Thermal transport and low-temperature specific heat in 4Hb-TaS$_2$

We investigate the low-energy excitation spectrum of the van der Waals heterostructure superconductor 4Hb-TaS$_2$ using ultra-low-temperature specific-heat and thermal-conductivity measurements with magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic $c$ axis. The specific heat is broadly consistent with a nodeless superconducting gap, but retains a finite residual linear contribution, indicating a small residual low-energy density of states in the superconducting state. In addition, a pronounced upturn appears below approximately 0.3K. Its weak magnetic-field dependence, together with the absence of a corresponding feature in thermal transport, supports an interpretation in terms of localized degrees of freedom, most likely a nuclear Schottky contribution. In contrast to the finite residual thermodynamic density of states, the thermal conductivity extrapolates to a vanishing zero-field electronic linear term within experimental uncertainty for both field orientations. Thus, the residual low-energy states do not form a detectable itinerant heat-conduction channel. In finite magnetic field, the electronic heat transport grows rapidly. For out-of-plane fields, this response is broadly consistent with previous thermal-conductivity measurements and with the behavior commonly associated with multigap nodeless superconductivity. The even steeper increase observed for in-plane fields suggests that the field-induced quasiparticle response of 4Hb-TaS$_2$ is more complicated than the standard multigap picture alone.

Chiral to Nematic Crossover in the Superconducting State of 4Hb-TaS$_2$

Most superconductors have an isotropic, single component order parameter, and are well described by the BCS theory for superconductivity. Unconventional, multiple components superconductors are exceptionally rare and are much less understood. Here, we combine scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved macroscopic transport to study the candidate chiral superconductor, 4Hb-TaS$_2$. We reveal quasi-periodic one-dimensional modulations in the tunneling conductance accompanied by two-fold symmetric superconducting critical field. The strong modulation of the in-plane critical field, points to a nematic, unconventional order parameter. However, the imaged vortex core is nearly circular symmetric, suggesting an isotropic order parameter. We reconcile this apparent discrepancy by modeling a competition between a dominating chiral superconducting order parameter and a nematic one, the latter emerges close to the normal phase. Our results strongly support the existence of two-component superconductivity in 4Hb-TaS$_2$ and can provide useful insights to other systems with coexistent charge order and superconductivity.

Superconductivity and phonon self-energy effects in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$

We study Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ multi-band superconductor with $T_c=14$K by polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. Deep in the superconducting state, we detect pair-breaking excitation at 45cm$^{-1}$ ($2Δ=5.6$meV) in the $XY$($B_{2g}$) scattering geometry, consistent with twice of the superconducting gap energy (3 meV) revealed by ARPES on the hole-like Fermi pocket with $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ character. We analyze the superconductivity induced phonon self-energy effects for the $B_{1g}$(Fe) phonon and estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ^Γ\approx 0.026$, which is insufficient to explain superconductivity with $T_c=14$K.
