Delineating the magnetic field line escape pattern and stickiness in a poloidally diverted tokamak

We analyze a Hamiltonian model with five wire loops that delineates the magnetic surfaces of the tokamak ITER, including a similar safety factor profile and the X-point related to the presence of a poloidal divertor. Non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbations are added by external coils, similar to the correction coils installed at the tokamak DIII-D and those that will be installed at ITER. To show the influence of magnetic perturbations on the field line escape, we integrate numerically the field line differential equations and obtain the footprints and deposition patterns on the divertor plate. Moreover, we show that the homoclinic tangle describes the deposition patterns in the divertor plate, agreeing with results observed in sophisticated simulation codes. Additionally, we show that while chaotic lines escape to the divertor plates, some of them are trapped, for many toroidal turns, in complex structures around magnetic islands, embedded in the chaotic region, giving rise to the so called stickiness effect characteristic of chaotic Hamiltonian systems. Finally, we introduce a random collisional term to the field line mapping to investigate stickiness alterations due to particle collisions. Within this model, we conclude that, even reduced by collisions, stickiness still influences the field line transport.

Magnetic Field Line Stickiness in Tokamaks

We present simulated figures of the diverted magnetic field lines of the tokamak ITER, obtained by numerically integrating a Hamiltonian model with electrical currents in five wire loops and control coils. We show evidences of a sticky island embedded in the chaotic region near the divertor plates, which traps magnetic field lines for many toroidal turns increasing their connection lengths to these plates.

Torsion-Adding and Asymptotic Winding Number for Periodic Window Sequences

In parameter space of nonlinear dynamical systems, windows of periodic states are aligned following routes of period-adding configuring periodic window sequences. In state space of driven nonlinear oscillators, we determine the torsion associated with the periodic states and identify regions of uniform torsion in the window sequences. Moreover, we find that the measured of torsion differs by a constant between successive windows in periodic window sequences. We call this phenomenon as torsion-adding. Finally, combining the torsion and the period adding rules, we deduce a general rule to obtain the asymptotic winding number in the accumulation limit of such periodic window sequences.

Controlling chaos in wave-particle interactions

We analyze the behavior of a relativistic particle moving under the influence of a uniform magnetic field and a stationary electrostatic wave. We work with a set of pulsed waves that allows us to obtain an exact map for the system. We also use a method of control for near-integrable Hamiltonians that consists in the addition of a small and simple control term to the system. This control term creates invariant tori in phase space that prevent chaos from spreading to large regions and make the controlled dynamics more regular. We show numerically that the control term just slightly modifies the system but is able to drastically reduce chaos with a low additional cost of energy. Moreover, we discuss how the control of chaos and the consequent recovery of regular trajectories in phase space are useful to improve regular particle acceleration.

Effective transport barriers in nontwist systems

In fluids and plasmas with zonal flow reversed shear, a peculiar kind of transport barrier appears in the shearless region, one that is associated with a proper route of transition to chaos. Using a symplectic nontwist maps, which model such zonal flows, we investigate these barriers. In particular, the standard nontwist map, a paradigm of nontwist systems, is used to analyze the parameter dependence of the transport through a broken shearless barrier. Varying a proper control parameter, we identify the onset of structures with high stickiness that give rise to an effective barrier near the broken shearless curve. Several diagnostics are used: stickiness is measured by escape time and transmissivity plots, while barriers that separate different regions of stickiness are identified by employing two indicators in the phase space, the finite-time rotation number and the finite-time Lyapunov exponent.

Replicate Periodic Windows in the Parameter Space of Driven Oscillators

In the bi-dimensional parameter space of driven oscillators, shrimp-shaped periodic windows are immersed in chaotic regions. For two of these oscillators, namely, Duffing and Josephson junction, we show that a weak harmonic perturbation replicates these periodic windows giving rise to parameter regions correspondent to periodic orbits. The new windows are composed of parameters whose periodic orbits have periodicity and pattern similar to stable and unstable periodic orbits already existent for the unperturbed oscillator. These features indicate that the reported replicate periodic windows are associated with chaos control of the considered oscillators.

Finite-time rotation number: a fast indicator for chaotic dynamical structures

Lagrangian coherent structures are effective barriers, sticky regions, that separate phase space regions of different dynamical behavior. The usual way to detect such structures is via finite-time Lyapunov exponents. We show that similar results can be obtained for single-frequency systems from finite-time rotation numbers, which are much faster to compute. We illustrate our claim by considering examples of continuous and discrete-time dynamical systems of physical interest.

Experimental observation of a complex periodic window

The existence of a special periodic window in the two-dimensional parameter space of an experimental Chua's circuit is reported. One of the main reasons that makes such a window special is that the observation of one implies that other similar periodic windows must exist for other parameter values. However, such a window has never been experimentally observed, since its size in parameter space decreases exponentially with the period of the periodic attractor. This property imposes clear limitations for its experimental detection.

Non-transitive maps in phase synchronization

Concepts from the Ergodic Theory are used to describe the existence of non-transitive maps in attractors of phase synchronous chaotic systems. It is shown that for a class of phase-coherent systems, e.g. the sinusoidally forced Chua's circuit and two coupled R{ö}ssler oscillators, phase synchronization implies that such maps exist. These ideas are also extended to other coupled chaotic systems. In addition, a phase for a chaotic attractor is defined from the tangent vector of the flow. Finally, it is discussed how these maps can be used to real time detection of phase synchronization in experimental systems.

Global Bifurcation Destroying The Experimental Torus T2

We show experimentally the scenario of a two-frequency torus $T^2$ breakdown, in which a global bifurcation occurs due to the collision of a torus with an unstable periodic orbit, creating a heteroclinic saddle connection, followed by an intermittent behavior.

Phase Synchronization and invariant measures in sinusoidally perturbed chaotic systems

We show that, in periodically perturbed chaotic systems, Phase Synchronization appears, associated to a special type of stroboscopic map, in which not only averages quantities are equal to invariants of the perturbation, the angular frequency, but also it exists a very large number of non-transient transformations, possibly infinity. In cases where there is not phase synchronization there is either only transitive transformations on the attractor, or a finite number of non-transitive transformations. We base our statements in experimental and numerical results from the sinusoidally perturbed Chua's circuit.

Recurrence Time Statistics for Finite Size Intervals

We investigate the statistics of recurrences to finite size intervals for chaotic dynamical systems. We find that the typical distribution presents an exponential decay for almost all recurrence times except for a few short times affected by a kind of memory effect. We interpret this effect as being related to the unstable periodic orbits inside the interval. Although it is restricted to a few short times it changes the whole distribution of recurrences. We show that for systems with strong mixing properties the exponential decay converges to the Poissonian statistics when the width of the interval goes to zero. However, we alert that special attention to the size of the interval is required in order to guarantee that the short time memory effect is negligible when one is interested in numerically or experimentally calculated Poincar{é} recurrence time statistics.
