Lyman alpha emission in high-redshift galaxies

A significant fraction of the high-redshift galaxies show strong Lyman emission lines. For redshifts z>5, most known galaxies belong to this class. However, so far not much is known about the physical structure and nature of these objects. Our aim is to analyse the Lyman alpha emission in a sample of high-redshift UV-continuum selected galaxies and to derive the physical conditions that determine the Lyman alpha profile and the line strength. VLT/FORS spectra with a resolution of R ~ 2000 of 16 galaxies in the redshift range of z = 2.7 to 5 are presented. The observed Lyman alpha profiles are compared with theoretical models. The Lyman alpha lines range from pure absorption (EW = -17 Angstroem) to strong emission (EW = 153 Angstroem). Most Lyman alpha emission lines show an asymmetric profile, and three galaxies have a double-peaked profile. Both types of profiles can be explained by a uniform model consisting of an expanding shell of neutral and ionised hydrogen around a compact starburst region. The broad, blueshifted, low-ionisation interstellar absorption lines indicate a galaxy-scale outflow of the ISM. The strengths of these lines are found to be determined in part by the velocity dispersion of the outflowing medium. We find star-formation rates of these galaxies ranging from SFR(UV) = 1.2 to 63.2 Msun uncorrected for dust absorption. The Lyman alpha emission strength of our target galaxies is found to be determined by the amount of dust and the kinematics of the outflowing material.

Medium-resolution spectroscopy of galaxies with redshifts 2.3 < z < 3.5

Using FORS2 at the ESO VLT we obtained medium resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra of 12 galaxies with 2.37 < z < 3.40 in the FORS Deep Field. Two individual spectra with good S/N and a composite of all 12 spectra were used to derive properties of the stellar and interstellar absorption lines of galaxies in this redshift range. Systematic differences between the individual spectra were found for the strength and profiles of the intrinsic interstellar lines. For eight spectra with sufficient S/N we measured the `1370' and `1425' metallicity indices. From these indices we find for our sample that galaxies at z > 3 have lower mean metallicity than galaxies at 2.5 < z < 3. However there remain uncertainties concerning the absolute calibration of the metallicity tracers in use for high-redshift galaxies. Additional modeling will be needed to resolve these uncertainties.

Lyman-alpha emission galaxies at a redshift of z = 5.7 in the FORS Deep Field

We present the results of a search for Lyman-alpha emission galaxies at z~ 5.7 in the FORS Deep Field. The objective of this study is to improve the faint end of the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies and to derive properties of intrinsically faint Lyman-alpha emission galaxies in the young universe. Using FORS2 at the ESO VLT and a set of special interference filters, we identified candidates for high-redshift Lyman-alpha galaxies. We then used FORS2 in spectroscopic mode to verify the identifications and to study their spectral properties. The narrow-band photometry resulted in the detection of 15 likely Lyman-alpha emission galaxies. Spectra with an adequate exposure time could be obtained for eight galaxies. In all these cases the presence of Lyman-alpha emission at z = 5.7 was confirmed spectroscopically. The line fluxes of the 15 candidates range between 3 and 16 * 10^-21 Wm^-2, which corresponds to star-formation rates not corrected for dust between 1 and 5 Msun/yr. The luminosity function derived for our photometrically identified objects extends the published luminosity functions of intrinsically brighter Lyman-alpha galaxies. With this technique the study of high-redshift Lyman-alpha emission galaxies can be extended to low intrinsic luminosities.

The evolution of the luminosity functions in the FORS Deep Field from low to high redshift: II. The red bands

We present the redshift evolution of the restframe galaxy luminosity function (LF) in the red r', i', and z' bands as derived from the FORS Deep Field (FDF). Using the deep and homogeneous I-band selected dataset of the FDF we are able to follow the red LFs over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 3.5. The results are based on photometric redshifts for 5558 galaxies derived from the photometry in 9 filters achieving an accuracy of Delta z / (z_spec+1) ~ 0.03 with only ~ 1 % outliers. Because of the depth of the FDF we can give relatively tight constraints on the faint-end slope alpha of the LF: The faint-end of the red LFs does not show a large redshift evolution and is compatible within 1 sigma to 2 sigma with a constant slope over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 2.0. Moreover, the slopes in r', i', and z' are very similar with a best fitting value of alpha= -1.33 +- 0.03 for the combined bands. There is a clear trend of alpha to steepen with increasing wavelength: alpha_(UV & u')=-1.07 +- 0.04 -> alpha_(g' & B)=-1.25 +- 0.03 -> alpha_(r' & i' & z')=-1.33 +- 0.03. We show that the wavelength dependence of the LF slope can be explained by the relative contribution of different SED-type LFs to the overall LF, as different SED types dominate the LF in the blue and red bands. Furthermore we also derive and analyze the luminosity density evolution of the different SED types up to z ~ 2. Based on the FDF data, we find only a mild brightening of M_star and decrease of phi_star with increasing redshift. Therefore, from ~ 0.5 to \~ 3 the characteristic luminosity increases by ~0.8, ~0.4 and ~0.4 magnitudes in the r', i', and z' bands, respectively. Simultaneously the characteristic density decreases by about 40 % in all analyzed wavebands. [abridged]

SDSS J1553+0056: A BALQSO mimicking a Lyman-break galaxy

Using the UVES echelle spectrograph at the ESO VLT we obtained high-resolution (R = 40 000) spectra of the object SDSS J1553+0056, which has been identified in the literature alternatively as a high-redshift quasar or as a Lyman-break galaxy (LBG). Although low-resolution spectra of SDSS J1553+0056 closely resemble those of LBGs, our high-resolution spectra allow us to identify this object unambiguously as a LoBAL quasar, probably belonging to the rare FeLoBALQSO class. Based on our spectrum we discuss how misidentifications of such objects from low-resolution spectra can be avoided.

The evolution of the luminosity functions in the FORS Deep Field from low to high redshift: I. The blue bands

We use the very deep and homogeneous I-band selected dataset of the FORS Deep Field (FDF) to trace the evolution of the luminosity function over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 5.0. We show that the FDF I-band selection down to I(AB)=26.8 misses of the order of 10 % of the galaxies that would be detected in a K-band selected survey with magnitude limit K(AB)=26.3 (like FIRES). Photometric redshifts for 5558 galaxies are estimated based on the photometry in 9 filters (U, B, Gunn g, R, I, SDSS z, J, K and a special filter centered at 834 nm). A comparison with 362 spectroscopic redshifts shows that the achieved accuracy of the photometric redshifts is (Delta z / (z_spec+1)) < 0.03 with only ~ 1 % outliers. This allows us to derive luminosity functions with a reliability similar to spectroscopic surveys. In addition, the luminosity functions can be traced to objects of lower luminosity which generally are not accessible to spectroscopy. We investigate the evolution of the luminosity functions evaluated in the restframe UV (1500 Angstroem and 2800 Angstroem), u', B, and g' bands. Comparison with results from the literature shows the reliability of the derived luminosity functions. Out to redshifts of z ~ 2.5 the data are consistent with a slope of the luminosity function approximately constant with redshift, at a value of -1.07 +- 0.04 in the UV (1500 Angstroem, 2800 Angstroem) as well as u', and -1.25 +- 0.03 in the blue (g', B). We do not see evidence for a very steep slope (alpha < -1.6) in the UV at z ~ 3.0 and z ~ 4.0 favoured by other authors. There may be a tendency for the faint-end slope to become shallower with increasing redshift but the effect is marginal. We find a brightening of M_star and a decrease of Phi_star with redshift for all analyzed wavelengths. [abridged]

The FORS Deep Field Spectroscopic Survey

We present a catalogue and atlas of low-resolution spectra of a well defined sample of 341 objects in the FORS Deep Field. All spectra were obtained with the FORS instruments at the ESO VLT with essentially the same spectroscopic set-up. The observed extragalactic objects cover the redshift range 0.1 to 5.0. 98 objects are starburst galaxies and QSOs at z > 2. Using this data set we investigated the evolution of the characteristic spectral properties of bright starburst galaxies and their mutual relations as a function of the redshift. Significant evolutionary effects were found for redshifts 2 < z < 4. Most conspicuous are the increase of the average C IV absorption strength, of the dust reddening, and of the intrinsic UV luminosity, and the decrease of the average Ly alpha emission strength with decreasing redshift. In part the observed evolutionary effects can be attributed to an increase of the metallicity of the galaxies with cosmic age. Moreover, the increase of the total star-formation rates and the stronger obscuration of the starburst cores by dusty gas clouds suggest the occurrence of more massive starbursts at later cosmic epochs.

The nature of the Lyman-alpha emission region of FDF-4691

In order to study the origin of the strong Lyman-alpha emission of high-redshift starburst galaxies we observed and modeled the emission of the z = 3.304 galaxy FDF-4691 (rest-frame EW = 103 Angstroem). The observations show that FDF-4691 is a young starburst galaxy with a (for this redshift) typical metallicity. The broad, double-peaked profile of the Lyman-alpha emission line can be explained assuming a highly turbulent emission region in the inner part of the starburst galaxy, and a surrounding extended shell of low-density neutral gas with a normal dust/gas ratio and with Galactic dust properties. The detection of the Lyman-alpha emission line is explained by the intrinsic broad Lyman-alpha emission and a low HI column density of the neutral shell. A low dust/gas ratio in the neutral shell is not needed to explain the strong Lyman-alpha line.

FeII/MgII Emission Line Ratio in High Redshift Quasars

We present results of the analysis of near infrared spectroscopic observations of 6 high-redshift quasars (z > 4), emphasizing the measurement of the ultraviolet FeII/MgII emission line strength in order to estimate the beginning of intense star formation in the early universe. To investigate the evolution of the FeII/MgII ratio over a wider range in cosmic time, we measured this ratio for composite quasar spectra which cover a redshift range of 0 < z < 5 with nearly constant luminosity, as well as for those which span ~6 orders of magnitude in luminosity. A detailed comparison of the high-redshift quasar spectra with those of low-redshift quasars with comparable luminosity shows essentially the same FeII/MgII emission ratios and very similar continuum and line spectral properties, i.e. a lack of evolution of the relative iron to magnesium abundance of the gas in bright quasars since z=5. Current nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution models predict that alpha-elements like magnesium are produced in massive stars ending in type II SNe, while iron is formed predominantly in SNe of type Ia with intermediate mass progenitors. This results in an iron enrichment delay of 0.2 to 0.6 Gyr. We conclude that intense star formation activity in the host galaxies of z>4 quasars must have started already at an epoch corresponding to z_f = 6 to 9, when the age of the universe was ~0.5 Gyr (H_o = 72 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M = 0.3, Omega_Lambda = 0.7). This epoch corresponds well to the re-ionization era of the universe.

Spectropolarimetry of the borderline Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO 323-G077

We report the detection of high linear polarization in the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO 323-G077. Based on optical spectropolarimetry with FORS1 at the VLT we find a continuum polarization which ranges from 2.2 % at 8300A to 7.5 % at 3600A. Similar amounts of linear polarization are found for the broad emission lines, while the narrow lines are not polarized. The position angle of the polarization is independent of the wavelength and found to be perpendicular to the orientation of the extended [OIII] emission cone of this galaxy. Within the standard model of Seyfert nuclei the observations can be well understood assuming that this AGN is observed at an inclination angle where the nucleus is partially obscured and seen mainly indirectly in the light scattered by dust clouds within or above the torus and the illuminated inner edge of the dust torus itself. Hence we conclude that ESO 323-G077 is a borderline Seyfert 1 galaxy which can provide important information on the geometric properties of active nuclei.

Elemental Abundances in the Broad Emission Line Region of Quasars at Redshifts larger than 4

We present observations of 11 high redshift quasars ($3.9 \la z \la 5.0$) observed with low spectral resolution in the restframe ultraviolet using FORS 1 at the VLT UT 1. The emission-line fluxes of strong permitted and intercombination ultraviolet emission lines are measured to estimate the chemical composition of the line emitting gas. Comparisons to photoionization calculations indicate gas metallicities in the broad emission line region in the range of solar to several times solar. The average of the mean metallicity of each high-z quasar in this sample is $Z/Z_\odot = 4.3 \pm 0.3$. Assuming a chemical evolution time scale of $τ_{evol} \simeq 0.5 - 0.8$ Gyrs, we derive a redshift of $z_f \simeq 6 {\rm to} 8$ for the onset of the first major star formation episode (H$_o = 65$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $Ω_M = 0.3$, $Ω_Λ= 0.7$), corresponding to an age of the universe of several $10^8$ yrs at this epoch. We note that this epoch is also supposed to be the era of re-ionization of the universe.

The FORS Deep Field: Field selection, photometric observations and photometric catalog

The FORS Deep Field project is a multi-colour, multi-object spectroscopic investigation of an approx. 7 times 7 region near the south galactic pole based mostly on observations carried out with the FORS instruments attached to the VLT telescopes. It includes the QSO Q 0103-260 (z = 3.36). The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the young Universe. In this paper the field selection, the photometric observations, and the data reduction are described. The source detection and photometry of objects in the FORS Deep Field is discussed in detail. A combined B and I selected UBgRIJKs photometric catalog of 8753 objects in the FDF is presented and its properties are briefly discussed. The formal 50% completeness limits for point sources, derived from the co-added images, are 25.64, 27.69, 26.86, 26.68, 26.37, 23.60 and 21.57 in U, B, g, R, I, J and Ks (Vega-system), respectively. A comparison of the number counts in the FORS Deep Field to those derived in other deep field surveys shows very good agreement.

Evidence for chemical evolution in the spectra of high redshift galaxies

Using a sample of 57 VLT FORS spectra in the redshift range 1.37<z<3.40 (selected mainly from the FORS Deep Field survey) and a comparison sample with 36 IUE spectra of local (z ~ 0) starburst galaxies we derive CIV and SiIV equivalent width values and estimate metallicities of starburst galaxies as a function of redshift. Assuming that a calibration of the CIV equivalent widths in terms of the metallicity based on the local sample of starburst galaxies is applicable to high-z objects, we find a significant increase of the average metallicities from about 0.16 Z_sun at the cosmic epoch corresponding to z ~ 3.2 to about 0.42 Z_sun at z ~ 2.3. A significant further increase in metallicity during later epochs cannot be detected in our data. Compared to the local starburst galaxies our high-redshift objects tend to be overluminous for a fixed metallicity. Our observational results are in good agreement with published observational data by other authors and with theoretical predictions of the cosmic chemical evolution.

RXJ0806.3+1527: a double degenerate binary with the shortest known orbital period (321s)

We carried out optical observations of the field of the X-ray pulsator RXJ0806.3+1527. A blue V=21.1 star was found to be the only object consistent with the X-ray position. VLT FORS spectra revealed a blue continuum with no intrinsic absorption lines. Broad (v~1500 km/s), low equivalent width (about -1/-6A) emission lines from the HeII Pickering series were clearly detected. B, V and R time-resolved photometry revealed the presence of about 15% pulsations at the 321s X-ray period, confirming the identification. These findings, together with the period stability and absence of any additional modulation in the 1min-5hr period range, argue in favour of the orbital interpretation of the 321s pulsations. The most likely scenario is thus that RXJ0806.3+1527 is a double degenerate system of the AM CVn class. This would make RXJ0806.3+1527 the shortest orbital period binary currently known and one of the best candidates for gravitational wave detection.

Gravitationally lensed high redshift galaxies in the field of 1E0657-56

We present images and long-slit spectra obtained with FORS1 at UT1 of the VLT centered on the gravitational arc of the galaxy cluster 1E0657-56 (z = 0.296). The cluster is one of the hottest, most massive clusters known so far and acts as a powerful gravitational telescope, amplifying the flux of background sources by up to a factor of 17. We present photometric results together with the spectra of the gravitational arc (z = 3.24) and four additional amplified high redshift objects (z = 2.34 to 3.08) that were also included in the slit by chance coincidence. A magnification map has been obtained from a lens model derived from the multiple image systems. We compare our observed spectra with models and briefly discuss the stellar contents of these galaxies. Furthermore we measured the equivalent widths of the CIV 1550 and SiIV 1400 absorption lines for the objects behind 1E0657-56 studied here, as well as for some additional starburst galaxies (nearby and at high z). For CIV we find an increasing absorption equivalent width with decreasing redshift. We discuss whether this correlation could be related to the increase of metallicity with the age of the universe.

High Redshift Quasars and Star Formation in the Early Universe

In order to derive information on the star formation history in the early universe we observed 6 high-redshift (z=3.4) quasars in the near-infrared to measure the relative iron and \mgii emission strengths. A detailed comparison of the resulting spectra with those of low-redshift quasars show essentially the same FeII/MgII emission ratios and very similar continuum and line spectral properties, indicating a lack of evolution of the relative iron to magnesium abundance of the gas since z=3.4 in bright quasars. On the basis of current chemical evolution scenarios of galaxies, where magnesium is produced in massive stars ending in type II SNe, while iron is formed predominantly in SNe of type Ia with a delay of ~1 Gyr and assuming as cosmological parameters H_o = 72 km/s Mpc, Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega_Lambda = 0.7$, we conclude that major star formation activity in the host galaxies of our z=3.4 quasars must have started already at an epoch corresponding to z_f ~= 10, when the age of the universe was less than 0.5 Gyrs.

The FORS Deep Field

Dedicating a major fraction of its guaranteed time, the FORS consortium established a FORS Deep Field which contains a known QSO at z = 3.36. It was imaged in UBgRIz with FORS at the VLT as well as in J and Ks with the NTT. Covering an area 6-8 times larger as the HDFs but with similar depth in the optical it is one of the largest deep fields up to date to investigate i) galaxy evolution in the field from present up to z $\sim$ 5, ii) the galaxy distribution in the line of sight to the QSO, iii) the high-z QSO environment and iv) the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal in such a large field. In this presentation a status report of the FORS Deep Field project is given. In particular, the field selection, the imaging results (number counts, photometric redshifts etc.) and the first spectroscopic results are presented.

Identification of a complete sample of northern ROSAT All-sky survey X-ray sources. VII. The AGN subsample

In order to derive statistical properties of a complete X-ray selected sample of AGN we used the classification spectra of the RASS Selected Areas-North survey to study the luminosities, redshifts, X-ray/visual flux ratios, line widths, and various correlations between observed parameters of all Seyfert galaxies and QSOs in this sample. On the basis of these data we discuss implications for the current AGN models.
