IdeaBlocks: Expressing and Reusing Divergent Intents for Graphic Design Exploration using Generative AI

While designers increasingly leverage Generative AI for divergent exploration, current interaction is optimized for convergent refinement, forcing users to specify fixed targets rather than open-ended search spaces. Based on a formative study (N=7), we define the anatomy of Divergent Intent, comprising property, direction, and range, and identified two critical barriers: the lack of mechanisms to explicitly shape the parametric boundaries of exploration and the difficulty of reusing successful search strategies. We present IdeaBlocks, where users can modularize divergent intents into Exploration Blocks. Users can reuse prior intents at multiple levels (block, path, and project) with options for literal or context-adaptive reuse. In our comparative study (N=12), participants using IdeaBlocks explored 2.13 times more images with 12.5% greater visual diversity than the baseline, demonstrating how structured intent expression and reuse support effective divergence. A three-day deployment study (N=6) further revealed how different reuse mechanisms allowed distinct creative strategies, offering design implications for future intent-aware creativity supports.

ViscNet: Vision-Based In-line Viscometry for Fluid Mixing Process

Viscosity measurement is essential for process monitoring and autonomous laboratory operation, yet conventional viscometers remain invasive and require controlled laboratory environments that differ substantially from real process conditions. We present a computer-vision-based viscometer that infers viscosity by exploiting how a fixed background pattern becomes optically distorted as light refracts through the mixing-driven, continuously deforming free surface. Under diverse lighting conditions, the system achieves a mean absolute error of 0.113 in log m2 s^-1 units for regression and reaches up to 81% accuracy in viscosity-class prediction. Although performance declines for classes with closely clustered viscosity values, a multi-pattern strategy improves robustness by providing enriched visual cues. To ensure sensor reliability, we incorporate uncertainty quantification, enabling viscosity predictions with confidence estimates. This stand-off viscometer offers a practical, automation-ready alternative to existing viscometry methods.

Expandora: Broadening Design Exploration with Text-to-Image Model

Broad exploration of references is critical in the visual design process. While text-to-image (T2I) models offer efficiency and customization of exploration, they often limit support for divergence in exploration. We conducted a formative study (N=6) to investigate the limitations of current interaction with the T2I model for broad exploration and found that designers struggle to articulate exploratory intentions and manage iterative, non-linear workflows. To address these challenges, we developed Expandora. Users can specify their exploratory intentions and desired diversity levels through structured input, and using an LLM-based pipeline, Expandora generates tailored prompt variations. The results are displayed in a mindmap-like interface that encourages non-linear workflows. A user study (N=8) demonstrated that Expandora significantly increases prompt diversity, the number of prompts users tried within a given time, and user satisfaction compared to the baseline. Nonetheless, its limitations in supporting convergent thinking suggest opportunities for holistically improving creative processes.
