Oscillatory D'yakonov-Perel' spin dynamics in two dimensional electron gases

Optical pump-probe measurements of spin-dynamics at temperatures down to 1.5K are described for a series of (001)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well samples containing high mobility two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs). For well widths ranging from 5 nm to 20 nm and 2DEG sheet densities from 1.75x1011cm-2 to 3.5x1011cm-2 the evolution of a small injected spin population is found to be a damped oscillation rather than exponential relaxation, consistent with the quasi-collision-free regime of D'yakonov-Perel spin dynamics. A Monte Carlo simulation method is used to extract the spin-orbit-induced electron spin precession frequency |W(kF)| and electron momentum scattering time tp* at the Fermi wavevector. The spin decay time passes through a minimum at a temperature corresponding to the transition from collision-free to collision-dominated regimes and tp* is found to be close to the ensemble momentum scattering time tp obtained from Hall measurements of electron mobility. The values of |W(kF)| give the Dresselhaus (BIA) coefficient of spin-orbit interaction as a function of electron confinement energy in the quantum show, qualitatively, the behaviour expected from k.p theory.

Fano effect and Kondo effect in quantum dots formed in strongly coupled quantum wells

We present lateral transport measurements on strongly, vertically coupled quantum dots formed in separate quantum wells in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Coulomb oscillations are observed forming a honeycomb lattice consistent with two strongly coupled dots. When the tunnel barriers in the upper well are reduced we observe the Fano effect due to the interfering paths through a resonant state in the lower well and a continuum state in the upper well. In both regimes an in plane magnetic field reduces the coupling between the wells when the magnetic length is comparable to the center to center separation of the wells. We also observe the Kondo effect which allows the spin states of the double dot system to be probed.

Magnetic-field-induced reduction of the exciton polarization splitting in InAs quantum dots

By the application of an in-plane magnetic field, we demonstrate control of the fine structure polarisation splitting of the exciton emission lines in individual InAs quantum dots. The selection of quantum dots with certain barrier composition and confinement energies is found to determine the magnetic field dependent increase or decrease of the separation of the bright exciton emission lines, and has enabled the splitting to be tuned to zero within the resolution of our experiments. Observed behaviour allows us to determine g-factors and exchange splittings for different types of dots.

Local transport in a disorder-stabilized correlated insulating phase

We report the experimental realization of a correlated insulating phase in 2D GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures at low electron densities in a limited window of background disorder. This has been achieved at mesoscopic length scales, where the insulating phase is characterized by a universal hopping transport mechanism. Transport in this regime is determined only by the average electron separation, independent of the topology of background disorder. We have discussed this observation in terms of a pinned electron solid ground state, stabilized by mutual interplay of disorder and Coulomb interaction.

Effects of Zeeman spin splitting on the modular symmetry in the quantum Hall effect

Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions in the integer quantum Hall effect are studied under the formation of paired Landau bands arising from Zeeman spin splitting. By investigating features of modular symmetry, we showed that modifications to the particle-hole transformation should be considered under the coupling between the paired Landau bands. Our study indicates that such a transformation should be modified either when the Zeeman gap is much smaller than the cyclotron gap, or when these two gaps are comparable.

Coulomb-Blockade directional coupler

A tunable directional coupler based on Coulomb Blockade effect is presented. Two electron waveguides are coupled by a quantum dot to an injector waveguide. Electron confinement is obtained by surface Schottky gates on single GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction. Magneto-electrical measurements down to 350 mK are presented and large transconductance oscillations are reported on both outputs up to 4.2 K. Experimental results are interpreted in terms of Coulomb Blockade effect and the relevance of the present design strategy for the implementation of an electronic multiplexer is underlined.

Imaging Fractal Conductance Fluctuations and Scarred Wave Functions in a Quantum Billiard

We present scanning-probe images and magnetic-field plots which reveal fractal conductance fluctuations in a quantum billiard. The quantum billiard is drawn and tuned using erasable electrostatic lithography, where the scanning probe draws patterns of surface charge in the same environment used for measurements. A periodicity in magnetic field, which is observed in both the images and plots, suggests the presence of classical orbits. Subsequent high-pass filtered high-resolution images resemble the predicted probability density of scarred wave functions, which describe the classical orbits.
