DemoQuanDT: A Carrier-Grade QKD Network

Quantum Key Distribution Networks (QKDN) enable secure communication even in the age of powerful quantum computers. In the hands of a network operator, which can offer its service to many users, the economic viability of a QKDN increases significantly. The highly challenging operator-user relationship in a large-scale network setting demands additional requirements to ensure carrier-grade operation. Addressing this challenge, this work presents a carrier-grade QKDN architecture, which combines the functional QKDN architecture with the operational perspective of a network operator, ultimately enhancing the economic viability of QKDN. The focus is on the network and key management aspects of a QKDN while assuming state-of-the-art commercial QKD-Modules. The presented architecture was rolled out within an in-field demonstrator, connecting the cities of Berlin and Bonn over a link distance of 923 km across Germany. We could show, that the proposed network architecture is feasible, integrable, and scalable making it suitable for deployment in real-world networks. Overall, the presented carrier-grade QKDN architecture promises to serve as a blueprint for network operators providing QKD-based services to their customers.

A Survey of Home Energy Management Systems in Future Smart Grid Communications

In this paper we present a systematic review of various home energy management (HEM) schemes. Employment of home energy management programs will make the electricity consumption smarter and more efficient. Advantages of HEM include, increased savings for consumers as well as utilities, reduced peak to average ratio (PAR) and peak demand. Where there are numerous applications of smart grid technologies, home energy management is probably the most important one to be addressed. Utilities across the globe have taken various steps for efficient consumption of electricity. New pricing schemes like, Real Time Pricing (RTP), Time of Use (ToU), Inclining Block Rates (IBR), Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) etc, have been proposed for smart grid. Distributed Energy Resources (DER) (local generation) and/or home appliances coordination along with different tariff schemes lead towards efficient consumption of electricity. This work also discusses a HEM systems general architecture and various challenges in implementation of this architecture in smart grid.

A new approach to soft set through applications of cubic set

The notions of (internal, external) cubic soft sets, P-(R-)order,P-(R-)union, P-(R-)intersection and P-OR, R-OR, P-AND and R-AND are introduced, and related properties are investigated. We show that the P-union and the P-intersection of internal cubic soft sets are also internal cubic soft sets. We provide conditions for the P-union (resp. P-intersection) of two external cubic soft sets to be an internal cubic soft set. We give conditions for the P-union (resp. R-union and R-intersection) of two external cubic soft sets to be an external cubic soft set. We consider conditions for the R-intersection (resp.P-intersection) of two cubic sof sets to be both an external cubic soft set and an internal cubic soft set.

Bandgap engineering of Cd1-xSrxO

Structural, electronic and optical properties of Cd1-xSrxO (0 \leq x \leq 1) are calculated for the first time using density functional theory. Our results show that these properties are strongly dependent on x. The bond between Cd and O is partially covalent and the covalent nature of the bond decreases as the concentration of Sr increases from 0 to 100%. It is found that Cd1-xSrxO is an indirect bandgap compound for the entire range of x and the bandgap of the alloy increases from 0.85 to 6.00 eV with the increase in Sr concentration. Frequency dependent dielectric functions ε1(ω), ε2(ω), refractive index n(ω) and absorption coefficient α(ω) are also calculated and discussed in details. The peak value of refractive indices shifts to higher energy regions with the increase in Sr. The striking feature of these alloys is that Cd0.5Sr0.5O is an anisotropic material. The larger value of the extraordinary refractive index confirms that the material is positive birefringence crystal. The present comprehensive theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of the material predicts that it can be effectively used in optoelectronic applications in the wide range of spectrum; IR, visible and UV.

Investigation of structural and optoelectronic properties of BaThO3

Structural and optoelectronic properties of BaThO3 cubic perovskite are calculated using all electrons full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Wide and direct band gap, 5.7 eV, of the compound predicts that it can be effectively used in UV based optoelectronic devices. Different characteristic peaks in the wide UV range emerges mainly due to the transition of electrons between valance band state O-p and conduction band states Ba-d, Ba-f, Th-f and Th-d.

Coherent Aharonov Bohm oscillations in type-II (ZnMn)Te quantum dots

The magneto-photoluminescence of type-II (ZnMn)Te quantum dots is presented. As a result of the type-II band alignment Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the photoluminescence intensity are evident, confirming previous predictions for the suitability of this geometry to control the optical Aharonov-Bohm effect in semiconductor systems. Moreover, the system demonstrates an interesting interplay between the AB effect and the spin polarization in diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dots. The intensity of the AB oscillations increases with both magnetic field and the degree of optical polarization, indicating the suppression of spin fluctuations improves the coherence of the system.
