Dynamical reconstruction of SPARC galactic halos within self-interacting fuzzy dark matter

Fuzzy Dark Matter with non-zero quartic self-interaction (SFDM) is shown to be a viable model for simultaneously fitting 17 dark-matter-dominated galaxies from the SPARC database with a single $(m,g)$ point in the space of boson masses and self-coupling constants: $\log_{10}\left(m \,[\mathrm{eV}/c^2] \right) = \log_{10}(1.98)-22^{+0.8}_{-0.6}$ and $\log_{10}\left(g \, [\mathrm{eV \, m}^3/kg] \right) = \log_{10}(9.08)-10^{+0.4}_{-1.2}$. This is based on the combination of an appropriately constructed static super-Gaussian profile for the inner galactic core (`soliton') region, and a Navarro-Frenk-White profile for the surrounding halo region. The explicit identification of a non-zero interaction strength may resolve issues of inconsistent constraints in non-interacting FDM. Our identification of these parameters enables the explicit {\em dynamical} reconstruction of potential host halos for such galaxies through numerical solution of the SFDM equations; we outline a {proof-of-principle procedure via merger simulations} for two galaxies (UGCA444, UGC07866), and show that this yields viable rotation curves over a dynamical period of ${\cal O}(1) \, Gyr$.

Fuzzy dark matter halos with repulsive self-interactions: coherent soliton and halo vortex network with moderate self-coupling

We examine the impact of moderate repulsive self-interactions on fuzzy dark matter halos generated by merging smaller Gaussian density concentrations. We study the size of the core and the granules, the spatial dependence of the field's coherence, the turbulent vortex tangle and the oscillation frequency of the central soliton, covering the range from quantum-pressure-dominated to self-interaction-dominated stabilisation of the solitonic core. For the probed self-coupling strengths $g$ and with a fixed initial configuration, mergers with increasing $g$ result in cores with increased size and a reduced central density, oscillating with decreased frequency, in accordance with expectations from the study of isolated Self-interacting Fuzzy Dark Matter (SFDM) solitons. By contrast, the characteristic granule size and typical inter-vortex distances in the surrounding halo are only mildly affected, growing much less relative to the core. The total length of the vortex network, although less robust, shows no signs of decay over our simulation timescales. The generated halos therefore develop central self-interaction-dominated cores, but with the outer halos still supported by quantum-pressure and classical kinetic energy in equipartition as in the non-interacting case. Furthermore, measures of coherence of the field clearly separate the condensed core, identified via the Penrose-Onsager (largest eigenvalue) mode of the entire classical field, from the surrounding quasi-coherent halo. Unlike the $g=0$ case, we observe a relative increase of incoherent fluctuations coexisting with the coherent mode at the centre of the halo with increasing $g$, a phenomenon also observed in laboratory condensates at non-zero temperature.

Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with Quantic Tensor Trains: Ground States and Nonlinear Dynamics

We develop a tensor network framework based on the quantic tensor train (QTT) format to efficiently solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), which governs Bose-Einstein condensates under mean-field theory. By adapting time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) and gradient descent methods, we accurately handle the GPE's nonlinearities within the QTT structure. Our approach enables high-resolution simulations with drastically reduced computational cost. We benchmark ground states and dynamics of BECs--including vortex lattice formation and breathing modes--demonstrating superior performance over conventional grid-based methods and stable long-time evolution due to saturating bond dimensions. This establishes QTT as a powerful tool for nonlinear quantum simulations.

Generation and Coherent Control of Dark-State Spatial Modes

The generation and dynamic control of the spatial mode of the dark-state polarization using electromagnetically induced transparency are theoretically investigated. We demonstrate that a combination of synthetic scalar and vector potentials can be employed to engineer discrete spatial modes of the dark state polariton, enabling quantum interference among these modes. We verify this concept by showing the Rabi oscillation between two spatial modes and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage among $Λ$-type three modes. Our approach allows for the reallocation of stored photonic data from one location to another, presenting potential applications such as photonic memory optimization and retrieved light modulation.

Vortex Avalanches and Collective Motion in Neutron Stars

We simulate the dynamics of about 600 quantum vortices in a spinning-down cylindrical container using a Gross--Pitaevskii model. For the first time, we find convincing spatial-temporal evidence of avalanching behaviour resulting from vortex depinning and collective motion. During a typical avalanche, about 10 to 20 vortices exit the container in a short period, producing a glitch in the superfluid angular momentum and a localised void in the vorticity. After the glitch, vortices continue to depin and circulate around the vorticity void in a similar manner to that seen in previous point-vortex simulations. We present evidence of collective vortex motion throughout this avalanche process. We also show that the effective Magnus force can be used to predict when and where avalanches will occur. Lastly, we comment on the challenge of extrapolating these results to conditions in real neutron stars, which contain many orders of magnitude more vortices.

Virialized Profiles and Oscillations of Self-interacting Fuzzy Dark Matter Solitons

We investigate the effect of self-interactions on the shape and oscillations of the solitonic core profile of condensed fuzzy dark matter systems without the backdrop of a halo, revealing universal features in terms of an appropriately scaled interaction strength characterizing the crossover between the weakly- and strongly-interacting regimes. Our semi-analytical results are further confirmed by spherically symmetric simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson equations. Inverting our obtained relations, we highlight a degeneracy that could significantly affect constraints on the boson mass in the presence of repulsive boson self-interactions and propose the simultaneous extraction of static and dynamical solitonic features as a way to uniquely constrain both the boson mass and self-interactions.

Vortex depinning in a two-dimensional superfluid

We employ the Gross--Pitaevskii theory to model a quantized vortex depinning from a small obstacle in a two-dimensional superfluid due to an imposed background superfluid flow. We find that, when the flow's velocity exceeds a critical value, the vortex drifts orthogonally to the flow before subsequently moving parallel to it away from the pinning site. The motion of the vortex around the pinning site is also accompanied by an emission of a spiral-shaped sound pulse. Through simulations, we present a phase diagram of the critical flow velocity for vortex depinning together with an empirical formula that illustrates how the critical velocity increases with the height and width of the pinning site. By employing a variety of choices of initial and boundary conditions, we are able to obtain lower and upper bounds on the critical velocity and demonstrate the robustness of these results.

Coherent and incoherent structures in fuzzy dark matter halos

We show that fuzzy dark matter halos exhibit spatial differentiation in the degree of coherence of the field configuration, ranging from completely coherent in the central solitonic core to incoherent outside it, with a crossover region in between the two phases. The solitonic core is indeed a pure condensate which overlaps almost perfectly with the Penrose-Onsager mode corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of the one-particle density matrix. The virialized outer halo surrounding the core exhibits no clear coherence as a whole upon radial and temporal averaging. However, when viewed locally and for short times, it can be described as a collection of quasi-condensate lumps exhibiting locally suppressed fluctuations which can be identified with the structures commonly referred to as granules. Phase coherence across the entire halo is inhibited by a dynamically evolving tangled web of vortices separating the localized quasi-condensate regions. Moreover, the dimensionless phase-space density in the outer halo drops significantly below its value at the core. We further examine the dynamics of this spatial structure and find that the oscillations of the core can be accurately described by two time-dependent parameters respectively characterizing the size of the core, $r_c(t)$, and the crossover region, $r_t(t)$. For the halos produced in our merger simulations this feature is reflected in the (anti-)correlated oscillation of the peak value of the field configuration's power-spectrum. The turbulent vortex tangle of the virialized halo appears to reach a quasi-equilibrium state over probed timescales, with the incompressible component of the kinetic energy exhibiting a characteristic $k^{-3}$ tail in its spectrum, indicative of a $ρ\sim r^2$ density profile around the quantum vortex cores. Comparison of the peak wavenumbers in the corresponding power-spectra shows that the inter-vortex...

Phase transition dimensionality crossover from two to three dimensions in a trapped ultracold atomic Bose gas

The equilibrium properties of a weakly interacting atomic Bose gas across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase transitions are numerically investigated through a dimensionality crossover from two to three dimensions. The crossover is realised by confining the gas in an experimentally feasible hybridised trap which provides homogeneity along the planar xy-directions through a box potential in tandem with a harmonic transverse potential along the transverse z-direction. The dimensionality is modified by varying the frequency of the harmonic trap from tight to loose transverse trapping. Our findings, based on a stochastic (projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation, showcase a continuous shift in the character of the phase transition from BKT to BEC, and a monotonic increase of the identified critical temperature as a function of dimensionality, with the strongest variation exhibited for small chemical potential values up to approximately twice the transverse confining potential

Synthetic gauge potentials for the dark state polaritons in atomic media

The quest of utilizing neutral particles to simulate the behaviour of charged particles in a magnetic field makes the generation of artificial magnetic field of great interest. The previous and the only proposal for the production of synthetic magnetic field for the dark state polaritons in electromagnetically induced transparency invokes the mechanical rotation of a sample. Here, we put forward an optical scheme to generate effective gauge potentials for stationary-light polaritons. 5To demonstrate the capabilities of our approach, we present recipes for having dark state polaritons in degenerate Landau levels and in driven quantum harmonic oscillator. Our scheme paves a novel way towards the investigation of the bosonic analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect by electromagnetically induced transparency.

Dynamics of a degenerate Cs-Yb mixture with attractive interspecies interactions

We probe the collective dynamics of a quantum degenerate Bose-Bose mixture of Cs and $^{174}$Yb with attractive interspecies interactions. Specifically, we excite vertical center of mass oscillations of the Cs condensate, and observe significant damping for the Cs dipole mode, due to the rapid transfer of energy to the larger Yb component, and the ensuing acoustic dissipation. Numerical simulations based on coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations provide excellent agreement, and additionally reveal the possibility of late-time revivals (beating) which are found to be highly sensitive to the Cs and Yb atom number combinations. By further tuning the interaction strength of Cs using a broad Feshbach resonance, we explore the stability of the degenerate mixture, and observe collapse of the Cs condensate mediated by the attractive Cs-Yb interaction when $a_{\mathrm{Cs}}<50 \, a_0$, well above the single-species collapse threshold, in good agreement with simulations.

Phase Diagram of Solitons in the Polar Phase of a Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate

We theoretically study the structure of a stationary soliton in the polar phase of spin-1 Bose--Einstein condensate in the presence of quadratic Zeeman effect at zero temperature. The phase diagram of such solitons is mapped out by finding the states of minimal soliton energy in the defining range of polar phase. The states are assorted into normal, anti-ferromagnetic, broken-axisymmetry, and ferromagnetic phases according to the number and spin densities in the core. The order of phase transitions between different solitons and the critical behaviour of relevant continuous transitions are proved within the mean-field theory.

Kibble-Zurek Dynamics in a Trapped Ultracold Bose Gas

The dynamical evolution of an inhomogeneous ultracold atomic gas quenched at different controllable rates through the Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition is studied numerically in the premise of a recent experiment in an anisotropic harmonic trap. Our findings based on the stochastic (projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation are shown to be consistent at early times with the predictions of the homogeneous Kibble-Zurek mechanism. This is demonstrated by collapsing the early dynamical evolution of densities, spectral functions and correlation lengths for different quench rates, based on an appropriate characterization of the distance to criticality felt by the quenched system. The subsequent long-time evolution, beyond the identified dynamical critical region, is also investigated by looking at the behaviour of the density wavefront evolution and the corresponding phase ordering dynamics.

Hidden long-range order in a spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional Bose gas

A spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas is shown to simultaneously possess quasi and true long-range order in the total and relative phase sectors, respectively. The total phase undergoes a Berenzinskii- Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to a low temperature phase with quasi long-range order, as expected for a two- dimensional quantum gas. Additionally, the relative phase undergoes an Ising-type transition building up true long-range order, which is induced by the anisotropic spin-orbit coupling. Based on the Bogoliubov approach, expressions for the total- and relative-phase fluctuations are derived analytically for the low temperature regime. Numerical simulations of the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation (SPGPE) give a good agreement with the analytical predictions.

Phase Separation and Dynamics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

The miscibility of two interacting quantum systems is an important testing ground for the understanding of complex quantum systems. Two-component Bose-Einstein condensates enable the investigation of this scenario in a particularly well controlled setting. In a homogeneous system, the transition between mixed and separated phases is fully characterised by a `miscibility parameter', based on the ratio of intra- to inter-species interaction strengths. Here we show, however, that this parameter is no longer the optimal one for trapped gases, for which the location of the phase boundary depends critically on atom numbers. We demonstrate how monitoring of damping rates and frequencies of dipole oscillations enables the experimental mapping of the phase diagram by numerical implementation of a fully self-consistent finite-temperature kinetic theory for binary condensates. The change in damping rate is explained in terms of surface oscillation in the immiscible regime, and counterflow instability in the miscible regime, with collisions becoming only important in the long time evolution.

Unconventional Bose-Einstein Condensation in a System of Two-species Bosons in the $p$-orbital Bands of a Bipartite Lattice

In the context of Gross-Pitaevskii theory, we investigate the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations in the two-species mixture with $p$-wave symmetry in the second band of a bipartite optical lattice. A new imaginary-time propagation method is developed to numerically determine the $p$-orbital condensation. Different from the single-species case, the two-species boson mixture exhibits two non-equivalent complex condensates in the intraspecies-interaction-dominating regime, exhibiting the vortex-antivortex lattice configuration in the charge and spin channels, respectively. When the interspecies interaction is tuned across the SU(2) invariant point, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition toward a checkerboard-like spin density wave state with a real-valued condensate wavefunction. The influence of lattice asymmetry on the quantum phase transition is addressed. Finally, we present a phase-sensitive measurement scheme for experimentally detecting the UBEC in our model.

Oscillons in coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Long-lived, spatially localized, and temporally oscillating nonlinear excitations are predicted by numerical simulation of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. These oscillons closely resemble the time-periodic breather solutions of the sine-Gordon equation but decay slowly by radiating Bogoliubov phonons. Their time-dependent profile is closely matched with solutions of the sine-Gordon equation, which emerges as an effective field theory for the relative phase of two linearly coupled Bose fields in the weak-coupling limit. For strong coupling the long-lived oscillons persist and involve both relative and total phase fields. The oscillons decay via Bogoliubov phonon radiation that is increasingly suppressed for decreasing oscillon amplitude. Possibilities for creating oscillons are addressed in atomic gas experiments by collision of oppositely charged Bose-Josephson vortices and direct phase imprinting.
