The pros and cons of beyond standard model interpretations of ANITA events

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment has observed two air shower events with energy $\sim 500~{\rm PeV}$ emerging from the Earth with exit angles $\sim 30^\circ$ above the horizon. As was immediately noted by the ANITA Collaboration, these events (in principle) could originate in the atmospheric decay of an upgoing $τ$-lepton produced through a charged current interaction of a $ν_τ$ inside the Earth. However, the relatively steep arrival angles of these perplexing events create tension with the standard model (SM) neutrino-nucleon interaction cross section. Deepening the conundrum, the IceCube neutrino telescope and the Pierre Auger Observatory with substantially larger exposures to cosmic $ν_τ$'s in this energy range have not observed any events. This lack of observation implies that the messenger particle (MP) giving rise to ANITA events must produce an air shower event rate at least a factor of 40 larger than that produced by a flux of $τ$-neutrinos to avoid conflicts with the upper limits reported by the IceCube and the Pierre Auger collaborations. In addition, the sensitivity of ANITA to MP-induced events must be comparable to or larger than those of IceCube and Auger to avoid conflict with the non-observation of any signal at these facilities. Beyond SM interpretations of ANITA events can be classified according to whether the MPs: (i) live inside the Earth, (ii) originate in neutrino-nucleon collisions inside the Earth, (iii) come from cosmological distances. In this communication we investigate the positive and negative facets of these three classes of models.

Rescuing Quartic and Natural Inflation in the Palatini Formalism

When considered in the Palatini formalism, the Starobinsky model does not provide us with a mechanism for inflation due to the absence of a propagating scalar degree of freedom. By (non)--minimally coupling scalar fields to the Starobinsky model in the Palatini formalism we can in principle describe the inflationary epoch. In this article, we focus on the minimally coupled quartic and natural inflation models. Both theories are excluded in their simplest realization since they predict values for the inflationary observables that are outside the limits set by the Planck data. However, with the addition of the $R^2$ term and the use of the Palatini formalism, we show that these models can be rendered viable.

Palatini inflation in models with an $R^2$ term

The Starobinsky model, considered in the framework of the Palatini formalism, in contrast to the metric formulation, does not provide us with a model for inflation, due to the absence of a propagating scalar degree of freedom that can play the role of the inflaton. In the present article we study the Palatini formulation of the Starobinsky model coupled, in general nonminimally, to scalar fields and analyze its inflationary behavior. We consider scalars, minimally or nonminimally coupled to the Starobinsky model, such as a quadratic model, the induced gravity model or the standard Higgs-like inflation model and analyze the corresponding modifications favorable to inflation. In addition we examine the case of a classically scale-invariant model driven by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. In the slow-roll approximation, we analyze the inflationary predictions of these models and compare them to the latest constraints from the Planck collaboration. In all cases, we find that the effect of the $R^2$ term is to lower the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Low-frequency wide band-gap elastic/acoustic meta-materials using the K-damping concept

The terms "acoustic/elastic meta-materials" describe a class of periodic structures with unit cells exhibiting local resonance. This localized resonant structure has been shown to result in negative effective stiffness and/or mass at frequency ranges close to these local resonances. As a result, these structures present unusual wave propagation properties at wavelengths well below the regime corresponding to band-gap generation based on spatial periodicity, (i.e. "Bragg scattering"). Therefore, acoustic/elastic meta-materials can lead to applications, especially suitable in the low-frequency range. However, low frequency range applications of such meta-materials require very heavy internal moving masses, as well as additional constraints at the amplitudes of the internally oscillating locally resonating structures, which may prohibit their practical implementation. In order to resolve this disadvantage, the K-Damping concept will be analyzed. According to this concept, the acoustic/elastic meta-materials are designed to include negative stiffness elements instead or in addition to the internally resonating added masses. This concept removes the need for the heavy locally added heavy masses, while it simultaneously exploits the negative stiffness damping phenomenon. Application of both Bloch's theory and the classical modal analysis at the one-dimensional mass-in-mass lattice is analyzed and corresponding dispersion relations are derived. The results indicate significant advantages over the conventional mass-in-a mass lattice, such as broader band-gaps and increased damping ratio and reveal significant potential in the proposed solution. Preliminary feasibility analysis for seismic meta-structures and low frequency acoustic isolation-damping confirm the strong potential and applicability of this concept.

Inflation from Supergravity with Gauged R-symmetry in de Sitter Vacuum

We study the cosmology of a recent model of supersymmetry breaking, in the presence of a tuneable positive cosmological constant, based on a gauged shift symmetry of a string modulus that can be identified with the string dilaton. The minimal spectrum of the `hidden' supersymmetry breaking sector consists then of a vector multiplet that gauges the shift symmetry of the dilaton multiplet and when coupled to the MSSM leads to a distinct low energy phenomenology depending on one parameter. Here we study the question if this model can also lead to inflation by identifying the dilaton with the inflaton. We find that this is possible if the Kähler potential is modified by a term that has the form of NS5-brane instantons, leading to an appropriate inflationary plateau around the maximum of the scalar potential, depending on two extra parameters. This model is consistent with present cosmological observations without modifying the low energy particle phenomenology associated to the minimum of the scalar potential.

Gauged R-symmetry and its anomalies in 4D N=1 supergravity and phenomenological implications

We consider a class of models with gauged U(1)_R symmetry in 4D N=1 supergravity that have, at the classical level, a metastable ground state, an infinitesimally small (tunable) positive cosmological constant and a TeV gravitino mass. We analyse if these properties are maintained under the addition of visible sector (MSSM-like) and hidden sector state(s), where the latter may be needed for quantum consistency. We then discuss the anomaly cancellation conditions in supergravity as derived by Freedman, Elvang and Körs and apply their results to the special case of a U(1)_R symmetry, in the presence of the Fayet-Iliopoulos term ($ξ$) and Green-Schwarz mechanism(s). We investigate the relation of these anomaly cancellation conditions to the "naive" field theory approach in global SUSY, in which case U(1)_R cannot even be gauged. We show the two approaches give similar conditions. Their induced constraints at the phenomenological level, on the above models, remain strong even if one lifted the GUT-like conditions for the MSSM gauge couplings. In an anomaly-free model, a tunable, TeV-scale gravitino mass may remain possible provided that the U(1)_R charges of additional hidden sector fermions (constrained by the cubic anomaly alone) do not conflict with the related values of U(1)_R charges of their scalar superpartners, constrained by existence of a stable ground state. This issue may be bypassed by tuning instead the coefficients of the Kahler connection anomalies (b_K, b_{CK}).

F-GUTs with Mordell-Weil U(1)'s

In this note we study the constraints on F-theory GUTs with extra $U(1)$'s in the context of elliptic fibrations with rational sections. We consider the simplest case of one abelian factor (Mordell-Weil rank one) and investigate the conditions that are induced on the coefficients of its Tate form. Converting the equation representing the generic hypersurface $P_{112}$ to this Tate's form we find that the presence of a U(1), already in this local description, is consistent with the exceptional ${\cal E}_6$ and ${\cal E}_7$ non-abelian singularities. We briefly comment on a viable ${\cal E}_6\times U(1)$ effective F-theory model.

Naturalness in low-scale SUSY models and "non-linear" MSSM

In MSSM models with various boundary conditions for the soft breaking terms (m_{soft}) and for a higgs mass of 126 GeV, there is a (minimal) electroweak fine-tuning Delta\approx 800 to 1000 for the constrained MSSM and Delta\approx 500 for non-universal gaugino masses. These values, often regarded as unacceptably large, may indicate a problem of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking, rather than of SUSY itself. A minimal modification of these models is to lower the SUSY breaking scale in the hidden sector (\sqrt f) to few TeV, which we show to restore naturalness to more acceptable levels Delta\approx 80 for the most conservative case of low tan_beta and ultraviolet boundary conditions as in the constrained MSSM. This is done without introducing additional fields in the visible sector, unlike other models that attempt to reduce Delta. In the present case Delta is reduced due to additional (effective) quartic higgs couplings proportional to the ratio m_{soft}/(\sqrt f) of the visible to the hidden sector SUSY breaking scales. These couplings are generated by the auxiliary component of the goldstino superfield. The model is discussed in the limit its sgoldstino component is integrated out so this superfield is realized non-linearly (hence the name of the model) while the other MSSM superfields are in their linear realization. By increasing the hidden sector scale \sqrt f one obtains a continuous transition for fine-tuning values, from this model to the usual (gravity mediated) MSSM-like models.

The Minimal Volkov - Akulov - Starobinsky Supergravity

We construct a supergravity model whose scalar degrees of freedom arise from a chiral superfield and are solely a scalaron and an axion that is very heavy during the inflationary phase. The model includes a second chiral superfield $X$, which is subject however to the constraint $X^2=0$ so that it describes only a Volkov - Akulov goldstino and an auxiliary field. We also construct the dual higher - derivative model, which rests on a chiral scalar curvature superfield ${\cal R}$ subject to the constraint ${\cal R}^2=0$, where the goldstino dual arises from the gauge - invariant gravitino field strength as $γ^{mn} {\cal D}_m ψ_n$. The final bosonic action is an $R+R^2$ theory involving an axial vector $A_m$ that only propagates a physical pseudoscalar mode.

Neutrino mass textures from F-theory

Experimental data on the neutrino mixing and masses strongly suggest an underlying approximate symmetry of the relevant Yukawa superpotential terms. Intensive phenomenological explorations during the last decade indicate that permutation symmetries such as S_4, A_4 and their subgroups, under certain assumptions and vacuum alignments, predict neutrino mass textures compatible with such data. Motivated by these findings, in the present work we analyse the neutrino properties in F-theory GUT models derived in the framework of the maximal underlying E_8 symmetry in the elliptic fibration. More specifically, we consider local F-SU(5) GUT models and study in detail spectral cover geometries with monodromies associated to the finite symmetries S_4, A_4 and their transitive subgroups, including the dihedral group D_4 and Z_2 X Z_2. We discuss various issues that emerge in the implementation of S_4, A_4 neutrino models in the F-theory context and suggest how these can be resolved. Realistic models are presented for the case of monodromies based on their transitive subgroups. We exemplify this procedure with a detailed analysis performed for the case of Z_2 X Z_2 model.

Worldsheet Realization of the Refined Topological String

A worldsheet realization of the refined topological string is proposed in terms of physical string amplitudes that compute generalized N=2 F-terms of the form F_{g,n} W^{2g}Y^{2n} in the effective supergravity action. These terms involve the chiral Weyl superfield W and a superfield Y defined as an N=2 chiral projection of a particular anti-chiral T-bar vector multiplet. In Heterotic and Type I theories, obtained upon compactification on the six-dimensional manifold K3xT2, T is the usual Kähler modulus of the T2 torus. These amplitudes are computed exactly at the one-loop level in string theory. They are shown to reproduce the correct perturbative part of the Nekrasov partition function in the field theory limit when expanded around an SU(2) enhancement point of the string moduli space. The two deformation parameters epsilon_- and epsilon_+ of the Omega-supergravity background are then identified with the constant field-strength backgrounds for the anti-self-dual graviphoton and self-dual gauge field of the T-bar vector multiplet, respectively.

Low-scale SUSY breaking and the (s)goldstino physics

For a 4D N=1 supersymmetric model with a low SUSY breaking scale (f) and general Kahler potential K(Phi^i,Phi_j^*) and superpotential W(Phi^i) we study, in an effective theory approach, the relation of the goldstino superfield to the (Ferrara-Zumino) superconformal symmetry breaking chiral superfield X. In the presence of more sources of supersymmetry breaking, we verify the conjecture that the goldstino superfield is the (infrared) limit of X for zero-momentum and Lambda->\infty. (Lambda is the effective cut-off scale). We then study the constraint X^2=0, which in the one-field case is known to decouple a massive sgoldstino and thus provide an effective superfield description of the Akulov-Volkov action for the goldstino. In the presence of additional fields that contribute to SUSY breaking we identify conditions for which X^2=0 remains valid, in the effective theory below a large but finite sgoldstino mass. The conditions ensure that the effective expansion (in 1/Lambda) of the initial Lagrangian is not in conflict with the decoupling limit of the sgoldstino (1/m_sgoldstino\sim Lambda/f, f<Lambda^2).

Building SO(10) models from F-theory

We revisit local F-theory SO(10) and SU(5) GUTs and analyze their properties within the framework of the maximal underlying E_8 symmetry in the elliptic fibration. We consider the symmetry enhancements along the intersections of seven-branes with the GUT surface and study in detail the embedding of the abelian factors undergoing monodromies in the covering gauge groups. We combine flux data from the successive breaking of SO(10) to SU(5) gauge symmetry and subsequently to the Standard Model one, and further constrain the parameters determining the models' particle spectra. In order to eliminate dangerous baryon number violating operators we propose ways to construct matter parity like symmetries from intrinsic geometric origin. We study implementations of the resulting constrained scenario in specific examples obtained for a variety of monodromies.

One-loop adjoint masses for branes at non-supersymmetric angles

This proceeding is based on arXiv:1105.0591 [hep-th] where we consider breaking of supersymmetry in intersecting D-brane configurations by slight deviation of the angles from their supersymmetric values. We compute the masses generated by radiative corrections for the adjoint scalars on the brane world-volumes. In the open string channel, the string two-point function receives contributions only from the infrared limits of N~4 and N~2 supersymmetric configurations, via messengers and their Kaluza-Klein excitations, and leads at leading order to tachyonic directions.

Non-linear MSSM

Using the formalism of constrained superfields, we derive the most general effective action of a light goldstino coupled to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and study its phenomenological consequences. The goldstino-induced couplings become important when the (hidden sector) scale of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking, $\sqrt f$, is relatively low, of the order of few TeV. In particular, we compute the Higgs potential and show that the (tree level) mass of the lightest Higgs scalar can be increased to the LEP bound for $\sqrt f\sim 2$ TeV to 7 TeV. Moreover, the effective quartic Higgs coupling is increased due to additional tree-level contributions proportional to the ratio of visible to hidden sector supersymmetry breaking scales. This increase can alleviate the amount of fine tuning of the electroweak scale that exists in the MSSM. Among the new goldstino couplings, beyond those in MSSM, the most important ones generate an invisible decay of the Higgs boson into a goldstino and neutralino (if m_h>m_{χ_1^0}), with a partial decay rate that can be comparable to the SM channel h^0-> γγ. A similar decay of Z boson is possible if m_Z>m_{χ_1^0} and brings a lower bound on $\sqrt f$ that must be of about 700 GeV. Additional decay modes of the Higgs or Z bosons into a pair of light goldstinos, while possible, are suppressed by an extra 1/f factor and have no significant impact on the model.

Beyond the MSSM Higgs with d=6 effective operators

We continue a previous study of the MSSM Higgs Lagrangian extended by all effective operators of dimension d=6 that can be present beyond the MSSM, consistent with its symmetries. By supersymmetry, such operators also extend the neutralino and chargino sectors, and the corresponding component fields Lagrangian is computed onshell. The corrections to the neutralino and chargino masses, due to these operators, are computed analytically in function of the MSSM corresponding values. For individual operators, the corrections are small, of few GeV for the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) viable parameter space. We investigate the correction to the lightest Higgs mass, which receives, from individual operators, a supersymmetric correction of up to 4 (6) GeV above the 2-loop leading-log CMSSM value, from those CMSSM phase space points with: EW fine tuning Delta<200, consistent with WMAP relic density (3$σ$), and for a scale of the operators of M=10 (8) TeV, respectively. Applied to the CMSSM point of minimal fine tuning (Delta=18), such increase gives an upper limit $m_h=120(122)\pm 2$ GeV, respectively. The increase of m_h from individual operators can be larger ($\sim$ 10-30 GeV) for those CMSSM phase space points with Delta>200; these can now be phenomenologically viable, with reduced Delta, and this includes those points that would have otherwise violated the LEP2 bound by this value. The neutralino/chargino Lagrangian extended by the effective operators can be used in studies of dark matter relic density within extensions of the MSSM, by implementing it in public codes like micrOMEGAs.

Goldstino and sgoldstino in microscopic models and the constrained superfields formalism

We examine the exact relation between the superconformal symmetry breaking chiral superfield (X) and the goldstino superfield in microscopic models of an arbitrary Kahler potential (K) and in the presence of matter fields. We investigate the decoupling of the massive sgoldstino and scalar matter fields and the offshell/onshell-SUSY expressions of their superfields in terms of the fermions composites. For general K of two superfields, we study the properties of the superfield X after integrating out these scalar fields, to show that in the infrared it satisfies (offshell) the condition $X^3=0$ and $X^2\not=0$. We then compare our results to those of the well-known method of constrained superfields discussed in the literature, based on the conjecture $X^2=0$. Our results can be used in applications, to couple offshell the (s)goldstino fields to realistic models such as the MSSM.

Generalized N=2 Topological Amplitudes and Holomorphic Anomaly Equation

In arXiv:0905.3629 we described a new class of N=2 topological amplitudes that depends both on vector and hypermultiplet moduli. Here we find that this class is actually a particular case of much more general topological amplitudes which appear at higher loops in heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x T^2. We analyze their effective field theory interpretation and derive particular (first order) differential equations as a consequence of supersymmetry Ward identities and the 1/2-BPS nature of the corresponding effective action terms. In string theory the latter get modified due to anomalous world-sheet boundary contributions, generalizing in a non-trivial way the familiar holomorphic and harmonicity anomalies studied in the past. We prove by direct computation that the subclass of topological amplitudes studied in arXiv:0905.3629 forms a closed set under these anomaly equations and that these equations are integrable.
