Mott-Hubbard Transition and Anderson Localization: Generalized Dynamical Mean-Field Theory Approach

Density of states, dynamic (optical) conductivity and phase diagram of strongly correlated and strongly disordered paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model are analyzed within the generalized dynamical mean field theory (DMFT+Σapproximation). Strong correlations are accounted by DMFT, while disorder is taken into account via the appropriate generalization of self-consistent theory of localization. The DMFT effective single impurity problem is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG) and we consider the three-dimensional system with semi-elliptic density of states. Correlated metal, Mott insulator and correlated Anderson insulator phases are identified via the evolution of density of states and dynamic conductivity, demonstrating both Mott-Hubbard and Anderson metal-insulator transition and allowing the construction of complete zero-temperature phase diagram of Anderson-Hubbard model. Rather unusual is the possibility of disorder induced Mott insulator to metal transition.

Electronic Properties of the Semiconductor RuIn$_3$

Temperature dependent measurements of the resistivity on RuIn$_3$ single crystals show a semiconducting behaviour, in contrast to previously published results. In the high temperature range the semiconducting gap was measured to be $0.4-0.5$eV. We observe an anisotropy of the resistivity along [110] and [001] orientations of the tetragonal single crystals. At low temperatures two activation energies of impurities were estimated to 1meV and 10meV. The temperature dependence of the specific heat and the band structure calculations provide also a semiconducting behaviour of RuIn$_3$.

Pseudogaps in Strongly Correlated Metals: Optical Conductivity within the Generalized Dynamical Mean-Field Theory Approach

Optical conductivity of the weakly doped two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice with nearest and next nearest hoppings is calculated within the generalized dynamical-mean field (DMFT+Σ_p) approach which includes correlation length scale ξinto the standard DMFT equations via the momentum dependent self-energy Σ_p, with full account of appropriate vertex corrections. This approach takes into consideration non-local dynamical correlations induced e.g. by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, which (at high enough temperatures) can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length ξ. The effective single impurity problem is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). We consider both the case of correlated metal with the bandwidth W<=U and that of doped Mott insulator with U>>W (U - value of local Hubbard interaction). Optical conductivity calculated within DMFT+Σ_p demonstrates typical pseudogap behavior within the quasiparticle band in qualitative agreement with experiments in copper oxide superconductors. For large values of U pseudogap anomalies are effectively suppressed.

Pseudogap behaviour in Bi2212: Results of Generalized DMFT Approach

To describe pseudogap regime in Bi2212 we employ novel generalized ab initio LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k hybrid scheme. This scheme is based on the strategy of one of the most powerfull computational tool for real correlated materials LDA+DMFT. Here the LDA+DMFT equations are supplied by an additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sigma_k in the spirit of our recently proposed DMFT+Sigma_k approach, accounting for pseudogap fluctuations. In the present model Sigma_k describes non-local correlations induced by short-ranged collective Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The effective single impurity problem of the DMFT is solved by NRG. Material specific model parameters for effective x2-y2 orbital of Cu-3d shell of Bi2212 compound, e.g. hopping integrals, local Coulomb interaction U and pseudogap potential Delta were obtained within LDA and LDA+DMFT. We report theoretical LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k quasiparticle bands dispersion and damping, Fermi surface renormalization, momentum anisotropy of (quasi) static scattering, densities of states, spectral densities and angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra accounting for pseudogap and bilayer splitting effects for normal (slightly) underdoped Bi2212 (delta=0.15). We show that LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k successfully describes strong (pseudogap) scattering close to Brillouin zone boundaries. Our calculated LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k Fermi surfaces and ARPES spectra in presence of the pseudogap fluctuations are almost insensitive to the bilayer splitting strength. The LDA-calculated value of bilayer splitting is found to be rather small to describe experimentally observed peak-dip-hump structure.

Kinks in the dispersion of strongly correlated electrons

The properties of condensed matter are determined by single-particle and collective excitations and their interactions. These quantum-mechanical excitations are characterized by an energy E and a momentum \hbar k which are related through their dispersion E_k. The coupling of two excitations may lead to abrupt changes (kinks) in the slope of the dispersion. Such kinks thus carry important information about interactions in a many-body system. For example, kinks detected at 40-70 meV below the Fermi level in the electronic dispersion of high-temperature superconductors are taken as evidence for phonon or spin-fluctuation based pairing mechanisms. Kinks in the electronic dispersion at binding energies ranging from 30 to 800 meV are also found in various other metals posing questions about their origins. Here we report a novel, purely electronic mechanism yielding kinks in the electron dispersions. It applies to strongly correlated metals whose spectral function shows well separated Hubbard subbands and central peak as, for example, in transition metal-oxides. The position of the kinks and the energy range of validity of Fermi-liquid (FL) theory is determined solely by the FL renormalization factor and the bare, uncorrelated band structure. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments at binding energies outside the FL regime can thus provide new, previously unexpected information about strongly correlated electronic systems.

Evidence for strong electronic correlations in the spectra of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The importance of electronic correlation effects in the layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is evidenced. To this end we use state-of-the-art LDA+DMFT (Local Density Approximation + Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) in the basis of Wannier functions to compute spectral functions and the quasiparticle dispersion of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The spectra are found to be in good agreement with various spectroscopic experiments. We also calculate the $\textbf{k}$-dependence of the quasiparticle bands and compare the results with new angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data. Two typical manifestations of strong Coulomb correlations are revealed: (i) the calculated quasiparticle mass enhancement of $m^*/m \approx2.5$ agrees with various experimental results, and (ii) the satellite structure at about 3 eV binding energy observed in photoemission experiments is shown to be the lower Hubbard band. For these reasons Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is identified as a strongly correlated 4$d$ electron material.

The role of transition metal impurities and oxygen vacancies in the formation of ferromagnetism in Co-doped TiO2

We have investigated the role of transition metal impurities and oxygen vacancies in the formation of ferromagnetism in Co-doped TiO2 using LSDA+U approach which takes into account strong on-cite Coulomb correlations for electronic structure calculations. Several model systems such as supercells of rutile TiO2 with Co{+2} ion in high-spin state substituted into titanium cite and with oxygen vacancies were considered. We found that exchange interaction of Co magnetic ions is ferromagnetic, but very weak due to the large average impurity-impurity distance. However, its strength becomes three times stronger when there is a magnetic vacancy nearby. The magnetic moment values are 3μ_B for Co{2+} and 1μ_B for vacancy with the opposite directions of them. Our investigation showed that exchange interaction energy of Co and vacancy moments varies from 330meV to 40meV depending on the distance between them in the supercell. We suppose that strong interaction between Co and vacancy moments should be taken into account for the explanation of high Curie temperature value in Co-doped TiO2.

Electronic structure, magnetic and optical properties of intermetallic compounds R2Fe17 (R=Pr,Gd)

In this paper we report comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetic and electronic properties of the intermetallic compounds Pr2Fe17 and Gd2Fe17. For the first time electronic structure of these two systems was probed by optical measurements in the spectral range of 0.22-15 micrometers. On top of that charge carriers parameters (plasma frequency and relaxation frequency) and optical conductivity s(w) were determined. Self-consistent spin-resolved bandstructure calculations within the conventional LSDA+U method were performed. Theoretical interpetation of the experimental s(w) dispersions indicates transitions between 3d and 4p states of Fe ions to be the biggest ones. Qualitatively the line shape of the theoretical optical conductivity coincides well with our experimental data. Calculated by LSDA+U method magnetic moments per formula unit are found to be in good agreement with observed experimental values of saturation magnetization.

Pseudogaps: Introducing the Length Scale into DMFT

Pseudogap physics in strongly correlated systems is essentially scale dependent. We generalize the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) by including into the DMFT equations dependence on correlation length of pseudogap fluctuations via additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sigma_k. This self-energy describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW-like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Sigma_k approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one-band Hubbard model with repulsive Coulomb interaction on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbour hopping. The effective single impurity problem is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). Both types of strongly correlated metals, namely (i) doped Mott insulator and (ii) the case of bandwidth W<U (U - value of local Coulomb interaction) are considered. Densities of states, spectral functions and ARPES spectra calculated within DMFT+Sigma_k show a pseudogap formation near the Fermi level of the quasiparticle band. We also briefly discuss effects of random impurity scattering. Finally we demonstrate the qualitative picture of Fermi surface "destruction" due to pseudogap fluctuations and formation of "Fermi arcs" which agrees well with ARPES observations.

Pseudogaps in Strongly Correlated Metals: A generalized dynamical mean-field theory approach

We generalize the dynamical-mean field (DMFT) approximation by including into the DMFT equations some length scale via a momentum dependent ``external'' self-energy S(k). This external self-energy describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW-like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Sk approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one-band Hubbard model with repulsive Coulomb interaction on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbour hopping. The effective single impurity problem in this generalized DMFT+Sk is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). Both types of strongly correlated metals, namely (i) doped Mott insulator and (ii) the case of bandwidth W~U (U - value of local Coulomb interaction) are considered. Densities of states, spectral functions and ARPES spectra calculated within DMFT+Sk show a pseudogap formation near the Fermi level of the quasiparticle band.

Momentum-resolved spectral functions of SrVO$_3$ calculated by LDA+DMFT

LDA+DMFT, the merger of density functional theory in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory, has been mostly employed to calculate k-integrated spectra accessible by photoemission spectroscopy. In this paper, we calculate k-resolved spectral functions by LDA+DMFT. To this end, we employ the Nth order muffin-tin (NMTO) downfolding to set up an effective low-energy Hamiltonian with three t_2g orbitals. This downfolded Hamiltonian is solved by DMFT yielding k-dependent spectra. Our results show renormalized quasiparticle bands over a broad energy range from -0.7 eV to +0.9 eV with small ``kinks'', discernible in the dispersion below the Fermi energy.

"Destruction" of the fermi surface due to pseudogap fluctuations in strongly correlated systems

We generalize the dynamical - mean field theory (DMFT) by including into the DMFT equations dependence on correlation length of pseudogap fluctuations via additional (momentum dependent) self - energy. This self - energy describes non - local dynamical correlations induced by short - ranged collective SDW - like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW - like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Σ_k approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one - band Hubbard model with repulsive Coulomb interaction on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbour hopping. The effective single impurity problem is solved by numerical renormalization group (NRG). Both types of strongly correlated metals, namely (i) doped Mott insulator and (ii) the case of bandwidth W<U (U - value of local Coulomb interaction) are considered. Calculating profiles of spectral densities for different parameters of the model we demonstrate the qualitative picture of Fermi surface "destruction" and formation of "Fermi arcs" due to pseudogap fluctuations in qualitative agreement with ARPES experiments. "Blurring" of the Fermi surface is enhanced with the growth of the Coulomb interaction.

A new hybrid LDA and Generalized Tight-Binding method for the electronic structure calculations of strongly correlated electron systems

A novel hybrid scheme is proposed. The {\it ab initio} LDA calculation is used to construct the Wannier functions and obtain single electron and Coulomb parameters of the multiband Hubbard-type model. In strong correlation regime the electronic structure within multiband Hubbard model is calculated by the Generalized Tight-Binding (GTB) method, that combines the exact diagonalization of the model Hamiltonian for a small cluster (unit cell) with perturbation treatment of the intercluster hopping and interactions. For undoped La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ this scheme results in charge transfer insulators with correct values of gaps and dispersions of bands in agreement to the ARPES data.

Comparative study of correlation effects in CaVO3 and SrVO3

We present parameter-free LDA+DMFT (local density approximation + dynamical mean field theory) results for the many-body spectra of cubic SrVO3 and orthorhombic CaVO3. Both systems are found to be strongly correlated metals, but not on the verge of a metal-insulator transition. In spite of the considerably smaller V-O-V bond angle in CaVO3 the LDA+DMFT spectra of the two systems for energies E E_F shows more pronounced, albeit still small, differences. This is in contrast to earlier theoretical and experimental conclusions, but in good agreement with recent bulk-sensitive photoemission and x-ray absorption experiments.

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory and Its Applications to Real Materials

Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is a non-perturbative technique for the investigation of correlated electron systems. Its combination with the local density approximation (LDA) has recently led to a material-specific computational scheme for the ab initio investigation of correlated electron materials. The set-up of this approach and its application to materials such as (Sr,Ca)VO_3, V_2O_3, and Cerium is discussed. The calculated spectra are compared with the spectroscopically measured electronic excitation spectra. The surprising similarity between the spectra of the single-impurity Anderson model and of correlated bulk materials is also addressed.

Mutual Experimental and Theoretical Validation of Bulk Photoemission Spectra of Sr1-xCaxVO3

We report high-resolution high-energy photoemission spectra together with parameter-free LDA+DMFT (local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory) results for Sr1-xCaxVO3, a prototype 3d1 system. In contrast to earlier investigations the bulk spectra are found to be insensitive to x. The good agreement between experiment and theory confirms the bulk-sensitivity of the high-energy photoemission spectra.

Full orbital calculation scheme for materials with strongly correlated electrons

We propose a computational scheme for the ab initio calculation of Wannier functions (WFs) for correlated electronic materials. The full-orbital Hamiltonian H is projected into the WF subspace defined by the physically most relevant partially filled bands. The Hamiltonian H^{WF} obtained in this way, with interaction parameters calculated by constrained LDA for the Wannier orbitals, is used as an ab initio setup of the correlation problem, which can then be solved by many-body techniques, e.g., dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In such calculations the self-energy operator Σ(e) is defined in WF basis which then can be converted back into the full-orbital Hilbert space to compute the full-orbital interacting Green function G(r,r',e). Using G(r,r',e) one can evaluate the charge density, modified by correlations, together with a new set of WFs, thus defining a fully self-consistent scheme. The Green function can also be used for the calculation of spectral, magnetic and electronic properties of the system. Here we report the results obtained with this method for SrVO3 and V2O3. Comparisons are made with previous results obtained by the LDA+DMFT approach where the LDA DOS was used as input, and with new bulk-sensitive experimental spectra.
