Langevin equations for reaction-diffusion processes

For reaction-diffusion processes with at most bimolecular reactants, we derive well-behaved, numerically tractable, exact Langevin equations that govern a stochastic variable related to the response field in field theory. Using duality relations, we show how the particle number and other quantities of interest can be computed. Our work clarifies long-standing conceptual issues encountered in field-theoretical approaches and paves the way for systematic numerical and theoretical analyses of reaction-diffusion problems.

On an imaginary exponential functional of Brownian motion

We investigate a random integral which provides a natural example of an imaginary exponential functional of Brownian motion. This functional shows up in the study of the binary annihilation process, within the Doi-Peliti formalism for reaction-diffusion systems. The main emphasis is put on the complementarity between the usual Langevin approach and another approach based on the similarity with Kesten variables and other one-dimensional disordered systems. Even though neither of these routes leads to the full solution of the problem, we have obtained a collection of results describing various regimes of interest.

Absorbing states and elastic interfaces in random media: two equivalent descriptions of self-organized criticality

We elucidate a long-standing puzzle about the non-equilibrium universality classes describing self-organized criticality in sandpile models. We show that depinning transitions of linear interfaces in random media and absorbing phase transitions (with a conserved non-diffusive field) are two equivalent languages to describe sandpile criticality. This is so despite the fact that local roughening properties can be radically different in the two pictures, as explained here. Experimental implications of our work as well as promising paths for future theoretical investigations are also discussed.

Non-perturbative fixed point in a non-equilibrium phase transition

We apply the non-perturbative renormalization group method to a class of out-of-equilibrium phase transitions (usually called ``parity conserving'' or, more properly, ``generalized voter'' class) which is out of the reach of perturbative approaches. We show the existence of a genuinely non-perturbative fixed point, i.e. a critical point which does not seem to be Gaussian in any dimension.

Effective Langevin equations for the pair contact process with diffusion

We propose a system of coupled, real-valued, effective Langevin equations for the nonequilibrium phase transition exhibited by the pair contact process with diffusion (and similar triplet and quadruplet, n-uplet, processes). A combination of analytical and numerical results demonstrate that these equations account for all known phenomenology in all physical dimensions, including estimates of critical exponents in agreement with those reported for the best-behaved microscopic models. We show in particular that the upper critical dimension of these n-uplet transitions is 4/n, and 4/n-1 for their anisotropic (biased) versions.

Generalized persistence exponents: an exactly soluble model

It was recently realized that the persistence exponent appearing in the dynamics of nonequilibrium systems is a special member of a continuously varying family of exponents, describing generalized persistence properties. We propose and solve a simplified model of coarsening, where time intervals between spin flips are independent, and distributed according to a Lévy law. Both the limit distribution of the mean magnetization and the generalized persistence exponents are obtained exactly.
