Implementation of two-qubit Rydberg operations on neutral Rb-87 atoms in systems with different intermediate states

This work presents an experimental setup for implementing two-qubit operations on neutral atoms ($^{87}$Rb) with the possibility of using two different Rydberg excitation schemes. One of them uses 5P$_{1/2}$ as the intermediate level and applies the second-stage beam locally to the addressed atoms. The second scheme uses the 6P$_{3/2}$ level; in this scheme, the particles to be entangled are moved to a separate zone through which both Rydberg beams pass. The advantages and limitations of both schemes are analyzed. Based on numerical modeling performed with a Julia package developed by the authors, it is demonstrated that the spatial configuration has a greater effect on quantum-operation fidelity than the choice of intermediate level. An experimental implementation of the scheme using the 6P$_{3/2}$ level is demonstrated, making it possible to achieve a two-qubit operation fidelity of 94%.

Addressable Rydberg excitation in arrays of single neutral atoms with a strongly focused flat-top beam

We present a method for generating a laser beam with flat intensity and phase profiles in the focal region where the beam interacts with neutral $^{87}$Rb atoms in an array of optical dipole traps. We synthesize the beam as a superposition of Hermite--Gaussian or Laguerre--Gaussian modes. Then we give analytical expressions for the coefficients of such a superposition, an analysis of beam propagation along the $z$ axis in the vicinity of the waist, and several other related theoretical issues. Rydberg two-qubit dynamics driven by this flat-top profile are analyzed through numerical solutions of the Lindblad master equation using our in-house Julia package. Beam preparation is demonstrated on a neutral-atom experimental platform. Measurements reveal a difference in the visibility of Rabi oscillations for addressed atoms compared with neighboring ones, confirming the effective spatial selectivity provided by the flat-top beam profile.

Spin vs. position conjugation in quantum simulations with atoms: application to quantum chemistry

The permutation symmetry is a fundamental attribute of the collective wavefunction of indistinguishable particles. It makes a difference for the behavior of collective systems having different quantum statistics but existing in the same environment. Here we show that for some specific quantum conjugation between the spin and spatial degrees of freedom the indistinguishable particles can behave similarly for either quantum statistics. In particular, a mesoscopically scaled collection of atomic qubits, mediated by optical tweezers, can model the behavior of a valent electronic shell compounded with nuclear centers in molecules. This makes possible quantum simulations of mono and divalent bonds in quantum chemistry by manipulation of up to four bosonic atoms confined with optical microtraps.

Dynamics of a spin qubit in an optical dipole trap

We present a theoretical investigation of coherent dynamics of a spin qubit encoded in hyperfine sublevels of an alkali-metal atom in a far off-resonant optical dipole trap. The qubit is prepared in the "clock transition" utilizing the Zeeman states with zero projection of the spin angular momentum. We focus on various dephasing processes such as the residual motion of the atom, fluctuations of the trapping field and its incoherent scattering and their effects on the qubit dynamics. We implement the most general fully-quantum treatment of the atomic motion, so our results remain valid in the limit of close-to-ground-state cooling with low number of vibrational excitations. We support our results by comparison with an experiment showing reasonable correspondence with no fitting parameters.

Raman sideband cooling of a single atom in an optical dipole trap: Towards theoretical optimum in a three-dimensional regime

We clarify the optimal conditions for the protocol of Raman sideband cooling (RSC) of a single atom confined with a tightly focused far-off-resonant optical dipole trap (optical tweezers). The protocol ultimately pursues cooling to a three-dimensional ground state of the confining potential. We show that the RSC protocol has to fulfil a set of critical requirements for the parameters of cooling beams and the excitation geometry to be effective in a most general three-dimensional confguration and for an atom, having initial temperature between the recoil and the Doppler bounds. We perform a numerical simulation of the Raman passage for an example of an $^{85}$Rb atom taking into account the full level structure and all possible transition channels.

Post-selection free spatial Bell state generation

Spatial states of single photons and spatially entangled photon pairs are becoming an important resource in quantum communication. This additional degree of freedom provides an almost unlimited information capacity, making the development of high-quality sources of spatial entanglement a well-motivated research direction. We report an experimental method for generation of photon pairs in a maximally entangled spatial state. In contrast to existing techniques the method does not require post-selection and allows one to use the full photon flux from the nonlinear crystal, providing a tool for creating high-brightness sources of pure spatially entangled photons. Such sources are a prerequisite for emerging applications in free-space quantum communication.

Schmidt-like coherent mode decomposition and spatial intensity correlations of thermal light

We experimentally study the properties of coherent mode decomposition for intensity correlation function of quasi-thermal light. We use the technique of spatial mode selection developed for studying transverse entanglement of photon pairs, and show that it can be extended to characterize classical spatial correlations. Our results demonstrate the existence of a unique for a given thermal source basis of coherent modes, correlated in a way much resembling the Schmidt modes of spatially entangled photons.

Angular Schmidt Modes in Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

We report a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating that appropriately chosen set of Hermite-Gaussian modes constitutes a Schmidt decomposition for transverse momentum states of biphotons generated in the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion. We experimentally realize projective measurements in Schmidt basis and observe correlations between appropriate pairs of modes. We perform tomographical state reconstruction in the Schmidt basis, by direct measurement of single-photon density matrix eigenvalues.
