Supersolid formation in a dipolar condensate by roton instability

We characterize the role of the roton instability in the formation of a supersolid state of an elongated dipolar condensate, following a quench of the contact interactions across the superfluid-supersolid transition, as observed in recent experiments. We perform dynamical simulations by means of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation including quantum corrections, for different final values of the $s-$wave scattering length. The corresponding excitation spectrum is computed using an effective one-dimensional description, revealing that the calculated growth rates of the unstable roton mode accurately reproduce the observed behavior. Our results provide valuable insights regarding the formation time of the supersolid and its scaling behavior with respect to the $s$-wave scattering length.

Crossing the superfluid-supersolid transition of an elongated dipolar condensate

We provide a theoretical characterization of the dynamical crossing of the superfluid-supersolid phase transition for a dipolar condensate confined in an elongated trap, as observed in the recent experiment by G. Biagioni et al. [Phys. Rev. X 12, 021019 (2022)]. By means of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii theory, which includes the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum fluctuation correction, we first analyze the ground state configurations of the system as a function of the interparticle scattering length, for both trap configurations employed in the experiment. Then, we discuss the effects of the ramp velocity, by which the scattering length is tuned across the transition, on the collective excitations of the system in both the superfluid and supersolid phases. We find that, when the transverse confinement is sufficiently strong and the transition has a smooth (continuous) character, the system essentially displays a (quasi) 1D behavior, its excitation dynamics being dominated by the axial breathing modes. Instead, for shallower transverse trapping, when the transition becomes discontinuous, the collective excitations of the supersolid display a coupling with the transverse modes, signalling the onset of a dimensional crossover.

Quantized Single-Ion-Channel Hodgkin-Huxley Model for Quantum Neurons

The Hodgkin-Huxley model describes the behavior of the cell membrane in neurons, treating each part of it as an electric circuit element, namely capacitors, memristors, and voltage sources. We focus on the activation channel of potassium ions, due to its simplicity, while keeping most of the features displayed by the original model. This reduced version is essentially a classical memristor, a resistor whose resistance depends on the history of electric signals that have crossed it, coupled to a voltage source and a capacitor. Here, we will consider a quantized Hodgkin-Huxley model based on a quantum memristor formalism. We compare the behavior of the membrane voltage and the potassium channel conductance, when the circuit is subjected to AC sources, in both classical and quantum realms. Numerical simulations show an expected adaptation of the considered channel conductance depending on the signal history in all regimes. Remarkably, the computation of higher moments of the voltage manifest purely quantum features related to the circuit zero-point energy. Finally, we study the implementation of the Hodgkin-Huxley quantum memristor as an asymmetric rf SQUID in superconducting circuits. This study may allow the construction of quantum neuron networks inspired in the brain function, as well as the design of neuromorphic quantum architectures for quantum machine learning.

Quantum work statistics, Loschmidt echo and information scrambling

A universal relation is established between the quantum work probability distribution of an isolated driven quantum system and the Loschmidt echo dynamics of a two-mode squeezed state. When the initial density matrix is canonical, the Loschmidt echo of the purified double thermofield state provides a direct measure of information scrambling and can be related to the analytic continuation of the partition function. Information scrambling is then described by the quantum work statistics associated with the time-reversal operation on a single copy, associated with the sudden negation of the system Hamiltonian.

Advanced-Retarded Differential Equations in Quantum Photonic Systems

We propose the realization of photonic circuits whose dynamics is governed by advanced-retarded differential equations. Beyond their mathematical interest, these photonic configurations enable the implementation of quantum feedback and feedforward without requiring any intermediate measurement. We show how this protocol can be applied to implement interesting delay effects in the quantum regime, as well as in the classical limit. Our results elucidate the potential of the protocol as a promising route towards integrated quantum control systems on a chip.
