Searches for Baryon Number Violation in Neutrino Experiments: A White Paper

Baryon number conservation is not guaranteed by any fundamental symmetry within the Standard Model, and therefore has been a subject of experimental and theoretical scrutiny for decades. So far, no evidence for baryon number violation has been observed. Large underground detectors have long been used for both neutrino detection and searches for baryon number violating processes. The next generation of large neutrino detectors will seek to improve upon the limits set by past and current experiments and will cover a range of lifetimes predicted by several Grand Unified Theories. In this White Paper, we summarize theoretical motivations and experimental aspects of searches for baryon number violation in neutrino experiments.

Effects of Neutrino Inverse Seesaw Mechanism on the Sparticle Spectrum in CMSSM and NUHM2

We study the implications of the inverse seesaw mechanism (ISS) on the sparticle spectrum in the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) and Non-Universal Higgs Model (NUHM2). Employing the maximal value of the Dirac Yukawa coupling involving the up type Higgs doublet provides a 2-3 GeV enhancement of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass. This effect permits one to have lighter colored sparticles in the CMSSM and NUHM2 scenarios with LSP neutralino, which can be tested at LHC14. We present a variety of LHC testable benchmark points with the desired LSP neutralino dark matter relic abundance.

Higgs Working Group Report of the Snowmass 2013 Community Planning Study

This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Higgs Boson working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). We identify the key elements of a precision Higgs physics program and document the physics potential of future experimental facilities as elucidated during the Snowmass study. We study Higgs couplings to gauge boson and fermion pairs, double Higgs production for the Higgs self-coupling, its quantum numbers and $CP$-mixing in Higgs couplings, the Higgs mass and total width, and prospects for direct searches for additional Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model. Our report includes projections of measurement capabilities from detailed studies of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), a Gamma-Gamma Collider, the International Linear Collider (ILC), the Large Hadron Collider High-Luminosity Upgrade (HL-LHC), Very Large Hadron Colliders up to 100 TeV (VLHC), a Muon Collider, and a Triple-Large Electron Positron Collider (TLEP).

Observable n - anti-n Oscillations with New Physics at LHC

We explore extensions of the MSSM in which TeV scale vector-like multiplets can mediate observable n-anti-n oscillations, without causing conflict with the proton decay experiments, with a U(1) symmetry playing an important role. The colored vector-like particles, in particular, may be found at the LHC through some decay modes arising from their direct couplings to quarks.

Missing Partner Mechanism in SO(10) Grand Unification

We present a new possibility for achieving doublet-triplet splitting naturally in supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theories. It is based on a missing partner mechanism which is realized with the 126 + 126-bar Higgs superfields. These Higgs fields, which are also needed for generating Majorana right-handed neutrino masses, contain a pair of color triplets in excess of weak doublets. This feature enables us to remove the color triplets from the low energy spectrum without fine-tuning. We give all the needed ingredients for a successful implementation of the missing partner mechanism in SO(10) and present explicit models wherein the Higgs doublet mass is protected against possible non-renormalizable corrections to all orders. We also show how realistic fermion masses can be generated in this context.

SU(2) Family Symmetry and the Supersymmetric Spectrum

We present a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with a gauged SU(2) family symmetry for the leptons. It is shown that this family symmetry can be consistently broken at the TeV scale along with supersymmetry. If supersymmetry breaking is driven by anomaly mediation, this model can provide positive squared masses for the sleptons and thus cure the tachyon problem. We analyze the constraints and consequences of this scenario. A characteristic feature of this model is the non-degeneracy of the first two family sleptons. The model predicts large value of tan(beta) and observable τto e γand B to μ^+ μ^- decay rates.

Constraining Z' From Supersymmetry Breaking

We suggest and analyze a class of supersymmetric Z' models based on the gauge symmetry U(1)_x = x Y - (B-L), where Y is the Standard Model hypercharge. For 1 < x < 2, the U(1)_x D-term generates positive contributions to the slepton masses, which is shown to solve the tachyonic slepton problem of anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). The resulting models are very predictive, both in the SUSY breaking sector and in the Z' sector. We find M_Z' = (2-4) TeV and the Z-Z' mixing angle ξ= 0.001. Consistency with symmetry breaking and AMSB phenomenology renders the Z' "leptophobic", with Br(Z' -> e^+ e^-) = (1-1.6)% and Br(Z' -> q q-bar) = 44%. The lightest SUSY particle is either the neutral Wino or the sneutrino in these models.

TeV-Scale Horizontal Symmetry and the Slepton Mass Problem of Anomaly Mediation

We propose a new scenario for solving the tachyonic slepton mass problem of anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking models with a non-Abelian horizontal gauge symmetry broken at the TeV scale. A specific model based on SU(3)_{H} horizontal symmetry is presented wherein the sleptons receive positive mass-squared from the asymptotically free SU(3)_{H} gauge sector. Approximate global symmetries present in the model strongly suppress flavor changing processes induced by the horizontal vector gauge bosons. The model predicts m_{h} < 120 GeV for the lightest Higgs boson mass, tan{beta} nearly equal to 4, and M_V = 1-4 TeV for the SU(3)_{H} gauge boson masses. The lightest SUSY particle is found to be the neutral Wino, which is a candidate for cold dark matter.

Anomalous U(1) symmetry and lepton flavor violation

We show that in a large class of models based on anomalous U(1) symmetry which addresses the fermion mass hierarchy problem, leptonic flavor changing processes are induced that are in the experimentally interesting range. The flavor violation occurs through the renormalization group evolution of the soft SUSY breaking parameters between the string scale and the U(1)_A breaking scale. We derive general expressions for the evolution of these parameters in the presence of higher dimensional operators. Several sources for the flavor violation are identified: flavor-dependent contributions to the soft masses from the U(1)_A gaugino, scalar mass corrections proportional to the trace of U(1)_A charge, non-proportional A-terms from vertex corrections, and the U(1)_A D-term. Quantitative estimates for the decays μ-> e γand τ-> μγare presented in supergravity models which accommodate the relic abundance of neutralino dark matter.

Implications of a Massless Neutralino for Neutrino Physics

We consider the phenomenological implications of a soft SUSY breaking term BN at the TeV scale (here B is the U(1)_Y gaugino and N is the right-handed neutrino field). In models with a massless (or nearly massless) neutralino, such a term will give rise through the see-saw mechanism to new contributions to the mass matrix of the light neutrinos. We treat the massless neutralino as an (almost) sterile neutrino and find that its mass depends on the square of the soft SUSY breaking scale, with interesting consequences for neutrino physics. We also show that, although it requires fine-tuning, a massless neutralino in the MSSM or NMSSM is not experimentally excluded. The implications of this scenario for neutrino physics are discussed.

Finite Grand Unified Theories and the Quark Mixing Matrix

In N = 1 super Yang-Mills theories, under certain conditions satisfied by the spectrum and the Yukawa couplings, the beta functions will vanish to all orders in perturbation theory. We address the generation of realistic quark mixing angles and masses in such finite Grand Unified Theories. Working in the context of finite SUSY SU(5), we present several examples with realistic quark mixing matrices. Non-Abelian discrete symmetries are found to be important in satisfying the conditions for finiteness. Our realistic examples are based on permutation symmetries and the tetrahedral symmetry $A_4$. These examples enable us to address questions such as the decay rate of the proton in finite GUTs.

Natural suppression of d=5 operator induced proton decay in supersymmetric grand unified theories

The proton decay in supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), where the special mechanism provides the natural suppression of the dimension 5 ($d=5$) operators, was studied. Due to this mechanism, $d=5$ operator induced proton decay takes place only through the mixing of light generation fermions with those from third generation and crucially depends on the structure of fermion mass matrices. We show that in general proton decay is strongly suppressed relative to the standard SUSY GUT situation and for wide class of fermion mass matrices the SUSY parameter space practically has no restrictions.

Missing Doublet Multiplet as the Origin of the Doublet-Triplet Splitting in SUSY SU(6)

In a $SU(6)$ gauge theory we found the irreducible representation (175-plet) which does not contain the Higgs doublet. Using this representation we construct two SUSY $SU(6)$ models in which the doublet-triplet splitting occurs naturally, without fine tuning. The crucial role is played by the ``custodial" global $SU(2)_H$ in combination with discrete or continuous $R$ symmetries.
