On gap equations and color-flavor locking in cold dense QCD with three massless flavors

The superconductivity in cold dense QCD with three massless flavors is analyzed in the framework of the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The set of two coupled gap equations for the color antitriplet, flavor antitriplet (bar{3},bar{3}) and the color sextet, flavor sextet (6,6) order parameters is derived. It is shown that the antitriplet-antitriplet gives the dominant contribution to the color-flavor locked order parameter, while the sextet-sextet is small but nonzero.

Universality and the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking

The hypothesis that the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking is due to interactions of massless fermions in their lowest Landau level is examined in the context of chirally symmetric models with short ranged interactions. It is argued that, when the magnetic field is sufficiently large, even an infinitesimal attractive interaction in the appropriate channel will break chiral symmetry.

Theory of the Magnetic Catalysis of Chiral Symmetry Breaking in QED

The theory of the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in QED is developed. An approximation for the Schwinger-Dyson equations describing reliably this phenomenon is established, i.e., it is shown that there exists a consistent truncation of those equations in this problem. The equations are solved both analytically and numerically, and the dynamical mass of fermions is determined.

Derivative Expansion of the Effective Action for QED in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions

The derivative expansion of the one-loop effective action in QED$_3$ and QED$_4$ is considered. The first term in such an expansion is the effective action for a constant electromagnetic field. An explicit expression for the next term containing two derivatives of the field strength $F_{μν}$, but exact in the magnitude of the field strength, is obtained. The general results for fermion and scalar electrodynamics are presented. The cases of pure electric and pure magnetic external fields are considered in details. The Feynman rules for the perturbative expansion of the one-loop effective action in the number of derivatives is developed.

The effective potential of composite fields in weakly coupled QED in a uniform external magnetic field

The effective potential for the composite fields responsible for chiral symmetry breaking in weakly coupled QED in a magnetic field is derived. The global minimum of the effective potential is found to acquire a non-vanishing expectation value of the composite fields that leads to generating the dynamical fermion mass by an external magnetic field. The results are compared with those for the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.

SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory with extended Supersymmetry in a Background Magnetic Field

The vacuum structure of N=2 (and N=4) SUSY Yang-Mills theory is analyzed in detail by considering the effective potential for constant background scalar- magnetic fields within different approximations. We compare the one-loop approximation with- or without instanton improved effective coupling with the one-loop result in the dual desription. For N=2 we find that non-perturbative monopole degrees of freedom remove the non-trivial minima present in the (improved) one-loop potential in the strong-coupling regime. The combination of Yang-Mills and dual desription leads to a self-consistent effective potential over the full range of background fields.

Phase transition induced by a magnetic field

The magnetic catalysis of discrete chiral symmetry breaking in the 2+1 dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is analyzed. A particular attention is paid to a possible application of the effect in solid state physics. The fermion contribution to the thermal conductivity as a function of the dynamical mass (energy gap in the spectrum) is estimated and is shown to be suppressed when a non-zero order parameter develops.

The next to leading order effective potential in the 2+1 dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature

The finite temperature effective potential in the 2+1 dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is constructed up to the next to leading order in the large $N$ expansion, where $N$ is the number of flavors in the model. The distinctive feature of the analysis is an inclusion of an additional scalar field, which allows us to circumvent the well known, and otherwise unavoidable problem with the imaginary contribution to the effective potential. In accordance with the Mermin-Wagner-Coleman theorem, applied to the dimensionally reduced subsystem of the zero Matsubara modes of the composite boson fields, the finite temperature effective potential reveals a global minimum at the zero of the composite order parameter. This allows us to conclude that the continuous global symmetry of the NJL model is not broken for any arbitrarily small, finite temperature.

Chiral symmetry breaking by a non-Abelian external field in (2+1)-dimensions

We investigate the effect of a constant external non-Abelian field on chiral symmetry breaking in a (2+1)-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and in 3D QCD by solving the gap equation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation, and also by RG analysis. In the (2+1)-dimensional NJL model chiral symmetry breaking occurs for any weak coupling constant but in 3D QCD catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking does not occur.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in QED in a Magnetic Field at Finite Temperature

The catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in the massless weakly coupled QED in a magnetic field at finite temperature is studied. The temperature of the symmetry restoration is estimated analytically as $T_c\simeq m_{dyn}$, where $m_{dyn}$ is the dynamical mass of a fermion at zero temperature.

The Gross-Neveu Model and the Supersymmetric and Non-Supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model in a Magnetic Field

The infrared dynamics in the (3+1)-dimensional supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a constant magnetic field is studied. While at strong coupling the dynamics in these two models is essentially different, it is shown that the models become equivalent at weak coupling. In particular, at weak coupling, as the strength of the magnetic field goes to infinity, both the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models are reduced to a continuum set of independent (1+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu models, labeled by the coordinates in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The relevance of these results for cosmological models based on supersymmetric dynamics is pointed out.

Dimensional Reduction and Catalysis of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking by a Magnetic Field

It is shown that a constant magnetic field in 3+1 and 2+1 dimensions is a strong catalyst of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, leading to the generation of a fermion dynamical mass even at the weakest attractive interaction between fermions. The essence of this effect is the dimensional reduction $D\to D-2$ in the dynamics of fermion pairing in a magnetic field. The effect is illustrated in the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio (NJL) model and QED. In the NJL model in a magnetic field, the low--energy effective action and the spectrum of long wavelength collective excitations are derived. In QED (in ladder and improved ladder approximations) the dynamical mass of fermions (energy gap in the fermion spectrum) is determined. Possible applications of this effect and its extension to inhomogeneous field configurations are discussed.

Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking by a Magnetic Field in QED

It is shown that the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken by a constant magnetic field in QED. The dynamical mass of fermions (energy gap in the fermion spectrum) is $m_{dyn}\simeq C\sqrt{eB}\exp\left[-\left(π/α\right) ^{1/2}\right]$, where $B$ is the magnetic field, the constant $C$ is of order one and $α=e^2/4π$ is the renormalized coupling constant. Possible applications of this effect are discussed.

Dynamical Flavor Symmetry Breaking by a Magnetic Field in $2+1$ Dimensions

It is shown that in $2+1$ dimensions, a constant magnetic field is a strong catalyst of dynamical flavor symmetry breaking, leading to generating a fermion dynamical mass even at the weakest attractive interaction between fermions. The essence of this effect is that in a magnetic field, in $2+1$ dimensions, the dynamics of fermion pairing is essentially one-dimensional. The effect is illustrated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a magnetic field. The low-energy effective action in this model is derived and the thermodynamic properties of the model are considered. The relevance of this effect for planar condensed matter systems and for $3+1$ dimensional theories at high temperature is pointed out.

Derivative Expansion for the One-Loop Effective Lagrangian in QED

The derivative expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian in QED$_4$ is considered. The first term in such an expansion is the famous Schwinger result for a constant electromagnetic field. In this paper we give an explicit expression for the next term containing two derivatives of the field strength $F_{μν}$. The results are presented for both fermion and scalar electrodynamics. Some possible applications of an inhomogeneous external field are pointed out.
