Structural Study of a Self-Assembled Gold Mesocrystal Grain by Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging

Mesocrystals are nanostructured materials consisting of individual nanocrystals having a preferred crystallographic orientation. On mesoscopic length scales, the properties of mesocrystals are strongly affected by structural heterogeneity. Here, we report the detailed structural characterization of a faceted mesocrystal grain self-assembled from 60 nm sized gold nanocubes. Using coherent X-ray diffraction imaging, we determined the structure of the mesocrystal with the resolution sufficient to resolve each gold nanoparticle. The reconstructed electron density of the gold mesocrystal reveals its intrinsic structural heterogeneity, including local deviations of lattice parameters, and the presence of internal defects. The strain distribution shows that the average superlattice obtained by angular X-ray cross-correlation analysis and the real, multidomain structure of a mesocrystal are very close to each other, with a deviation less than 10 percent. These results will provide an important impact to understanding of the fundamental principles of structuring and self-assembly including ensuing properties of mesocrystals.

Coherence properties of the high-energy fourth-generation X-ray synchrotron sources

We performed an analysis of coherence properties of the 4-th generation high-energy storage rings with emittance values of 10 pmrad. It is presently expected that a storage ring with these low emittance values will reach diffraction limit at hard X-rays. Simulations of coherence properties were performed with the XRT software and analytical approach for different photon energies from 500 eV to 50 keV. It was demonstrated that a minimum photon emittance (diffraction limit) reached at such storage rings is λ/2π. Using mode decomposition we showed that at the parameters of the storage ring considered in this work, diffraction limit will be reached for soft X-ray energies of 500 eV. About ten modes will contribute to the radiation field at 12 keV photon energy and even more modes give a contribution at higher photon energies. Energy spread effects of the electron beam in a low emittance storage ring were analysed in detail. Simulations were performed at different relative energy spread values from zero to 0.2%. We observed a decrease of the degree of coherence with an increase of the relative energy spread value. Our analysis shows that to reach diffraction limit for high photon energies electron beam emittance should go down to 1 pmrad and below.

Seeded x-ray free-electron laser generating radiation with laser statistical properties

The invention of optical lasers led to a revolution in the field of optics and even to the creation of completely new fields of research such as quantum optics. The reason was their unique statistical and coherence properties. The newly emerging, short-wavelength free-electron lasers (FELs) are sources of very bright coherent extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) and x-ray radiation with pulse durations on the order of femtoseconds, and are presently considered to be laser sources at these energies. Most existing FELs are highly spatially coherent but in spite of their name, they behave statistically as chaotic sources. Here, we demonstrate experimentally, by combining Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry with spectral measurements that the seeded XUV FERMI FEL-2 source does indeed behave statistically as a laser. The first steps have been taken towards exploiting the first-order coherence of FELs, and the present work opens the way to quantum optics experiments that strongly rely on high-order statistical properties of the radiation.

Diffraction based Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry performed at a hard x-ray free-electron laser

We demonstrate experimentally Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry at a hard X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) on a sample diffraction patterns. This is different from the traditional approach when HBT interferometry requires direct beam measurements in absence of the sample. HBT analysis was carried out on the Bragg peaks from the colloidal crystals measured at Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We observed high degree (80%) spatial coherence of the full beam and the pulse duration of the monochromatized beam on the order of 11 fs that is significantly shorter than expected from the electron bunch measurements.

Dynamical effects in Bragg coherent x-ray diffraction imaging on finite crystals

We present simulations of Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffractive Imaging (CXDI) data from finite crystals in the frame of the dynamical theory of x-ray diffraction. The developed approach is based on numerical solution of modified Takagi-Taupin equations and can be applied for modeling of a broad range of x-ray diffraction experiments with finite three-dimensional crystals of arbitrary shape also in the presence of strain. We performed simulations for nanocrystals of a cubic and hemispherical shape of different sizes and provided a detailed analysis of artifacts in the Bragg CXDI reconstructions introduced by the dynamical diffraction. A convenient way to treat effects of refraction and absorption supported by analytical derivations is described. Our results elucidate limitations for the kinematical approach in the Bragg CXDI and suggest a natural criterion to distinguish between kinematical and dynamical cases in coherent x-ray diffraction on a finite crystal.

Structural studies of the bond-orientational order and hexatic-smectic transition in liquid crystals of various compositions

We report on X-ray studies of freely suspended hexatic films of three different liquid crystal compounds. By applying angular X-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA) to the measured diffraction patterns the parameters of the bond-orientational (BO) order in the hexatic phase were directly determined. The temperature evolution of the BO order parameters was analyzed on the basis of the multicritical scaling theory (MCST). Our results confirmed the validity of the MCST in the whole temperature range of existence of the hexatic phase for all three compounds. The temperature dependence of the BO order parameters in the vicinity of the hexatic-smectic transition was fitted by a conventional power law with a critical exponent $β\approx0.1$ of extremely small value. We found that the temperature dependence of higher order harmonics of the BO order scales as the powers of the first harmonic, with exponent equal to harmonic number. This indicates a nonlinear coupling of the BO order parameters of different order. It is shown that compounds of various composition, possessing different phase sequences, display the same thermodynamic behavior in the hexatic phase and in the vicinity of the smectic-hexatic phase transition.

Statistical properties of a free-electron laser revealed by the Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometry

We present a comprehensive experimental analysis of statistical properties of the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) FLASH at DESY in Hamburg by means of Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry. The experiments were performed at the FEL wavelengths of 5.5 nm, 13.4 nm, and 20.8 nm. We determined the 2-nd order intensity correlation function for all wavelengths and different operation conditions of FLASH. In all experiments a high degree of spatial coherence (above 50%) was obtained. Our analysis performed in spatial and spectral domains provided us with the independent measurements of an average pulse duration of the FEL that were below 60 fs. To explain complicated behaviour of the 2-nd order intensity correlation function we developed advanced theoretical model that includes the presence of multiple beams and external positional jitter of the FEL pulses. By this analysis we determined that in most experiments several beams were present in radiating field and in one of the experiments external positional jitter was about 25% of the beam size. We envision that methods developed in our study will be used widely for analysis and diagnostics of the FEL radiation.

Analysis of the shape of x-ray diffraction peaks originating from the hexatic phase of liquid crystal films

X-ray diffraction studies of the bond-orientational order in the hexatic-B phase of 75OBC and 3(10)OBC compounds are presented. The temperature evolution of an angular profile of a single diffraction peak is analyzed. Close to the hexatic-B-smectic-A transition these profiles can be approximated by the Gaussian function. At lower temperatures in the hexatic-B phase the profiles are better fitted by the Voigt function. Theoretical analysis of the width of diffraction peaks in three-dimentional (3D) hexatics is performed on the basis of the effective Hamiltonian introduced by Aharony and Kardar. Theoretical estimations are in good agreement with the results of x-ray experiments.

Revealing three-dimensional structure of individual colloidal crystal grain by coherent x-ray diffractive imaging

We present results of a coherent x-ray diffractive imaging experiment performed on a single colloidal crystal grain. The full three-dimensional (3D) reciprocal space map measured by an azimuthal rotational scan contained several orders of Bragg reflections together with the coherent interference signal between them. Applying the iterative phase retrieval approach, the 3D structure of the crystal grain was reconstructed and positions of individual colloidal particles were resolved. As a result, an exact stacking sequence of hexagonal close-packed layers including planar and linear defects were identified.

Direct reconstruction of the two-dimensional pair distribution function in systems with angular correlations

An x-ray scattering approach to determine the two-dimensional (2D) pair distribution function (PDF) in partially ordered 2D systems is proposed. We derive relations between the structure factor and PDF that enable quantitative studies of positional and bond-orientational (BO) order in real space. We apply this approach in the x-ray study of a liquid crystal (LC) film undergoing the smectic-hexatic phase transition, to analyze the interplay between the positional and BO order during the temperature evolution of the LC film. We analyze the positional correlation length in different directions in real space.

Phase of the transmitted wave in the dynamical theory and quasi-kinematical approximation

Variation of the phase of the beam transmitted through a crystalline material as a function of the rocking angle is a well known dynamical effect in x-ray scattering. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to measure directly these phase variations in a conventional scattering experiment. It was recently suggested that the transmitted phase can be directly measured in ptychography experiments performed on nanocrystal samples. Results of such experiment for different crystal thickness, reflections and incoming photon energies, in principle, can be fully described in the frame of dynamical theory. However, dynamical theory does not provide a simple analytical expression for the further analysis. We develop here quasi-kinematical theory approach that allows to describe correctly the phase of the transmitted beam for the crystal thickness less than extinction length that is beyond applicability of the conventional kinematical theory.

Theoretical study of electronic damage in single particle imaging experiments at XFELs for pulse durations 0.1 - 10 fs

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) may allow to employ the single particle imaging (SPI) method to determine the structure of macromolecules that do not form stable crystals. Ultrashort pulses of 10 fs and less allow to outrun complete disintegration by Coulomb explosion and minimize radiation damage due to nuclear motion, but electronic damage is still present. The major contribution to the electronic damage comes from the plasma generated in the sample that is strongly dependent on the amount of Auger ionization. Since the Auger process has a characteristic time scale on the order of femtoseconds, one may expect that its contribution will be significantly reduced for attosecond pulses. Here, we study the effect of electronic damage on the SPI at pulse durations from 0.1 fs to 10 fs and in a large range of XFEL fluences to determine optimal conditions for imaging of biological samples. We analyzed the contribution of different electronic excitation processes and found that at fluences higher than $10^{13}$-$10^{15}$ photons/$μ$m$^2$ (depending on the photon energy and pulse duration) the diffracted signal saturates and does not increase further. A significant gain in the signal is obtained by reducing the pulse duration from 10 fs to 1 fs. Pulses below 1 fs duration do not give a significant gain in the scattering signal in comparison with 1 fs pulses. We also study the limits imposed on SPI by Compton scattering.

Spatially resolved x-ray studies of liquid crystals with strongly developed bond-orientational order

We present an x-ray study of freely suspended hexatic films of the liquid crystal 3(10)OBC. Our results reveal spatial inhomogeneities of the bond-orientational (BO) order in the vicinity of the hexatic-smectic phase transition and the formation of large scale hexatic domains at lower temperatures. Deep in the hexatic phase up to 25 successive sixfold BO order parameters have been directly determined by means of angular x-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA). Such strongly developed hexatic order allowed us to determine higher order correction terms in the scaling relation predicted by the multicritical scaling theory over a full temperature range of the hexatic phase existence.

Characterization of Spatial Coherence of Synchrotron Radiation with Non-Redundant Arrays of Apertures

We present a method to characterize the spatial coherence of soft X-ray radiation from a single diffraction pattern. The technique is based on scattering from non-redundant arrays (NRA) of slits and records the degree of spatial coherence at several relative separations from one to 15 microns, simultaneously. Using NRAs we measured the transverse coherence of the X-ray beam at the XUV X-ray beamline P04 of the PETRA III synchrotron storage ring as a function of different beam parameters. To verify the results obtained with the NRAs additional Young's double pinhole experiments were conducted and show good agreement.

Intensity interferometry of single x-ray pulses from a synchrotron storage ring

We report on measurements of second-order intensity correlations at the high brilliance storage ring PETRA III using a prototype of the newly developed Adaptive Gain Integrating Pixel Detector (AGIPD). The detector recorded individual synchrotron radiation pulses with an x-ray photon energy of 14.4 keV and repetition rate of about 5 MHz. The second-order intensity correlation function was measured simultaneously at different spatial separations that allowed to determine the transverse coherence length at these x-ray energies. The measured values are in a good agreement with theoretical simulations based on the Gaussian Schell-model.

Ptychography imaging of the phase vortices in the x-ray beam formed by nanofocusing lenses

We present the ptychography reconstruction of the x-ray beam formed by nanofocusing lenses (NFLs) containing a number of phase singularities (vortices) in the vicinity of the focal plane. As a test object Siemens star pattern was used with the finest features of 50 nm for ptychography measurements. The extended ptychography iterative engine (ePIE) algorithm was applied to retrieve both complex illumination and object functions from the set of diffraction patterns. The reconstruction revealed the focus size of 91.4$\pm$1.1 nm in horizontal and 70$\pm$0.3 nm in vertical direction at full width at half maximum (FWHM). The complex probe function was propagated along the optical axis of the beam revealing the evolution of the phase singularities.

Spatial properties of $π-π$ conjugated network in semicrystalline polymer thin films studied by intensity x-ray cross-correlation functions

We present results of x-ray study of spatial properties of $π-π$ conjugated networks in polymer thin films. We applied the x-ray cross-correlation analysis to x-ray scattering data from blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and gold nanoparticles. The Fourier spectra of the intensity cross-correlation functions for different films contain non-zero components of orders $n=2,4$ and $6$ measuring the degree of structural order in the system.

X-ray cross-correlation analysis of liquid crystal membranes in the vicinity of hexatic-smectic phase transition

We present an x-ray study of liquid crystal membranes in the vicinity of hexatic-smectic phase transition by means of angular x-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA). By applying two-point angular intensity cross-correlation functions to the measured series of diffraction patterns the parameters of bond-orientational (BO) order in hexatic phase were directly determined. The temperature dependence of the positional correlation lengths was analyzed as well. The obtained correlation lengths show larger values for the higher-order Fourier components of BO order. These findings indicate a strong coupling between BO and positional order that has not been studied in detail up to now.
