From frustration to glassiness via quantum fluctuations and random tiling with exotic entropy

When magnetic moments (spins) are regularly arranged in a geometry of a triangular motif, the spins may not satisfy simultaneously their interactions with their neighbors. This phenomenon, called frustration, leads to numerous energetically equivalent magnetic states (ground states), which results in exotic states such as spin liquid and spin ice. Here we report an alternative situation: a system that, classically, is to be a liquid in the clean limit freezes into a glassy state induced by quantum fluctuations. The case in point is a frustrated magnet in which spins are arranged in a triangular network of bi-pyramids. When taking into account quantum corrections, the classical degeneracy is broken into a set of local minima in a rugged energy landscape, which are separated by large energy barriers, over a finite number of degenerate, periodic, ground states. The appearance of large barriers is due to the absence of local zero-energy modes that are typical in spin-liquid candidate systems. We establish this by mapping the set of local energy minima states into a tiling with colored hexagonal tiles. We show that the system exhibits a large number of aperiodic tessellations. The configuration entropy of the local minima is extremely sensitive to boundary conditions, scaling with the boundary length rather than its volume. The low temperature thermodynamics is also discussed to compare it with other glassy materials.

Scaling of entanglement entropy and superselection rules

Particle number conservation in fermionic systems restricts the allowed local operations on bi-partite systems. We show how this restriction is related to measurement entropy of particle fluctuations and compute it for several regimes of practical relevance. The accessible entanglement entropy restricted by particle number conservation is equal, to leading order, to the full entanglement entropy. The correction is bounded by the log of the variance of particle number fluctuations. The results are applied to generic Fermi systems in dimension d>1 as well as to several critical systems in d=1.

Supercurrent survival under Rosen-Zener quench of hard core bosons

We study the survival of super-currents in a system of impenetrable bosons subject to a quantum quench from its critical superfluid phase to an insulating phase. We show that the evolution of the current when the quench follows a Rosen-Zener profile is exactly solvable. This allows us to analyze a quench of arbitrary rate, from a sudden destruction of the superfluid to a slow opening of a gap. The decay and oscillations of the current are analytically derived, and studied numerically along with the momentum distribution after the quench. In the case of small supercurrent boosts $ν$, we find that the current surviving at long times is proportional to $ν^3$.

Minimal excitation states of electrons in one-dimensional wires

A strategy is proposed to excite particles from a Fermi sea in a noise-free fashion by electromagnetic pulses with realistic parameters. We show that by using quantized pulses of simple form one can suppress the particle-hole pairs which are created by a generic excitation. The resulting many-body states are characterized by one or several particles excited above the Fermi surface accompanied by no disturbance below it. These excitations carry charge which is integer for noninteracting electron gas and fractional for Luttinger liquid. The operator algebra describing these excitations is derived, and a method of their detection which relies on noise measurement is proposed.

Full Counting Statistics: An elementary derivation of Levitov's formula

We present a novel derivation of the original Levitov formula, for the statistics of charge transported between electron reservoirs. This is done by proving a trace formula, which relates certain traces in Fock space to single particle determinants. Using the present approach we find in addition several generalizations, such as a corresponding formula for Bosons.

Repulsive Casimir forces

We discuss repulsive Casimir forces between dielectric materials with non trivial magnetic susceptibility. It is shown that considerations based on naive pair-wise summation of Van der Waals and Casimir Polder forces may not only give an incorrect estimate of the magnitude of the total Casimir force, but even the wrong sign of the force when materials with high dielectric and magnetic response are involved. Indeed repulsive Casimir forces may be found in a large range of parameters, and we suggest that the effect may be realized in known materials. The phenomenon of repulsive Casimir forces may be of importance both for experimental study and for nanomachinery applications.

A thick shell Casimir effect

We consider the Casimir energy of a thick dielectric-diamagnetic shell under a uniform velocity light condition, as a function of the radii and the permeabilities. We show that there is a range of parameters in which the stress on the outer shell is inward, and a range where the stress on the outer shell is outward. We examine the possibility of obtaining an energetically stable configuration of a thick shell made of a material with a fixed volume.

Casimir's energy of a conducting sphere and of a dilute dielectric ball

In this paper we sum over the spherical modes appearing in the expression for the Casimir energy of a conducting sphere and of a dielectric ball (assuming the same speed of light inside and outside), before doing the frequency integration. We derive closed integral expressions that allow the calculations to be done to all orders, without the use of regularization procedures. The technique of mode summation using a contour integral is critically examined.
