Holographic cosmology with two coupled fluids in the presence of viscosity

We explore the cosmological models of the late-time universe based on the holographic principle, taking into account the properties of the viscosity of the dark fluid. We use the mathematical formalism of generalized infrared cutoff holographic dark energy, as presented by Nojiri and Odintsov (2017). We consider the Little Rip, the Pseudo Rip, and a bounce exponential model, with two interacting fluids, namely dark energy and dark matter in a spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Within these models, analytical expressions are obtained for infrared cutoffs in terms of the particle horizons. The law of conservation of energy is presented, from a holographic point of view.

The effect of thermal radiation on singularities in the dark universe

Cosmological models with an inhomogeneous viscous dark fluid, coupled with dark matter in the Friedmann- Robertson-Walker (FRW) flat universe, are considered. The influence of thermal effects caused by Hawking radiation on the visible horizon is studied, in connection with the classified type I and type III singularities which are known to occur within a finite amount of time. Allowance of thermal effects implies that a transition to a type II singularity can take place, in a finite time. We take into account a bulk viscosity of the dark fluid, observing the equation of state in the case of radiation, and find that there is a qualitative change in the singular universe of type I: it may pass into a singularity of type III, or it may avoid the singularity at all.

Thermodynamic aspects of entropic cosmology with viscosity

We describe the evolution of the early and late universe from thermodynamic considerations, using the generalized non-extensive Tsallis entropy with a variable exponent. A new element in our analysis is the inclusion of a bulk viscosity in the description of the cosmic fluid. Using the generalized Friedmann equation, a description of the early and the late universe is obtained.

Rip brane cosmology from a viscous holographic dark fluid

This article is devoted to the application of the holographic principle to describe Rip brane cosmological models in the presence of a bulk viscosity. We make use of the generalized infrared-cutoff holographic dark energy, introduced by Nojiri and Odintsov We consider various examples: Rip brane cosmology corresponding to the Little Rip case, asymptotic de Sitter theory, and the so-called Big Freeze theory leading to a singularity. Analytical expressions for infrared cutoffs, as well as the particle and the future horizons at the brane, are obtained. The equations for energy conservation on the brane within the holographic theory are obtained in each case. The correspondence between viscous cosmology and holographic cosmology on the brane is shown.

The Casimir effect for fermionic currents in conical rings with applications to graphene ribbons

We investigate the combined effects of boundaries and topology on the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the charge and current densities for a massive 2D fermionic field confined on a conical ring threaded by a magnetic flux. Different types of boundary conditions on the ring edges are considered for fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. The related bound states and zero energy fermionic modes are discussed. The edge contributions to the VEVs of the charge and azimuthal current densities are explicitly extracted and their behavior in various asymptotic limits is considered. On the ring edges the azimuthal current density is equal to the charge density or has an opposite sign. We show that the absolute values of the charge and current densities increase with increasing planar angle deficit. Depending on the boundary conditions, the VEVs are continuous or discontinuous at half-integer values of the ratio of the effective magnetic flux to the flux quantum. The discontinuity is related to the presence of the zero energy mode. By combining the results for the fields realizing the irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra, the charge and current densities are studied in parity and time-reversal symmetric fermionic models. If the boundary conditions and the phases in quasiperiodicity conditions for separate fields are the same the total charge density vanishes. Applications are given to graphitic cones with edges (conical ribbons).

Viscous Fluid Holographic Bounce

We investigate bounce cosmological models in the presence of a viscous fluid, making use of generalized holographic cutoffs introduced by Nojiri and Odintsov (2017). We consider both an exponential, a power-law, and a double exponential form for the scale factor. By use of these models we calculate expressions for infrared cutoffs analytically, such that they correspond to the particle horizon at the bounce. Finally we derive the energy conservation equation, from the holographic point of view. In that way the relationship between the viscous fluid bounce and the holographic bounce is demonstrated.

Viscous Accelerating Universe with Non-linear and Logarithmic Equation of State Fluid

We describe the accelerated expansion of the late-time universe using a generalized equation of state (EoS) when account is taken of bulk viscosity. We assume a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. Solutions of the gravitational equations for dark energy are obtained in implicit form. Characteristic properties of the Universe evolution in the presence of the viscosity effects are discussed. Finally, the dynamics of the accelerated expansion of the viscous universe is discussed, on the basis of a modified logarithmic-corrected EoS.

Casimir energy of an open string with angle-dependent boundary condition

We consider an open string with ends laying on the two different solid beams (rods). This set-up is equivalent to two scalar fields with a set of constraints at their end-points. We calculate the zero-point energy and the Casimir energy in three different ways: (1) by use of the Hurwitz zeta function, (2) by employing the contour integration method in the complex frequency plane, and (3) by constructing the Green's function for the system. In the case of contour integration we also present a finite temperature expression for the Casimir energy, along with a convenient analytic approximation for high temperatures. The Casimir energy at zero temperature is found to be a sum of the Luscher potential energy and a term depending on the angle between the beams. The relationship of this model to an analogous open string model with charges fixed at its ends, moving in an electromagnetic field, is discussed.

Impact of effective polarisability models on the predicted release dynamics of CH$_4$ and CO$_2$ from premelted ice

We present a theory for Casimir--Polder forces acting on greenhouse gas molecules dissolved in a thin water film. Such a nanosized film has recently been predicted to arise on th surface of melting ice as stabilized by repulsive Lifshitz forces. We show that different models for the effective polarizability of greenhouse gas molecules in water lead to different predictions for how Casimir--Polder forces influence the extraction of CH$_4$ and CO$_2$ molecules from the melting ice surface. In the most intricate model of a finite-sized molecule inside a cavity, dispersion potentials push the methane molecules towards the ice surface whereas the carbon dioxide typically will be attracted towards the closest interface (ice or air). Previous models for effective polarizability had suggested that CO$_2$ would also be pushed towards the ice surface. Release of greenhouse gas molecules from the surface of melting ice can potentially influence climate greenhouse effects.

Inflation in Terms of a Viscous van der Waals Coupled Fluid

We propose to describe the acceleration of the universe by introducing a model of two coupled fluids. We focus on the accelerated expansion at the early stages. The inflationary expansion is described in terms of a van der Waals equation of state for the cosmic fluid, when account is taken of bulk viscosity. We assume that there is a weak interaction between the van der Waals fluid and the second component (matter). The gravitational equations for the energy densities of the two components are solved for a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe, and analytic expressions for the Hubble parameter are obtained. The slow-roll parameters, the spectral index, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are calculated and compared with the most recent astronomical data from the Planck satellite. Given reasonable restriction on the parameters, the agreement with observations is favorable.

Inflationary universe in terms of a van der Waals viscous fluid

The inflationary expansion of our early-time universe is considered in terms of the van der Waals equation, as equation of state for the cosmic fluid, where a bulk viscosity contribution is assumed to be present. The corresponding gravitational equations for the energy density in a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe are solved, and an analytic expression for the scale factor is obtained. Attention is paid, specifically, to the role of the viscosity term in the accelerated expansion; the values of the slow-roll parameters, the spectral index, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio for the van der Waals model are calculated and compared with the most recent astronomical data from the Planck satellite. By imposing reasonable restrictions on the parameters of the van der Waals equation, in the presence of viscosity, it is shown to be possible for this model to comply quite precisely with the observational data. One can therefore conclude that the inclusion of viscosity in the theory of the inflationary epoch definitely improves the cosmological models.

Casimir Force and its Relation to Surface Tension

From energy considerations there is reason to expect that the work done by Casimir forces during a slow displacement of the parallel plates reflects the free energy of the surface tension of the adjacent surfaces. We show this explicitly, for a one-component ionic fluid or plasma with $q_c$ as ionic charge, where the particles are neutralized by a uniform continuous oppositely charged background. For two equal half-planes, the surface-associated free energy for one half-plane turns out to be just one half of the total Casimir energy for the conventional Casimir setup. We also comment, from a wider perspective, on the intriguing possibility that knowledge about the magnitude of the surface tension coefficient obtained from statistical mechanics or experiments may give insight into the value of the conventional cutoff time-splitting parameter $τ=t-t'$ occurring in quantum field theory. A simple analysis suggests that the minimal distance $τc$ is of the order of atomic dimensions, which is a physically natural result.

Dissipative Universe-Inflation with Soft Singularity

We investigate the early-time accelerated universe after the Big Bang. We pay attention to the dissipative properties of the inflationary universe in the presence of a soft type singularity, making use of the parameters of the generalized equation of state of the fluid. Flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric is being used. We consider cosmological models leading to the so-called type IV singular inflation. Our obtained theoretical results are compared with observational data from the Planck satellite. The theoretical predictions for the spectral index turn out to be in agreement with the data, while for the scalar-to tensor ratio there are minor deviations.

Inflationary Universe with a Viscous Fluid Avoiding Self-Reproduction

We consider a universe with a bulk viscous cosmic fluid, in a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker geometry. We derive the conditions for the existence of inflation, and those which at the same time prevent the occurrence of self-reproduction. Our theoretical model gives results which are in perfect agreement with the most recent data from the PLANCK surveyor.

The influence of Lifshitz forces and gas on premelting of ice within porous materials

Premelting of ice within pores in earth materials is shown to depend on the presence of vapor layers. For thick vapor layers between ice and pore surfaces, a nanosized water sheet can be formed due to repulsive Lifshitz forces. In the absence of vapor layers, ice is inhibited from melting near pore surfaces. In between these limits, we find an enhancement of the water film thickness in silica and alumina pores. In the presence of metallic surface patches in the pore, the Lifshitz forces can dramatically widen the water film thickness, with potential complete melting of the ice surface.

The Reality of Casimir Friction

For more than 35 years theorists have studied quantum or Casimir friction, which occurs when two smooth bodies move transversely to each other, experiencing a frictional dissipative force due to quantum electromagnetic fluctuations, which break time-reversal symmetry. These forces are typically very small, unless the bodies are nearly touching, and consequently such effects have never been observed, although lateral Casimir forces have been seen for corrugated surfaces. Partly because of the lack of contact with phenomena, theoretical predictions for the frictional force between parallel plates, or between a polarizable atom and a metallic plate, have varied widely. Here we review the history of these calculations, show that theoretical consensus is emerging, and offer some hope that it might be possible to experimentally confirm this phenomenon of dissipative quantum electrodynamics.

Inflationary Cosmology Leading to a Soft Type Singularity

A remarkable property of modern cosmology is that it allows for a special case of symmetry, consisting in the possibility of describing the early-time acceleration (inflation) and the late-time acceleration using the same theoretical framework. In this paper we consider various cosmological models corresponding to a generalized form for the equation of state for the fluid in a flat Friedmann -Robertson-Walker universe, emphasizing cases where the so-called type IV singular inflation is encountered in the future. This is a soft (non-crushing) kind of singularity. Parameter values for an inhomogeneous equation of state leading to singular inflation are obtained. We present models for which there are two type IV singularities, the first corresponding to the end of the inflationary era and the second to a late time event. We also study the correspondence between the theoretical slow-roll parameters leading to type IV singular inflation and the recent results observed by the Planck satellite.

Viscous Coupled Fluids in Inflationary Cosmology

We consider the inflation produced by two coupled fluids in the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Different cosmological models for describing inflation by use of an inhomogeneous equation of state for the fluid are investigated. The gravitational equations for energy and matter are solved, and analytic representations for the Hubble parameter and the energy density are obtained. Corrections in the energy density for matter inducing the inflation and the coupling with energy are discussed. We analyze the description of inflation induced by non-constant equation-of-state parameters from fluid viscosity. The correspondence between the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio recently observed by the Planck satellite is considered.
