Critical mode and band-gap-controlled bipolar thermoelectric properties of SnSe

The reliable calculation of electronic structures and understanding of electrical properties depends on an accurate model of the crystal structure. Here, we have reinvestigated the crystal structure of the high-zT thermoelectric material tin selenide, SnSe, between 4 and 1000 K using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. Symmetry analysis reveals the presence of four active structural distortion modes, one of which is found to be active over a relatively wide range of more than +/-200 K around the symmetry-breaking Pnma-Cmcm transition at 800 K. Density functional theory calculations on the basis of the experimental structure parameters show that the unusual, step-like temperature dependencies of the electrical transport properties of SnSe are caused by the onset of intrinsic bipolar conductivity, amplified and shifted to lower temperatures by a rapid reduction of the band gap between 700 and 800 K. The calculated band gap is highly sensitive to small out-of-plane Sn displacements observed in the diffraction experiments. SnSe with a sufficiently controlled acceptor concentration is predicted to produce simultaneously a large positive and a large negative Seebeck effect along different crystal directions.

Atomic Ordering in Cubic Bismuth Telluride Alloy Phases at High Pressure

Pressure-induced transitions from ordered intermetallic phases to substitutional alloys to semi-ordered phases were studied in a series of bismuth tellurides. Using angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction, the compounds Bi4Te5, BiTe, and Bi2Te were observed to form alloys with the disordered body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure upon compression to above 14--19 GPa at room temperature. The BiTe and Bi2Te alloys and the previously discovered high-pressure alloys of Bi2Te3 and Bi4Te3 were all found to show atomic ordering after gentle annealing at very moderate temperatures of ~100°C. Upon annealing, BiTe transforms from the bcc to the B2 (CsCl) crystal structure type, and the other phases adopt semi-disordered variants thereof, featuring substitutional disorder on one of the two crystallographic sites. The transition pressures and atomic volumes of the alloy phases show systematic variations across the Bi_mTe_n series including the end members Bi and Te. First-principles calculations were performed to characterize the electronic structure and chemical bonding properties of B2-type BiTe and to identify the driving forces of the ordering transition. The calculated Fermi surface of B2-type BiTe has an intricate structure and is predicted to undergo three topological changes between 20 and 60 GPa.

The Structure of Eu-III

Previous x-ray diffraction studies have reported Eu to transform from the hcp structure to a new phase, Eu-III, at 18 GPa. Using x-ray powder diffraction we have determined that Eu remains hcp up to 33 GPa, and that the extra peaks that appear at 18 GPa are from an impurity phase with space group R-3c . Above 33 GPa the diffraction pattern becomes very much more complex, signalling a transition to a phase with a distorted hcp structure.

Plasmons in Sodium under Pressure: Increasing Departure from Nearly-Free-Electron Behavior

We have measured plasmon energies in Na under high pressure up to 43 GPa using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The momentum-resolved results show clear deviations, growing with increasing pressure, from the predictions for a nearly-free electron metal. Plasmon energy calculations based on first-principles electronic band structures and a quasi-classical plasmon model allow us to identify a pressure-induced increase in the electron-ion interaction and associated changes in the electronic band structure as the origin of these deviations, rather than effects of exchange and correlation. Additional IXS results obtained for K and Rb are addressed briefly.

Effect of pressure on the Raman modes of antimony

The effect of pressure on the zone-center optical phonon modes of antimony in the A7 structure has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The A_g and E_g frequencies exhibit a pronounced softening with increasing pressure, the effect being related to a gradual suppression of the Peierls-like distortion of the A7 phase relative to a cubic primitive lattice. Also, both Raman modes broaden significantly under pressure. Spectra taken at low temperature indicate that the broadening is at least partly caused by phonon-phonon interactions. We also report results of ab initio frozen-phonon calculations of the A_g and E_g mode frequencies. Presence of strong anharmonicity is clearly apparent in calculated total energy versus atom displacement relations. Pronounced nonlinearities in the force versus displacement relations are observed. Structural instabilities of the Sb-A7 phase are briefly addressed in the Appendix.

Effect of pressure on the polarized infrared optical response of quasi-one-dimensional LaTiO$_{3.41}$

The pressure-induced changes in the optical properties of the quasi-one-dimensional conductor LaTiO$_{3.41}$ were studied by polarization-dependent mid-infrared micro-spectroscopy at room temperature. For the polarization of the incident radiation parallel to the conducting direction, the optical conductivity spectrum shows a pronounced mid-infrared absorption band, exhibiting a shift to lower frequencies and an increase in oscillator strength with increasing pressure. On the basis of its pressure dependence, interpretations of the band in terms of electronic transitions and polaronic excitations are discussed. Discontinuous changes in the optical response near 15 GPa are in agreement with a recently reported pressure-induced structural phase transition and indicate the onset of a dimensional crossover in this highly anisotropic system.

Pressure-driven orbital reorientation and change in Mott-Hubbard gap in YTiO3

We investigate the crystal structure of YTiO3 at high pressures up to 30 GPa by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (T = 295 K). The variation of the Ti--O bond lengths with pressure evidences a distinct change in the distortion of the TiO_6 octahedra at around 10 GPa, indicating a pressure-driven spatial reorientation of the occupied Ti 3d(t_2g) orbitals. The pressure-induced reduction of the optical band gap of YTiO3 is determined quantitatively by mid-infrared synchrotron micro-spectroscopy and discussed in terms of bond length and orbital orientation changes.

Structural properties of the sesquicarbide superconductor La2C3 at high pressure

The effect of pressure on the structural properties of lanthanum sesquicarbide La2C3 (T_c = 13 K) has been investigated at room temperature by angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The compound remains in the cubic Pu2C3-type structure at pressures up to at least 30 GPa. The corresponding equation of state parameters are reported and discussed in terms of phase stability of La2C3. Pressure-volume data of the impurity phase LaC2 are reported also for pressures up to 13 GPa.

Raman scattering in osmium under pressure

The effect of pressure and temperature on the Raman-active phonon mode of osmium metal has been investigated for pressures up to 20 GPa and temperatures in the range 10--300 K. Under hydrostatic conditions (He pressure medium) the phonon frequency increases at a rate of 0.73(5) cm^{-1}/GPa (T = 300 K). A large temperature-induced and wavelength-dependent frequency shift of the phonon frequency is observed, of which only a small fraction can be associated with the thermal volume change. The main contribution to the temperature dependence of the phonon frequency is rather attributed to non-adiabatic effects in the electron-phonon interaction, which explains also the observation of an increasing phonon line width upon cooling. The phonon line width and the pressure-induced frequency shift were found to be unusually sensitive to shear stress.

Crystal structure of LaTiO_3.41 under pressure

The crystal structure of the layered, perovskite-related LaTiO_3.41 (La_5Ti_5O_{17+δ}) has been studied by synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction under hydrostatic pressure up to 27 GPa (T = 295 K). The ambient-pressure phase was found to remain stable up to 18 GPa. A sluggish, but reversible phase transition occurs in the range 18--24 GPa. The structural changes of the low-pressure phase are characterized by a pronounced anisotropy in the axis compressibilities, which are at a ratio of approximately 1:2:3 for the a, b, and c axes. Possible effects of pressure on the electronic properties of LaTiO_3.41 are discussed.

Raman spectroscopy on carbon nanotubes at high pressure

Raman spectroscopy has been the most extensively employed method to study carbon nanotubes at high pressures. This review covers reversible pressure-induced changes of the lattice dynamics and structure of single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes as well as irreversible transformations induced by high pressures. The interplay of covalent and van-der-Waals bonding in single-wall nanotube bundles and a structural distortion near 2 GPa are discussed in detail. Attempts of transforming carbon nanotubes into diamond and other "superhard" phases are reviewed critically.

Equation of state and phonon frequency calculations of diamond at high pressures

The pressure-volume relationship and the zone-center optical phonon frequency of cubic diamond at pressures up to 600 GPa have been calculated based on Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation and the Generalized Gradient Approximation. Three different approaches, viz. a pseudopotential method applied in the basis of plane waves, an all-electron method relying on Augmented Plane Waves plus Local Orbitals, and an intermediate approach implemented in the basis of Projector Augmented Waves have been used. All these methods and approximations yield consistent results for the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus and the volume dependence of the mode Grueneisen parameter of diamond. The results are at variance with recent precise measurements up to 140 GPa. Possible implications for the experimental pressure determination based on the ruby luminescence method are discussed.

Crystal structure and lattice dynamics of AlB2 under pressure and implications for MgB2

The effect of high pressures to 40 GPa on the crystal structure and lattice dynamics of AlB2 was studied by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. There are no indications for a pressure-induced structural phase transition. The Raman spectra of the metallic sample exhibit a well-defined peak near 980 cm^{-1} at 0 GPa which can be attributed to the Raman-active E_{2g} zone-center phonon. Al deficiency of ~11% in AlB2, as indicated by the x-ray data, changes qualitatively the electronic structure, and there are indications that it may have a sizable effect on the pressure dependence of the E_{2g} phonon frequency. Similar changes of the pressure dependence of phonon frequencies, caused by non-stoichiometry, are proposed as an explanation for the unusually large variation of the pressure dependence of T_c for different samples of MgB2.

MgB_2 under pressure: phonon calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and optical reflectance

The effect of pressure on optical phonon frequencies of MgB$_2$ has been calculated using the frozen-phonon approach based on a pseudopotential method. Grüneisen parameters of the harmonic mode frequencies are reported for the high-frequency zone-center $E_{2g}$ and $B_{1g}$ and the zone-boundary $E_{2u}$ and $B_{2u}$ modes at $A$. Anharmonic effects of phonon frequencies and the implications of the calculated phonon frequency shifts for the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature of MgB$_2$ are discussed. Also reported are Raman and optical reflectance spectra of MgB$_2$ measured at high pressures. The experimental observations in combination with calculated results indicate that broad spectral features we observed in the Raman spectra at frequencies between 500 and 900 cm$^{-1}$ cannot be attributed to first-order scattering by zone-center modes, but originate in part from a chemical species other than MgB$_2$ at the sample surface and in part from a maximum in the MgB$_2$ phonon density of states. Low-temperature Raman spectra taken at ambient pressure showed increased scattering intensity in the region below 300 cm$^{-1}$.

Calculated elastic and electronic properties of MgB$_2$ at high pressures

The effect of high pressure on structural and electronic properties of the novel superconductor \MB has been calculated using the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method. Despite the layered crystal structure of \MB nearly isotropic compression (bulk modulus $B_0=140.1(6)$ GPa) is found with only a 1.2% decrease of the $c/a$ ratio at 10 GPa. The effect of pressure on the critical temperature has been estimated on the basis of BCS theory and good agreement with experimental data is found. Our results suggest that it is a combination of increasing phonon frequency and decreasing electronic density of states at the Fermi level which leads to the observed decrease of the critical temperature under pressure.
