domain) between different absorbing regions in models with two absorbing states in one dimension; probabilistic cellular automata models and interacting monomer-dimer models. These models exhibit a continuous transition from an active phase into an absorbing phase, which belongs to the directed Ising (DI) universality class. In the active phase, the interface spreads ballistically into the absorbing regions and the interface width diverges linearly in time. Approaching the critical point, the spreading velocity of the interface vanishes algebraically with a DI critical exponent. Introducing a symmetry-breaking field $h$ that prefers one absorbing state over the other drives the interface to move asymmetrically toward the unpreferred absorbing region. In Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the spreading velocity of this driven interface shows a discontinuous jump at criticality. We explain that this unusual behavior is due to a finite relaxation time in the absorbing phase. The crossover behavior from the symmetric case (DI class) to the asymmetric case (directed percolation class) is also studied. We find the scaling dimension of the symmetry-breaking field $y_h = 1.21(5)$.

Interacting Monomer-Dimer Model with Infinitely Many Absorbing States

We study a modified version of the interacting monomer-dimer (IMD) model that has infinitely many absorbing (IMA) states. Unlike all other previously studied models with IMA states, the absorbing states can be divided into two equivalent groups which are dynamically separated infinitely far apart. Monte Carlo simulations show that this model belongs to the directed Ising universality class like the ordinary IMD model with two equivalent absorbing states. This model is the first model with IMA states which does not belong to the directed percolation (DP) universality class. The DP universality class can be restored in two ways, i.e., by connecting the two equivalent groups dynamically or by introducing a symmetry-breaking field between the two groups.

Directed Ising type dynamic preroughening transition in one dimensional interfaces

We present a realization of directed Ising (DI) type dynamic absorbing state phase transitions in the context of one-dimensional interfaces, such as the relaxation of a step on a vicinal surface. Under the restriction that particle deposition and evaporation can only take place near existing kinks, the interface relaxes into one of three steady states: rough, perfectly ordered flat (OF) without kinks, or disordered flat (DOF) with randomly placed kinks but in perfect up-down alternating order. A DI type dynamic preroughening transition takes place between the OF and DOF phases. At this critical point the asymptotic time evolution is controlled not only by the DI exponents but also by the initial condition. Information about the correlations in the initial state persists and changes the critical exponents.

Critical phenomena of nonequilibrium dynamical systems with two absorbing states

We study nonequilibrium dynamical models with two absorbing states: interacting monomer-dimer models, probabilistic cellular automata models, nonequilibrium kinetic Ising models. These models exhibit a continuous phase transition from an active phase into an absorbing phase which belongs to the universality class of the models with the parity conservation. However, when we break the symmetry between the absorbing states by introducing a symmetry-breaking field, Monte Carlo simulations show that the system goes back to the conventional directed percolation universality class. In terms of domain wall language, the parity conservation is not affected by the presence of the symmetry-breaking field. So the symmetry between the absorbing states rather than the conservation laws plays an essential role in determining the universality class. We also perform Monte Carlo simulations for the various interface dynamics between different absorbing states, which yield new universal dynamic exponents. With the symmetry-breaking field, the interface moves, in average, with a constant velocity in the direction of the unpreferred absorbing state and the dynamic scaling exponents apparently assume trivial values. However, we find that the hyperscaling relation for the directed percolation universality class is restored if one focuses on the dynamics of the interface on the side of the preferred absorbing state only.

Critical behavior of an absorbing phase transition in an interacting monomer-dimer model

We study a monomer-dimer model with repulsive interactions between the same species in one dimension. With infinitely strong interactions the model exhibits a continuous transition from a reactive phase to an inactive phase with two equivalent absorbing states. Static and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations show that the critical behavior at the transition is different from the conventional directed percolation universality class but is consistent with that of the models with the mass conservation of modulo 2. The values of static and dynamic critical exponents are compared with those of other models. We also show that the directed percolation universality class is recovered when a symmetry-breaking field is introduced.

Dynamic scaling behavior of an interacting monomer--dimer model

We study the dynamic scaling behavior of a monomer-dimer model with repulsive interactions between the same species in one dimension. With infinitely strong interactions the model exhibits a continuous transition from a reactive phase to an inactive phase with two equivalent absorbing states. This transition does not belong to the conventional directed percolation universality class. The values of dynamic scaling exponents are estimated by Monte Carlo simulations for two distinct initial configurations, one near an absorbing state and the other with an interface between two different absorbing states. We confirm that the critical behavior is consistent with that of the models with the mass conservation of modulo 2.

Reentrant phase diagram of branching annihilating random walks with one and two offsprings

We investigate the phase diagram of branching annihilating random walks with one and two offsprings in one dimension. A walker can hop to a nearest neighbor site or branch with one or two offsprings with relative ratio. Two walkers annihilate immediately when they meet. In general, this model exhibits a continuous phase transition from an active state into the absorbing state (vacuum) at a finite hopping probability. We map out the phase diagram by Monte Carlo simulations which shows a reentrant phase transition from vacuum to an active state and finally into vacuum again as the relative rate of the two-offspring branching process increases. This reentrant property apparently contradicts the conventional wisdom that increasing the number of offsprings will tend to make the system more active. We show that the reentrant property is due to the static reflection symmetry of two-offspring branching processes and the conventional wisdom is recovered when the dynamic reflection symmetry is introduced instead of the static one.

Exact solutions of a restricted ballistic deposition model on a one-dimensional staircase

Surface structure of a restricted ballistic deposition(RBD) model is examined on a one-dimensional staircase with free boundary conditions. In this model, particles can be deposited only at the steps of the staircase. We set up recurrence relations for the surface fluctuation width $W$ using generating function method. Steady-state solutions are obtained exactly given system size $L$. In the infinite-size limit, $W$ diverges as $L^α$ with the scaling exponent $α=\frac{1}{2}$. The dynamic exponent $β$ $(W\sim t^β)$ is also found to be $\frac{1}{2}$ by solving the recurrence relations numerically. This model can be viewed as a simple variant of the model which belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class $(α_{KPZ}= \frac{1}{2} , β_{KPZ}=\frac{1}{3})$. Comparing its deposition time scale with that of the single-step model, we argue that $β$ must be the same as $β_{KPZ}/(1-β_{KPZ})$, which is consistent with our finding.

The three-state Potts model on a triangular lattice

We study the phase diagram of the three-state Potts model on a triangular lattice with general interactions (ferro/antiferromagnetic) between nearest neighbor spins. When the interactions along two lattice-vector directions are antiferromagnetic and infinitely strong, this model becomes equivalent to a six-vertex model and exhibits a first-order (KDP) transition from an ordered phase into a critical phase. Comparing the excitations occurred by relaxing the restriction of infinite-strength interactions and those in the eight-vertex model, we analytically obtain the critical index for those excitations and demonstrate the existence of a critical phase for the case of finite antiferromagnetic interactions in two directions and ferromagnetic interactions in the other direction. When the interactions are antiferromagnetic in all three directions, Monte Carlo simulations show that a first-order line emerges from the KDP point and separates completely an ordered phase and a disordered phase. Along the special line where all three antiferromagnetic interactions have the same strength, the cell-spin analysis reveals that the symmetry of the ground states is dual to the symmetry of the $n=3$ ferromagnetic cubic model which is known to exhibit a first-order phase transition.
