Results from the N* program at JLab

We discuss the results on the fundamental degrees of freedom underlying the nucleon excitation spectrum and how they evolve as the resonance transitions are investigated with increasingly better space-time resolution of the electromagnetic probe. The search for undiscovered but predicted states continues to be pursued with a vigorous experimental program. While recent data from JLab and elsewhere provide intriguing hints of new states, final conclusions will have to wait for the results of the broad experimental effort currently underway with CLAS, and subsequent analyses involving the EBAC at JLab.

Theory Support for the Excited Baryon Program at the Jlab 12 GeV Upgrade

This document outlines major directions in theoretical support for the measurement of nucleon resonance transition form factors at the JLab 12 GeV upgrade with the CLAS12 detector. Using single and double meson production, prominent resonances in the mass range up to 2 GeV will be studied in the range of photon virtuality $Q^2$ up to 12 GeV$^2$ where quark degrees of freedom are expected to dominate. High level theoretical analysis of these data will open up opportunities to understand how the interactions of dressed quarks create the ground and excited nucleon states and how these interactions emerge from QCD. The paper reviews the current status and the prospects of QCD based model approaches that relate phenomenological information on transition form factors to the non-perturbative strong interaction mechanisms, that are responsible for resonance formation.

Measurement of the N to Delta(1232) Transition at High Momentum Transfer by pi0 Electroproduction

We report a new measurement of the exclusive electroproduction reaction gamma* p -> pi0 p to explore the evolution from soft non-perturbative physics to hard processes via the Q2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+), electric (E1+) and scalar (S1+) multipoles in the N to Delta transition. 9000 differential cross section data points cover W from threshold to 1.4 eV/c2, 4pi center-of-mass solid angle, and Q2 from 3 to 6 GeV2/c2, the highest yet achieved. It is found that the magnetic form factor G*M decreases with Q2 more steeply than the proton magnetic form factor, the ratio E1+/M1+ is small and negative, indicating strong helicity non-conservation, and the ratio S1+/M1+ is negative, while its magnitude increases with Q2.

Multipole Analysis of a Benchmark Data Set for Pion Photoproduction

We have fitted low- and medium-energy benchmark datasets employing methods used in the MAID/SAID and dynamical model analyses. Independent fits from the Mainz, RPI, Yerevan, and Kharkov groups have also been performed over the low-energy region. Results for the multipole amplitudes are compared in order to gauge the model-dependence of such fits, given identical data and a single method for error handling.
