Resonant electron tunneling spectroscopy of antibonding states in a Dirac semimetal

Recently, it was shown both theoretically and experimentally that certain three-dimensional (3D) materials have Dirac points in the Brillouin zone, thus being 3D analogs of graphene. Moreover, it was suggested that under specific conditions a pair of localized impurities placed inside a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal may lead to the formation of an unusual antibonding state. In the meantime, the effect of vibrational degrees of freedom which are present in any realistic system has avoided attention. In this work, we address the influence of phonons on characteristic features of (anti)bonding state, and discuss how these results can be tested experimentally via local probing, namely, inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy curve obtained in STM measurements.

Quantum ring with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the regime of strong light-matter coupling

We developed the theory of electronic properties of semiconductor quantum rings with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction irradiated by an off-resonant high-frequency electromagnetic field (dressing field). Within the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, it is demonstrated that the dressing field drastically modifies all electronic characteristics of the rings, including spin-orbit coupling, effective electron mass and optical response. Particularly, the present effect paves the way to controlling the spin polarization of electrons with light in prospective ring-shaped spintronic devices.

Exciton Polaritons in a Two-Dimensional Lieb Lattice with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional Lieb lattice of micropillars. The energy spectrum of the system features two flat bands formed from $S$ and $P_{x,y}$ photonic orbitals, into which we trigger bosonic condensation under high power excitation. The symmetry of the orbital wave functions combined with photonic spin-orbit coupling gives rise to emission patterns with pseudospin texture in the flat band condensates. Our work shows the potential of polariton lattices for emulating flat band Hamiltonians with spin-orbit coupling, orbital degrees of freedom and interactions.

Chiral solitons in spinor polariton rings

We consider theoretically one-dimensional polariton ring accounting for both longitudinal-transverse (TE-TM) and Zeeman splitting of spinor polariton states and spin dependent polariton-polariton interactions. We present the novel class of solutions in the form of the localized defects rotating with constant angular velocity and analyze their properties for realistic values of the parameters of the system. We show that the effects of the geometric phase arising from the interplay between external magnetic field and TE-TM splitting introduce chirality in the system and make solitons propagating in clockwise and anticlockwise directions non equivalent. This can be interpreted as solitonic analog of Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Tuning of heat and charge transport by Majorana fermions

We investigate theoretically thermal and electrical conductances for the system consisting of a quantum dot (QD) connected both to a pair of Majorana fermions residing the edges of a Kitaev wire and two metallic leads. We demonstrate that both quantities reveal pronounced resonances, whose positions can be controlled by tuning of an asymmetry of the couplings of the QD and a pair of MFs. Similar behavior is revealed for the thermopower, Wiedemann-Franz law and dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit. The considered geometry can thus be used as a tuner of heat and charge transport assisted by MFs.

Periodic array of quantum rings strongly coupled to circularly polarized light as a topological insulator

We demonstrate theoretically that a strong high-frequency circularly polarized electromagnetic field can turn a two-dimensional periodic array of interconnected quantum rings into a topological insulator. The elaborated approach is applicable to calculate and analyze the electron energy spectrum of the array, the energy spectrum of the edge states and the corresponding electronic densities. As a result, the present theory paves the way to optical control of the topological phases in ring-based mesoscopic structures.

Transition from propagating polariton solitons to a standing wave condensate induced by interactions

We explore nonlinear transitions of polariton wavepackets, first, to a soliton and then to a standing wave polariton condensate in a multi-mode microwire system. At low polariton density we observe ballistic propagation of the multi-mode polariton wavepackets arising from the interference between different transverse modes. With increasing polariton density, the wavepackets transform into single mode bright solitons due to effects of both inter-modal and intra-modal polariton-polariton scattering. Further increase of the excitation density increases thermalisation speed leading to relaxation of the polariton density distribution in momentum space with the resultant formation of a non-equilibrium condensate manifested by a standing wave pattern across the whole sample.

Optically induced Lifshitz transition in bilayer graphene

It is shown theoretically that the renormalization of the electron energy spectrum of bilayer graphene with a strong high-frequency electromagnetic field (dressing field) results in the Lifshitz transition - the abrupt change in the topology of the Fermi surface near the band edge. This effect substantially depends on the polarization of the field: The linearly polarized dressing field induces the Lifshitz transition from the quadruply-connected Fermi surface to the doubly-connected one, whereas the circularly polarized field induces the multicritical point, where the four different Fermi topologies may coexist. As a consequence, the discussed phenomenon creates physical basis to control the electronic properties of bilayer graphene with light.

Topological Edge Solitons in Polaritonic Lattice

We study discrete nonlinear edge excitations of polaritonic kagome lattice. We show that when nontrivial topological phase of polaritons is realized, the kagome lattice permits propagation of bright solitons formed from topological edge states.

Exciton-exciton interaction in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers

We study theoretically the Coulomb interaction between excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers. We calculate direct and exchange interaction for both ground and excited states of excitons. The screening of the Coulomb interaction, specific to monolayer structures, leads to the unique behavior of the exciton-exciton scattering for excited states, characterized by the non-monotonic dependence of the interaction as function of the transferred momentum. We find that the nontrivial screening enables the description of TMD exciton interaction strength by approximate formula which includes exciton binding parameters. The influence of screening and dielectric environment on the exciton-exciton interaction was studied, showing qualitatively different behavior for ground state and excited states of excitons. Furthermore, we consider exciton-electron interaction, which for the excited states is governed by the dominant attractive contribution of the exchange component, which increases with the excitation number. The results provide a quantitative description of the exciton-exciton and exciton-electron scattering in transition metal dichalcogenides, and are of interest for the design of perspective nonlinear optical devices based on TMD monolayers.

Spin order and phase transitions in chains of polariton condensates

We demonstrate that multiply-coupled spinor polariton condensates can be optically tuned through a sequence of spin-ordered phases by changing the coupling strength between nearest neighbors. For closed 4-condensate chains these phases span from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM), separated by an unexpected crossover phase. This crossover phase is composed of alternating FM-AFM bonds. For larger 8 condensate chains, we show the critical role of spatial inhomogeneities and demonstrate a scheme to overcome them and prepare any desired spin state. Our observations thus demonstrate a fully controllable non-equilibrium spin lattice.

Antibonding Ground state of Adatom Molecules in Bulk Dirac Semimetals

The ground state of the diatomic molecules in nature is inevitably bonding, and its first excited state is antibonding. We demonstrate theoretically that, for a pair of distant adatoms placed buried in three-dimensional-Dirac semimetals, this natural order of the states can be reversed and an antibonding ground state occurs at the lowest energy of the so-called bound states in the continuum. We propose an experimental protocol with the use of a scanning tunneling microscope tip to visualize the topographic map of the local density of states on the surface of the system to reveal the emerging physics.

Floquet control of dipolaritons in quantum wells

We developed the theory of dipolaritons in semiconductor quantum wells irradiated by an off-resonant electromagnetic wave (dressing field). Solving the Floquet problem for the dressed dipolaritons, we demonstrated that the field drastically modifies all dipolaritonic properties. In particular, the dressing field strongly effects on terahertz emission from the considered system. The described effect paves the way for optical control of prospective dipolariton-based terahertz devices.

A driven-dissipative spin chain model based on exciton-polariton condensates

An infinite chain of driven-dissipative condensate spins with uniform nearest-neighbor coherent coupling is solved analytically and investigated numerically. Above a critical occupation threshold the condensates undergo spontaneous spin bifurcation (becoming magnetized) forming a binary chain of spin-up or spin-down states. Minimization of the bifurcation threshold determines the magnetic order as a function of the coupling strength. This allows control of multiple magnetic orders via adiabatic (slow ramping of) pumping. In addition to ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic ordered states we show the formation of a paired-spin ordered state $\left|\dots \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \dots \right. \rangle$ as a consequence of the phase degree of freedom between condensates.

All-optical band engineering of gapped Dirac materials

We demonstrate theoretically that the interaction of electrons in gapped Dirac materials (gapped graphene and transition-metal dichalchogenide monolayers) with a strong off-resonant electromagnetic field (dressing field) substantially renormalizes the band gaps and the spin-orbit splitting. Moreover, the renormalized electronic parameters drastically depend on the field polarization. Namely, a linearly polarized dressing field always decreases the band gap (and, particularly, can turn the gap into zero), whereas a circularly polarized field breaks the equivalence of valleys in different points of the Brillouin zone and can both increase and decrease corresponding band gaps. As a consequence, the dressing field can serve as an effective tool to control spin and valley properties of the materials and be potentially exploited in optoelectronic applications.

Resonance fluorescence from an asymmetric quantum dot dressed by a bichromatic electromagnetic field

We present the theory of resonance fluorescence from an asymmetric quantum dot driven by a two-component electromagnetic field with two different frequencies, polarizations and amplitudes (bichromatic field) in the regime of strong light-matter coupling. It follows from the elaborated theory that the broken inversion symmetry of the driven quantum system and the bichromatic structure of the driving field result in unexpected features of the resonance fluorescence, including the infinite set of Mollow triplets, the quench of fluorescence peaks induced by the dressing field, and the oscillating behavior of the fluorescence intensity as a function of the dressing field amplitude. These quantum phenomena are of general physical nature and, therefore, can take place in various double-driven quantum systems with broken inversion symmetry.

Realization of anomalous multiferroicity in free-standing graphene with magnetic adatoms

It is generally believed that free-standing graphene does not demonstrate any ferroic properties. In the present work we revise this statement and show that single graphene sheet with a pair of magnetic adatoms can be driven into ferroelectric (FE) and multiferroic (MF) phases by tuning the Dirac cones slope. The transition into the FE phase occurs gradually, but an anomalous MF phase appears abruptly by means of a Quantum Phase Transition. Our findings suggest that such features should exist in graphene recently investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (Science 352, 437 (2016)).

Optically tunable spin transport on the surface of a topological insulator

The emerging field of spinoptronics has a potential to supersede the functionality of modern electronics, while a proper description of strong light-matter coupling pose the most intriguing questions from both fundamental scientific and technological perspectives. In this paper we address a highly relevant issue for such a development. We theoretically explore spin dynamics on the surface of a 3D topological insulator (TI) irradiated with an off-resonant high-frequency electromagnetic wave. The strong coupling between electrons and the electromagnetic wave drastically modifies the spin properties of TI. The effects of irradiation are shown to result in anisotropy of electron energy spectrum near the Dirac point and suppression of spin current and are investigated in detail in this work.
