First measurement of phi_3 with a binned model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B->DK, D->Ks pi+pi- decay

We present the first measurement of the angle phi_3 of the unitarity triangle using a binned model-independent Dalitz plot analysis technique of B->DK, D->Ks pi+pi- decay chain. The method is based on the measurement of parameters related to the strong phase of D->Ks pi+ pi- amplitude performed by the CLEO collaboration. The analysis uses full data set of 772x10^6 BBbar pairs collected by the Belle experiment at Upsilon(4S) resonance. We obtain phi3 = (77.3^{+15.1}_{-14.9} +- 4.2 +- 4.3) degree and the suppressed amplitude ratio rB = 0.145 +- 0.030 +- 0.011 +- 0.011. Here the first error is statistical, the second is experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third is the error due to precision of strong phase parameters obtained by CLEO. This result is preliminary.

Evidence for the Suppressed Decay B- -> DK-, D -> K+pi-

The suppressed decay chain B- -> DK-, D -> K+pi-, where D indicates a anti-D0 or D0 state, provides important information on the CP-violating angle phi_3. We measure the ratio R_{DK} of the decay rates to the favored mode B- -> DK-, D -> K-pi+ to be R_{DK} = [1.63^{+0.44}_{-0.41}(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.13}(syst)] x 10^{-2}, which indicates the first evidence of the signal with a significance of 4.1sigma. We also measure the asymmetry A_{DK} between the charge-conjugate decays to be A_{DK} = -0.39^{+0.26}_{-0.28}(stat)^{+0.04}_{-0.03}(syst). The results are based on the full 772 x 10^6 B anti-B pair data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector.

Measurement of the decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We present a measurement of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ using a data sample containing 657$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider operating near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We determine the total branching fraction of the decay, $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν)=(1.49\pm 0.04{(\mathrm{stat})}\pm 0.07{(\mathrm{syst})})\times 10^{-4}$. We also report a new precise measurement of the differential decay rate, and extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ using model-independent and -dependent approaches. From a simultaneous fit to the measured differential decay rate and lattice QCD results, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.43\pm 0.33)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- using e+e- collisions and a determination of the Bs-Bsbar width difference ΔΓ_s

We have made the first observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 23.6 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) = (1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) = (2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) = (3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) = (6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio ΔΓ_s/cos(ϕ), where ΔΓ_s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and ϕis a CP-violating weak phase. Taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain ΔΓ_s/Γ_s = 0.147^{+0.036}_{-0.030}(stat.)^{+0.044}_{-0.042}(syst.), where Γ_s is the mean decay width.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.

First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

Measurement of B -> D^(*) tau nu using full reconstruction tags

We present measurements of B -> D^* tau nu and B -> D tau nu decays using 604.5 fb^-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We obtain Br(B^+ -> D^0-bar tau^+ nu) = (1.51 +0.41/-0.39 +0.24/-0.19 +/- 0.15)%, Br(B^+ -> D^*0-bar tau^+ nu) = (3.04 +0.69/-0.66 +0.40/-0.47 +/- 0.22)%, Br(B^0 -> D^- tau^+ nu) = (1.01 +0.46/-0.41 +0.13/-0.11 +/- 0.10)%, Br(B^0 -> D^*- tau^+ nu) = (2.56 +0.75/-0.66 +0.31/-0.22 +/- 0.10)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty in the branching fraction for the normalization mode.

Measurement of exclusive B to Xu l nu decays using full-reconstruction tagging at Belle

We report on a study of the branching fractions for the exclusive charmless semileptonic B decay modes B to pi+ l nu, B to pi0 l nu, B to rho+ l nu, B to rho0 l nu and B to omega l nu, using events tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in a hadronic decay mode. The obtained branching fractions are B(B to pi+ l nu) = (1.12 +- 0.18 +- 0.05) x 1E-4, B(B to pi0 l nu) = (0.66 +- 0.12 +- 0.03) x 1E-4, B(B to rho+ l nu) = (2.56 +- 0.46 +- 0.12) x 1E-4, B(B to rho0 l nu) = (1.80 +- 0.23 +- 0.07) x 1E-4 and B(B to omega l nu) = (1.19 +- 0.32 +- 0.05) x 1E-4, where the first error in each case is statistical and the second systematic. The partial branching fractions as a function of q2 are extracted using three q2 bins. At low q2, the combined charged and neutral pion branching fractions and a Light Cone Sum Rules prescription imply |Vub| = (3.1 +- 0.2 +- 0.1 {+0.5-0.3}) x 1E-3, while using the high q2 data and two different lattice prescriptions implies |Vub| = (3.1 +- 0.3 +- 0.1 {+0.6-0.4}) x 1E-3 (HPQCD) and |Vub| = (3.3 +- 0.4 +- 0.1 {+0.6-0.4}) x 1E-3 (FNAL) respectively. In each case the errors are statistical, systematic and theoretical (associated with the prescription used). These results are obtained from a data sample that contains 657 x 1E6 BBbar pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+ e- collider. All results are preliminary.

Measurements of Cherenkov Photons with Silicon Photomultipliers

A novel photon detector, the Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM), has been tested in proximity focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) counters that were exposed to cosmic-ray particles in Ljubljana, and a 2 GeV electron beam at the KEK research facility. This type of RICH detector is a candidate for the particle identification detector upgrade of the BELLE detector at the KEK B-factory, for which the use of SiPMs, microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes or hybrid avalanche photodetectors, rather than traditional Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) is essential due to the presence of high magnetic fields. In both experiments, SiPMs are found to compare favourably with PMTs, with higher photon detection rates per unit area. Through the use of hemispherical and truncated pyramid light guides to concentrate photons onto the active surface area, the light yield increases significantly. An estimate of the contribution to dark noise from false coincidences between SiPMs in an array is also presented.

Measurement of the form factors of the decay B^0 -> D^{*-} l^+ nu_l and determination of the CKM matrix element |V_{cb}|

This paper describes a determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ using the decay $B^0\to D^{*-}\ell^+ν_\ell$. We perform a combined measurement of this quantity and of the form factors $ρ^2$, $R_1(1)$, and $R_2(1)$ which fully characterize this decay in the framework of heavy-quark effective theory, based on 140 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle data collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. The results, based on about 69,000 reconstructed $B^0\to D^{*-}\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, are $ρ^2=1.293\pm 0.045\pm 0.029$, $R_1(1)=1.495\pm 0.050\pm 0.062$, $R_2(1)=0.844\pm 0.034\pm 0.019$ and $\mathcal{F}(1)|V_{cb}|=34.4\pm 0.2\pm 1.0$. The $B^0\to D^{*-}\ell^+ν_\ell$ branching fraction is found to be $(4.42\pm 0.03\pm 0.25)%$. For all these numbers, the first error is the statistical and the second is the systematic uncertainty. All results are preliminary.

High-statistics study of neutral-pion pair production in two-photon collisions

The differential cross section for the process $γγ\to π^0 π^0$ has been measured in the kinematic range 0.6 GeV $< W < 4.1$ GeV, $|\cos θ^*|<0.8$ in energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the $γγ$ center-of-mass system. The results are based on a 223 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. Using the data with $W > 1.4$ GeV, we obtain results on light-quark resonances and charmonia. We also compare the observed angular dependence and ratios of cross sections for neutral-pair and charged-pair production to QCD models. Differential cross sections are fitted in the energy region, $1.4 \GeV < W < 2.2 \GeV$, with a simple model where partial waves consist of resonances such as $f_2'(1525)$, $f_2(1950)$ and $f_4(2050)$ and smooth backgrounds. In the higher energy region, we observe production of the $χ_{c0}$ charmonium state and obtain the product of its two-photon decay width and the branching fraction to $π^0π^0$. The energy and angular dependences above 3.1 GeV are compatible with those measured in the $π^+π^-$ channel, and in addition we find that the cross section ratio, $σ(π^0π^0)/σ(π^+π^-)$, is $0.32 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05$ on average in the 3.1-4.1 GeV region.

Measurement of the Differential Branching Fraction and Forward-Backward Asymmetry for B->K(*)l+l-

We study B->K(*)l+l- decays based on a large data sample of 657 million BB pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. The differential branching fraction, the isospin asymmetry, the K* polarization, and the forward-backward asymmetry (A_FB) as functions of q^2 are reported. The fitted A_FB spectrum tends to be shifted toward the positive side from the SM expectation. The measured branching fractions and lepton flavor ratios (electron/muon) are B(B->K*l+l-)=(10.8+1.1-1.0+-0.9)*10^-7, B(B->Kl+l-)=(4.8+0.5-0.4+-0.3)*10^-7, R_K*=1.21+-0.25+-0.08, and R_K=0.97+-0.18+-0.06, respectively.

Measurement of B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar Decay With a Semileptonic Tagging Method

We present a new measurement of the decay B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar with a semileptonic B tagging method, using a data sample containing 657*10^6 BB-bar pairs collected at the (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider. A sample of BB pairs are tagged by reconstructing one B meson decaying semileptonically. We detect the B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar candidate in the recoil. We obtain a signal with a signicance of 3.8 standard deviations including systematics, and measure the branching fraction to be B(B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar)=(1.65+0.38-0.37(stat)+0.35-0.37(syst))*10^4. This result confirms the evidence for B- -> tau- nu_tau-bartained in the previous Belle measurement with a hadronic B tagging method.

Precise measurement of Br(tau^- -> K^*0(892) K^- nu_tau) and the mass and width of the K^*0(892) meson

Using the high statistics tau data sample recorded in the Belle experiment at KEKB, we have greatly improved the precision of the branching fraction Br(tau^- -> K^*0(892) K^- nu_tau) = (1.56+-0.02+-0.09)x10^-3, while the mass and width of the K^*0(892) meson are measured to be (895.10+-0.27+-0.31) MeV/c^2 and (47.23+-0.49+-0.79) MeV/c^2, respectively, with better accuracy than the PDG world average values. The first measurement of the decay tau^- -> K^*0(892) K^- pi^0 nu_tau is also reported with a branching fraction of Br(tau^- -> K^*0(892) K^- pi^0 nu_tau)=(2.39+-0.46+-0.26)x10^-5.

Improved measurements of branching fractions and CP partial rate asymmetries for $B\toωK$ and $B\toωπ$

We report improved measurements of $B$ to pseudoscalar-vector decays containing an $ω$ meson in the final states. Our results are obtained from a data sample that contains $388\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We measure the following branching fractions: ${\mathcal B}(B^{+} \to ωK^{+}) = [8.1\pm0.6({\rm stat.})\pm{0.6}({\rm syst.})]\times 10^{-6}$, ${\mathcal B}(B^{+} \to ωπ^{+}) = [6.9\pm{0.6}({\rm stat.})\pm{0.5}({\rm syst.})]\times 10^{-6}$, and ${\mathcal B}(B^{0} \to ωK^{0}) = [4.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7}({\rm stat.})\pm{0.4}({\rm syst.})]\times 10^{-6}.$ The partial width ratio $\frac{Γ(B^{+}\to ωK^{+})}{Γ(B^{0}\to ωK^{0})}$ = $1.8\pm0.4({\rm stat.})\pm0.1({\rm sys.})$. We also set the 90% confidence level upper limit ${\mathcal B}(B^{0} \to ωπ^{0}) < 2.0\times 10^{-6}.$ In addition, we obtain the partial rate asymmetries ${\mathcal A}_{CP} = 0.05^{+0.08}_{-0.07}(\rm {stat.}) \pm 0.01(\rm {syst.})$ for $B^{+} \to ωK^{+}$, and ${\mathcal A}_{CP} = -0.02 \pm 0.09(\rm {stat.}) \pm 0.01(\rm {syst.})$ for $B^{+}\to ωπ^{+}$.

A novel type of proximity focusing RICH counter with multiple refractive index aerogel radiator

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector, with the radiator consisting of two or more aerogel layers of different refractive indices, has been tested in 1-4 GeV/c pion beams at KEK. Essentially, a multiple refractive index aerogel radiator allows for an increase in Cherenkov photon yield on account of the increase in overall radiator thickness, while avoiding the simultaneous degradation in single photon angular resolution associated with the increased uncertainty of the emission point. With the refractive index of consecutive layers suitably increasing in the downstream direction, one may achieve overlapping of the Cherenkov rings from a single charged particle. In the opposite case of decreasing refractive index, one may obtain well separated rings. In the former combination an approximately 40% increase in photon yield is accompanied with just a minor degradation in single photon angular resolution. The impact of this improvement on the pion/kaon separation at the upgraded Belle detector is discussed.
