Non-analytic spin susceptibility of a nested Fermi liquid: the case of Fe-based pnictides

We propose an explanation of the peculiar linear temperature dependence of the uniform spin susceptibility $χ(T)$ in ferropnictides. We argue that the linear in $T$ term appears due to non-analytic temperature dependence of $χ(T)$ in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid. We show that the prefactor of the $T$ term is expressed via the square of the spin-density-wave (SDW) amplitude connecting nested hole and electron pockets. Due to an incipient SDW instability, this amplitude is large, which, along with a small value of the Fermi energy, makes the $T$ dependence of $χ(T)$ strong. We demonstrate that this mechanism is in quantitative agreement with the experiment.

Theory of magnetic excitations in iron-based layered superconductors

Based on the effective four-band model we analyze the spin response in the normal and superconducting states of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. While the normal state spin excitations are dominated by the continuum of the interorbital antiferromagnetic fluctuations and the intraband spin density wave fluctuations, the unconventional superconductivity yields different feedback. The resonance peak in form of the well-defined spin exciton occurs {\it only} for the interband scattering at the antiferromagnetic momentum ${\bf Q}_{AFM}$ for the $s_\pm$ (extended s-wave) superconducting order parameter and it disappears rapidly for ${\bf q} < {\bf Q}_{AFM}$. The resonance feature is extremely weak for the $d_{x^2 -y^2}$-wave order parameter due to specific Fermi surface topology of these compounds. The essential difference between $s_\pm$-wave and $d_{x^2 -y^2}$-wave symmetries for the magnetic excitations can be used for experimental determination of the superconducting wave function symmetry.

Magnetic susceptibility of YbRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2 on the basis of a localized 4f electron approach

We consider the local properties of the Yb3+ ion in the crystal electric field in the Kondo lattice compounds YbRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. On this basis we have calculated the magnetic susceptibility taking into account the Kondo interaction in the simplest molecular field approximation. The resulting Curie-Weiss law and Van Vleck susceptibilities could be excellently fitted to experimental results in a wide temperature interval where thermodynamic and transport properties show non-Fermi-liquid behaviour for these materials.

Local moment fluctuations in an optimally-doped high Tc superconductor

We present results of neutron scattering experiments on YBa2Cu3O6.95 (Tc=93K). Our results indicate that magnetic collective modes due to correlated local moments are present both above and below Tc in optimally doped YBCO. The magnon-like modes are robust and not overdamped by itinerant particle-hole excitations, which may point at a substantial static or slowly fluctuating charge inhomogeneity. We compare the experimental results to predictions of the Fermi liquid (FL) theory in the Random Phase Approximation (RPA).

Magnetism, superconductivity, and pairing symmetry in Fe-based superconductors

We analyze antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in novel $Fe-$based superconductors within the itinerant model of small electron and hole pockets near $(0,0)$ and $(π,π)$. We argue that the effective interactions in both channels logarithmically flow towards the same values at low energies, {\it i.e.}, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity must be treated on equal footings. The magnetic instability comes first for equal sizes of the two pockets, but looses to superconductivity upon doping. The superconducting gap has no nodes, but changes sign between the two Fermi surfaces (extended s-wave symmetry). We argue that the $T$ dependencies of the spin susceptibility and NMR relaxation rate for such state are exponential only at very low $T$, and can be well fitted by power-laws over a wide $T$ range below $T_c$.

Commensurate Spin Density Wave in LaOFeAs: A Local Probe Study

We present a detailed study on the magnetic order in the undoped mother compound LaOFeAs of the recently discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs. In particular, we present local probe measurements of the magnetic properties of LaOFeAs by means of $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and muon spin relaxation in zero external field along with magnetization and resistivity studies. These experiments prove a commensurate static magnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered moment of 0.25(5) $μ_B$ at the iron site below T_N = 138 K, well separated from a structural phase transition at T_N = 156 K. The temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization is determined and compared to theory. Using a four-band spin density wave model both, the size of the order parameter and the quick saturation below T_N are reproduced.

Doping evolution of itinerant magnetic excitations in Fe-based oxypnictides

Employing the four-band tight-binding model we study theoretically the doping dependence of the spin response in the normal state of novel Fe-based pnictide superconductors. We show that the commensurate spin density wave (SDW) transition that arises due to interband scattering between the hole $α$-pockets and the electron $β$-pockets disappears already at the doping concentration $x \approx 0.04$ reflecting the evolution of the Fermi surfaces. Correspondingly, with further increase of the doping the antiferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed for $x > 0.1$ and the Im$χ({\bf Q_{AFM}},ω)$ becomes nearly temperature independent. At the same time, we observe that the uniform susceptibility deviates from the Pauli-like behavior and is increasing with increasing temperature reflecting the activation processes for the $α$-Fermi surfaces up to temperatures of about T=800K. With increase of the doping the absolute value of the uniform susceptibility lowers and its temperature dependence changes. In particular, it is a constant at low temperatures and then decreases with increasing temperature. We discuss our results in a context of recent experimental data.

Feedback spin resonance in superconducting CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeCoIn$_5$

We show that the recently observed spin resonance modes in heavy-fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ are magnetic excitons originating from superconducting quasiparticles. The wave vector ${\bf Q}$ of the resonance state leads to a powerful criterion for the symmetry and node positions of the unconventional gap function. The detailed analysis of the superconducting feedback on magnetic excitations reveals that the symmetry of the superconducting gap corresponds to a singlet $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state symmetry in both compounds. In particular this resolves the long-standing ambiguity of the gap symmetry in CeCoIn$_5$. We demonstrate that in both superconductors the resonance peak shows a significant dispersion away from ${\bf Q}$ that should be observed experimentally. Our results suggest a unifying nature of the resonance peaks in the two heavy-fermion superconductors and in layered cuprates.

Dynamical magnetic susceptibility in the lamellar cobaltate superconductor Na_xCoO_2$\cdot y$H_2O

We systematically analyze the influence of the superconducting gap symmetry and the electronic structure on the dynamical spin susceptibility in superconducting Na_xCoO_2$\cdot y$H_2O within a three different models: the single a_{1g}-band model with nearest-neighbor hoppings, the realistic three-band t_{2g}-model with, and without e'_g pockets present at the Fermi surface. We show that the magnetic response in the normal state is dominated by the incommensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave fluctuations at large momenta in agreement with experimental temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate. Also, we demonstrate that the presence or the absence of the e'_g-pockets at the Fermi surface does not affect significantly this conclusion. In the superconducting state our results for d_{x^2-y^2}- or d_{xy}-wave symmetries of the superconducting order parameter are consistent with experimental data and exclude nodeless $d_{x^2-y^2} + id_{xy}$-wave symmetry. We further point out that the spin-resonance peak proposed earlier is improbable for the realistic band structure of Na_xCoO_2$\cdot y$H_2O. Moreover, even if present the resonance peak is confined to the antiferromagnetic wave vector and disappears away from it.

Electron-phonon interaction in the lamellar cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We study theoretically and experimentally the dependence of the electron-phonon interaction in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ on the sodium concentration $x$. For the two oxygen phonon modes found in Raman experiments, $A_{1g}$ and $E_{1g}$, we calculate the matrix elements of the electron-phonon interaction. Analyzing the feedback effect of the conduction electrons on the phonon frequency we compare the calculated and experimentally observed doping dependence of the $A_{1g}$ mode. Furthermore, due to the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling for the $E_{1g}$ symmetry we find no renormalization of the corresponding phonon frequency which agrees with experiment. Our results shed light on the possible importance of the electron-phonon interaction in this system.

Electronic theory for itinerant in-plane magnetic fluctuations in Na$_x$CoO$_2$

Starting from {\it ab-initio} band structure for Na$_x$CoO$_2$, we derive the single-electron energies and the effective tight-binding description for the $t_{2g}$ bands using a projection procedure. We find that due to the presence of the next-nearest-neighbor hoppings a local minimum in the electronic dispersion close to the $Γ$ point of the first Brillouin zone forms. Therefore, in addition to a large Fermi surface an electron pocket close to the $Γ$ point emerges at high doping concentrations. The latter yields the new scattering channel resulting in a peak structure of the itinerant magnetic susceptibility at small momenta. This indicates itinerant in-plane ferromagnetic state above certain critical concentration $x_m$, in agreement with neutron scattering data. Below $x_m$ the magnetic susceptibility shows a tendency towards the antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We estimate the value of $0.58 < x_m < 0.7$ within the rigid band model and within the Hubbard model with infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion consistent with the experimental phase diagram.

Itinerant in-plane magnetic fluctuations and many-body correlations in Na$_x$CoO$_2$

Based on the {\it ab-initio} band structure for Na$_x$CoO$_2$ we derive the single-electron energies and the effective tight-binding description for the $t_{2g}$ bands using projection procedure. Due to the presence of the next-nearest-neighbor hoppings a local minimum in the electronic dispersion close to the $Γ$ point of the first Brillouin zone forms. Correspondingly, in addition to a large Fermi surface an electron pocket close to the $Γ$ point emerges at high doping concentrations. The latter yields the new scattering channel resulting in a peak structure of the itinerant magnetic susceptibility at small momenta. This indicates dominant itinerant in-plane ferromagnetic fluctuations above certain critical concentration $x_m$, in agreement with neutron scattering data. Below $x_m$ the magnetic susceptibility shows a tendency towards the antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We further analyze the many-body effects on the electronic and magnetic excitations using various approximations applicable for different $U/t$ ratio.

Theory of magnetic excitons in the heavy-fermion superconductor $UPd_{2}Al_{3}$

We analyze the influence of unconventional superconductivity on the magnetic excitations in the heavy fermion compound UPd$_2$Al$_3$. We show that it leads to the formation of a bound state at energies well below 2$Δ_0$ at the antiferromagnetic wave vector {\textbf Q}=$(0,0,π/c)$. Its signature is a resonance peak in the spectrum of magnetic excitations in good agreement with results from inelastic neutron scattering. Furthermore we investigate the influence of antiferromagnetic order on the formation of the resonance peak. We find that its intensity is enhanced due to intraband transitions induced by the reconstruction of Fermi surface sheets. We determine the dispersion of the resonance peak near {\textbf Q} and show that it is dominated by the magnetic exciton dispersion associated with local moments. We demonstrate by a microscopic calculation that UPd$_2$Al$_3$ is another example in which the unconventional nature of the superconducting order parameter can be probed by means of inelastic neutron scattering and determined unambiguously.

Relation between the one-particle spectral function and dynamic spin susceptibility in superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8-δ}$

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) provides a detailed view of the renormalized band structure and, consequently, is a key to the self-energy and the single-particle Green's function. Here we summarize the ARPES data accumulated over the whole Brillouin zone for the optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8-δ}$ into a parametric model of the Green's function, which we use for calculating the itinerant component of the dynamic spin susceptibility in absolute units with many-body effects taken into account. By comparison with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data we show that the itinerant component of the spin response can account for the integral intensity of the experimental INS spectrum. Taking into account the bi-layer splitting, we explain the magnetic resonances in the acoustic (odd) and optic (even) INS channels.

About the relation between the quasiparticle Green's function in cuprates obtained from ARPES data and the magnetic susceptibility

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) provides a detailed view of the renormalized band structure in cuprates and, consequently, is a key to the self-energy and the quasiparticle Green's function. Such information gives a clue to the comparison of ARPES with scanning tunneling microscopy, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and Raman scattering data. Here we touch on a potential possibility of such a comparison with the dynamical magnetic susceptibility measured in INS experiments. Calculations based on the experimentally measured quasiparticle self-energies in cuprates lead to the estimated magnetic susceptibility response with many-body effects taken into account.

Magnetic field dependence of the superconducting gap node topology in non-centrosymmetric CePt$_3$Si

The non-centrosymmetric superconductor CePt$_3$Si is believed to have a line node in the energy gap arising from coexistence of s-wave and p-wave pairing. We show that a weak c-axis magnetic field will remove this line node, since it has no topological stability against time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbations. Conversely a field in the $a-b$ plane is shown to remove the line node on some regions of the Fermi surface, while bifurcating the line node in other directions, resulting in two 'boomerang'-like shapes. These line node topological changes are predicted to be observable experimentally in the low temperature heat capacity.

Dynamical spin susceptibility and the resonance peak in the pseudogap region of the underdoped cuprate superconductors

We present a study of the dynamical spin susceptibility in the pseudogap region of the high-T$_c$ cuprate superconductors. We analyze and compare the formation of the so-called resonance peak, in three different ordered states: the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting (DSC) phase, the $d$-density wave (DDW) state, and a phase with coexisting DDW and DSC order. An analysis of the resonance's frequency and momentum dependence in all three states reveals significant differences between them. In particular, in the DDW state, we find that a nearly dispersionless resonance excitation exists only in a narrow region around ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$. At the same time, in the coexisting DDW and DSC state, the dispersion of the resonance peak near ${\bf Q}$ is significantly changed from that in the pure DSC state. Away from $(π,π)$, however, we find that the form and dispersion of the resonance excitation in the coexisting DDW and DSC state and pure DSC state are quite similar. Our results demonstrate that a detailed experimental measurement of the resonance's dispersion allows one to distinguish between the underlying phases - a DDW state, a DSC state, or a coexisting DDW and DSC state - in which the resonance peak emerges.

Spin dynamics in HTSC cuprates: The singlet--correlated band (or t-J-V) model and its applications

So far calculations of the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state of cuprates have been performed in the framework of weak-coupling approximations. However, it is known that cuprates belong to Mott-Hubbard doped materials where electron correlations are important. In this paper an analytical expression for the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state of cuprates is derived within the singlet-correlated band model, which takes into account strong correlations. The expression of the spin susceptibility is evaluated using values for the hopping parameters adapted to measurements of the Fermi surface of the materials YBa2Cu3O7 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. We show that the available experimental data which are directly related to the spin susceptibility can be explained consistently within one set of model parameters for each material. These experiments include the magnetic resonance peak observed by inelastic neutron scattering and the temperature dependence of the NMR spin shift, spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation rates in the superconducting state.
