Optically-Induced Polarons in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Monitoring Composite Quasiparticle Decay

Nonresonant light-scattering off atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is predicted to give rise to hitherto unexplored composite quasiparticles: unstable polarons, i.e., local ``impurities'' dressed by virtual phonons. Optical monitoring of their spontaneous decay can display either Zeno or anti-Zeno deviations from the Golden Rule, and thereby probe the temporal correlations of elementary excitations in BECs.

Adiabatic pulse propagation in coherent atomic media with the tripod level configuration

We investigate the problem of propagation of three-component resonant light pulses with adiabatically varying amplitudes through a medium consisting of atoms with the tripod level configuration. By means of both analytic and numerical methods we found the two modes of shape-preserving pulse propagation. The pulse propagation velocity is found to be either equal to the speed of light or significantly slowed down, depending on a particular propagation mode.

Dynamics of laser-induced lattice formation in Bose-Einstein condensates

We present variational and numerical solutions of the generalized Gross--Pitaevskii equation for an atomic Bose--Einstein condensate with time-dependent, laser-induced dipole-dipole interactions (LIDDI). The formation of a supersolid ground state due to LIDDI in an elongated (cigar-shaped) BEC is investigated. It is found that the supersolid structure emerges if the laser intensity exceeds a critical value, which depends on the linear density of atoms in the BEC.

Depletion of a Bose-Einstein condensate by laser-iduced dipole-dipole interactions

We study a gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate with laser-induced dipole-dipole interactions using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. The dipolar interactions introduce long-range atom-atom correlations, which manifest themselves as increased depletion at momenta similar to that of the laser wavelength, as well as a "roton" dip in the excitation spectrum. Surprisingly, the roton dip and the corresponding peak in the depletion are enhanced by raising the temperature above absolute zero.

Bose-Einstein-Young condensates

We demonstrate a possibility to create a new state of ultracold atoms which we call a Bose-Einstein-Young condensate. Atoms are supposed to be in different hyperfine state of the same isotope. The wave function of such a state, although totally symmetric with respect to simultaneous permutation of co-ordinates and spins of any pair of atoms, has more complicated structure than a simple product of totally symmetric co-ordinate and spin parts. Its properties with respect to permutations of only co-ordinates or only spins are characterized by a particular Young diagram, a symbol denoting an irreducible representation of the permutation group.

Quantum acoustic bremsstrahlung of impurity atoms in a Bose--Einstein condensate

We study the process of scattering of two impurity atoms accompanied by generation of an elementary excitation in a surrounding Bose--Einstein condensate. This process, unlike the phonon generation by a {\it single} impurity atom, has no velocity threshold and can be regarded as a quantum acoustic analog of a bremsstrahlung in quantum electrodynamics.

Metal abundances and kinematics of quasar absorbers.- I. Absorption systems toward J2233-606

The metal line profiles of different ions observed in high HI column density systems [N(HI) > 10^{16} cm^{-2}] in quasar spectra can be used to constrain the ionization structure and kinematic characteristics of the absorbers. For these purposes, a modified Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI) procedure was applied to the study of three absorption systems in the spectrum of the HDF-South quasar J2233-606 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. The MCI does not confirm variations of metal abundances within separate systems which were discussed in the literature. Instead, we found that an assumption of a homogeneous metal content and a unique photoionizing background is sufficient to describe the observed complex metal profiles. It was also found that the linear size L and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v measured within the absorbers obey a scaling relation, namely, sigma_v increases with increasing L, and that metal abundance is inversely proportional to the linear size of the system: the highest metallicity was measured in the system with the smallest L.

Waves on an interface between two phase-separated Bose-Einstein condensates

We examine waves localized near a boundary between two weakly segregated Bose-Einstein condensates. In the case of a wavelength of order of or larger than the thickness of the overlap region the variational method is used. The dispersion laws for the two oscillation branches are found in analytic form. The opposite case of a wavelength much shorter than the healing length in the bulk condensate is also discussed.

Effects of nonlinearity in wave propagation in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in its polar ground state. We analyze magnetization waves of a finite amplitude and show that their nonlinear coupling to the density waves change the dependence of the frequency on the wavenumber dramatically. In contrary, the density wave propagation is much less modified by the nonlinearity effects. A similar phenomenon in a miscible two-component condensate is studied, too.

Cold Bose gases with large scattering lengths

We calculate the energy and condensate fraction for a dense system of bosons interacting through an attractive short range interaction with positive s-wave scattering length $a$. At high densities, $n>>a^{-3}$, the energy per particle, chemical potential, and square of the sound speed are independent of the scattering length and proportional to $n^{2/3}$, as in Fermi systems.

Collective Excitations of a "Gravitationally" Self-Bound Bose Gas

We investigate the collective excitations of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the self-binding regime produced by electromagnetically induced ``gravity'' (1/r attraction). Analytical expressions for the frequencies of the monopole and quadrupole modes are obtained at zero temperature, using the sum-rule approach, and compared with the exact results available in the Thomas-Fermi limit. The low-energy dynamics of such condensates is shown to be dominated by the effective ``plasma'' frequency. An analog of the Jeans gravitational instability is analyzed.

Collective excitation frequencies of a Bose - Einstein condensate with electromagnetically induced $1/r$ attraction

We investigate collective excitations of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a recently discovered regime [D.O'Dell et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5687 (2000)] of a balance between electromagnetically induced $1/r$ attraction and a short-range interatomic repulsion. The corresponding frequencies for monopole, dipole, and quadrupole modes are calculated numerically in the zero temperature case.

Incoherent scattering of light by a Bose--Einstein condensate of interacting atoms

We demonstrate that incoherent photon scattering by a Bose-Einstein condensate of non-ideal atomic gas is enhanced due to bosonic stimulation of spontaneous emission, similarly to coherent scattering in forward direction. Necessary initial population of non-condensate states is provided by quantum depletion of a condensate caused by interatomic repulsion.
