Non-equilibrium Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in a Driven Open Quantum System

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism, in which a phase transition is mediated by the proliferation of topological defects, governs the critical behaviour of a wide range of equilibrium two-dimensional systems with a continuous symmetry, ranging from superconducting thin films to two-dimensional Bose fluids, such as liquid helium and ultracold atoms. We show here that this phenomenon is not restricted to thermal equilibrium, rather it survives more generally in a dissipative highly non-equilibrium system driven into a steady-state. By considering a light-matter superfluid of polaritons, in the so-called optical parametric oscillator regime, we demonstrate that it indeed undergoes a vortex binding-unbinding phase transition. Yet, the exponent of the power-law decay of the first order correlation function in the (algebraically) ordered phase can exceed the equilibrium upper limit -- a surprising occurrence, which has also been observed in a recent experiment. Thus we demonstrate that the ordered phase is somehow more robust against the quantum fluctuations of driven systems than thermal ones in equilibrium.

An acoustic black hole in a stationary hydrodynamic flow of microcavity polaritons

We report an experimental study of superfluid hydrodynamic effects in a one-dimensional polariton fluid flowing along a laterally patterned semiconductor microcavity and hitting a micron-sized engineered defect. At high excitation power, superfluid propagation effects are observed in the polariton dynamics, in particular, a sharp acoustic horizon is formed at the defect position, separating regions of sub- and super-sonic flow. Our experimental findings are quantitatively reproduced by theoretical calculations based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Promising perspectives to observe Hawking radiation via photon correlation measurements are illustrated.

Engineering spin-orbit coupling for photons and polaritons in microstructures

One of the most fundamental properties of electromagnetism and special relativity is the coupling between the spin of an electron and its orbital motion. This is at the origin of the fine structure in atoms, the spin Hall effect in semiconductors, and underlies many intriguing properties of topological insulators, in particular their chiral edge states. Configurations where neutral particles experience an effective spin-orbit coupling have been recently proposed and realized using ultracold atoms and photons. Here we use coupled micropillars etched out of a semiconductor microcavity to engineer a spin-orbit Hamiltonian for photons and polaritons in a microstructure. The coupling between the spin and orbital momentum arises from the polarisation dependent confinement and tunnelling of photons between micropillars arranged in the form of a hexagonal photonic molecule. Dramatic consequences of the spin-orbit coupling are experimentally observed in these structures in the wavefunction of polariton condensates, whose helical shape is directly visible in the spatially resolved polarisation patterns of the emitted light. The strong optical nonlinearity of polariton systems suggests exciting perspectives for using quantum fluids of polaritons11 for quantum simulation of the interplay between interactions and spin-orbit coupling.

Comment on "Linear wave dynamics explains observations attributed to dark-solitons in a polariton quantum fluid"

In a recent preprint (arXiv:1401.1128v1) Cilibrizzi and co-workers report experiments and simulations showing the scattering of polaritons against a localised obstacle in a semiconductor microcavity. The authors observe in the linear excitation regime the formation of density and phase patterns reminiscent of those expected in the non-linear regime from the nucleation of dark solitons. Based on this observation, they conclude that previous theoretical and experimental reports on dark solitons in a polariton system should be revised. Here we comment why the results from Cilibrizzi et al. take place in a very different regime than previous investigations on dark soliton nucleation and do not reproduce all the signatures of its rich nonlinear phenomenology. First of all, Cilibrizzi et al. consider a particular type of radial excitation that strongly determines the observed patterns, while in previous reports the excitation has a plane-wave profile. Most importantly, the nonlinear relation between phase jump, soliton width and fluid velocity, and the existence of a critical velocity with the time-dependent formation of vortex-antivortex pairs are absent in the linear regime. In previous reports about dark soliton and half-dark soliton nucleation in a polariton fluid, the distinctive dark soliton physics is supported both by theory (analytical and numerical) and experiments (both continuous wave and pulsed excitation).

Probing few-particle Laughlin states of photons via correlation measurements

We propose methods to create and observe Laughlin-like states of photons in a strongly nonlinear optical cavity. Such states of strongly interacting photons can be prepared by pumping the cavity with a Laguerre-Gauss beam, which has a well-defined orbital angular momentum per photon. The Laughlin-like states appear as sharp resonances in the particle-number-resolved transmission spectrum. Power spectrum and second-order correlation function measurements yield unambiguous signatures of these few-particle strongly-correlated states.

Many-body braiding phases in a rotating strongly correlated photon gas

We present a theoretical study of a rotating trapped photon gas where a Laguerre-Gauss laser pump with a non-zero orbital angular momentum is used to inject rotating photons into a cavity with strong optical nonlinearity. The Laughlin-like few-photon eigenstates appear as sharp resonances in the transmission spectra. Using additional localized repulsive potentials, quasi-holes can be created in the quantum Hall liquid of photons and then braided around in space: an unambiguous signature of the many-body Berry phase under exchange of two quasi-holes is observed as a spectral shift of the corresponding transmission resonance.

Understanding Hawking radiation from simple models of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

This chapter is an introduction to the Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose condensates as applied to the study of the spontaneous emission of phonons in a stationary condensate flowing at supersonic speeds. This emission process is a condensed-matter analog of Hawking radiation from astrophysical black holes but is derived here from a microscopic quantum theory of the condensate without any use of the analogy with gravitational systems. To facilitate physical understanding of the basic concepts, a simple one-dimensional geometry with a stepwise homogenous flow is considered which allows for a fully analytical treatment.

Fractional quantum Hall states of photons in an array of dissipative coupled cavities

We report a theoretical study of the collective optical response of a two-dimensional array of nonlinear cavities in the impenetrable photon regime under a strong artificial magnetic field. Taking advantage of the non-equilibrium nature of the photon gas, we propose an experimentally viable all-optical scheme to generate and detect strongly correlated photon states which are optical analogs of the Laughlin states of fractional quantum Hall physics.

Quantum fluctuations around black hole horizons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study several realistic configurations allowing to realize an acoustic horizon in the flow of a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. In each case we give an analytical description of the flow pattern, of the spectrum of Hawking radiation and of the associated quantum fluctuations. Our calculations confirm that the non local correlations of the density fluctuations previously studied in a simplified model provide a clear signature of Hawking radiation also in realistic configurations. In addition we explain by direct computation how this non local signal relates to short range modifications of the density correlations.

Anomalous ring-down effects and breakdown of the decay rate concept in optical cavities with negative group delay

Propagation of light pulses through negative group velocity media is known to give rise to a number of paradoxical situations that seem to violate causality. The solution of these paradoxes has triggered the investigation of a number of interesting and unexpected features of light propagation. Here we report a combined theoretical and experimental study of the ring-down oscillations in optical cavities filled with a medium with such a strongly negative frequency dispersion to give a negative round-trip group delay time. We theoretically anticipate that causality imposes the existence of additional resonance peaks in the cavity transmission, resulting in a non-exponential decay of the cavity field and in a breakdown of the cavity decay rate concept. Our predictions are validated by simulations and by an experiment using a room-temperature gas of metastable helium atoms in the detuned electromagnetically induced transparency regime as the cavity medium.

Dynamic nuclear spin polarization in resonant laser spectroscopy of a quantum dot

Resonant optical excitation of lowest-energy excitonic transitions in self-assembled quantum dots lead to nuclear spin polarization that is qualitatively different from the well known optical orientation phenomena. By carrying out a comprehensive set of experiments, we demonstrate that nuclear spin polarization manifests itself in quantum dots subjected to finite external magnetic field as locking of the higher energy Zeeman transition to the driving laser field, as well as the avoidance of the resonance condition for the lower energy Zeeman branch. We interpret our findings on the basis of dynamic nuclear spin polarization originating from non-collinear hyperfine interaction and find an excellent agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical model.

Oscillatory coupling between a monolithic whispering-gallery resonator and a buried bus waveguide

We report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of the optical coupling between a microdisk resonator and a waveguide laying on different planes. While the lateral coupling between a planar resonator and a waveguide is characterized by a unique distance at which the resonant waveguide transmission vanishes because of destructive interference, the vertical coupling geometry exhibits an oscillatory behavior in the coupling amplitude as a function of the vertical gap. This effect manifests experimentally as oscillations in both the waveguide transmission and the mode quality factor. An analytical description based on coupled-mode theory and a two-port beam-splitter model of the waveguide-resonator coupling is developed, which compares successfully both to experimental data and numerical simulations.

Artificial Gauge Field for Photons in Coupled Cavity Arrays

We propose and characterize solid-state photonic structures where light experiences an artificial gauge field. A suitable coupling of the propagation and polarization degrees of freedom introduces a geometrical phase for photons tunneling between adjacent sites of a coupled cavity array. We then discuss the feasibility of observing strong gauge field effects in the optical spectra of realistic systems, including the Hofstadter butterfly spectrum.

Back-action effects in an all-optical model of dynamical Casimir emission

We report a theoretical study of the optical properties of a three-level emitter embedded in an optical cavity including the non-rotating wave terms of the light-matter interaction Hamiltonian. Rabi oscillations induced by a continuous wave drive laser are responsible for a periodic time-modulation of the effective cavity resonance, which results in a significant dynamical Casimir emission. A clear signature of the back-action effect of the dynamical Casimir emission onto the drive laser is visible as a sizable suppression of its absorption.

All-optical control of the quantum flow of a polariton superfluid

While photons in vacuum are massless particles that do not interact with each other, significant photon-photon interactions appear in suitable nonlinear media, leading to novel hydrodynamic behaviors typical of quantum fluids. Here we show the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs in a Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons -a coherent gas of strongly dressed photons- flowing at supersonic speed against an artificial potential barrier created and controlled by a light beam in a planar semiconductor microcavity. The observed hydrodynamical phenomenology is in agreement with original theoretical predictions based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, recently generalized to the polariton context. However, in contrast to this theoretical work, we show how the initial position and the subsequent trajectory of the vortices crucially depend on the strength and size of the artificial barrier. Additionally, we demonstrate how a suitably tailored optical beam can be used to permanently trap and store the vortices that are hydrodynamically created in the wake of a natural defect. These observations are borne out by time-dependent theoretical simulations.

Signatures of the super fluid-insulator phase transition in laser driven dissipative nonlinear cavity arrays

We analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics of a gas of interacting photons in an array of coupled dissipative nonlinear cavities driven by a pulsed external coherent field. Using a mean-field approach, we show that the system exhibits a phase transition from a Mott-insulator-like to a superfluid regime. For a given single-photon nonlinearity, the critical value of the photon tunneling rate at which the phase transition occurs increases with the increasing photon loss rate. We checked the robustness of the transition by showing its insensitivity to the initial state prepared by the the pulsed excitation. We find that the second-order coherence of cavity emission can be used to determine the phase diagram of an optical many-body system without the need for thermalization.

Testing Hawking particle creation by black holes through correlation measurements

Hawking's prediction of thermal radiation by black holes has been shown by Unruh to be expected also in condensed matter systems. We show here that in a black hole-like configuration realised in a BEC this particle creation does indeed take place and can be unambiguously identified via a characteristic pattern in the density-density correlations. This opens the concrete possibility of the experimental verification of this effect.

Bogoliubov Theory of acoustic Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We apply the microscopic Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose-Einstein condensates to analyze quantum and thermal fluctuations in a flowing atomic condensate in the presence of a sonic horizon. For the simplest case of a step-like horizon, closed-form analytical expressions are found for the spectral distribution of the analog Hawking radiation and for the density correlation function. The peculiar long-distance density correlations that appear as a consequence of the Hawking emission features turns out to be reinforced by a finite initial temperature of the condensate. The analytical results are in good quantitative agreement with first principle numerical calculations.
